WDYTYA is a British TV program not a station. It's success in the UK over
recent years has helped fuel the interest in Genealogy. This show is linked
to that program and is also sponseored by other societies etc such as the
Society of Genealogists. It is THE premier show in the UK.

until I had verified each fact about each person I'd never put it in my main

I can claim it all as having been verified by me.
Now, about notifying others of errors...

Subject: [LegacyUG] A question of etiquette

Hi, I'm new to the group, and not sure if this is the right place to post this
question, but I'm sure if it's not, someone will tell me where to go.  g

I'm fairly new to genealogical research, and putting together a database based
on gedcoms, and other information that I received from several sources.  After
putting everything together in one file, I started looking for errors and
problems.  I discovered that I had a 5th great grandfather named Francis West.
At some point, he had been merged with a Sir Francis West, as if they were the
same person.  There were enough similarities that it was an easy mistake to
make, but they were obviously not the same person.  I unlinked Sir Francis and
pruned that branch from my tree.

So, enough background, now the question.  In continuing my research, looking
for the true parents of Francis, I have found a couple online family trees that
have made the same mistake (merging Francis and Sir Francis into one person).
What is the proper way to deal with this situation?  Do I send an email to the
people with this error and let them know that their tree probably has an error,
giving them enough information to confirm it for themselves?  Or do I just let
it go, hoping that they will figure it out for themselves?  Is there some sort
of standard?

Thanks for any information.
I'll be back later with some other questions.

Well, here in the USA, we have a television network
named BBC, which airs favorite British shows, (usually
comedies), but we can petition them to carry the
program, or internet it. Would the show be interested
in bringing Geoff over (to Britian) for a session or
two. We know have our tasks to pursue.

I don't think he added the [Sources] [Notes] tag. That's the way all Legacy
events are structured. The location of the [Sources] is where the
superscripted number of the source will appear. The notes will be added to
the end of the event entry.

To all who have responded to my question, I thank you. You have given me a

sources for everything else.

I don't think he added the [Sources] [Notes] tag. That's the way all Legacy

events are structured. The location of the [Sources] is where the
superscripted number of the source will appear. The notes will be added to
the end of the event entry.

Not trying to be funny, but he probably added the [Sources] and
[Notes] tags at the end of each of the event sentence structures so
that the sources and notes would show in the sentence!!

Last Fall, Boyd Miller very kindly shared with me his Data and Source
Conventions for Legacy. I recently tried to contact him via the e-mail

I am wondering if anyone knows the purpose of his adding [Sources]

Re: [LegacyUG] Boyd Miller - Sentence Structure

2008-05-02 Thread Elizabeth Richardson
I'm saying, look at all the Legacy event structures. They all (each and
every one of them!!!) end with [Sources] [Notes]. That's the Legacy default.
I myself have restructured my census sentences and, yes, I saw to it that
they included at the end [Notes] [Sources], order reversed, because I wanted
my source superscript to appear at the end of the notes. You could remove
either or both of them if you so chose. No, your sources will not appear
together with the event sentence. They appear at the end of the report.

It may not show up in yours, but it sure does in mine. Go in and fill out an
event, add source and in the notes field for the event add a note, then look
at the bottom of your Event screen and see if your notes aren't added to
your sentence.

Hi Bruce,

Welcome to the Legacy User Group and thanks for thinking about

Do read the list guidelines - see link at the bottom of the email - and
you'll find this isn't the right place for your particular question :-)

Rootsweb hosts many lists and some are especially for new researchers.
http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/
Rootsweb is now part of Ancestry.com but unlike ancestry it is free.

The answer to your question depends on where you find the wrong
information. Some websites enable you to post a note or flag with
alternate information or to say this is your ancestor ...

Unfortunately there are many researchers who don't want to know that
they've made a mistake.
To ensure you're not one of them, make sure you check all information in
gedcoms and look for better sources for the information. It would be
great to have a Primary source for every bit of information but we often
have to make do with something else.

Getting back on topic ;-) However, you can set the surety level of all
your sources in Legacy. If you have imported sources with the gedcoms,
you can also go through and mark them as verified once you've seen the
source for yourself.

Enjoy your research and Legacy and come back to us with your next Legacy
question,

Cathy

Hi, I'm new to the group, and not sure if this is the right place to
post this question, but I'm sure if it's not, someone will tell me where
to go. g

I'm fairly new to genealogical research, and putting together a database
based on gedcoms, and other information that I received from several
sources. After putting everything together in one file, I started
looking for errors and problems. I discovered that I had a 5th great
grandfather named Francis West. At some point, he had been merged with
a Sir Francis West, as if they were the same person. There were enough
similarities that it was an easy mistake to make, but they were
obviously not the same person. I unlinked Sir Francis and pruned that
branch from my tree.

So, enough background, now the question. In continuing my research,
looking for the true parents of Francis, I have found a couple online
family trees that have made the same mistake (merging Francis and Sir
Francis into one person). What is the proper way to deal with this
situation? Do I send an email to the people with this error and let
them know that their tree probably has an error, giving them enough
information to confirm it for themselves? Or do I just let it go,
hoping that they will figure it out for themselves? Is there some sort
of standard?

Thanks for any information.
I'll be back later with some other questions.

Bruce

Boyd may have changed around some of the Event sentence structures to read as

I don't think he added the [Sources] [Notes] tag. That's the way all Legacy

events are structured. The location of the [Sources] is where the
superscripted number of the source will appear. The notes will be added to
the end of the event entry.

  4) Click on the red download button.

What red download button? Mine still says 7.0.077 is the latest.

Thanks for that. I now have the updated version.

1) You need to be connected to the Internet
2) Start your current version of Legacy Charting
3) Click on the tab Tips Updates
4) Click on the red download button.

What I was trying to convey was that version 7.0.077 (and the previous
beta version for that matter) didn't indicate that a newer version was
available. When clicking on the Tips Updates tab, I was still being
told that I had 7.0.077 (correct at that time) and that it was the
latest version (incorrect). Also, no red Download button. So your new
version available detection code doesn't work. Or perhaps it now does,
but we'll have to await another version to find out whether it does or not.

Chris,

Yes, it is an add-on and it reads the .fdb files in order to produce the charts
which you have specified in Legacy Charting and applies the conditions on
publication which you have selected.

Just to let Luc know ... my update did display correctly in Legacy Charting,
indicating a new update was available and the update link in the Charting
program worked properly.

When I clicked on the update link, it connected, downloaded and the update
installed smoothly.

Had you closed and reopened the program?

Neither the Legacy Home Tab nor Legacy Charting updates this

The date of the picture - if I'm lucky enough to know it - or an

However mostly I end up leaving it blank.
