Mike,

I was going to ask you the obvious - have you checked your PC clock, but then
looked at the reminder for my grandson's birthday on the 3rd January; it says:
3rd January x will be 12 years old in 2 days time. Today is the 31st

So, no I hadn't looked but I have now and, yup, I agree! No excuse for being

Re: [LegacyUG] Merging basic sources into sourcewriter

2008-12-31 Thread Richard Van Wasshnova
Hi Lew,

I too was very upset with Legacy after upgrading from build 55. I had
done a half dozen merges of old syle to source writer which required
only slight touch ups. By the time I got back to trying to do more
(after build 55 was trashed) Legacy was protecting me from myself and
not allowing. I felt a strong warning might have been OK

However, Legacy has a good explanation. The Source Conversion Tool
will be available in the next build. You will first convert old
source, then merge.

This is probably because of the difference in how Americans and British count
years. In US, on your 365 day of life you become one, on your 365x2 day you
become two. In some places people are called 2 after the 366 day, ignoring leap

[LegacyUG] How to convert Family Tree to Legacy

2008-12-31 Thread leo macdonald

I have checked the archives but could not locate the correct answer, if it has
been answered please accept my apologies.
I have always used Legacy and think that it is the best program on the market.
I have a friend who has always used Family Tree Maker, she has just purchased
the Legacy 7 program and would like to know what is the best and easiest, step
by step way to transfer all her data from her Family Tree Maker program into
Legacy.
I'm sure that there are quite a few x-ftm's out there who have been converted
to Legacy, I'm sure that those of you who have transferred your data base
incorrectly have learned by trial and error.
There must be a way to transfer the data and still keep one's sanity intact.

details are provided there. Specifics vary slightly between versions

Re: [LegacyUG] Vista Data Redirection

2008-12-31 Thread Elizabeth Richardson
I use XP, not Vista, and Legacy is installed in its own folder, not Program
Files. I thought perhaps your having Legacy in Program Files was something
that Vista required, but looking at the Legacy Help page for Vista users, is
the following:

For Legacy Family Tree to run properly under Windows Vista, only install
the Legacy program to the default C:\Legacy folder, rather than changing it
to C:\Program Files\Legacy. If you install Legacy to the Program Files
directory, you will discover that Vista does not allow users to write files
to that location. Instead, Vista redirects any changes to Legacy files to a
Virtual Store folder, a location in the user's profile. This creates
serious problems, for example, if more than one user (people with different
user accounts) attempt to work in the same family file.

Hope this helps,

Subject: [LegacyUG] Vista Data Redirection

I recently noticed some odd behaviour with Legacy that I will share here.

I noticed I could only see all my data files and backups from within Legacy
only. If I used Windows Explorer or using search, these files couldn't be
seen at all. Odd indeed. I originally ignored this until I tried to do a
update and lost all my files, or so I thought.

As it turns out, under Vista you are not supposed to store data in the
Program Files directory. all files placed there are supposed to be placed
there by trusted installers. For backward compatibilty Microsoft has some
sort of redirection driver that places your data in a directory called
Virtual Store...

C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files

...as opposed to...

C:\Program Files

Somehow in doing the Legacy update, the link to the data files was lost.

I have since moved all my data files into the Documents folder and edited
my options to reflect this.

Re: [LegacyUG] How to convert Family Tree to Legacy

2008-12-31 Thread Chick Lewis
I did some experiments and converted my FTM-16 files to Legacy a few
months ago. I found this method works best:

Create the GEDCOM file from FTM as follows:
1. From the File menu: select Export File Entire File.
2. Click the Save as type drop-down list and select GEDCOM.
3. In the File name field, type a name for the GEDCOM file. It must
have the extension .GED.
4. In the Save in field, select the drive and folder where you want to
place your file.
5. Click Save and Family Tree Maker displays the Export to GEDCOM dialog box.
6. Make your selections from the dialog box as follows –
Destination: FTW,
Version: 5.5,
Character set: ANSEL,
Check the Abbreviate tags box.
7. Click the OK button and the GEDCOM file will be created.

Importing Gedcom to Legacy 7:
On the Gedcom import screen
1. Check the following:
Check: Check for valid date formats during this import.
Check: The dates in the Gedcom are in English
Check: Put unrecognized items into notes field
Check: Sort events by date while importing
2. Select Customize
Under Note Options select: Lines are broken in the middle of words.

Hope this helps...

[LegacyUG] Clipboard Source Automatically Changing

2008-12-31 Thread Judy
Prior to these latest minor updates, I had been able to create a Master
source, without using the Source Writer, fill in the general details for the
source and copy it to the clipboard, leaving the text/comments blank. I
could then apply the source to multiple individuals, filling in the
text/comments section as the specific details applied to each person.

But currently, even if I save a source with blank text/comments to the
clipboard, each time I add specifics for an individual, those specifics are
added to the clipboard, which is very annoying and making sourcing a very
irritating experience. The specifics will not apply to the next person for
whom I wish to use the original clipboard source.

What happened to the old source clipboard? It was hard enough when the

Re: [LegacyUG] Clipboard Source Automatically Changing

2008-12-31 Thread Steve Voght
Judy,

I'm certain this has been the standard behavior since at least version
7.0.0.55 (the one we had for a very long time until this sudden flurry
of updates). I often would realize after pasting a source into a few
spots that I had mistakenly inserted the same detail in a few spots
where it was not meant to be, and had to go back and fix the offending
entries. This is not new to the recent updates.

That doesn't answer your complaint about the old tabbed clipboard, but
the behavior of the new clipboard is the same as it has been for a
while (other than defaulting to 'prompt for detail' when you copy a
source to the clipboard, which I believe was added in 7.0.0.76.)

It probably does need a fix as an application shouldn't have an error
displayed that is based on its underlying technology. However, error 3021 is
a common one with Legacy and can be found from the Legacy web site

Go to the Legacy Home tab and click on Online Troubleshooting Help.
Click on Solutions by Error Number and then click on error 3021.

Don't try the download options if you are using Vista as you have the
correct files already.

RE: [LegacyUG] Merging basic sources into sourcewriter

That line must have been added automatically and, as Elizabeth said,
probably has something to do with those can't post messages we were
getting from the list.

Hi Kristen,

Thank you for your comment, but I am confused. I noticed at the bottom
of your message that an **Original Message from
k...@legacyfamilytree.com on behalf of Chick Lewis ** was referenced. I
did not receive a message from Ken. Do you know something I don't?

Maybe so, but it would be nice if Legacy would at least acknowledge
why the merge feature has been removed and tell us the pitfalls of
having done it that way. Legacy has been extremely silent on this
question and has not answered a message I sent directly to support.

If, as you say, the sourcewriter tool will be available in the next
build, I would like to ask, WHEN?

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy Home Tab Problem

But on 1 Jan 1901 you would celebrate your first birthday and be considered
one year old until your second birthday on 1 Jan 1902.

If your birthday was 1 jan 1900 then on 1 jan 1901 you would have entered
your 2nd year.

No Rich. Read it again. Today is the 31st Dec. His birthday
