Re: [LegacyUG] Has anybody tried to use Legacy to build an Adam and Eve family tree?

2008-08-14 Thread Pat Hickin
I don't know that this would be any help but there is a Springer family
history that purports to do that. When I first saw the title, I assumed
it was a spoof, but the author was serious.

(There were Springers in Delaware by the 18th century; the author
contended that they were descended from Springers in Sweden who were
descended from a Thuringian nobleman called Louis the Springer and that
said Louis was descended from Charlemagne, who had proved his ancestry
back to Adam and Eve! Or had it done by people who could read and write!
(some monks I presume!)

As well as I recall the author proceeded to give the details. I feel
sure it's of virtually no historical value, but if you're interested in
taking a look -- - -

Well it just occurred to me to Google Charlemagne, genealogy, and Adam,
which gave me this Springer website:
http://www.thecolefamily.com/hobby/springer.htm
and the websites lists the entire Springer "genealogy," including all
the Biblical figures in the "genealogy" (Methusaleh among them) back to
Adam! Needless to say, there's a disclaimer as to accuracy!

I think it's safe enough to assume that all people of European ancestry
are descended from Charlemagne since we have about the following number
of ancestors at 3 1/2 generations per century (assuming no overlaps, an
obvious impossibility)

2;4;8;16 -- 1900AD(at 4 gens)
32;64;128 -- 1800AD(at 3 gens)

512m, 1billion, 2 billion, 4 billion --1100 AD(4)
8 billion, 16 billion, 32 billion -- 1000 AD (3)
64 billion, 128 b, 256b, 512b- 900 AD(4)
1024 billion, 2048 billion, 4096 billion (3) (or am I up to the

82,000 B; 164,000 B; 238,000b; 480,000 B (4) 700AD
Well a million Billion is surely at least a Trillion!!
So by Charlemagne's time we'd have billions of ancestors whereas there
were probably not more than a 100-200 million people in all of Europe in
his day. So we're probably all descended from Charlemagne, who traced
his ancestry to Adam!

I would really appreciate any suggestions.

I am hoping someone can help me. I have upgraded from Legacy 6 deluxe to
Legacy 7 deluxe but had downloaded the free version of charting. Now when I
click on the charting icon within Legacy program, I get the error:
m_bExitProgram=truee and I am told to go to the website and download an
update. I have done this but still get the error. I would be grateful for
any suggestions as to what I should do next.

RE: [LegacyUG] Has anybody tried to use Legacy to build an Adam and Eve family tree?

2008-08-14 Thread Lorna Voskuilen
Dear Pat,

Thank you for taking the time to reply to my question. I'm afraid the
question wasn't clear - I'm not trying to trace my family tree back to Adam
and Eve. I'm studying the Bible and trying to get a clearer picture of the
begats and begets. I just want something simple to show the timeline from
Adam and Eve to Jesus, with places of birth and death and a few notes.

I started using the free version of Legacy years ago because I was trying to
keep a record of my immediate family; I have just gone downward from my
grandparents on both sides and added my own children, grandchildren and
great-grandchildren as they came along. I like Legacy and think it can be
used as a tool for a little Bible Study.

I visited the link you gave and the websites are beautifully done and
interesting - just overkill for me.

Thanks again,

Lorna

RE: [LegacyUG] Portable genealogy

2008-08-14 Thread Cary
I use an ASUS My PAL with Pocket Genealogist. It was seamless with Legacy
6, and still works perfectly with Legacy 7 (although I had to get the V7
version of Pocket Genealogist).

I'm thinking any Windows Mobile handheld would do, but I really like the
ASUS because I also use the GPS it has on the same trips. It guides me to
the cemetery and helps me sort through whose there all in one device
(although not at the same time).

