[LegacyUG] Linda Altman's census templates

2007-07-30 Thread Janis Gilmore
I have set up census templates, as Linda suggested, and I like the way it is
working for me.

Linda, I think you are the one who offered to share your census source
templates? Would you mind sending me a copy?

Thanks,

Janis Gilmore

[LegacyUG] Attached Files

2007-07-30 Thread Don Brown
What is going on with the Group.

I have always thought that sending attachments was a huge no-no for the
group but lately there seems to be a rash of attachments appearing. I was
under the impression that people that failed to adhere to the guidelines of
etiquette were going to be unsubscribed without notice. Perhaps the people
at Legacy can clear this point up for me so I can decide whether continue
without attachments or unsubscribe if attachments are being allowed.

My apologies to Don and the rest of the group. That was not an
attachment that was included with my message but an INCORPORATED
picture of the EVENT screen; incorpirated within the message to
help people understand better what I was trying to describe. I
had no idea that it would come across as an attachment or I would
not have sent it. And yes, I had my email set as "plain text".
Mea culpa.

I was not referring to you alone as last week there were two other postings
with attachments.
Any time you attach anything, picture, text file, html file or anything, it
arrives at everyone's mail box as an attachment.
You could put it on a web page and then include the web address in the
email.

RE: [LegacyUG] Attached Files

2007-07-30 Thread Sherry/Support
Don,

Attachments are not allowed, but unfortunately when we switched servers, we
weren't given the option to remove attachments nor can we convert HTML to
plain text (we ask that users not send message in HTML either). We just
have to trust that the listers will follow the LUG guidelines.

It would be helpful if every new subscriber - heck even the old ones - would
go to our LUG Etiquette Guidelines and review them. There's a link at the
bottom of every email.

Thanks for using Legacy.

Don, and any other interested parties,

Not to be hard-nosed, but there is a difference between "included
within" a message and an "attachment" to a message. I was able
to cut and paste a picture of the EVENTS screen INSIDE the
message (not as an attachment to). In fact, if you take a good
hard look at my message, you can see the gap where the picture
was. There was NO attachment. Somehow, the software on the LUG
interpreted the inserted picture as an attachment. I'll let you
computer geniuses figure that one out. So Sherry, we might need

And as I said before, yes, I did make certain I was using Plain

RE: [LegacyUG] Attached Files

2007-07-30 Thread Rodney Hall
Hello Pat,

I can understand you thought were posting in text, but if you include an
image, you are *not* posting in text, but in html. Plain text means just
that - text - and nothing else. Many email clients will add images as an
attachment. It's just a shame that the new Legacy host does not allow the
requisite filtering.

RE: [LegacyUG] Attached Files

2007-07-30 Thread Sherry/Support
Pat,

Graphics cannot be included in plain text messages - it just won't happen.
You can include them in HTML messages, however we do not want users to use
HTML either because the size of an HTML message can be considerably larger
than the same message in plain text, depending on the inclusion of pictures,
backgrounds, animations, etc.

If you copied and pasted into the message, then it problem "jumped out" when
you saved it and attached itself I don't know which email program you're
using and how it works, but I know when I try to paste a graphic in a plain
text message, it just won't happen!

Please remember that we have users who are still on dial-up, have limited
storage space for email or even pay by the minute for downloading their
email. Let's all be considerate and DO NOT use HTML or RTF email with
graphics included of any kind and DO NOT attach anything to your emails.

Also, turn off return receipt request and the .vcf option.

Thanks for using Legacy.

This IMHO is a big weakness in legacy. You can not change from one
window dialog to another. You have to close them. Thus you have to go
through this additional step of the copy paste/copy paste.

No there is not a difference. An image is interpretted as an
attachment in plain text mail. This is the way the e-mail standard
works. You attached a jpg. You can not include images in plain text
mail. ASCII won't support it.

RE: [LegacyUG] getting icons to appear

2007-07-30 Thread Sherry/Support
Barb,

You'll probably see more icons if you enlarge Legacy to full screen.

