Re: [LegacyUG] Suggested improvement or is it just me?

2009-03-03 Thread Bill Wilson
Not necessarily... If Outlook Express is running in the task bar and
you double click the Icon on the desktop then another copy is not
started but the one in the task bar is brought up, so it would seem
that Legacy could do this too. I wouldn't want multiple copies of OE
or Legacy to be running either but some programs will allow you to
have multiple copies running which can be a good thing in a lot of
cases.

Double-clicking on the desktop icon tells the computer to start another copy
of the program. You shouldn't want to have two copies of the program running
 at once.

Re: [LegacyUG] splitting up a family tree

2008-11-04 Thread Bill Wilson
How I split my database was to save the database to two different
files; One for my family and one for my wife's family. I then used
advanced tagging to tag (all my wife's ancestors in my database) (all
my ancestors in my wife's database) and delete them. Using the tree
finder I found several tree fragments. A little clean-up a couple
hours later it was done.

For me, and possibly for others, some circumstances may make the
option of two databases make sense. All my children are from a
previous marriage and all my wife's children are from her previous
marriage and we will never have children of our own. Our research
purpose is to create a family history for our children so my kids
would have no interest in her side of the family and likewise hers
would not be interested in my side. I also felt no relatives from her
side of the family would have interest in my relatives and vice-versa.
So, combining the families would imo just add clutter for anyone
interested in looking through the data for their family. We
currently have no common ancestors and it doesn't look likely that a
connection will be made in that respect. The only commonality between
the two databases is: I'm in my wife's and she's in mine. As far as
descendants go, I keep her kids and their spouses and descendants in
her database and mine are in my database. At one point I too had
everything in one database but divided it several years ago and I'm
glad I did. If connections ever entangle our families I will entertain
combining everything into one database again but until then I'm quite
happy with keeping them separated.

Note: I did try briefly to seperate the databases out into four
databases (my father, my mother, her father, her mother) and that, to
me, was quite unmanagable.

Re: [LegacyUG] saving file, etc

2008-04-15 Thread Bill Wilson
As I understand your post You want to change which colums are
displayed in the index view and have several views with different
colums showing. If this is the case then here's how...

1. In index view right mouse click on the column heading above the names.

2. Click on customize. In the pop-up, select the colums you want
displayed and then on the right side of the pop-up click save. In the
next pop-up give it a file name and save it.

3.Modify the colums again then save to a different name.

4.Do this for as many views as you need. Then the next time you right
click on the header above the names in the list it will let you select
one of the saved views.

It sounds like you renamed the original file instead of copying it.
If you did it within Legacy, you must use Save As, to create a copy.
Then make sure you are working in your new file.

Is it possible that the changes are only in the original file?

You can't write to two files at once.

Or did you think a Legacy file was like a Word document and that you
could make the changes and then save as a different file leaving the
original untouched? The order is crucial. Everything you change in
Legacy is saved to the file on the fly.

I just ran into a problem and can't come up with an answer.

I need to make a presentation by giving a demonstration using Legacy
and thought the easiest way to make it clear to the viewers would be
to make a step-by-step view of the index file as the changes were
made to it. I first made a copy of the file and saved it under a
different name, say file 1. On file 1, I then made the changes I
wanted to show, closed that file down and backed it up. Now I
should have the original file and file 1, the original without the
changes and file 1 with the changes. I wanted to make sure that I
had both files the way I wanted them before I made the next change
but when I went back to the original file the changes I had made to
the file called file 1 were on the original file as well.

Surely, there is the capability within Legacy to do this but I can't
find a way. Any help out there?

Re: [LegacyUG] creating a website using rootsweb freepages

2007-07-09 Thread Bill Wilson

Syble, here's my suggestion.

When you create the web pages for the Cline family go to the Project tab and
in the project name field enter cline. Use the Save button in the lower
right to save this and any other custom settings for the Cline sitw to a
file e.g. cline_web_project. Saving the project will allow you to load it in
the future the next time you want to create the Cline pages. When you enter
cline in the Project name field notice that the location field reight below
it changes to C:\Legacy\Web\cline. This will be where all the Cline web
pages will be located. Click the Create button to create the Cline pages.

Next, open the other family file. Go to the web page creation utility again.
Make all the changes or customizations to the web creation fields you want
to change for the other family for which you want to create web pages.
Change the Project name to the other family name and save it as you did for
the cline family e.g. glasscock_web_project. Notice that the web page
location changed to include a folder utilizing the new project name. Create
the Glasscock pages.

Now you have pages for each family in seperate folders. Upload these folders
to your site. You should be able to access each site by browsing to:

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~sybleg/cline
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~sybleg/glasscock

The next thing you need to do is to greate an index.htm page with links to
each of those sites and upload it to
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~sybleg/. This index page can be
done in a number of ways. If you want help with creating the index page

 Subject: [LegacyUG] Legacy program

I purchased a Legacy Deluxe Program via the internet. I did not get a
disk, it was just downloaded.
I am organiseing a family reunion and want to put my Legacy program onto
my laptop.
 How do I do it.
Sorry this may seem a dumb question. But I can't think of a way to do it.

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy - What is it for?

2007-02-15 Thread Bill Wilson

I agree too. However for me that (along with your includes) would include:

a) web page generation (needs some improvement).
b) single event attached to multiple individuals.
c) separate the program files from the user files. i.e. put the
program in Program Files and put the user files in My Documents.

Of course I'm sure there are any number of Legacy users that would
love to see things like photo manipulation, word processing
capabilities and indeed other cool features included. These options
are not important to me now but as the genealogy programs evolve they
will inevitably have all these and other capabilities. A few years
from now when they're talking about adding web crawlers to run in the
background to search for all information from library, government, or
any other linked info (and all databases will be linked) on anyone in
your family and also checks for 100% surety and auto updates your file
and generates new updated reports and web pages with advanced word
processor formatting while you sleep. Well, how did they manage to
do research manually back on 07? It must have been so tedious. I can't
imagine spending hours and hours every week searching for family data.
I think I'll just go back to sleep and see what my personal
genealogist has found for me when I wake up.

And if Legacy doesn't add these features someone else will! And that's
how companies lose the edge. So, I don't think it's time for the
Legacy folks to get rid of all the programmers in the new features
development area. I'm looking forward to v7.0.

Every once in a while I think about switching to another genealogy
program. I'm very particular about fully investigating a programs
capabilities before I buy and so far I haven't found anything that
works better for me than Legacy. I've tried PAF and FTM and neither
one is up to Legacy's capabilities. TMG has the witness feature but as
far as I can tell their web page generation isn't as good as Legacy's.
I hate to sound like a Legacy commercial but it really is a great
program even if they keep adding all those dreaded advanced
capabilities.

ok, I guess I'm done rambling.

I too support Legacy remaining a pure genealogy program. However for me
that includes
a) the ability to export its reports to a wordprocessor for further editing
(which it does)
b) and - because it has become a accepted part of genealogy programs - much
improved charting capability

Try entering the following into Legacy Individual notes or any Legacy text
field where you want the link to appear:

«a HREF=http//www.rootsweb.com»Click here to visit Rootsweb«/a»

Then generate the web pages.
