[LegacyUG] Printing charts
From: Bill: I would like to print an ancestor wall chart with all the family members in the file, including all the siblings, partners and children in the data base. The only way I have found of including everyone is to generate a multiple line of decent report. Does anyone know a way of doing this? Hope to hear from someone soon. Bill Perth Western Australia. Re: [LegacyUG] Printing charts
Siblings, Children of the siblings, and partners of the siblings have no place in an ancestor chart as they are NOT your ancestors (unless a cousin marriage is involved and if so a regular ancestor chart will handle that automatically). They are mere relatives of your ancestors. Your ancestors are your parents, grandparents, great Grandparents, etc. -- The Verminator "The path to citizenship begins with LEGAL immigration" -- Original message -- From: "Bill & Dorothy Samson" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > From: Bill: > > > > I would like to print an ancestor wall chart with all the > family members in the file, including all the siblings, partners and > children in the data base. > > The only way I have found of including everyone is to > generate a multiple line of decent report. Not currently with Legacy 6. You can do it with the addon Legacy TreeDraw. We've been told that Wall Charts are coming with Legacy 7 (See in archives - subject was "Sneak Peek of Legacy 7") Sounds like you are really looking for multiple descendant charts. Funny that... and there I was thinking I was discribing the imprecise usage of a specific genealogical term, i.e. "Ancestor Chart" There may well be a chart that shows the relationships the person wants, but whatever type of chart it will be it will NOT be an Ancestors Chart; just as a descendants chart should not include stepchildren, foster children, or adopted children. While there is no doubt that they are members of the family; no amout of paperwork, wishing, praying or loving will make them actual descendants. Perhaps it is long past time that the family historians got together and decided on real names for these kinds of charts instead of usurping and trying to re-define regular standard genealogical terms. My word, you are being pedantic. When I do charts they are *my* charts and I will put in them what *I* want and expect others will do the same. I couldn't really care less what they may or may not be called nor whether I am a genealogist or a family historian. Your pseudonym suits btw. Re: [LegacyUG] Multimedia Backup (was Keeping two databases ... )
hwedhlor wrote Incidentally, referring to your example of the Lancashire location, my previous genealogy program, Ancestral Quest, would have dealt with that issue simply by searching on all entries like the one with the shortened version of Lancashire, and replacing them with the preferred version. Does Legacy have a similar capability. Yes, it does! But if you had used Search and Replace on the Tools menu to replace all instances of "Liverpool, Lancs, England" with "Liverpool, Lancashire, England" and you already had a location of "Liverpool, Lancashire, England" you would then have TWO locations the same and would need to do the Combine operation! -- Jenny M Benson Have you unlocked the real power of Legacy? Re: [LegacyUG] Names in Address List
Susan Daily wrote lots of times in the address field I use the privacy [[brackets]] to list stuff that otherwise won't print (like a town name, when I already put the town in the location field). Oh, I'm not alone, then?! I hate to have a report which reads something like "...was baptised on 27 February 1828 in Eynsford, Kent, England (Baptist Chapel, Eynsford, Kent England)" so I just put "Baptist Chapel" in the Name field of the Address - and if I knew it I would enter the street address also - and in the City field I enter "[[Eynsford]]". I can appreciate that this would not suit a lot of people, but it works for me! -- Jenny M Benson Have you unlocked the real power of Legacy? More details: Search > Miscellaneous search > Focus group > 'View/select focus group' button - add as many people and descendants that fit your criteria, save and close your list - Back at Miscellaneous search, 'Create list' button > Options > Advanced Tagging - select 'Everyone in Search list' button, select an unused tag no eg 8 or 9, close your list - Go to File > Export to > Gedcom file, choose all the settings you'd like to show as much or as little detail in the Gedcom, go to 'Record selection' button, choose 'All records with an individual tag" of # use the tag no you allocated for your focus group. Re: [LegacyUG] Where do I enter the age at death.
well, I put it in the source details of the birth (or alt. birth) myself... - I bet that wasn't what you would expect! But I would take whatever document gave me that age, and then calculate the birth date. If I didn't have a birth date before, then I would enter CAL 1822 (or whatever) in the birth field, and use this as a birth source - and in the source notes it would say Age 30 in 1852 - birth calculates to 1822. If I had a birth date of something in 1822 from another source, I would still add this new information as a birth source, as more proof. If I had a different birthdate, say 1815 then I would create an alt.birth event, and use this as the source. If I was SURE of the 1815 birthdate, then I think it was advised somewhere that you can change an alt.birth event to something else - maybe disproved birth? I wouldn't put the age in the death notes or anywhere else, in case I found a different date later, and forgot to change it! The program calculates the age at death for you automatically, and I'd find it confusing if they didn't match! Anyway, that is what I would do I'm sure there are a lot of different thoughts out there! [LegacyUG] Bug on Ages Report Option?