To remove any icon, make sure you drag it to the background of the customize
window - behind the section where you see the available icons, not the same
part of the window where the icons are.

Thanks for using Legacy.

[LegacyUG] Advice on entering source information

2007-07-30 Thread Christine
Hi all. I’m new to Legacy and am having some trouble entering my source
information, despite looking at examples I’ve found on the internet.

For example, I found cemetery records on the Waupaca county, Wisconsin
GenWeb site (http://www.rootsweb.com/~wiwaupac/). It is part of the
WIGenWeb, which in turn is part of the USGenWeb project. The Waupaca site is
maintained by Paula Vaughan.

On the Cemeteries page it says, “The Waupaca County cemeteries were read by
Wayne and Alta Guyant in the 1970's. The Guyant Collection includes a
general index which also includes veteran and maiden names with each
cemetery of Portage, Waupaca and Waushara Counties and have been
mircofilmed. You may be able to obtain the microfilm through your local
library and the interlibrary loan system OR your local Family History
Library. The information following each cemetery under the heading of
Microfilm Information gives you the Family History Library number of the
film on which the said cemetery is listed.”

If I then go to my cemetery of interest, Lakeside Memorial Park, it states,
“Thank you to the City of Waupaca for permitting the Lakeside Memorial Park
sexton records to be posted. This listing is complete through 2005.”

The information for the people I’m researching is all there, which I do
understand will go into the Detail section of the source citation – however,
that’s getting ahead of myself!

When I create a new Master Source in Legacy, what information goes where?

For example:

Source List Name Wisconsin, Waupaca County GenWeb

Type Internet

AuthorPaula Vaughan

Title Waupaca County, Wisconsin History and
Genealogical Website (italicise)

Publication facts http://www.rootsweb.com/~wiwaupac/

OR…is the transcription from the cemetery the focus of the source, and the
repository is the Waupca GenWeb?

Next, I’m a wee bit confused about citing information I find at
Ancestry.com. For example, I found a record and the scanned image for a WWI
draft registration card. Under the details for the individual it says:

Source Citation: Registration Location: Lake County, Illinois; Roll:
1614032; Draft Board: 2.

It then says:

Source Information:

Ancestry.com. World War I Draft Registration Cards, 1917-1918 [database
on-line]. Provo, UT, USA: The Generations Network, Inc., 2005. Original
data: United States, Selective Service System. World War I Selective Service
System Draft Registration Cards, 1917-1918. Washington, D.C.: National
Archives and Records Administration. M1509, 4,582 rolls.

Again, in Legacy, what is the focus of the source and where does all this
information go?

Any specific examples would be greatly appreciated!!

Cheers,

Christine

It always fascinates me that someone makes a mistake and people on the list
complain so much that there is far more time and bandwidth wasted chastising
them than the original message took up. Why can't folks just let Sherry

Re: [LegacyUG] Using EVENTS for census info WAS Linda Altman's census templates ;

2007-07-30 Thread Pat Jones
I think there would be too much information and it would either overflow the
little box/area used for description when printing a FAMILY Group Record or it
might force the little box so far that it would corrupt the date field. I have
had problems (see archives) with the date field when trying to print out the
Family Group Report. Everything looks good on the computer screen but doesn't
always dprint out that way. The problem involve trying to use a date like
"from 1884-Jan 1886" or "between 1884-Jan 1886". The Report would print out
okay if I changed it to read 1884-1886 but then to compensate for the now
missing information I had to find another place to add the reason for the Jan
1886 date. Not a great problem. It appears that the boxes under the Family
Group Report have a "normal" for the program setting and all BUT the Date
column will expand to some degree if the information contained is longer than
what the program is designed for. Hope you follow this, I can't find a better
way to explain it.

