Pat (and Jess, too):

One day you'll probably be very thankful that you *did* write all those
"little notes." It's often not enough to simply record where you found
something; you need to also record exactly what you found and, as Elizabeth
says, the place to do that is in the comments or detail section of the
source citation. I quote text there exactly as I find it and couldn't count
the number of times that has saved me from having to re-check the original
source. I think it also adds considerable credibility to your citations
when you quote text--especially when your findings differ from other
researchers.

To the best of my knowledge there is no softwware package that allows
individual sourcing of the day, month, and year of a date, in the same vein
there is no package that allows individual sourcing of street number, street,
city, county, state, and country. I've never understood just why all packages
don't allow this. It seems the most natural thing in the world!

RE: [LegacyUG] Marriage sourcing

2008-08-01 Thread Jan Roberts
I can't quite see why this is a problem. Surely it takes but a second or
two to write a little note (the source text /comment tab would seem to be
the ideal place) or to add the single word (date) or (place) etc. in the
source detail. I can't see how it is any different to having two sources
which give slightly different information for say a name - in this case I
would 'write a little note' to explain the difference. Sometimes I have a
source for a surname (for example an obituary might alert me to the fact
that a woman married a JONES - e.g. survived by his daughter Mrs Mary JONES)
and later I find that Mary's husband was Fred JONES. One source is relevant
to the surname of her husband; the other is relevant to his first name. I
have to make a note about each.

Cheers,
Jan

Re: [LegacyUG] Sending Legacy data by email

2008-08-01 Thread Wendy Howard

Hi Jerry,

"I just joined the user group."

Welcome! :-) Please take a few moments to look over the links provided
at the end of every list post. Especially the guidelines, which will
tell you that you should post only in plain text, and that you should
turn off the "return receipt" when you post, amongst other useful things.

"Can data be sent by email from Legacy?"

Yes, you can email your data to other people.

If the other person is using Legacy, you can attach a .fdb file, which
is the Legacy data file. Take care to note if you are both using the
same version of Legacy - if I recall correctly, a later version will
read any earlier version's data files, but the older ones may not read a
file from a newer version.

It does not matter if one of you is using Deluxe, and the other
Standard, within the same version - the file is the same, but the
Standard user won't be able to access any data stored in the Deluxe
areas, is all.

If the other person does not have Legacy but uses another program, you
can export your data to a GEDCOM file and email that. Most, if not all,
genealogy/family history programs know how to import a GEDCOM file into
their own format.

Consider carefully whether you want to send your entire database, or
create a new file that contains only a part of your data (by copying
your file and then editing it). For example, I've recently started
correspondence with my mother's cousin and am going to send her a copy
of my file - but I'm only going to send her those branches that are
common to us both.

The Help files in Legacy are very good, and you will find a lot of
information about all of this there. Look up "export" and "focus
groups" to start you on that journey.

If the other person doesn't yet use a genealogy program, you can
generate reports in Legacy and save those on your hard drive to then email.

Other people, when I make contact and want to share information, often
receive a Ancestor or Descendant Chart from me in the first instance; my
current practise is to save the chart as a plain text file (.txt) and
then copy and paste the text into my email (rather than attaching a file
to the email), and change the font to a non-proportional one (such as
Courier) so the layout appears as intended. If our discussions
progress, then I will consider sending them a file containing more of my
data, sources, etc.

Hope this helps. :-)

Kind Regards,
Wendy Howard

I am adding my source as I go along, I'm adding people all from the
same book source, which I've created with the new source writer
template. As my pages change I simply update the detail with the new
page number. I then save to source clipboard, over writing what was
previously there and copy to the individuals and marraiges on that
page as I add them.

In the marriage screen there are two options for pasting source
clipboard. 1) Add clipboard source to marraige event 2) Add clipboard
source to all used fields.

When using option 2, it "reds" out all fields in the marraige event,
not just the one(s) I have filled in.

For instance, for my current marraige I only have a date, so I enter
that. However the source clipboard "add clipboard source to all used
fields" "reds" (meaning it's sourced) these fields: marraige date, in,
status, status date.

