RE: [LegacyUG] Charting / Reports 1/2 children

2008-10-16 Thread ronald ferguson

Mark,

You do not say which (or what sort of) chart, so I cannot test this for you,
but have you tried linking and setting the relationship to "step child" - which
after all would be accurate. I am not sure if this option is there by default
but if not you can just add it.

I think it is just the need to link to the step father which is important.

My uncle and his wife had 1 child from their marriage.

Before they were married each had been married and had one child.

I have set the family view to show 1/2 children so when I look at my uncles
family card it shows him and his wife and three children - their son, his son
from his previous marriage and his wife's son from her previous marriage.

However whenever I try to chart this it will only ever show two children, and
not the son of the his wife.

If I show the wife's son as being adopted by my uncle then he will show in the
reports such as descendants but it does not show his real father, just my uncle.

Also, on the family view their is then 4 children showing, including the now
adopted son who is shown twice as both adopted and as a 1.2 child.

I hope you can understand what I am trying to show here.

Is there any report or chart that will simply show the true relationships of my
uncle and aunt, and their three children. They were always treated as simply
one family.

thanks for any help

Re: [LegacyUG] Protocall in Divorce

2008-10-16 Thread Jerry
On a related issue, my family researches at Kew TNA,
UK have thrown up so far unrelated people with my
rather uncommon surname. I include them in my Legacy
database with the hope that some day I will discover
their connections. On the same principle, I believe
you should keep data on divorced connections.

[LegacyUG] New member

2008-10-16 Thread Ron Brown
I am a new member here.

Is there a way to set relationships to "self" and it will calculate all
blood relations. Every time I add a new relation I have to go through the
set relationship again.

Thanks

RE: [LegacyUG] Charting / Reports 1/2 children

2008-10-16 Thread Mark K
I checked also and it works fine.

However, in the report while it shows a different surname there is no indicator
for the child status. ie it does not say that the person is adopted or a step
child, they have the same status the biological children.

Re which report - I don't care what report it is, simply one that will show all
the children of both people, not just the one focus person.
Ideally what I am after is a report that states the biological children of the
couple, and then also the children of their other marriages. A sort of two
sided descendant report.

In a normal descendant report it shows the other spouses of the focus person,
and any children. I would like the report to show the other spouses of the
spouse and their children also.

In this case it is two of my uncles, and all my life the children that I grew
up with were one family unit and that is what I would like to see.

I hope this makes some sense.

If there isn't any such report, I can wp it, I wont have any choice :)

RE: [LegacyUG] File Types

2008-10-16 Thread leo macdonald

Sherry, thanks for the reply, but your answer does not tell me much more than I
knew before.
when I exit for the day I do not click File>Backup Family File. I do click
File> Exit>the backup screen appears and this is where I enter a name for the
backup files for data and mutimeda, then save.
An example of what was produced last evening when I did my backup is as follows:

(A) Data File
Type: Compressed (Zipped) Folder
Date Modified: 19/15/2008 11:47 PM
Size: 45.0 MB

(B) Multimedia File
Type: Compressed (Zipped) Folder
Date Modified: 19/15/2008 11:51 PM
Size: 530 MB

(C) File
XXX.Rel
Type: REL File
Date Modified: 19/15/2008 11:37 PM
Size: 49.1 MB

The A and B files listed above I copy from me C Drive to my internal F Drive,
then to my two external drives and I burn them to a CD.

Question: Should I be copying the C File to these other drives as well?

Question: What kind of information in included in the C File, is it the same
information as what was included in the A file?

Question: Why is there a difference between the size of the C File as compared
to the A and B Files?

I normally keep my saved files (A & B) stored in their respective places for at
least a couple of months before deleting them off my C Drive, 3-4 months before
deleting from my F Drive and several months before deleting the external
drives, the CD's I keep.

Question: The C Files, I have not been deleting and they are taking up a lot of
space on my C Drive, can I safely delete these C Files without doing any harm
to my Legacy database or my Legacy program as I do not know what information is
included in these C Files?

RE: [LegacyUG] Charting / Reports 1/2 children

2008-10-16 Thread ronald ferguson

Mark,

If the only addition you require is the inclusion of the Child Status then the
Descendant Book Report may be what you are looking for -given that the child is
linked to your uncle as either step or adopted. This can be included using
Report Options>Include.

[LegacyUG] Charting

2008-10-16 Thread Martin Briscoe
I have thought several times it would be useful if you do something like
right-click on a person in the chart and then select to remove or hide them.

If someone has two spouses then I will often attach the children to the
second spouse as stepdaughter and stepson. This means that they appear
twice on the chart.

