RE: [LegacyUG] Margaret Married Someone

2008-12-03 Thread Kirsten Bowman
Wendy:

True, it's a very easy item to correct--when you're aware of it. My core
concern was that the term "someone" is automatically generated by the
software (apparently in more than just this one situation) and isn't
overwritten when the corresponding field is filled in but is only combined
with the new field contents. It seems this is something that should be
corrected in programming. It's really a very small problem (unless you're
printing a large book as Ruth did), but when we find these little buglets I
think it's worth confirming them with other users and then reporting them so
that Legacy operates as smoothly as possible.

Hi Kirsten,

You may find satisfaction by entering the spouse before the marriage
information. When you add a spouse to a person in your database, you
will be prompted to enter the marriage data when you save the spouse, so
you won't forget to do that step. This will prevent your problem of
"someone" showing in your reports.

Hope this helps. :-)

[LegacyUG] Endnote problem

2008-12-03 Thread seaic2008-gen
I have upgraded to the latest build. Still having problems with RTF reports.
This happens with Ancestor and Descendant reports and Ancestor and Descendant
book reports through the publishing center.

Trying to get endnotes to print after each generation rather than at the end.
No matter whether I customize the RTF Citation Style to link or unlink I get an
error message. If I check link I get the following message alert: Endnotes
after each generation is not available when using linked RTF source citations.
Only footnotes on each page and endnotes at end of the report are available.
Do you want to continue (using endnotes at end of the book) Yes or No.If I
check unlink in customize the RTF Citation Style I get the same message but
telling me endnotes after each generation is not available when using unlinked
RTF source citations.

Any suggestions?

Marie

Try this:
(1) Enter a new daughter (Jane) for a couple (just the name is enough).
(2) On that daughter's Marriage Screen, enter a date and location.
If you then preview a descendant report for Jane's father, it will show for
his child, "Jane married someone" and the date (which is what I would
expect).

(3) Add a husband John Jones for Jane. (Yes, the husband is a new person.)
Preview the descendant report for her father again and it will show "Jane
married someone John Jones" and the date.

I haven't changed any defaults, and the "someone" is added
automatically; I
didn't enter that.

I can reproduce this over and over, so it's pretty clearly a
glitch--although a very small one. If the software is going to add
"someone" when the name is left blank, it should overwrite that word
when a
name is added.

Kirsten,

I have tied to reproduce this, albeit a day late, but cannot. I have tried
various ways - including some which crashed Legacy.

I leave unknowns as blank, so maybe this was why I haven't spotted it, but
changing to the "Unknown" default made no difference. One question
though -
you say that the husband's name appears as "Someone Joe Blogs",
if it
actually uses "someone" then how are you putting that in, when the
default
is unknown?

The new husband is overwriting the "Unknown" btw. I also take it that
to
enter the husband's details you are using the "enter new person"
option.

Elizabeth,
As I usually select "Pack information on one line" for Descendant Charts, I
have not encountered this problem. I unchecked that box and still didn't
see the gap. Then I noticed that you had marriage info displayed and I
didn't. When I included marriage, the gap showed up. It looks like a
buglet. The program has left a space for marriage info between the
husband's b. and d. info. Don't think you can delete it on screen. If you
are going to print it as a text or HTML doc, you would have to edit out the
gaps.

Agreed.

Agreed.

My only complaint is that Windows Mail does not offer the preference to
configure individual contact addresses to be plain text for outgoing
e-mails (i.e., for mail list addresses). Fortunately, it does support
automatic plain text replies to original plain text e-mails.

Then use something that does provide that flexibility! Thunderbird for

Re: [LegacyUG] Place names not as entered

2008-12-03 Thread Steve Voght
Even without the Geo-location database, you should be able to revise
short location names by highlighting the offending entry in the Master
Location List and selecting the 'Edit...' button at the bottom. After
revising it and selecting 'Save' you'll get a warning that all entries
using the location will be affected; simply select 'OK' and you're
set!