[LegacyUG] GPS for Individual Graves locations

2008-08-01 Thread Sheri Harris
Being a beginner genealogist and learning Legacy (v7), I'm wondering how to
enter GPS coordinates for individual graves in a cemetery? I'm using the
address icon, the little house icon, for the cemetery's main address but
only has one field for lat/long coordinates, and I'm also entering the
address in the location field, for example in the cemetery event;
Description: Greenwood Cemetery, Date: Date of burial and the Location:
Chattanooga 1954 Greenwood Rd, Hamilton, Tennessee, USA. I'm using the event
address (the little house icon again) mostly for correspondence reasons
since I can put in telephone numbers, e-mail, etc. I have several cemeteries
that are quite large and my relatives are spread out all over. It just
doesn't seem logical to enter a new location for each individual grave i.e.,
Chattanooga - lat/long coord, Hamilton, Tennessee, USA. I'm also wanting to
do this with some other locations that don't have or aren't associated with
a particular address. Right now I'm putting the information in the event
notes field along with a short description of the marker, and on a
spreadsheet. I would like to have a report that would print out the
individuals in the cemetery and the coordinates. I thought about creating a
new event just for the coordinates, would that work or is there another way?

Thanks for the help!

Sheri Harris

You can go to Advanced Tagging [Control-T] and do them one at a time. Click
Untag toward the top of the screen, select which tag # is desired, then
click on Everyone. This will apply the operation only to the tag selected.
Repeat for the next untagging operation.

Jenny,

It might be because it's the early hours for us Brits but I am not clear about
the above comment.

As you know I have always used the full address in the location field and am
happy with the reverse order (although I'm fine about having the option to use
either). However I am not clear about "ends with a comma". I do not use a
separate field for house/number, incorporating it in the same field as the
street - so mine reads: England, Lancashire, Eccles, 999 Park Street. I have
been trying putting the house name/number in a separate field and your comment
has made me realise that for the Chronological Report, in reverse it would
read: England, Lancashire, Eccles, Park Street, 999 which whilst horrible , and
has made me quickly go back to my previous practice ;-), it does not have a
comma at the end - so where is your comma?. Anyhow, maybe your suggestion
should be implemented!

in columns across the screen or page. There is an option for the
Details to begin with the Location in Country, State, County, City
order. If this option is not selected, the location may appear at the
start or it may not, depending on the item. If an Event Address is used
(and Event includes Birth, Baptism, Death and Burial) it always appears
at the end of the Details.

I would like the option to select for Details to begin with City,
County, State, Country.

I hope I make myself clear now.

I'm not talking about Event Sentences, I'm talking about Source Template

I'm saying I wish you could create Source Templates in the same way you
can create Event Sentences, rather than having to use Overrides

Phil, can you explain how changing an event sentence changes the way a
source is formatted?

Jenny, instead of trying to fit a square peg in a round hole (using the
source template that doesn't quite fit your wanted source formatting), why
don't you just use the basic source method for any specific source for which
the Source Writer is inappropriate? This, by the way, is not my poking at
the Source Writer. I'm actually a little more curious if this is one of
those sources where neither will quite fit the bill and wondering if there
is "another way to skin the cat."

Change the Event Sentence itself!!
If you click on an event for any individual and select edit you will to
taken to the event screen. At the bottom is an option to 'edit event
sentence definition'. Click on it.
You will be taken to a new screen that allows you to enter what you want

If, for example you are referencing a census event the default phrasing if
all fields are filled is "[HeShe] appeared on the [Desc] census [onDate]
[inPlace] [Source] [Notes]"

Change the sentence to one that suits you, adding fields from the list at
the bottom, and you will have a event description to suit you every time
you

use that event

Remember to change the other sentences underneath if you do not have all
the

fields filled in

Findagrave gives the plot location of a grave as

"The latitude and longitude must be in the form of degrees, minutes and

I don't know how to translate it to get minutes and seconds to numbers <

This is the first time I've attempted to enter Lat and Long.

Can anyone give me some pointers?

