It doesn't sound as if the relationship will print in reports in Legacy 7. I really miss that feature from Reunion/Generations. I suppose I'll have to wait until Legacy 8, 9, 10 or 11 for that one. But I'm still happy with all the great features that Legacy has and believe it's the best genealogy program around. Ruth A. [LegacyUG] children through IVF
Hi LUGers, I would like your advise on handling the following situation: A cousin in our family has a civil union with another woman. Our cousin gave birth last year through IVF. This year, her partner also gave birth though IVF (with the same donor). Currently, I have both ladies in a 'marriage', which means that one of them is noted as a man. (obviously incorrect). I have changed the caption to read partner instead of husband/wife, but the sex cannot be changed (or at least I can't). The first baby has our cousin for a mother, and status 'adopted by' the other lady. The second baby is the other way round. The Family group record shows the second lady as a 'father'. I am not sure if I should introduce the donor (biological father to both children) in the family tree , since we don't know his name, and we can't prove he's the actual father of both children (due to confidentiality reasons). Also, I'm not sure if this matters in the long run, since this man has no role in the 'family history... hence the question should we do 'genealoogy' in the strict genetic sense or a broader 'family history'. Any thoughts and suggestions are most welcome, thanks in advance, nina ___ Yahoo! Mail is the world's favourite email. Re: [LegacyUG] Exporting to a new Legacy Family File, what to expect?
Yes you could, but then you'd still be stuck with the part of the file that was giving the 3021 error, or whatever the problem was that necessitates a new file. Not a very satisfactory solution to toggle forth and back between two files to try to determine the last time some person was modified. - Original Message - From: Pat H [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: LegacyUserGroup@legacyfamilytree.com Sent: Wednesday, August 01, 2007 10:00 AM Subject: Re: [LegacyUG] Exporting to a new Legacy Family File, what to expect? To answer Valerie in Sunny Sydney... The book being referred to is Evidence Explained: Citing History Sources from Artifacts to Cyberspace, by Elizabeth Shown Mills (considered by many/most to be the expert in Citations). It is available on the Legacy Web Site. Go to the home page, then using the drop down menu on the Buy Now! button (on the right hand side) go to Software Books. Re: [LegacyUG] Sneak Peek of Legacy 7
The Mills book is basically how to reference genealogical sources correctly. The version I looked at was outdated (1996?) and I don't recall it showing how to reference some forms of electronic media. Genealogists take this as the authority on how to source from what I gather. I try to abide by MLA formatting with my sources since my wife is an English professor (She can spell-I can't) :) APA is another popular sourcing format for the pseudo sciences such as psychology and sociology (My majors in college). Google is your friend on these formats. From what I gathered from Renee's review is that we will have source templates. That is what I am thrilled about. Now that I think about it I hope we are allowed to build our own templates in whatever format we chose and not have to be married only to Mill's templates. I can only hope. Sourcing has been somewhat weak in this program and I miss using the now defunct Ultimate Family Tree that would allow me to format my source templates how I wanted. That program was actually one of the first programs to have Mill's templates built in to it. There were a lot of features in that program I would like to see implemented into Legacy. That program kicked arse and was years ahead of its time in ease of use and functionality. TMG tried to do this, but it became too complex for most users and IMHO is counter-intuitive. Oh and thanks to FTM for killing that program. Don't get me wrong Legacy filled it's shoes for my use and I like the mom and pops approach business model they have. More of a family all of us are because of it and these folks are very respectful even with what comes through this list :) Basically, it sounds like Legacy is growing up and I am glad to see the push on better sourcing options within the program as long as it maintains it's intuitiveness and data integrity. I pray the Legacy programming gurus give us the option to build our own templates. I'll be glad to lend you my UFT with it's Windows 3.1 16 bit GUI functionality overlaid on foxpro 16bit to take a gander at :) Joe Valeris Garton wrote: Could some one please tell me what this book is that has been referred to here ? Could I throw my unpopular 2 cents in and say I HATE bottom posting? I do not have very much space on my screen for messages to show, and to have to scroll down for every one of the 200 or so messages I get each day is a pain. I do agree it is much easier to follow if you bottom post, but to just simply have repeated post after repeated post come up with no idea of whether or not the answer matters to one is annoying, at least. I try to follow the conventions of whatever groups I join. In reviewing posts on this group, top posting seems to be the consensus. I find top posting, with prior remarks (but not repeated lines at the bottom of the messages), easiest because I prefer not to scroll to the bottom of a post before reading it. In fact, I generally skip reading those posts altogether. Top vs. bottom posting seems to be a preference. It's really not a huge deal either way, though. RE: [LegacyUG] Re: Sneak Peek of Legacy 7 - should be Bottom Posting
My outlook set up apparently defaults to top posting, I didn't know I had a choice of top or bottom. It is a good thing that it is set up that way, huh. Thanks for the tip! -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Cathy Sent: Wednesday, August 01, 2007 7:14 PM To: LegacyUserGroup@legacyfamilytree.com Subject: Re: [LegacyUG] Re: Sneak Peek of Legacy 7 - should be Bottom Posting I loathe bottom posting as it means too much scrolling - and often I have to click another button as well as I use Eudora in Compact mode which auto snips what it sees as quotes and doesn't always get it right with interspersed or bottom posted messages . This list is about the only list on which I bother to read the message if it is bottom posted. Too much else to do rather than unnecessary scrolling. The vast majority of posters on genealogy lists fortunately top post. With top posting, if you are following a thread closely, you don't need to scroll down to read the (hopefully snipped) previous message. If you're not, you can scroll to get the context. Building web pages. Wm Voss Karl Plenge wrote: Only you must use « (alt 0171) and » (alt 0187) in place of and or Legacy will read them as simple characters. I have only done this in Notes and Sources, but the single and have worked for me there. Where do you have to use the alt characters? I only do this for my GEDCOM exports to rootsweb, perhaps exporting to other sites has issues with this. Have you unlocked the real power of Legacy? Give me top posting too, anyday. Re: [LegacyUG] Passage Express
Second question: If I send a Passage Express CD to someone, is it acceptable to send them an install copy of Legacy (almost 30 meg) on the CD. If they have dial-up it would be a long download. And how much disk space would be required to install Legacy and run the Passage Express CD? (I have a 500 gig drive, so I don't worry about disk space on my own computer.) [LegacyUG] Marriage List Problem
When I select View Marriage List, Legacy freezes and the top toolbar greys-out. There is no error message, just nothing. I've run Check Repair and rebooted, but the problem still occurs. I have Deluxe 6.0.079 and would prefer to avoid downloading the latest build if possible since it seems there's a rash of trouble messages on the list after each release and I'm not sufficiently technical or patient to mess around with those sorts of problems; I just want to search for and document family trouble-free. Re: [LegacyUG] Private question
Hi Tom, No there isn't. I'm not sure why you want to do this. You can exclude the Living from exports and from reports. It's usually better to use the normal way Legacy handles privacy for the living rather than the special Private setting so it can be used for people you really want to keep Private. Re: [LegacyUG] Marriage List Problem
Hi Kirsten, I think you've met a problem that happens very occasionally to some people. The window is opening but off screen. If I remember correctly, to fix it: find Legacy2.usr in the Legacy Program folder and delete it. Restart Legacy and it will be recreated. This .usr file sometimes is corrupted. It holds the settings for windows so you'll have to resize the various windows again to your liking.