It is as you said but you gave us the wrong name of the report. It's
Descendant Book report.
What would you like me to do with these spurious people I just added?
They're yours for the asking.

I haven't changed any defaults, and the "someone" is added automatically; I
didn't enter that.

I can reproduce this over and over, so it's pretty clearly a
glitch--although a very small one. If the software is going to add
"someone" when the name is left blank, it should overwrite that word when a
name is added.

Kirsten,

I have tied to reproduce this, albeit a day late, but cannot. I have tried
various ways - including some which crashed Legacy.

I leave unknowns as blank, so maybe this was why I haven't spotted it, but
changing to the "Unknown" default made no difference. One question though -
you say that the husband's name appears as "Someone Joe Blogs", if it
actually uses "someone" then how are you putting that in, when the default
is unknown?

The new husband is overwriting the "Unknown" btw. I also take it that to
enter the husband's details you are using the "enter new person" option.

The reports might be using the short name, while the individual
display typically uses the full name. There are also some location
settings in the Options > Customize >Data Format page (under Letter
Case of Locations) -- check those settings to "don't change what I
enter" and see if that makes a difference.

Although I have entered a death as taking place in Pas-de-Calais, France,
Legacy insists on displaying it as Pas-DE-Calais. The individual (editing)

uppercase.

Re: [LegacyUG] Security Question

2008-12-03 Thread Steve Voght
More than likely you saw the firewall message after updating because
most firewalls are also designed to detect changes in programs sending
internet requests and flag them (since the change could potentially be
malicious spyware or a virus that modified the program.) Thus, you
might not even remember a firewal request way back when you installed
7.0.0.55, and it's been following whatever policy you set ever since.
Finally thanks to the big update to 76, the firewall setting was
reset, much to your surprise! Version 55 definitely also connects to
the internet to update the Home tab and check for updates, if
permitted by local firewall settings.

You probably see a similar firewall request whenever IE or Firefox
downloads an update, but don't think twice about it because you expect
them to be connecting to the internet :)

That's not to say there aren't legitimate questions about what data is
being sent out from the program, of course; privacy and security are
always important!

[LegacyUG] Security Question

2008-12-03 Thread Mark Wilson
Hi Tim,

I use ZoneAlarm Internet Security Suite v8.0.059.000 on WinXP32-SP3. My
concern was whether or not Legacy was trying to send more than just page
requests. Some programs are intentionally written to "call home" for
various verifications, for error reports, to establish legitimacy, or to
share usage data. I had just installed Legacy v7.0.0.76 and when it
restarted, ZoneAlarm notified me that "Legacy Genealogy Software is
sending my 'home address' information to www.legacyfamilytree.com." I
hadn't even clicked on anything for Legacy yet to send a page request.
Since that was the first time that ZoneAlarm had given that particular
alert., it raised the question as to what was going on with Legacy.

Since computer security is imperative, I didn't want to ignore the
issue. It's always better to be proactive rather than to look back and
ask "Why didn't I"

Thanks, Tim!

RE: [LegacyUG] Listserv spam/HTML issues (Was: Legacy Question)

2008-12-03 Thread John B. Lisle

Hi,

It is correct that they use Mailman; however, it has been modified
either by RootsWeb programmers or the company to support several of
RootsWeb's specific requirements.

And, yes, RootsWeb does not permit use of many of Mailman's features
as they are considered not compatible with RootsWeb's requirements.

Legacy is a much smaller company than RootsWeb/Ancestry. I hope that
Legacy staff does not spend a lot of extra ergs of energy to build
and maintain an email system.

I am sure they are dealing with this somehow.

Kirsten,

I have tied to reproduce this, albeit a day late, but cannot. I have tried
various ways - including some which crashed Legacy.