In the same manner as my other post regarding events

If you put the actual address in the description field not the Master
location field, and change the sentence to suit, you will get something like

"1841 Census 2 Smith Road, Blacktown, Yorkshire, England"
This will also appear on other reports in a similar manner depending on how
you altered the sentencing, e.g.,
" He appeared on the 1841 census at 2 Smith Road, Blacktown, Yorkshire,
England" ([Source] [Notes] if they are there.)

I wish there was a way to create one's own templates in much the same

find a SourceWriter Template gives me *almost* exactly what I want but
not quite and I end up having to use Overrides every time I use that

there is an odd instance that differs from the norm, but it's a bit
annoying when you have to do it for all the instances of a Master

Re: [LegacyUG] Removing duplicate source citations

2008-08-01 Thread Melody B
It's not the master sources I'm having difficulties with. It's the
citations on individual events. For example, for the birth event of Nerdly
Pfool, there will be 5 citations which not only all reference the same
Master Source but also have exactly - and I do mean Exactly - the same info
in the citation itself - details, text, comments, etc.

This is compounded by the fact that sometimes I have several different
Master Sources for an individual's event and each citation referencing those
many Master Sources has been duplicated many, many times.

I've already eliminated duplicate Master Sources. My problem is duplicate
citations.

Sourcing phone calls. Was: Re: [LegacyUG] overrides in SourceWriter template

2008-08-01 Thread Ward Walker

Elaine,

Good question. I've just been reading 'Evidence Explained' for the first
time and still getting used to proper sourcing. I think the key here is that
there is no artifact or reference that another researcher can look up, as
there would be with a letter or a transcript of an interview. Perhaps the
correct source is 'Personal Knowledge', where the person with whom you were
speaking is listed in the source. It is bad form to cite another person's
source that you have not yet personally seen, so you can only cite that
person's word. You could add that the information was conveyed to you in a
phone call, either in the Text/Comments tab of the master source or in the
detail for the specific citation. You could even mention how that person
knows the information, if not in the published citation (gets kind of long
and awkward) then at least in your comments stored with the source in
Legacy.

I've got so many sources to rewrite.

(Regarding overrides, I also don't see anyway to get rid of the 'privately
held' phrase, if you try to hijack the letter template and turn it into a
phone call source. I also don't see a way to create a whole new template. Of
course you can create your own source the old way, without the SourceWriter
wizard.)

I am trying to source a phone conversation. I started with interview,
then tried letter. Neither really fits the bill. I was able to
override the output in the detail, but can't get rid of privately
held. I don't even see where it's coming from.

Is there any place I can create my own template?

Subject: [LegacyUG] Removing duplicate source citations

Possibly due to merges, I have multiples of the exact same source citation for
many events on an individual - on a very large number of my people.

I'd like to get rid of the duplicates?

Any way other than by hand?

A side question would be if I have to do it by hand is there any way to select
those individuals which have a particular master source referenced more than
once for any event? (obviously a master source will be referenced more than
once for an individual, but I'm talking on the event level for that individual)

Or, is there any way to get the source citations to be sorted when I'm viewing
the sources for an individual?

[LegacyUG] overrides in SourceWriter template

2008-08-01 Thread Elaine Shuman
I am trying to source a phone conversation. I started with interview,
then tried letter. Neither really fits the bill. I was able to
override the output in the detail, but can't get rid of privately
held. I don't even see where it's coming from.

Is there any place I can create my own template?
thanks
Elaine

RE: [LegacyUG] GPS lat and long format

2008-08-01 Thread Dave
Well, I disagree. Using your logic you can take anything to do with Legacy
and keep going and going and going. Before long anything can be tied back
to Legacy. I think the list rules are perfectly clear. And I fail to
understand why some users think they have the right to stretch them to meet
their own wishes.

The thread started out about entering longitude and latitude into Legacy.
That person got their question answered and said so. But others just
couldn’t stop. One of them even mentioned that it had "reached the end of
relevance to Legacy". They were right. Below are some quotes after it
strayed. They sure don't seem to have anything to do with Legacy and its
add-ons to me.