I am new to Legacy had used FTM for over 10 years. Most Royalty in Europe
have their family trees back to the Bible. If you can line your family
history to connect to one of them there are books on their family History.
Our line goes back to King Arthur the Great in three different lines. His
family history is recorded in Family books so my mother now has our line
back to Adam & Eve taking the Bible after the King's family History we are
from the tribe of Judah.

Re: [LegacyUG] Run-time error 3167

2008-08-14 Thread John Magyari

Syble,

The next time the error occurs (hopefully you woun't see it again)
knowing exactly the steps occur before the problem happens will allow
others to try to reproduce what you are seeing.

For example in another thread it is reported that
if one
1) If You Click on "Add or Edit Source Cititations" Icon (appears as a
book icon) in the Individual Information window

2) Click on "Add A New Source" icon
3) Click on "Cancel"
4) Click on "Cite a Master Source" icon
you will get "Run-time error 3167" Record is deleted and the application
will disappear.
I can reproduce the above 4 steps and it always results in the same
message and aborted application.
If this is what causing your problem you'll have to wait for another
release because it's a bug.

But if you are doing something else, understanding exactly what you are
doing preceeding the event can provide information to tohers to help to
point you in the right direction. The sooner others can reproduce what
you are seeing, the sooner it possibly get fixed. Knowing the
preceeding steps is very very helpful.

This happens when you first start Legacy?

If not when does it occur, what are the 2 previous things you do right

Lorna,

Sorry -- I did misunderstand. Here's the page I got when I googled
genealogy "Jesus to Adam" which includes an add for a wallposter -- I
don't know how it reconciles the two contradictory genealogies or
whether it includes pobs and dates, all of which would have to be
guesstimates I imagine.

Dear Pat,

Thank you for taking the time to reply to my question. I'm afraid the
question wasn't clear - I'm not trying to trace my family tree back to Adam

begats and begets.

256;512;1024;2048 -- 1700AD (4)
4096;8192;16384 -- 1600AD (3)
32,678; 65,346; 130,000;260,000 -- 1500 AD(4)
512,000; 1,100,000; 2,200,000; -- 1400 AD(3)
4,400,000;8,800,000; 17,600,000;33,200,000 -- 1300 AD(4)
66million, 132m, 264m -1200 AD(3)
512m, 1billion, 2 billion, 4 billion --1100 AD(4)
8 billion, 16 billion, 32 billion -- 1000 AD (3)
64 billion, 128 b, 256b, 512b- 900 AD(4)
1024 billion, 2048 billion, 4096 billion (3) (or am I up to the
trillions?? by now -- i.e. 800 A.D.

I'm not sure who King Arthur the Great is, but I thought I might be the
only one who traced back through Scotland and Ireland and on into Israel
where I found I'm from two Israeli lines Levi and Judah
Also, I found possibilities for connections to all three of Noah's
sons. I tend to think that it may have been Japheth's descendants in
Britain whom the Romans conquered in Britain.

When I had a working Pocket PC I used Pocket Genealogist and loved it. I put my
Pocket PC in my fanny pack, took the Metro from my daughter's house in
Arlington to the National Archive and had everything in my hand. AFAIK, Pocket
Genealogist has the ability to accept new data from the user, GedStar only
displays the data already available.

Pocket PC advanced costs $35 (definitely worth it); GedStar Pro costs $24.95. I
would get the advanced versions as the features are worth the money. Both
import data directly from Legacy. For more information, check the product
websites -

Pocket PC http://www.northernhillssoftware.com/index.htm has a chart showing
which versions work with which devices.

GedStar http://www.ghcssoftware.com/index.htm lists devices which work

BTW both require an extra cost addon to import from from FTW. Yay Legacy:)

Good Luck!