She added the full information for all parties shown in the
census for the "Head of Household", continuing that way for each
census year the main party was found (in the case above, Robert
Marshall). As the children broke off and were found elsewhere,
they then became the head of their own household (even if single)
and had the full information listed under their name.

If you could look at my database, you would see that after I have
entered all this information under the "Head of Household", under
the EVENTS notes for each individual in the census information
(in this case, Mary and all the children), I have listed ONLY the
information found for that individual.

PROs to this method: I have the full information at my
fingertips when I do research and don't have to look under the
scattered SOURCES. My database if designed for my optimal
research capabilities, NOT for conciseness. It also enables
anyone looking at my database to see the information at a glance.
This method had enabled me to find several pieces of information
that I was missing and couldn't find until I set the database up
this way. The census information prints out in chronological
order immediately below the name and general information for the
individual in the Family Group Record which I use most often.

CONs you have a lot of sources, which I don't mind at all; I use
the "ibid" feature to cut down on some of them. Not all Legacy
reports will set up this way; I wish I could get the Descendant
Report to set up like the Family Group Report, for instance. It
doesn't even allow Sources unfortunately - bad mistake in MHO.

Re: [LegacyUG] Advice on entering source information

2007-07-30 Thread Joe
You will need both pieces of information if you were to actually find the
record in the National Archives which is the primary source. I list
Ancestry.com as the repository. Ancestry likes to muddy the waters by adding
their name to everything when all they are is a repsitory and not the primary
source.

Some may not consider this proper, but since Ancestry is a for profit
sourceI find it better to list the original source if future generations
need to find it. Ancestry may go out of business someday the National Archives
shouldn't :).

Your primary source would be:

World War I Selective Service System Draft Registration Cards, 1917-1918.
Washington, D.C.: National Archives and Records Administration. M1509, 4,582
rolls.

The detail of the source would be:

Registration Location: Lake County, Illinois; Roll: 1614032; Draft Board: 2

When it prints out you will get something like:

World War I Selective Service System Draft Registration Cards, 1917-1918.
Washington, D.C.: National Archives and Records Administration. M1509, 4,582
rolls. Registration Location: Lake County, Illinois; Roll: 1614032; Draft
Board: 2.

Have you tried using Legacy in split screen view? Just click on View and
select Split Screen View from the pull-down menu. Don't open a family file
in the new window; but instead select Research Guidance in first screen. You
can then use the second screen to get to other people in the family file.

This IMHO is a big weakness in legacy. You can not change from one
window dialog to another. You have to close them. Thus you have to go
through this additional step of the copy paste/copy paste.

I am not sure what version of MailEnable the listserv uses but it
clearly shows how to set up a filter for attachments on the mailenable
knowledgebase. The same should be able to be done for html.

[LegacyUG] Documentation personal family records

2007-07-30 Thread Helen Barton
Hi,
I'm brand new at this. I would like to find out if any one knows how to
properly document those important scraps of paper from family genealogies
that aren't e-mails or letters and are just as important to keep and
document. I've checked Elizabeth Shown Mills book "Evidence" with no
success. In many cases I suspect, and don't always know, who has written
down the family genealogical information. Usually there is no date or
signed name. Any suggestions for me? Thanks for your help.

This works especially nice when running 2 monitors on your computer
as Legacy's window can be stretched across both monitors - so family
file on one and Research Guidance on the other.

I strongly recommend having 2 monitors for genealogy work -- Legacy
on one monitor and Internet or other source data (CDs etc.) on the
other. Most modern graphic cards will run 2 monitors. If your
existing one doesn't then a replacement graphic card doesn't cost
much these days. Second-hand CRT monitors are mostly free for the
taking as so many people are upgrading to LCD ones.

Cheers, -- Dave N.

I have notes I found in a book that belonged to my great grandmother. Here
is how I sourced it:

Title: Notes - handwritten
Comments: Found in a book that belonged to Ollie BEAN WISECARVER, yellowed
paper, showing death dates of her father's siblings and his parents and her
father. These are not in any order that I can determine. Copied onto this
same paper is an autobiography written by Garrett Bean. Presumably, these
pages were written by Ollie or her mother, but I have no way of knowing for
sure.