BTW, nothing keeps people from chatting offline about anything they want to.
But why do all of the subscribers have to read it?

Ahem! If you had never seen the rocky southeast Alaska coastline, perhaps
you wouldn't make such an ignorant comment. The coastlines do not change
here, at least not without an earthquake, and I'm not walking on sand, which
we do not have, but rather a paved road. Trust me, it isn't
eroding/changing.

That's neither here nor there...but I do know that GPS units vary in quality
and some of the lesser units are not nearly as accurate as one would wish.
The higher end GPS units are much more accurate... and the plotting has a
great deal to do with it.

Ahem! By definition, maritime coastlines change on each change of tide.
Do you think you're immune from coastal erosion? :-)

The GPS system has a potential maximum accuracy of 30cm (1 foot).
However, that signal, the P(Y) channel, is encrypted and the encryption code
changes daily so it is only available to the miltary and specific government
users. Typical civilian GPS accuracy is within 15 meters (50 feet),
depending on a half-dozen factors affecting the satellite signal.

There are high accuracy GPS units for surveying and similar uses that
receive multiple satellite frequencies and compute the delay difference
between the frequencies - obviously bigger and much more expensive than the
handheld units.

I think we've reached the end of relevance to Legacy...
*
I can walk around the inside lane of a 400 meter track and it will show me
wandering all over the place - including outside lanes and/or infield. Even
when it shows my accurate path, it will measure quite a bit differently from
one lap to the next - and never 400 meters (sometimes off by as much as 10
meters)! Sorry, this is definitely off topic, but did want to comment on the
frequent inaccuracy of GPS.

I think it has everything to do with Legacy when people can't understand why
their coordinates for a cemetery take them to the middle of a river in a
program they expect to correctly plot with GPS.  Some understanding of the
technology is necessary before some people can understand what Legacy is
trying to do with Visual Earth and GPS in our genealogy software and on our
computers so that Legacy (Millenia) doesn't take all the blame when it fails
to work correctly.

We are bouncing between my Legacy location list, Virtual Earth, and
Google Earth, visually finding cemeteries, getting good latitude and
longitude, deciding where to put push pins, and at the same time
cleaning up long form and short form Legacy locations, etc. It is
disconcerting when VE sometimes zooms off to Algeria when we are looking
for Coal Town Cemetery in Purvis, MS, but, other than the occasional
problems finding the right town and county, it works marvelously well.
So we are happy with our progress. It is well worth the effort.

Re: [LegacyUG] Where to enter a street address?

2008-08-01 Thread Bruce Jones
Very interesting thread.
It appears to me that the new mapping feature has changed things.
Before that, Legacy "encouraged" us to use just 4 fields for location even
though they made 9 fields available.
Following this "encouragement" meant that Legacy could implement the Geo
Location and USA County verification features.
Now it seems we might need to change if we want to fully utilize the mapping
feature (to identify multiple addresses in the same city).
It seems to me we have two options:
1. Combine the address with the city WITHOUT a comma. This preserves the 4
position location so it can be used with the Geo Location and USA County
verifier.
2. Abandon the 4 field location "standard" using 5 or more fields for the
street address and anything else desired. This means you will not be able to
use the Geo or County verification features.

Actually, Cathy Vallevieni proposed an elegant solution earlier that sort of
combines both options. Repeating here
1. Enter the city, county, etc. (not the street # and name) and use Geo
Location List (world globe on the right) to give it the correct format and
save that.
2. In the Family Screen add the street # and street name WITH NO COMMA
BETWEEN THE STREET NAME AND CITY otherwise it messes up the structure and
the system thinks the city is the county.
3. Map the individual which inserts the exact Longitude and Latitude for
this address.
Thanks, Cathy

I think I would word #2 slightly differently. "otherwise the County
Verification feature will not work, giving you warning messages". By Family
Screen she is referring to the various Location fields.

Note that if you want to map multiple locations in one city, you MUST HAVE
multiple Master Location entries for that city (one per map "pin").

This is how I see it.
Thoughts anyone?
