[LegacyUG] Finding media links

2008-12-31 Thread Dave Keeney
Is there a way to find all Legacy media linked to a particular directory?

When I "View the Current List of Multimedia" (customize-locations) I see a
couple of directories that I didn't expect.

Those directories have 100s of media in them.

I'm trying to find what media from those directories are linked somewhere in
Legacy.

Under Customize/Locations, click the box that says View Current List of
Multimedia Locations. Make the folders you want ahead of time so you
have the places you want to move the present folders to.

RE: [LegacyUG] Changing Pictures Directory Structure

2008-12-27 Thread Dave Keeney
Thanks JL but I don't think I explained it clearly enough.

My Pictures file (in customize/locations) is C:\Legacy7\Pictures.
I have several directories under that directory, e.g.
C:\Legacy7\Pictures\Birth, C:\Legacy7\Pictures\Death, etc.
I want to move several of those directories out of legacy7\pictures\, but
not all.
So I want to end up with C:\Legacy7\Birth and C:\Legacy7\Death.
And then all of my picture links changed from C:\Legacy7\Pictures\Birth to
C:\Legacy7\Birth, etc.
I don't think customize/locations will do that will it? At least I can't see
how it changes existing links.

[LegacyUG] Changing Pictures Directory Structure

2008-12-26 Thread Dave Keeney
If I change the directory structure where pictures are located is there an
easy way to reflect that in Legacy without changing every link individually?

For instance if I have directories a\b\c\Birth and a\b\c\Death containing
Birth & Death certificate pictures and want to change them to a\b\Birth and
a\b\Death (moving up one level) directories can I easily change that in all

2008-11-29 Thread Dave Keeney
No not an incredible number that can't be spotted immediately!
That is if you go to the trouble of having to open up the Source Page from
the Individual for everyone you're sourcing for every page. But why do that
if you know what you want to source and it's on the clipboard - just a lot
of extra work that doesn't need to be done.

No apology needed! You are, of course, free to do whatever you want,

Citing a source multiple times (with different detail) to the same event
(e.g. birth) seems to act differently with version 7 than it did with prior

Have others noticed this or might I have missed a setting somewhere.

Example: I have SourceA (book) that gives birth information on two different
pages. I add the source with Detail - "page 1", and then again with Detail -
"page 2". It used to show up as two sources, one with detail "page 1" and
the other with detail "page 2". It now shows up as one source with detail
"page 1".

I just downloaded the newest update 7.0.0.76, and almost went crazy b/c
Legacy was combining all my sources for a single event into a single
footnote on a family group sheet. However, when I went to the Sources tab on
the Report Options screen, I noticed there was a new option called "If an
event has multiple citations, combine them into a single paragraph." There
is a checkbox next to the option that is defaulted with a checkmark.
Therefore, if you are like me, and do not like this combining of sources for
an event, then don't forget to uncheck the box. I thought something was
wrong at first b/c I wasn't used to this option. Just wanted to save
everyone a lot of grief and frustration.

Yes, EXCEPT I was using the new source writer templates.
I think that's the problem (difference).
I tried creating a new source without using the templates and it functions
the same as in the old version - except all Detail is omitted from the
reports (individual) now.

I may just have to wait for an update to see what happens. Thanks for trying
it.

I just downloaded V7 on an old PC. I installed it and copied my V6
database over. I then opened the database in V7 (which converted the
database to V7). I added a source to an event with detail = xxx. I then
added the same source to the same event with detail = yyy. No other
entries. Both citations were entered in the database. Does this sound
like what you did? If so, then there must be something else going on to
make it work different for you.

BTW, I was using old style sources.

Dave: I understand what you are trying to say. I too use a book to source
different information on various pages.
You are right, version 6 use to show, for example the birth source in
"Jefferson County History and Atlas" and the detail "page xx" and then the
death would be sourced as "Ibid, page yy." This looks nice on reports.
Version 7 nolonger uses the "Ibid". And it does repeat the first detail
used completely neglecting the following detail information. This has got to
be a serious bug!!

Why on earth would you cite the same Source twice? Just cite the Source

"page 1".