Also if there some children in a household as grandchildren, nephew, niece
or not indicated then I will again sometimes attach these as grandchildren,
nephew, niece or unknown until I know who their parents are. Again these
will appear on the chart which can confuse someone if I send them a copy
because there is nothing to show the relationship displayed on the chart.
It might not be "correct" but helps identify them later when I find some
more information.

Re: [LegacyUG] New member

2008-10-16 Thread Brian/Support

Ron,

In Legacy 7.0 we do not automatically calculate relationships for new
people. The new relationship calculator in Legacy 7.0 will calculate
both blood and non-blood relationships. In large files that can take a
long time. If we were to recalculate the relationships every time you
add someone the delay would be unacceptable.

That name in brackets in the Title Bar is the name for your currently

If we all get together at christmas or for a bbq etc there will frequently be

Re: [LegacyUG] Help.

2008-10-16 Thread Tim Rosenlof
A tad bit off the topic of the OP, and take no offense. This another example
of where and how to keep your data. I know this subject comes up quite a
bit. In your case, if your computer had a disaster and you had no current
backup, on that computer you had the problem with, you have a problem of
loosing your data. I would suggest that folks periodically backup and keep
thier data away from that computer, via CD, Offsite, everyone has thier own
thoughts on this. If you keep your backup on your computer, what if your
hard drive fails, fire, theft, you are empty. Keeping your backups are great
on the computer. I am just recommending offline backups from time to time.
I burn a CD, Send it to my gmail account and use mozy (as slow as it is for
me). Some folks keep it on a portable drive (which mine failed),. Same
problem.
As for this person, treat it as a new format and start all over with your
different lists, emails, etc...

You can get Legacy program back at thier website
To get back on the list, http://www.legacyfamilytree.com/LegacyLists.
As for Legacy, support you can get that off www.legacyfamilytree.com, yet I
see how they could help you in this matter.

I wish you the best in you efforts to recover as much as you can.

Tim
Waiting for a long discussion.

RE: [LegacyUG] Charting / Reports 1/2 children

2008-10-16 Thread ronald ferguson

Mark,

I'm afraid that you are asking for too much! The fact is that the step/adopted
children are not related to your family by blood, although because Legacy is a
"Family" program it does allow a limited recognition of these children.

I think to get the condensed chart which you require you will have to add the
children in a WP, although the Descendant Chart does not allow saving in the
rtf format which is a bit of a bind.

You are right the report will show the relationships but unfortunately
it is also very verbose.

I may end up word processing the report I want myself.

The problem I have is that all these programs are focused on the line of
an individual, whereas I want the details for a couple. This is not
meant as a criticism of reunion.

If all the linkages are in place, the Family Group Sheet might provide

RE: [LegacyUG] File Types

2008-10-16 Thread Sherry/Support
Leo,

When you backup, you will see a window that shows:

Which files do you want to backup?
Data Files
Legacy family file (data)
Research Guidance results file
Relationships
IGI search results file
Clipboard files (to-do, sources, etc)
Focus Group settings file

You select your choices and the name & location that you want to use (next
build will default to the file name of the file you're backing up) and then
click on the Backup button - that will save all the necessary files as a
.zip file. That's all you need to do.

There is no option to backup the .REL file separately (that's related to the
relationship calculations) - it's saved as part of the .zip file. You must
have copied that over yourself.

Just follow the steps in the backup window and if you need further help,
click on the context-sensitive Help button.

Thanks for using Legacy.

Sherry, thanks for the reply, but your answer does not tell me much more
than I knew before.
when I exit for the day I do not click File>Backup Family File. I do click
File> Exit>the backup screen appears and this is where I enter a name for
the backup files for data and mutimeda, then save.
An example of what was produced last evening when I did my backup is as
follows:

(A) Data File
Type: Compressed (Zipped) Folder
Date Modified: 19/15/2008 11:47 PM
Size: 45.0 MB

(B) Multimedia File
Type: Compressed (Zipped) Folder
Date Modified: 19/15/2008 11:51 PM
Size: 530 MB

(C) File
XXX.Rel
Type: REL File
Date Modified: 19/15/2008 11:37 PM
Size: 49.1 MB

The A and B files listed above I copy from me C Drive to my internal F
Drive, then to my two external drives and I burn them to a CD.

Question: Should I be copying the C File to these other drives as well?

Question: What kind of information in included in the C File, is it the same
information as what was included in the A file?

Question: Why is there a difference between the size of the C File as
compared to the A and B Files?

I normally keep my saved files (A & B) stored in their respective places for
at least a couple of months before deleting them off my C Drive, 3-4 months
before deleting from my F Drive and several months before deleting the
external drives, the CD's I keep.