I leave unknowns as blank, so maybe this was why I haven't spotted it, but

Although I have entered a death as taking place in Pas-de-Calais, France,
Legacy insists on displaying it as Pas-DE-Calais. The individual
(editing) screen shows the lowercase 'de' but the family view and
descendant chart use uppercase.

I think this looks odd - any ideas as to how I can change it please?

Re: [LegacyUG] Place names not as entered

2008-12-03 Thread Steve Voght
Elizabeth,

Have you verified that this isn't a difference between the full and
short location names for this location in the Master Location list?
The reports might be using the short name, while the individual
display typically uses the full name. There are also some location
settings in the Options > Customize >Data Format page (under Letter
Case of Locations) -- check those settings to "don't change what I
enter" and see if that makes a difference.

Elizabeth,

I think you will find on going to View>Master Lists>Location that you have Pas
De Calais in the master list. If you also have Pas de Calais then combine the
former into the latter. If you only have Pas De Calais then use Edit to change.

My guess is that you have both.

I should have put the issue aside when tired and frustrated. I had problems

efficiently analyze what was going wrong. Will have a go at it today with a
clear mind. Thanks for your helpful feedback and hope you feel better soon.

My brain's a bit fuzzy at the moment (combination of heavy cold and cold

Working in the Source Detail screen, if you enter the Details on the first
tab, then click the Override tab there will be nothing entered in the boxes,
but if you click on "click here to go to the overrides tab" the boxes will
have the citations entered ready for you to edit.
If you copy a Source which has overrides to the Source Clipboard, then paste
it, it will paste with the overrides included and the checkbox ticked for
using that override. If you make changes to the Source Detail and then want
to incorporate these into an Override, you need to make your Detail changes,
then click "the output has been overridden by the user. Click here ..." and
then re-write your override sentence, not just change the bits you have
changed on the details screen.

I hope that makes sense!

After a quick test I realize you need to follow Sandra's advice about
unlinking the incorrect marriage before attempting this process, or
else your g-g-g-grandfather will also be tagged and deleted (that
tricky "tag everyone in the ancestor chart including spouses" thing!)

Once you have unlinked the false grandmother from your correct
ancestors, select her and then the steps provided above should work
properly. Teach me to provide instructions without first
double-checking it myself!

Before you delete any of the tagged individuals, check to see that only the
ones you want to delete are tagged. You can tag each individual on the
family screen by just clicking the tag box. In individual Edit, you have

[[I tried to email Ken yesterday but apparently his telephone is off the

Several other strange things about the "spam":

1) Up until one I received this morning, they all are associated with
[EMAIL PROTECTED] This seems odd to me.

2) The bounce emails have all had minimal headers. They only have 1
   "receive" header.

3) Yesterday I tried sending an email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] Later in
the day, I received what appeared to be 4 LUG bounce messages. But
these were different than the previous bounce messages. These had
several additional intermediate "receive" headers (from
centerbeam.com and messagelabs.com). I don't know if there is any
connection between my sending the email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] and
these 4 strange emails I received, but I checked the LUG archives and
don't see these 4 bounces anywhere. I assume they went to me but not
   to the LUG.

I also have been suspect of some kind of feedback loop. But I wonder if
[EMAIL PROTECTED] isn't somehow involved in this loop. Maybe some
sort of auto-forward? And does this account even belong to our Ken?

Re: [LegacyUG] Listserv spam/HTML issues (Was: Legacy Question)

2008-12-03 Thread Ward Walker
That's ridiculous. If I am sending e-mails to family and close friends, all
of whom have broadband, I should be able to take advantage of modern
formatting such as indenting, bolding, underlining, etc. Also, the word
wrapping and general appearance of original messages should look a lot
better than what we see below. Among other features. Why stay in the dark
ages?

I also like to receive e-mail newsletters that are highly formatted with
pictures and links, such as Legacy News. I don't mind the extra click to
enable the pictures if I trust the sender.

