My bad. I misread the question to being about avoiding multiple inputting of

Richard, you made this reply to a post of mine, but I'm afraid I can't

I never mentioned anything being redundant. When you refer to "4
characters" I presume you mean the year. The OP asked if he should use
"1951" as in the Census title or use "2005" from the Ancestry "blurb."
I replied that I would not use 1951 but would use 2005 and gave my
reasons, which had nothing to do with anything being redundant.

As far as I am aware, no one has made any reference in this thread to
saving disk space. The question is about the "correct" or most-favoured
way to cite a particular source.

RE: [LegacyUG] Compare Two Files for Differences

2008-09-30 Thread ronald ferguson

Dave,

This would, I think, rather depend on what your reason is, or exactly what you
mean by keeping them in sinc. My brother in law work and I together but he
works on his family tree and I work on mine bringing them together only for our
website. In actual fact they are never together as one Legacy file, but there
is no reason why they shouldn't be, all I would have to do is delete the common
individuals from his file and link it to mine. In this situation I see no need
for a common "sameness". I know of no program which can compare two Access
files in this way.

However, from what you say it would seem that you wish to have two identical
files. I would suggest that the first thing you would need to do would be to
create an agreed common file. This could be stored on any one of the sites
which offer back-up storage and then updated by each of you as required.

One possibility for comparison which you may like to consider is to create
Pedigree webpages for all the contents of both your files and then use CSdiff
or Winmerge to compare the two html files. This will not show differences in
wording but should show differences in facts.

2008-09-30 Thread Kathy Shiell-Stokes

Dave:
Use the intellimerge feature...after you have decided which of you
will be the"keeper of the file.If were to be you, you would need to
keep a "master" file that you merged your changes to prior to
emailing it to your brother for him to work on. Periodically, he
would email the file back to you so that you could intellimerge it
into the original file.Naturally, your brother would need to
intellimerge the files he receives from you with his own file so that
what you receive from him contains his changes. As "keeper of the
file" I would keep two copies of the database...one as a master and
one as a working file. Make any changes to the working file and then
periodically(ie prior to emailing it out to your
brother...intellimerge the working file into your master copy..only
the changed records will be merged. How often this happens can depend
on how quickly the information gets out of synch but likely once a
month would be goodjust prior to doing your monthly backup. At
10:35 AM 9/30/2008, you wrote:

David,

The published date field for an online source is reserved for the year when
the document/database was initially published if you can locate that
information. For Ancestry.com databases, it is always available in their
citation.

Hi everyone,

Just interested to see what people do here. What information would people
put in the 'published date' section of the sourcewriter template if the
information is found online at ancestry.com?

1851? It is the 1851 census of England, so is there any point in putting it
twice?

2005?

Or would folk copy the whole sentence?

"1851 England Census [database on-line]. Provo, UT, USA: The Generations
Network, Inc., 2005. Original data: Census Returns of England and Wales,
1851. Kew, Surrey, England: The National Archives of the UK (TNA): Public

England."

Re: [LegacyUG] Census Information: How to record 'published date' in the the Master Source definition of Sourcewriter.

2008-09-30 Thread John Clare
The original source is National Archives HO107 (HO stands for Home Office)
and the class is England and Wales Census for 1851 (not just England). There
are many organisations who have transcribed the images, but the original
image production was done by the National Archives in the days when it was
the PRO or Public Record Office. The National Archives is at Kew (which is
now a suburb of London) so I use "Census of England and Wales 1851, National
Archive, Kew, Richmond, Surrey (Class HO107)" and then the publisher, which
in my case is TheGenealogist.com

As you will see elsewhere in this thread, I do! (For the reasons I have
given.)

Ancestry is the repository and not the source.

I agree with you, but Ancestry is "publishing" the Census and "handy
hint" for that field reads "Type the date posted, updated or
copyrighted" so it seems to make sense to put that 2005 date in there.
Well, it does to me, anyway! Although I don't always bother to fill
that field (or the equivalent) in Master Sources and I think it probably
doesn't matter terribly much, in most (all?) cases if one chooses to
ignore it.

No!

2005?

Well, that's what I put.

Or would folk copy the whole sentence?

"1851 England Census [database on-line]. Provo, UT, USA: The
Generations Network, Inc., 2005. Original data: Census Returns of
England and Wales, 1851. Kew, Surrey, England: The National Archives of
the UK (TNA): Public Record Office (PRO), 1851. Data imaged from the
National Archives, London, England."

It has been dropped from the SourceWriter tab, but on the Text tab of
the Basic Style Master source was the helpful suggestion "(copy of
description contained within the source)" and that is exactly what I put
on the Text tab of Master Sources. So for the 1851 Census I enter that
sentence you have quoted above.

Sometimes it is useful even to me to have this explanatory text for a
rather obscure website; in the case of Ancestry probably nearly everyone
knows what it is, but for the benefit of those who don't there is the
option to include this text the first time the Master Source is cited in
a Report.

If you stop and think about it, the program must "handle" an individual before it can determine
whether that individual is to be included under the parameters you specified. If it determines that
the individual does not meet the criteria you specified, it does not create a web page for that
individual, BUT it still "handled" him/her.

I also get a similar discrepancy, but I believe that you can account for
this totally with the number of AKA's and married surnames

As others have said, the actual number of pages created is correct

David,

There is no way I would put in all that stuff from Ancestry!!

I have actually put in "1851" - I must been rather keen that day as I have put
the actual date of the census in the recorded date. The "1851" to which you
refer actually only appears in the Bibliography and I agree it is a bit of a
waste of time - so no problem in leaving it out.

Ancestry is the repository and not the source.

Mary,

Are you having a bad hair day ? :-)

Search>Find>Detailed Search

Individual; Private; Equals; Private.

I am not certain as to whether, in V6, the total number of persons found is
given in the list of people found (it's in the description bar in V7).

The total number of individuals given in the Surnames list excludes "Private",
and of course, the total number of individuals in your .fdb file is in Gen.
Info.

Have a good day!

RE: [LegacyUG] Web Pages - number of Individuals

2008-09-30 Thread ronald ferguson

I am just updating my site and did not notice this difference. However, I have
checked the total number of pages produced against the total numbers of records
in my .fdb file and these are in agreement.

It would seem, therefore, that although the figures may be wrong during the
creation of the pages, the correct number of pages are created.

I tested this with the sample file and without tagging "include
invisible ..." I got 145 individuals (from 158) and after tagging this
option I had 158 individuals in the Surname index. The strange thing
is that there are no invisible individuals in the sample file (there
are 13 private individuals in the file and that is exactly the
difference between 158 and 145).
I couldn't find this in the Bugtracking system but could see that the
programmers are working on a Privacy Tab for Web pages.
I didn't have "Suppress details for living people" on the Other tab
tagged. It seems that untagging the "include invisible..." has an
effect on the "suppress details for living people".
I'll send this in CC to bugs, but I suppose this will be fixed when