I have created a Master Source called "Family Records and Research
Material" because I have lots of "scraps of paper" such as sections of
the family tree drawn up by members of the family recording their
immediate relatives, lists of birthdays etc and an Uncle of mine did a
lot of research before he died and I have some of his material and
notes. On the Comments tab I have written an explanation of what sort
of material I have and how I acquired it.

In Source Details I identify which particular "scrap of paper" is the
source for that record - something like "Auntie Fanny's Tree" or
"Grandmother Soley tree" or "Auntie Lilah's birthday list.". I can add
specific details to the Comments tab for the Source Details if
necessary.

2007-07-30 Thread Pat H

Jim,

I spoke too fast -- the computer went clunk, clunk, because there were
minimized notes on my screen. When I closed those I had no trouble
maneuvering around.

Thanks a million!

Pat,

I have no trouble using Research Guidance in split screen mode. I can
navigate to people, access them from the Name List, edit them, etc. If your
pc is going "clunk, clunk" when you try these things you might not have
enough RAM.

Well, I hadn't tried it, but I have now. When I got the Split Screen, I had

the same family on both screens. So in the left-hand screen I selected
Research Guidance and did a bit of searching and found a list of children.
In the right-hand screen I attempted to bring up the oldest child but when I

double-clicked on the name, the computer just went, "clunk, clunk." I
couldn't even edit info on the main couple. What am I doing wrong?

Have you tried using Legacy in split screen view? Just click on View and
select Split Screen View from the pull-down menu. Don't open a family file
in the new window; but instead select Research Guidance in first screen. You
can then use the second screen to get to other people in the family file.

This IMHO is a big weakness in legacy. You can not change from one
window dialog to another. You have to close them. Thus you have to go
through this additional step of the copy paste/copy paste.

RE: [LegacyUG] Using EVENTS for census info WAS Linda Altman's census templates ;

2007-07-30 Thread joe Martin
Randolph, I just tried to duplicate Pat's method of using event entry for
census,. The notes box accepted a huge input and did not overflow, and is
all included on the family group sheet, (30 Full Lines ) and all of it was
printed. The Spouse, however was pushed to the next page, but I have never
seen enough data on a census form to exceed more than a few lines.

I like Pat's usage of the Event Notes for census data.

I would still like to see Linda Altman's Census Templates

I think there would be too much information and it would either overflow the
little box/area used for description when printing a FAMILY Group Record or
it might force the little box so far that it would corrupt the date field.
I have had problems (see archives) with the date field when trying to print
out the Family Group Report. Everything looks good on the computer screen
but doesn't always dprint out that way. The problem involve trying to use a
date like "from 1884-Jan 1886" or "between 1884-Jan 1886". The Report would
print out okay if I changed it to read 1884-1886 but then to compensate for
the now missing information I had to find another place to add the reason
for the Jan 1886 date. Not a great problem. It appears that the boxes
under the Family Group Report have a "normal" for the program setting and
all BUT the Date column will expand to some degree if the information
contained is longer than what the program is designed for. Hope you follow
this, I can't find a better way to explain it.

This method had enabled me to find several pieces of information
that I was missing and couldn't find until I set the database up

order immediately below the name and general information for the
individual in the Family Group Record which I use most often.

CONs you have a lot of sources, which I don't mind at all; I use
the "ibid" feature to cut down on some of them. Not all Legacy
reports will set up this way; I wish I could get the Descendant

But as soon as you open a secondary window in either view you can't
open a window in the other view. For example open an Individuals
Information and you can go to the other view and do anything. So you
still end up having to close the secondary window or if you go another
layer down two windows. I would like split screen to operate as two
independent instances.