My only complaint is that Windows Mail does not offer the preference to
configure individual contact addresses to be plain text for outgoing e-mails
(i.e., for mail list addresses). Fortunately, it does support automatic
plain text replies to original plain text e-mails.

With all due respect to everyone who keeps arguing that HTML
messages
are the bane of the world and the cause of problems on this
list, the
two biggest issues with the spam flagging are undoubtedly
the
onslaught of repetitive error messages about not being
subscribed to
the list (spam heuristics look for frequent message
repetition as a
sign of spam), and the spamming issue last month when
someone hijacked
Geoff's Legacy email address and was using it to send
fake Rolex
messages to the list. As people kept tagging those
messages as spam,
filters were learning that messages originating from LUG
were likely
to be spam and thus the spam score goes up on all LUG
messages.

Whoever maintains this list needs to deal with the error
messages
because it is dramatically adding to the burden on end
users
downloading the messages, and it is also adding extra
messages as
people keep responding asking why they are receiving them
in the first
place and what they did wrong.

With regard to HTML messages, virtually every mailing list
management
program has an option to strip the HTML from messages
before passing
them on, and if a list actually wants to implement a
'no HTML' policy
then that is really the only way to do it properly.
Expecting end
users to maintain compliance is asking for trouble, both in
terms of
new users getting regularly chided by seasoned listers when
they make
a mistake by sending an HTML message, and additionally
because one of
the stated concerns about HTML email is that it might
contain a virus
(an extremely remote possibility, but still of potential
concern to
some people.) In that case, having the list server strip
HTML is the
*only* way to ensure this is prevented. Otherwise you give
end users a
false sense of security because they think they are on a
list that
bans HTML, yet it still comes through with high frequency
(I know I've
been guilty of sending an HTML message or two by mistake!)

Furthermore concerning the other, more legitimate, issue
with HTML
messages (file size), having the list software strip it out
before
sending has the added advantage of decreasing the size of
the messages
before passing them to the end users, which improves the
speed they
are downloaded for dial-up users.

I don't know what program Millennium uses to maintain
this list so I
can't be absolutely certain such a feature is included,
but if it
isn't then perhaps it's time to switch us to
something more robust and
better able to deal with these frequent errors that crop
up. In the
end we'll all be able to talk more about genealogy
research and spend
less time discussing the mailing list itself.

Cheers,
Steve

RE: [LegacyUG] Listserv spam/HTML issues (Was: Legacy Question)

2008-12-03 Thread John B. Lisle

Ron and others,

I am sure that Legacy staff is well aware of the problems and are
working with their vendors to resolve the issues, but it takes time.

I assume that we want the Legacy Staff to focus on Legacy, not Email.
Their Email vendors should be resolving those problems.

So... I suggest patience and an active use of the delete key until
these issues get resolved.

As to the HTML vs. Plain Text war...

Using Plain Text only on email for PUBLIC mailing lists is courtesy
both to the rest of the subscribers and to the list operator. List
subscribers benefit by smaller messages, and list operators benefit
by more effective list management.

RootsWeb has had a policy for 10+ years that all of the messages in
their email list system be plain text only with no attachments. I
suspect most online genealogists subscribe to one or more of those
lists. If they do, they have learned both how to send and how to
receive messages to their list with whatever email client they have.

Administrators (I admin dozens of lists) get all of the bad messages
sent to the list - messages from non-subscribers, HTML, messages with
attachments, messages too long, etc. and have to review them.

The only times that garbage gets to the lists is when a spammer
subscribes to the list or hijacks a legitimate subscriber email address.

As an admin, I can put a spammer on moderate mode or unsub them. I
can also moderate new subscriptions for a while to prevent a spammer
from continually trying to subscribe from a new address.

But that is for RootsWeb lists. RootsWeb maintains 1000s of lists
with likely millions of messages every month. They need to be on top
of their game and have highly customized it for the RootsWeb environment.

What we are talking about with the LUG list is a list maintained by a
private server, likely using some type of commercial, off-the-shelf,
mailing list software. It may not have all of the bells and whistles
that RootsWeb has.