256;512;1024;2048 -- 1700AD (4)

512,000; 1,100,000; 2,200,000; -- 1400 AD(3)
4,400,000;8,800,000; 17,600,000;33,200,000 -- 1300 AD(4)
66million, 132m, 264m -1200 AD(3)
512m, 1billion, 2 billion, 4 billion --1100 AD(4)
8 billion, 16 billion, 32 billion -- 1000 AD (3)
64 billion, 128 b, 256b, 512b- 900 AD(4)
1024 billion, 2048 billion, 4096 billion (3) (or am I up to the

82,000 B; 164,000 B; 238,000b; 480,000 B (4) 700AD
Well a million Billion is surely at least a Trillion!!
So by Charlemagne's time we'd have billions of ancestors whereas there
were probably not more than a 100-200 million people in all of Europe in
his day. So we're probably all descended from Charlemagne, who traced
his ancestry to Adam!

RE: [LegacyUG] Has anybody tried to use Legacy to build an Adam and Eve family tree?

2008-08-14 Thread Sherry/Support
Actually, the original post was very much on topic. I had originally
corresponded with Lorna - she had asked if anyone had done this in Legacy
before with the obvious problem of no surnames or dates. Of course, I don't
know what most of you are doing in Legacy so her asking how this was handled by
other users is very appropriate.

Since the original question was related to using Legacy, I had no problem with
it, although not only have some gone off-topic with their responses but many
have neglected to trim posts and use plain text instead of HTML, two breeches
of the guidelines.

I have switched to plain text and trimmed up much of the thread.

Thanks for using Legacy.

Pat,

The two genealogies of Jesus are not contradictory. One is from Matthew
and one from Luke. One is his genealogy on through Mary and one is the
genealogy through Joseph.

I also believe it possible to trace back to Adam. However, there is
only one of his many sons that have a genealogy recorded in the bible.

I too have been looking into doing this with the HP iPaq 110--same as the 111.
All the research that I have done leads me
to believe that with this windows based handheld, we would be able to enter
data into the handheld then sync it with our

I use Pocket Genealogist with a Dell Axim and find it incredibly convenient.
Yes, you can sync the portable data back to the desktop data, but that makes me
a little nervous. I like to review what I entered when researching before I
actually change my database. That's why I like the "field notes" in Pocket
Genealogist. I can print out the notes I took and then decide whether my
analysis was correct before entering it into my desktop.

are descended from Charlemagne since we have about the following number
of ancestors at 3 1/2 generations per century (assuming no overlaps, an
obvious impossibility)

2;4;8;16 -- 1900AD(at 4 gens)
32;64;128 -- 1800AD(at 3 gens)
256;512;1024;2048 -- 1700AD (4)
4096;8192;16384 -- 1600AD (3)
32,678; 65,346; 130,000;260,000 -- 1500 AD(4)
512,000; 1,100,000; 2,200,000; -- 1400 AD(3)
4,400,000;8,800,000; 17,600,000;33,200,000 -- 1300 AD(4)
66million, 132m, 264m -1200 AD(3)
512m, 1billion, 2 billion, 4 billion --1100 AD(4)
8 billion, 16 billion, 32 billion -- 1000 AD (3)
64 billion, 128 b, 256b, 512b- 900 AD(4)
1024 billion, 2048 billion, 4096 billion (3) (or am I up to the
trillions?? by now -- i.e. 800 A.D.

Dear Users,

I started building an Adam and Eve family tree in Legacy and ran into
an obvious problem: How can I enter dates of births and deaths? I know
I will have to leave out surnames and wives almost all the time, but
that shouldn't really matter as long as I can get a timeline.

I would really appreciate any suggestions.

Sincerely,

[LegacyUG] Vista and V 7 and new computer - any helpful comments please ?

2008-08-14 Thread Valerie Garton
I am about to buy a light weight laptop - any suggestions

I have been trying to avoid Vista BUT I am wondering whether I should not
bite the bullet and get it now as it is probably inevitable that I am going
to have to do that in a year or two anyway.