Question: The C Files, I have not been deleting and they are taking up a lot
of space on my C Drive, can I safely delete these C Files without doing any
harm to my Legacy database or my Legacy program as I do not know what
information is included in these C Files?

Re: [LegacyUG] Data Recovery - was Help.

This is getting off-topic for a Legacy discussion, so I will not respond
to this thread on the mailing list. If you have questions, please email
me directly:
ads [at] wizardanswers [dot] com

Most of the content of a hard drive can be recovered if you have access to
a PC with some recovery software. The commercial recovery services are
cost-prohibitive for most of us (OnTrack wants about $1800US for a 40GB
drive, plus the cost of CD/DVD media), but there is software available
that can recover from all but physical damage to the disk. One commercial
program is "Stellar Phoenix" which starts about $300US (there are other
commercial programs and some shareware/freeware as well). I used Stellar
Phoenix several years ago when doing laptop maintenance/recovery for a
consulting company. When I left the company, they weren't interested in
making the effort to have the software license transferred to one of their
computers, so I fell heir to an occasionally very useful tool.

Re: [LegacyUG] Importing Picture Negatives into Legacy 7

2008-10-16 Thread John Carter
Be aware that most flat-bed scanners have much less resolution than a
dedicated negative scanner and your positive image will be relatively
small. Flat-bed scanners typically have a resolution of 600, maybe 1200
dpi (*optical* resolution, not interpolated). Dedicated negative scanners
start at 1800 dpi and go up to 3600 dpi or higher.

If you have large negatives (2 1/4 inches square or the like) then a
flat-bed scanner at 600 dpi or higher may produce a usable positive image.

If the negatives are black and white, almost any of the free graphics
programs (IrfanView, for example) can do the negative to positive
conversion.

If the negatives are color, then the graphics program must be able to
subtract out the orange base color of the negative material to create a
proper positive image (probably starts with the lower end versions of
PhotoShop).

This is from experience - I have an 1800 dpi scanner for slides and 35mm
negatives and a 1200 dpi (optical resolution) flat-bed scanner for
documents and larger negatives.

There are some problems with Invisible so it does not remove them.

Stepchildren will appear under one spouse, I just want to remove from the
remarriage. If Invisible did work then they would disappear from both.

I want something I can that I use when preparing the Chart, I could always
remove the links to the person then replace afterwards but makes a lot more
work.

Martin,

It is true that they would disappear completely, but my impression was that in
your case this would not be important for the type of report you required.

In which reports is Invisible not working? I am aware that it does not function
for web pages, or at least Pedigree ones, but my impression is that the
problems with reports have been fixed.

I assume this writer has a very old flat-bed scanner. Mine is fairly old
(5 years) and works up to 3200 dpi and handles negatives as well. Color
slides scanned at 1200 dpi are plenty big enough. Small negatives are
the same size. I've rarely used anything except Adobe Elements in
conjunction with this scanner and turning negatives, B&W or color, has
worked fine.

negatives and a 1200 dpi (optical resolution) flat-bed scanner for
documents and larger negatives.

I have some really old negatives that I wish to convert to a picture
positive image and import into Legacy 7.
Do any of you folks know of a good graphics program I can use to convert
picture negatives (using my scanner) to positive picture images?

RE: [LegacyUG] File Types

2008-10-16 Thread leo macdonald

Thanks Sherry, I checked and I had all of the boxes selected that you mentioned
below, I'm not sure if I selected them or they were selected when I upgraded. I
will now delete the backedup files that I mentioned before. My problem is now
solved.

RE: [LegacyUG] Charting

2008-10-16 Thread Martin Briscoe
I know it can be done that way but I was just saying that it would be a lot
easier if you select on the chart which you do want displayed with a
right-click. At times you might want to removed some children who died as
infants so that the chart will fit on a page easier. It will very
cumbersome if every time you have to exit the chart, copy the file, delete
some people, reopen the chart and try again.

RE: [LegacyUG] Charting

2008-10-16 Thread Martin Briscoe
Apologies, they do disappear from the chart if the privacy option is set on
the chart. But it still would not help lose a stepchild from their
stepparents line but not their natural parents line.

Invisible does not work when exporting to a GEDCOM so I tend to be
suspicious of it.

As has been mentioned, download Irfanview (totally free) and open the image in it. On the toolbar
select Image > negative and save the new image. Done. Easy. Free.

2008-10-16 Thread Pat
The Infanview program looks very good . I will also try out the
Studio-Line program to see which of these programs works best with my
printer/scanner (and provides the best picture).

Thank you both for the prompt, very helpful suggestions.