And obviously, the LUG list has come under continuing attack, and, as
such, the problems mount.

We just need patience...

In GMAIL (Let me know if you want an account) - I just (in a minute or
less) set up a (SETTINGS, FILTER) filter that simply scans all
incoming Emails for the word " MailEnable: " and sends any message

Hi June,

I would agree with the tagging idea but would first start with the marriage
and unlink the spouse you want to delete. This will separate her from your
gggrandfather first and all should be well.

Re: [LegacyUG] [LegacyUserGroup] List Posting Error Notification

2008-12-03 Thread Ward Walker
Your comment makes me question how you are reading your e-mails. If you do
it as follows, the MailEnable e-mails will not bother you at all.
 - Automatically filter all [LegacyUG] e-mails off to a separate folder
from your Inbox folder.
 - When you choose to scan the Legacy UG e-mails, be sure to temporarily
set the viewing mode to a threaded view, or at least sort the e-mails by
subject. All the MailEnable error e-mails will be grouped together and that
thread can be ignored. (In the Windows Mail or Outlook Express readers, use
View --> Current View --> Group Messages by Conversation.)
 - Scan down the list and read the threads that interest you. If you want
to reply to an e-mail, do so or else flag it for later. If you want to
permanently save an e-mail, move it to another folder or flag it in place.
 - Bulk delete all non-flagged e-mails in that folder. This just takes a
few clicks.

This suggestion applies for any busy mail list (such as LegacyUG).

Hope this helps.

  Ward

P.S.: If you have to click 3-4 times to delete, it is probably because 3-4
separate but identical e-mails arrived a few minutes apart.
P.P.S.: If you do scan in a true threaded (hierarchical) view, and if this
view defaults to unexpanded threads, you might want to quickly expand each
thread to see if someone has accidentally hijacked the thread (that you were
not interested in) for a new subject (that you are interested in). This
happens every few days.

I am getting tired of receiving these messages so I am going to unsubscribe
from this list until it is fixed. It used to not be much of a problem but
now I can click the delete button and it is still there. I have to click
delete 3 or 4 times before it is deleted.

Folks,

I received the following (which I've edited slightly for privacy

If anyone wants to reply to the problems he's having, you can do so to

[LegacyUG] Descendant Book Register Report that Includes Address and Contact Info ?

2008-12-03 Thread Stuart Einbinder
I was very disappointed that the new version did not include the following
suggestion that I made in early July and was to be passed on to the
programmers. "Please allow for the check boxes in the "Individual Addresses"
to be included in the printed Descendent Books reports. That option is
greyed out now."

Is there any instance where the option (using the check boxes) of including
"Individual Addresses" in the printed Descendent Books reports is NOT greyed
out?

Does anyone know of any way to get a Descendant Report (Book Style - not a
chart) that includes address and contact info?

Thanks!

Stu E.

RE: [LegacyUG] Margaret Married Someone

2008-12-03 Thread ronald ferguson

Kirsten,

I have tied to reproduce this, albeit a day late, but cannot. I have tried
various ways - including some which crashed Legacy.

I leave unknowns as blank, so maybe this was why I haven't spotted it, but
changing to the "Unknown" default made no difference. One question though - you
say that the husband's name appears as "Someone Joe Blogs", if it actually uses
"someone" then how are you putting that in, when the default is unknown?

The new husband is overwriting the "Unknown" btw. I also take it that to enter
the husband's details you are using the "enter new person" option.

a problem with sources created before sourcewriter. I have the latest

So if anyone can answer Gary's 2 questions, I can pass them back to
him if he doesn't get them. The 2 questions are (1) why is Legacy
locking up and (2) why isn't he getting messages, although he can send
messages.

In answer to your second question, Gary, have you checked your spam or
antivirus for blocked posts? Is it somehow blocking all posts from
the LUG. Perhaps you marked the messages coming from "Ken" as spam
and now it has blocked all LUG messages.

