[LegacyUG] Paper sizes: Print Descendant Narrative successfully?

2006-10-25 Thread Robert Carneal
Hello everyone-

Has any successfully pick a non-Letter sized sheet for the printer, and
actually gotten a Descendant Narrative to print properly on this?

I have been trying, to no avail so far, to print on the same size sheet that
most computer manuals are printed on. Roughly seven inches wide and nine 1/4
inches top-to-bottom?

Rather than make one massive book for Christmas as I did last year, I
thought I would break it up into three books. Several people complained
about the weight of the books last year.

I tried saving to an RTF, and change the paper size in Word, but that
royally messes up names indexes, chapter headings, location index, etc.

Can anyone change the paper size successfully and print, keeping everything
straight automatically?

Thanks,

Robert

Actually all your DATA is in the fdb file. The others contain the
clipboards, focus groups etc you've set up. ie Useful but not vital.

[LegacyUG] Research Logs & the To Do List

you can use the To Do List as a research log? Do any of you do that

Re: [LegacyUG] Strange Happenings

2006-10-25 Thread Cathy

Hi Jan,

The "Mrs" must be in the file as either the Title Prefix OR in the Alt Name.
Have you checked the data for those particular women?

When you find where the "Mrs" is, you might check
your original file to see whether it is also there.

Another way of checking is to run the same report
from your original Family File and see whether it is there for these women.

The only way I could see it appearing is if in
the original file you have "Mrs" for these women
in either the Title Prefix for the main name or
for an Alt name. If it's being swapped from the
Alt Name to the Main Name, then there is a bug.

Cheers,
Cathy

RE: [LegacyUG] Re: Update wont install

2006-10-25 Thread Sherry/Support
Margaret,

A few users, especially those with slower connections, are reporting
problems downloading the latest build. The update this time is really huge
and with patience, it would continue installing.

Go to our website at http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/DownloadUpdate.asp and
in Step 3, select "Download Full Setup". After you've downloaded the file
to your hard drive, run the setup file, which will install over the existing
Legacy folder.

Thanks for using Legacy.

I am using Legacy 6.0.0.82 Build date 10th February 2006.

I have been busy this year with a project that is near complete, and so this
morning thought I would bring my Legacy to date again.
Went to - Legacy Home, clicked "Updates" it seems to have proceeded okay as
the next menu comes up with the "Legacy 6.0 Update" menu and option of
"Next". However when this is activated the little menu that then comes up
with the heading "Installing" and the bar to show how much percentage has
installed, it all just sits there at that stage and shows 0%. and is sitting
on "Legacy\RG.Dat"
I left it for a while thinking that it would soon get it's act together and
move along at its own rate, and so I went on to a few other things, but
after nearly an hour later it was still sitting at the same spot so I
cancelled, and started again.
I have now exercised this several times incase I might get lucky, but to no
avail.
What could be stopping the update installing normally?
I have not had this drama before, and everything on the computer is still
the same as previous downloads.
It is getting very exasperating and time wasting, and seriously thinking of
just leaving it on the version it is on and forgetting updates.
Has anyone else had this drama, and if so how to get round it please.
Thankyou
Margaret Bauer

RE: [LegacyUG] Questions on Installation and Copying Files

2006-10-25 Thread Jack Earnshaw
It sounds as if you just copied the Legacy program files, rather than
installing the software again - that will never work and probably accounts
for the error you got. By not installing the software, then Windows doesn't
know the program exists and so doesn't have all the hooks in place to run
it.

If you install from the CD and then go to update the software from the web,
you are effectively downloading a full copy of 6.0.0.110. So you might just
as well download it from the web in the first place. The result will be the
same and the time will be about the same as well.

You do need all of the extra files (CB, TC etc). I can't remember in detail
what they all are but they are part of your data. If you have Legacy backups
(the zip files), MOST will all be on there and so you could just restore
from the backup and everything will be ready for you. Some files (.his, .igi
etc aren't put onto the backups, but they aren't critical).

The other files you MAY want to copy over from the old machine are the
"setup" files i.e. your customization of the system, reports etc - they are
in the Legacy folder and have the extension ".usr" . If you don't copy them
then you will need to use the Options/Customise pages to get everything as
you want it, as well as set up how you had the reports. (probably best to
rename the usr files after the installation, before you copy yours over, so
you can always go back to them)

If you've "saved" things like searches, report setups so you can load them,
then these are all in your legacy data folder (with extensions like .rf0,
.rs5, .wf0) and you might want to bring those over as well.

But all these "extra" files are really just to avoid having to set
everything up again.

Jack

Using Legacy 6.0.0.79 (20 January 2006) - Updating this week

Background

1. Hard drive wouldn't boot - had corrupt file which could not be repaired.
2. Installed new hard drive and reinstalled Windows XP.
3. Made new hard drive Master and old drive Slave.
4. Copied files from old hard drive to new drive in folder called "Old C
Drive" (including Legacy). Will integrate necessary stuff later.
5. Attempted to start Legacy but get Runtime Error 339 (DLL or OCX file
changed, missing, etc.). Obviously a shared file is now missing.
6. Legacy web page instructions are to first uninstall Legacy and then
reinstall.

Questions

1. Believe I will not bother with the program existing in the old C drive
folder. Would like to do a new install on my new C drive. I have the
Legacy 6.0 CD. Should I install from it and then download updates from the
website? OR should I download the whole program from the website?

2. I need to copy my data files over to the new drive as well. There are
many files in this folder other than my family databases; i.e, with
extensions of CB, FG, TC and so on. What are these and can I just leave them
behind? What besides the family files do I need to relocate?

3. Anything else I need to be mindful of? I do have backups on my hard
drive and on CD.

Thanks -
Kay Fordham

RE: [LegacyUG] Questions on Installation and Copying Files

2006-10-25 Thread ronald ferguson

Kay,

Following a reinstallation of Windows onto a new drive you will find that
none of your programs work as they are no longer in the registry and all
will need to be reinstalled, not just Legacy, and not just the updates.
Presumably you have already given you old drive (now the slave) a new Drive
Letter (eg "E" ). You haven't mentioned which file was corrupt so make sure
that it is not going to cause problems again. It is not possible just to
copy files across into a new folder on a new drive and get them to work.

1. If you don't have broadband then I would install from the CD and update
(probably faster anyhow) onto your new C Drive.

2. When you have reinstalled you can then copy/drag your existing folders
containing your settings and data across to the new default folders which
Legacy has created and so overwrite them with your data. These include the
files which you mention. Or you can simply (?) restore your backup family
file and then redo your settings. Depending on how many you have changed
this may (or may not) be easier. It's certainly safer.

3. When you have reinstalled all the programs and data from your old drive
onto the new C Drive then reformat your old one to completely clean it out

Hi Pat, Welcome. Sorry but the answer is no because the servers won't allow
it. You can minimise the effect, of course, setting your email program to
put LUG messages in their own folder and by setting the sort to be by
