Re: [LegacyUG] Please review LUG guidelines!

Sherry,

These guidelines are important - I do agree; but there is a very
simple matter that Legacy itself could do that would really help
newbies - and indeed occasionally 'oldbies' with slipping fingers.

Could you please get your techies to set the security on your servers
to ** bounce ** any html emails and anything containing an attachment
with the message

'Sorry - we can't accept html or attachments - please re-send in plain text'

Easy to do - and would save occasional aggro.

Two choices, either way you'll have to correct them one-by-one, working in
the Location Master List:

1. Highlight the location. In the Virtual Earth map navigate to the accurate
(or preferred) location. Right Click. Click OK.
[as an aside, when working with a general location like "Michigan" or
"England", I like to position the pin either where the name shows on the map
or
at the capitol city, so I can quickly recognize it.]

2. Highlight the location. Click the Globe (Geo Options Menu). Select Geo
Location List. Search for the location, make your choices, and save.

Alastair,

I wish we could! Our previous mail list software allowed us to reject HTML
messages and attachments, as well as offer a digest version, but
unfortunately the one we have now doesn't.

Of course, when HTML messages were bounced, I got a constant string of
messages to Support with the question "why didn't my message show up on the

Thanks for using Legacy.

Matt,

I installed Legacy V7 on two computers, one with WindowsXP and one with
Windows Vista, and my locations were not automatically geo coded. Are you
sure you didn't geo code your file?

I think you have two alternatives. Either blank out the coordinates for
each location manually or reinstall Legacy V7 and use restore your family
files from Legacy V6.

Yes Legacy did have Mapping in Version 6. It was a button in the lower left
corner of the Location List that worked when the location had lat long
coordinates. I also personally put a google map in the homepage section of
every cemetery address in the Address Lists for Events. Been doing that
since 5

Don't get me wrong. I love Legacy, but sometimes the improvements create
more problems. Something for Support to work on. I still won't use any other
program because Legacy still outperforms any other Genealogy program

Sorry but I don't think that's the way the list rules work. I don't
think
they're optional and up to you to decide when to ignore them. And it
isn't fair to those who are here for Legacy only (as the rules clearly

Well, after all this time waiting for the folks at Legacy to solve the
"problem", I think I may have solved it myself. Previously (months ago)
I had Googled the error message and came up with a great many hits. Many
involved a USB drive that had been removed or had the letter
re-assigned. I have some USB drives and I played with them trying to
stop the error. I had no luck. After I posted my original message below,
I Googled the error message again and found a result that I hadn't seen
before. This led me to try something I hadn't done before.

My HP printer has two slots for memory cards that show up as drives on
my PC. I don't ever use them so I went to Device Manager and disabled
them. Problem solved - so far. I still don't know why Legacy Charting
was the only program to cause the error to appear.

Anyway, if you have a problem like the one described below try playing
with any USB drives and don't forget the memory card slots.

Happy Hunting,
David

Hi Jenny, What I wanted to relay is that I had saved or bookmarked several

was before the update to 7.0053. After the up date the bookmarks dissappeared

Do you know, I'd hardly noticed that section at the bottom and never
used it! I've had a little play with it now and I can't come up with an
obvious solution to your problem.

Did you save some bookmarks and have them appear for a while and then
they all disappeared, or have you never had a bookmarked template show
up in the list?

Perhaps with a little more information about exactly what steps you have
taken we can come up with something.

[LegacyUG] creating web pages - not picking up pictures

2008-07-14 Thread Syble Glasscock
legacyperrymanpictures this is what is coming up for the location of my
pictures.  I have a unique problem.  When my hard drive went down, the person
that installed the new one, let E be my XP operating system drive, and I have
the pictures stored on drive D which is another internal drive.  He made a
paratician of Drive E as C, with ME as the operating system for C, and of which
I never use.
I have all my pictures stored on Drive D in my multiply files named: Legacy
Perryman Pictures, Legacy Curry Pictures etc.  I have no problems getting the
pictures included in reports, but they are not included in the web page
creation.  I have a web site created with Legacy 6, but I'm not using Legacy 7.
Any suggestions?

eventually clear the error and Legacy Charting will continue to run as
if nothing had happened - until the next time I try to add someone to
the chart.