I played with Ctrl-A again, and this time was curious what a report would look like. So I clicked on the bottom left "Print Report", then clicked on Preview. I then unchecked both RINs and Shadowed boxes, but noticed the shadowed boxes remained in Preview and in the generated PDF. (Shadowed boxes presumably being the shading in the headers. If it meant something else, then no shadowed boxes are showing up to begin with.) Can anyone verify? [LegacyUG] Legacy v7 - Sources based on _Evidence_ by Mills
Hi user group and Legacy staff, I listened to Geoff's interview with Dear Myrt and carefully read Renee Zamora's blog entries about the v7 Sneak Peek. All the information on sources and bibliography creation sound very promising! I know that _Evidence Explained_ just came out this month, but I truly hope that the powers that be will make sure the v7 source template incorporates as much of this second book as possible. There is so much more information here and the source components are carefully described and laid out. Mills' first book certainly still stands on its own merit, but the new book expands to many other types of sources and does justice to all the online resources people use more often these days. Renees' post said that there will be bibliography output capability and I really look forward to this. The formatting is different between a footnote and a bibliography. While v6 will provide a master source list, it does not put the components in bibliography format, which has periods instead of commas and does not include the citation detail. I'm seeing the need to break the author field into first and last name so that the bibliography can sort by author's last name. I'm sure this is all part of migrating one's sources over to the v7 format. I just want to make sure every effort is made to pull as much from _Evidence Explained_ as possible because it is such a great resource. Although I initially expected Legacy to back up _all_ multimedia files, I like this format better, where only the linked images are backed up. If there were a move to change that format I would hope that there would also be a switch to make it optional. John, John Zimmerman Mesa, Arizona Have you unlocked the real power of Legacy? Ann Parsons, To print what is displayed on the screen this method works very well for me. I use a small image editing program called "IrfanView" which can be downloaded free from: http://www.irfanview.com/ First install IrfanView on your computer, then follow these steps. 1. In Legacy (or any other program), get things/people lined up the way you want 2. Hold down the "Alt" key and press the "Print Screen" key 3. Open Irfanview 4. Click "Edit", then "Paste" 5. Use the left mouse button to draw a rectangle around the part of the image you want to print 6. Click "Edit", the "Crop Selection" 7. Then you can print the image, or save it to a file, or Copy and paste it into another application. Hope this helps. Gail, Whilst have no feeling one way or the other about Legacy accomodating a format compatible with Mills's latest output, I would hope that it will maintain the flexibility that has characterised the program. One of the strengths of Legacy is the way in which it can be used to suit different countries, cultures and individual ways of working and in my opinion it would be most regrettable if this is sacrificed on the altar of standardisation. In particular I have no wish whatsoever to have to redo all my web pages because of a change in the format of sources, or anything else for that matter. Re: [LegacyUG] Names in Address List
Rich, Broadly speaking it is equivalent to your American Nursing home. We have two types, one of which is operated by the private sector (and in this I include voluntary (charitable) and not for profit) and also those in the state sector which are usually run by the local authorities. The above relates to the current situation and has varied over our history from the times of the old workhouses, through nursing homes when nearly all were state controlled, to the present mixed position. Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy v7 - Sources based on _Evidence_ by Mills
Hi Ron, don't get me wrong - I'm all for flexibility! I would definitely not want that sacrificed either. As much as Ms. Mills has tried to bring a bit of standardization to sourcing, she even freely admits that it is an art as much as a science. I still grapple with sources and all of mine seem to still be different than the ones in 885 pages of her book!! My main goal, before having "the perfect format," truly is to just ensure I and others can find/retrace my research steps. I also grapple with the sometimes competing needs of database efficiencies vs. formatting for possible later written publication. I'm still aiming to do both, but it's a hard road. My hopes for Legacy v7 are just things like needing to split the author name input into two fields so that a report could print first name first (for footnotes) or last name first (for bibliographies). I definitely do not want to be limited with the templates and am hopeful that Renee was right when she said we could create our own templates. I'm sure I'll be hand-crafting a few. My final thought is that I don't want to come across as a sourcing snob - a sourcing nerd maybe! - but not a snob. As long as I can follow someone's footnote to its source, I will never be the one to say the format is not good! I still feel like a total novice with all of this and I'm just striving to do a good job for my two little descendants and their future descendants. RE: [LegacyUG] Legacy v7 - Sources based on _Evidence_ by Mills
I too listened to the Myrt interview this weekend and read Renee's blog - it sounds like Geoff R. is trying keeping to keep V7 very hush hush until the last minute. Of course, all this speculation builds anticipation and interest ;>). This group has really inspired me to be careful and consistent in my own sourcing through Legacy, but I do look forward to what Geoff said was a more user-friendly interface for sourcing. It is hard if you are a beginner to figure out how to enter information in the program so that it will develop a logical citation. In some ways, I think writing a Works Cited entry from scratch is almost easier. While "old pros" might feel comfortable with their personal system, whenever I am tackling something new I tend to rely on the advice of those who have gone on before so I don't get hung up trying to reinvent the wheel. I love Dear Myrt's blog and podcasts by the way. Very informative and fun! Are there other great ones out there? Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy v7 - Sources based on _Evidence_ by Mills