1. Do you think that all the bugs have been sorted out in Vista ?

2. How is V7 performing with Vista

3. Are there any special tasks required when installing V7 with Vista.

4. I would be pleased to receive any helpful comments

RE: [LegacyUG] Portable genealogy

2008-08-14 Thread KevinRPhillips
Michelle and Carol,

Here’s a list of devices that support Windows Mobile. (Click on any model #
for more details on that model) The iPAQ 111 is a Windows Mobile device.

http://www.northernhillssoftware.com/EN/Download/downbydevice.htm

It's a long list and not the best way to "shop" for a device, but you can
verify or compare models this way.

Pocket Genealogist "Advanced" does allow you to "directly" import your
Legacy database to the device, make changes on the device, then update those
changes back into you Legacy database.

Here's the User Guide (about 200 pages) if you want to see a lot more screen
shots.

I too have been looking into doing this with the HP iPaq 110--same as the
111.  All the research that I have done leads me
to believe that with this windows based handheld, we would be able to enter
data into the handheld then sync it with our
program on our main computer.  Legacy is the only program that has this
ability.

I'm so glad you asked this, I've been thinking of buying the Pocket
Genealogist from Legacy, too, and put my genealogy on something small that I

can take to libraries, etc.  I've come across a couple of libraries that
frown on laptops & notebooks...just loose blank paper, pencil & handhelds
can be brought in.

I'm thinking of getting the HP IPAQ 111 to put it on... anyone have
experience with using that program with that handheld?

Thank you,

RE: [LegacyUG] Vista and V 7 and new computer - any helpful comments please ?

2008-08-14 Thread Kate Redford
I have a note book with Vista for 9 months and a desktop with Vista for 3
months. Legacy 7 works very well in my desktop. I haven't installed Legacy
7 on my notebook yet. I use both IE 7 and Firefox with my Vista and Legacy
7. I wouldn't go back for anything. I am on the computer 4-5 hrs per day
working in Legacy and no problems except when I misstep as an operator. The
mapping, the digital pictures, the digital documents, the add in of Word
documents, all work well.

For installation, I recommend you follow exactly like the developers had
posted to our LUG group. I downloaded the files; upgraded to Deluxe; did
not try to outsmart the default instructions. I did not try to save Legacy
vs 6. Not only did it work, but I converted my old (minor) family data
basis of about (6) files; moved my backups for 1 1/2 years to the backup
file and no problems.

Good Luck.

I purchased a Dell Inspiron 1525, Intel Core 2 Duo with Windows Vista last
week. Installed Legacy V7.0.0.55 as soon as I got it, and have had
absolutely no problems with it yet.

I haven't had a chance to do all that much, granted, but so far, what I have
done, has gone off without a hitch.

Vista takes a bit of getting used to, but so far I'm loving everything about
it, especially where Legacy is concerned.

A case can be made that the conflicting genealogies of Jesus are on topic if

Sherry, I know the original post was on topic. However, whether someone's
ancestry connects to European royalty, and whether there is a conflict in
the genealogy of Jesus does not seem to be a valid topic for the Legacy User

RE: [LegacyUG] Vista and V 7 and new computer - any helpful comments please ?

2008-08-14 Thread ronald ferguson

Valerie,

Like you, recently I have had to make the same decision. I first had a look at
what I really needed which was to run OpenOffice.org databases in which I store
details from parish registers and a light copy of my genealogy files for
reference only. Speed was not terribly important but I needed a reasonable long
battery life and I would encourage you to look at this aspect. The operating
system was not a high priority.

Whilst I can run OOo on Linux, for various reasons I decided not to go this
route which left XP and Vista (or a Mac). Because my needs were fairly straight
forward I opted for Vista Home Basic as I did not need the bells and whistles
of the Home Premium and have not regretted this. So far it has been completely
problem free.

I cannot comment on the use of Legacy V7 with Vista as I opted for another
program with a much lower memory overhead, copying my DB across using a Gedcom.
Legacy will, of course, continue to be my program for doing all the work on the
DB using my PC, and I will not be updating my DB on the laptop.