Here is a link to show you what the error looks like:
http://www.judivad.com/lc/ChartingError.jpg

Has anyone else seen this error, either in Legacy Charting or another
piece of software?

[LegacyUG] Repeat key

2008-07-14 Thread Jane Sarles
As a new user, I am tentatively exploring my way around Legacy, with the
help of the wonderful people on this list. I just want to share with
other new users a wonderful feature that I just stumbled on to (right
there in plain sight, that it was). That would be the "repeat" key. It
is so great to add children to a family, or input items that have
happened in the same location. It really makes inputting go much, much
faster.

Thanks to the developer for the great tool.

RE: [LegacyUG] creating web pages - not picking up pictures

2008-07-14 Thread ronald ferguson

Syble,

It doesn't matter where your picture files are as long as Legacy knows, and it
clearly does as you are seeing them in reports. I presume also that you can see
them attached to individuals in Family View (if you have any attached there).

This leads me to think that the problem lies in your Webpages settings. If they
are Event pictures do you have the Picture box checked in the Event section of
Internet>Web Pages>What? And under the "Other" tab do you have the appropriate
Picture details checked?

[LegacyUG] Source Confusion

2008-07-14 Thread Chick Lewis
I am converting from Family Tree Maker to Legacy but confused with the
way Legacy handles sources. I understand that a Master Source may be
used several times with different citations, but how do multiple
events use the same source? I have no trouble assigning a source to a
new event but there must be an easier way to assign a source to an old
event other than re-newing the event. There doesn't seem to be any
correlation between the events and sources. How do you tell which
belongs where?
For instance: I have an immigration event, a naturalization event, and
a residence event that are all sourced from the 1920 census and
transferred in from FTM. There is an "S" in the source window for the
immigration event, but nothing for the naturalization or residence
event. How do I get those two events to source the 1920 census
without having to re-create them? I have found nothing in the manual
or on-line help about adding a source to an existing event. Thanks...

section of Internet>Web Pages>What? And under the "Other" tab do you have
the appropriate Picture details checked?

To: LegacyUserGroup@legacyfamilytree.com

legacyperrymanpictures this is what is coming up for the location of my
pictures. I have a unique problem. When my hard drive went down, the
person that installed the new one, let E be my XP operating system drive,
and I have the pictures stored on drive D which is another internal drive.
He made a paratician of Drive E as C, with ME as the operating system for C,
and of which I never use.

I have all my pictures stored on Drive D in my multiply files named: Legacy
Perryman Pictures, Legacy Curry Pictures etc. I have no problems getting
the pictures included in reports, but they are not included in the web page
creation. I have a web site created with Legacy 6, but I'm not using Legacy
7. Any suggestions?

Re: [LegacyUG] Chronology Report

2008-07-14 Thread Leon Chapman
Try the Options button in Chronology.
The report is pretty much fixed, but you can change some column widths
and what gets printed.

If that doesn't work, you will need to use a different report.

RE: [LegacyUG] Chronology Report

2008-07-14 Thread Marilyn Brenk
When I pull up a Chronology report on a living person in my database, after
Life Range is lists their birth date - Present. That is everyone except me.
When I pull up my own chronology report is lists my birth date- A
bit creepy to say the least. Is there a way to fix this or should I just make
the best of the next 25 years???!?!? Thanks, Marilyn

Paul:

I haven't used it yet, but wouldn't it be the Census records > All
countries, except those listed? I hope that will work because I have a slew
of them to enter.

Has anyone created a Canadian Census Master Source?  If so, which template
did you use to start with before saving it?
Thank you,