I sort of think that some might be missing part of my point. I made not have made it very clear in my earlier note and if so, I apologize. I'm actually asking for much *more* flexibility with source citation than we currently have. Right now, the output order, format, etc. is totally set and you cannot change it to suit your needs. The author goes in one spot, the title in another, and the publication facts in their own. There can be no blending of master source fields with citation detail fields in the output from v6. I'm asking for and hoping for much more flexibility in v7 to create whatever output order I want (Mills style or not). Although Geoff's interview highlighted the templates as a way to take out the guesswork with sources and make them standardized, I do believe the new source templates (and ability to create one's own custom template) will give this much-needed flexibility, yet not force everyone to start with a blank piece of paper if they don't want to. I do respect everyone's desire to do sources their own way and don't want to push one method over another. RE: [LegacyUG] Legacy v7 - Sources based on _Evidence_ by Mills
Without giving away "too much", the v7 will allow you to continue with the existing sources, or use the new templates. Like Gail mentioned, they will offer the additional flexibility that v6 currently does not have. You will have the ability to create your own templates, adjust the existing ones, etc. Personally, I can't wait to have them fully operational. For years we have had to wonder exactly what goes where to attain the desired output. In v7, you won't have to wonder. Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy v7 - Sources based on _Evidence_ by Mills
For years we have had to wonder exactly what goes where to attain the desired output. In v7, you won't have to wonder. Geoff, thank you, thank you, thank you, and I have only been waiting for a few months. A week or so ago I asked if anyone had developed a chart showing where the various input locations actually did or did not come out. I haven't yet received a response. Perhaps this could be included in the help system? At the moment I am entering some cemetery records and with my limited knowledge of the program, I can find 13 different places where the whole or parts of this info. could go. The downside of flexibility for the inexperienced. regards Mike - Original Message From: Geoff Rasmussen <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: LegacyUserGroup@legacyfamilytree.com Sent: Tuesday, 28 August, 2007 8:34:33 AM Subject: RE: [LegacyUG] Legacy v7 - Sources based on _Evidence_ by Mills Without giving away "too much", the v7 will allow you to continue with the existing sources, or use the new templates. [LegacyUG] Free Printscreen Program
There is a free printscreen program that allows the user to capture all, or part of a screen, with, or without the cursor showing, and place the results in the clipboard, or anywhere else on the computer they desire. The resulting captured image may be pasted into the location of your choice, as is, or with a shadow, etc. The program may be downloaded from Gadwin Systems, Inc. at: http://www.gadwin.com/printscreen/ I've used it for years at home, and at the office, and can recommend it highly. I am also familiar with Irfanview, and recommend it also. The printscreen program just eliminates the steps of using Irfanview to crop the screen capture by allowing the user to drag a rectangle over the area of the screen they wish to capture right from the start. Gadwin Printscreen also allows the user to select what keystrokes activate the program. John John Zimmerman Mesa, Arizona L.W. Re: [LegacyUG] Free Printscreen Program
Hi Listers Another freeware printscreen program I like to use, which helps with text or image conversion or just copying/pasting into other programs is Printkey2000. http://www.webtree.ca/newlife/printkey_info.htm I've used it for years at work and at home. RE: [LegacyUG] Free Printscreen Program
Actually, all you have to do is push the "PrtScn" button on your computer and it copies whatever is on the screen to your clip board. If you want just the active window copied, hold the Alt button down while pressing PrtScn. Then just paste into Wordpad or anything else. > -Original Message- > From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] > [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf > Of Tracy Skegg > Sent: Monday, August 27, 2007 9:39 PM > To: LegacyUserGroup@legacyfamilytree.com > Subject: Re: [LegacyUG] Free Printscreen Program > > Hi Listers > Another freeware printscreen program I like to use, which helps with > text or image conversion or just copying/pasting into other programs > is Printkey2000. > > http://www.webtree.ca/newlife/printkey_info.htm > > I've used it for years at work and at home. > Cheers > Tracy > > > Have you unlocked the real power of Legacy? Re: [LegacyUG] Free Printscreen Program
Faststone Image Viewer also has a variety of screen capture options in its File Menu. You can choose to capture part or all of a screen - rectangle or freestyle and save to clipboard or file or image viewer. So no extra cropping needed. I actually use another program for screen capture (Clipmate - which isn't free but sits on my Taskbar and I just have to click the partial screen capture pic on it and draw around the part I want and it's on the clipboard) Faststone is free, small and fast and will minimise to a bar on your screen. I find it easier to use than IrfanView which I used to use constantly as a quick viewer. I now usually only use it to view odd file formats. http://www.faststone.org/FSViewerDetail.htm Cathy At 09:24 AM 28/08/2007, you wrote: There is a free printscreen program that allows the user to capture all, or part of a screen, with, or without the cursor showing, and place the results in the clipboard, or anywhere else on the computer they desire. John Have you unlocked the real power of Legacy?