RE: [LegacyUG] Linda Altman's census templates

2007-07-30 Thread Linda Altman
Hey All;

I am on vacation this week. However, for all of you who want to see my
census templates, I will upload them to this list when I return to
civilization on Monday, Aug. 6.

In the meantime, this is what I do in a nutshell:

1) Under view, Master source, I create a template for every US census
year. The title is Template, YEAR US census, CENSUS SCHEDULE (ie population,
manufacturing, slave, veterans, etc.)

2) I skip down to the last box on the page - publication information)
and enter in the state, county, city, ED, page, street name, dwelling #,
family #, line #'s, taken from website name, date downloaded, images and
database online, copyright info, original data and images compiled from US
National Archives microfilm publication number ##. Make sure the in
parenthesis box is unchecked.

3) Hit save. Close the details box, I do not use source details.

4) When I have a census to source I cite master source Template,
YEAR...

5) I make the changes to the template as follows: the title changes to
Ancestors Household, 1234 US Census, Population Schedule.

6) The publication information comes from the census, replace generic
with specifics.

7) Click on the Source Text tab and enter in all of the census
information for the family, (ie, Line 1, John Q Ancestors, Head of
household, white, male, age 32 etc.)

8) click save as new source. Now the source should appears as John Q
Ancestors Household 1234 US census, population schedule. When you need to
source the entire household of John Q Ancestors, just enter in the census
event, and cite the source. You do not need to change anything.

This saves a lot of time and it prints out neatly on the reports. If you
want all of the data to print the first time on reports, check the print on
reports box in the source text filed. If you just want the short version on
your reports, uncheck the box.

I'll have all of the census templates - population schedules only, formatted
for sourcing via Ancestry or other online service, posted by Monday the 6th.
They will be in a text email. After that if anyone needs templates for FHL
or NARA microfilms, needs very detailed directions for population schedules,
or for other census schedules I will provide them for a small fee.

Fine! So long as they are prepared to pay me for the excess crap that I
have to download. My ISP charges me by the Mb. A jpg can easily occupy

RE: [LegacyUG] Research guidance & Legacy entries

2007-07-30 Thread C.G. Ouimet

Jim Liddil ...

One Open dialog per open application is not an application (Legacy) issue,
it's an operating system issue.

Try opening more than one dialog in Word or Excel ...

Allowing multiple instances of a single application raises complicated
issues. Particularly when all instances are working with the same data file.
Which one rules?

But as soon as you open a secondary window in either view you can't open a
window in the other view. For example open an Individuals Information and
you can go to the other view and do anything. So you still end up having to
close the secondary window or if you go another layer down two windows. I
would like split screen to operate as two independent instances.

RE: [LegacyUG] Documentation personal family records

2007-07-30 Thread ronald ferguson

Helen,

You have already received some good advice but I would also advise that you
treat such information with care. It is secondary information and one never
knows whether there are some skeletons which have been covered up and,
indeed, it's accuracy. Names used may be those a person was known by rather
than the actual names for example.

Where ever possible it is best to use it as research material and verify the
data from other sources. Having said that, I wish my family had left more
information :-)

Hi,
I'm brand new at this.

There is no need for attachments on Yahoo Groups as there is a facility for
files to be placed on the groups' sites.

If someone has to pay for the time online or the amount of data downloaded,
then limit the size of emails you can download. Some of the software
clients have that capability. Then you won't have to get so upset when a
newbie or even a "not so newbie" accidentally forgets. Take actions into
your own hands for a change.

Fine! So long as they are prepared to pay me for the excess crap that I
have to download. My ISP charges me by the Mb. A jpg can easily occupy
400Kb. One of those and a clown who doesn't trim properly and that's

Re: [LegacyUG] Research guidance & Legacy entries

2007-07-30 Thread Jim Liddil
Well I can do this in Oracle. :-) Why can't I open Master Sources and
also A single persons info file? I agree there can be issues but the
lack of the list view make it difficult to edit consistently. I think
it is a hassle to have to open the db in Access to get this list view
to check things. Genopro is an example of what Legacy should
implement. Genopro has other issues for sure, though.