Re: [LegacyUG] Help Please on Source Template Overrides

2008-12-03 Thread Jenny M Benson

Kay Fordham wrote
I'm seeing another problem that may have compounded my confusion
previously. I just copied the below-mentioned source to the clipboard,
then applied it to another individual. The detail screen then popped
up and I changed the information as appropriate for the new individual
and saved it. The Output Preview still shows the details for the
original Detail Screen - not the change made.

Is anyone else having this problem? Doesn't seem feasible that I would
need to do an override on the detail screen rather than just change
data and save it. Or is this the way it works?

My brain's a bit fuzzy at the moment (combination of heavy cold and cold
cures!) but I think I have worked through this correctly:

Working in the Source Detail screen, if you enter the Details on the
first tab, then click the Override tab there will be nothing entered in
the boxes, but if you click on "click here to go to the overrides tab"
the boxes will have the citations entered ready for you to edit.

If you copy a Source which has overrides to the Source Clipboard, then
paste it, it will paste with the overrides included and the checkbox
ticked for using that override. If you make changes to the Source
Detail and then want to incorporate these into an Override, you need to
make your Detail changes, then click "the output has been overridden by
the user. Click here ..." and then re-write your override sentence, not
just change the bits you have changed on the details screen.

I hope that makes sense!

Re: [LegacyUG] Listserv spam/HTML issues (Was: Legacy Question)

2008-12-03 Thread Steve Voght
One thing to note with those error messages is that their subject line
has two list names prefixing it: [LegacyUG] and [LegacyUserGroup].
All legitimate group messages are only prefixed by [LegacyUG]. This
implies to me that there's an old (or alternate) list with the name
[LegacyUserGroup] and somehow there is cross-talk between them.

(Below is a bit of speculation on my part, so all you Legacy users can
just ignore this and let the tech people laugh at my wild theories...)

Perhaps Ken is sending messages to a listserv address associated with
[LegacyUserGroup], which is then forwarding the messages to the
correct [LegacyUG] group, but [LegacyUG] rejects them because it
doesn't recognize Ken's address (or perhaps the [LegacyUserGroup]
listserv address) as a subscriber to [LegacyUG]. Meanwhile, because
the mailing lists are set up to REPLY-TO the listserv address, the
[LegacyUG] rejection message is sent back to the [LegacyUserGroup]
list (using the REPLY-TO instead of the FROM). Then [LegacyUserGroup]
receives it and treats it like any other message, again forwarding it
to [LegacyUG] like outlined above. This time the FROM address matches
a subscribed user (the [LegacyUG] listserv address itself!), so
finally these rejection messages get sent along to all of us, and we
get frustrated.

Or maybe it's something really silly, like a case-sensitive address?

Hi June,

You should be able to do this with advanced tagging and deleting.
These instructions work for Legacy 7 Deluxe -- I can't speak for which
features are available in Legacy 6 or the basic version. You need to
find a tag you aren't using for other purposes (and enable tagging
options from Options > Customize > General if you have not done so.)

Re: [LegacyUG] Help with deleting a family

2008-12-03 Thread Steve Voght

First select the root individual of the family you want to delete.
Then go to Edit > Tag Records... (or ctrl-T), select the tag number to
use, then select the Ancestors... button, and select the "Entire
Ancestor Line" button. Hit OK, and now the non-grandmother and all of
her family should be tagged. Close the tagging window.

Next go to Tools > Advanced Deleting... and select the tag number that
you assigned above. To be safe you can leave the "confirm each
deletion" button checked, and then it will prompt you for each
individual as it queues them up to be deleted from the database.
Simply confirm until they are all gone!

When you're done, you might want to verify there aren't any stray
individuals remaining from that branch by going to View > Tree Finder,
select "Refresh" and make sure that you don't have any unexpected
unlinked individuals.

Cheers,
Steve