Re: [LegacyUG] Pictures

2007-07-30 Thread Cathy
I've had good OCR results both with OCR programs that come with my
scanner and the Document Imager that comes with Microsoft Office.
The Microsoft Office one can convert to text from TIFF images. Not
sure about other image types so you may need to convert to TIFF first.

As you can see - neither bought as separate OCR program.

If you aren't getting good results you are either scanning an unusual
font or not using high enough dpi when scanning.

I save the scanned documents as images. I have yet to see an OCR
program that is both affordable and works. For most - it takes so
long to correct what the program thinks it saw - incorrectly - you
could have typed the entire thing in by hand. And the image can be
enlarged to make it readable for older relatives (or me).

Leo,

The only way to do this is to run the image through an OCR (Optical
Character Recognition) program
to convert the image to a text (ASCII) file. Two that I use are
Cuneiform and ABBY Fine Reader.

You can Google OCR for more.

RE: [LegacyUG] Linda Altman's census templates

2007-07-30 Thread Sherry/Support
Linda,

Attachments are *not* allowed on the list. PLEASE do not send attachments
to this list. If you have a website, you may place your files on the
website and then send a link to that site on the list, but NO ATTACHMENTS,
***Please

We have a lot of users who are on dial-up, have a limited number of
downloads or limited amount of time on the internet and sending attachments
is not fair to those people.

Anyone interested in Linda's templates should contact her directly!

Thanks for using Legacy.

As far as I know attachments aren't allowed in Yahoo groups either - a
matter of computer 'security".
My thought would be if someone wanted an attachment sent to them - then it
should be sent to their "actual" e-mail address instead of through the legacy
group

If you ever want to know what program someone is using, simply look at the
full header. The x-mailer will state the program. Pat is using Microsoft
Outlook Express 6.00.2900.3138.

could avoid all this hassle with HTML or plain text...

[LegacyUG] Milton Grove Cemetery

2007-07-30 Thread GeoSci
This topic was covered some time ago. But a friend I went to high school
with (at my request) sent the following. If anyone needs to follow up
beyond this - let me know- OFF LIST.
Keith
--
She said:

In reply to your question, most of my relatives are buried in that cemetery.
It is small and wouldn't take more than a few hours to explore. There are
some very old graves there - if I remember correctly some date to the 18th
century and are Moravian, therefore the markers are flat. As a child, I was
told that a Moravian church stood on that site. Those graves are on the top
of the hill on the right hand side as you face the cemetery from Milton
Grove Road. My Uncle Bill used to keep the records and was the person we
contacted to purchase a plot when our daughter died. He is no longer alive.
Stanley Moyer was another person who supposedly had a wealth of knowledge
about the cemetery, but he too is gone. I think I may know of another older
person who would have a good general knowledge of the place. He is on the
committee. My cousin Ronnie is also on the committee and I told him once
that I was interested in serving on the committee. He seemed excited to hear
that but I never heard more, so I'll have to follow up on that.
Bottom line - I can't answer your question right now, but I will work on it
(maybe when things settle down here just a little bit) and I will get back
to you.

RE: [LegacyUG] Correctly entering adopted children - and then some

2007-07-30 Thread cabyers
Hi David,

Welcome to the 21st century. Humans are more diverse and complex creatures
than we could comprehend or understand. In the past we had binary brains,
and as we mature as a species our understanding becomes more multifaceted
and hopefully tolerant of diversity which is part of evolution of all living
things.

It will be interesting to see how future genealogists deal with the full
range of gender as they confront it?

I cannot tell you what to do . . . but I have a nephew that was
married (now divorced), had 2 sons. Then had a sex change operation
and official name change. Now he-she is planning to marry a man that
has biological children. I'm dreading adding this second marriage to
my family tree!! Even his-her photos in Legacy's Picture Gallery
make it look like I've made some stupid errors!:-))