I think it's appropriate here. I would like to know that answer too.
And if it's not asked/answered on this list a lot of people (who may want to

Aren't you asking the wrong people? The is the Legacy Users Group.
If indeed the Geo Location Database is controlled by "the folks at
Millenium" (or better yet, the folks at Millennia) why not direct the
question to them? They're more likely to know the answer!

[LegacyUG] Geo Coding "of location"

2008-07-06 Thread Dave Keeney
Is there any easy way to geo code locations that contain "Of ."?

I know it codes ", , , Belgium" correctly but not with the "Of" included.
I'd like to geo code it as ", , , Belgium".

The only way I've found is to copy longitude of the ", , , Belgium" entry,
Close it, find the "Of" version, Edit, Paste, Close that and do the same for
the Latitude. Or Write the long/lat down and re-key.

And Belgium above is just an example. I've got lots of "Of locations".

Alas mine were all poor folk, so this hasn't happened yet!
I would probably grit my teeth and use one Master Source, then Detail.
As I already said, my extreme splitting of Census occurs for one year

I started this many years and 4 family history programs ago. It would
be a huge job to change retrospectively. I might lump new stuff using

it's no more difficult to access 500 or 5,000 Sources than 220 - if
they're sensibly named.

Nope - that's not what I was looking for. Yes, it prints a good chart of
the relationship between those 2 people. But I recall a "generic" chart
that showed no names, just a diagram that showed what a "second cousin once
removed" was - i.e.: it had a whole series of relationships on one chart
(self, parent, grand parent, great grand parent, etc, etc, etc).

Thanks for the suggestion though,
Bob

You can, but it is not recommended. If you do you will also have to transfer
all your settings and you will find it harder to uninstall Legacy 6 should
you ever wish to.

When installing just specify the folder where you want it to go.

No! Without Microsoft's IE7 being installed the only part of Legacy
7 that will not be fully functional is the interface with Microsoft's
Virtual Earth for the mapping feature.

I no longer seem to get this, it just changes the original source.

How much do I have to change or what fields need to be changed for it to ask

RE: [LegacyUG] PDF files and Picture Center

2006-12-27 Thread Dave Keeney
I'm not Keith but I'll answer also. Yes, I've created pdf forms for each
census and I transcribe each of the jpg images.

The advantage to me is that others can see my interpretation of the
sometimes (mostly) unreadable scans. A lot of people that view my genealogy
are not interested in spending hours on an image interpreting it. When they
question my transcription they can always go to the actual image file.

I used to do it mainly for my own edification since lots of pictures (jpg
and/or pdfs) didn't work very well for me in Legacy reports but now that I
have a TNG web site it's ideal for posting both and I therefore need to
attach my files to people, families, and events. It's so much more time
consuming to do it with the picture gallery I was hoping to be able to use
the Picture Center.

My census records come as jpg images. When you say yours are pdf files, do
you mean the transcript you typed of the listings or the actual census page

RE: [LegacyUG] PDF files and Picture Center

2006-12-26 Thread Dave Keeney
I've done that many times in the Picture Gallery ('Show Picture Gallery for
this Person' icon on the Family Page) by adding "Sounds".

The thing I can't figure out is how to do this from the Picture Center
("Tools - Picture Center ."). I don't see any option to change to pdf. No
matter where I browse it only shows jpg, png, bmp, etc. (Maybe that's why
it's called "Picture" center ;-))).

I've got many pdf files to attach to various people & events. The Picture
Center is very nice for doing this with image files. I'm hoping I can use it
to do the same with non-image files (e.g. sound).

Am I missing something basic?

RE: [LegacyUG] How do you record someone acting as a witness? Changes in County boundaries?

2006-06-25 Thread Dave Keeney
So do you record 'headstones' in Legacy? If so, how?

I'm going to (I think) use Legacy events, attach the picture to the source
and then manually link them in TNG to the correct individual. I think that
will get me there with the least amount of (re)work.

But to do this I need to move my TNG Headstones directory to my Photos
directory. No problem but since my directory structure is broken down by
State - County - City - Cemetery name I exceed the 64 character limit. If I
can't get that changed I'll regroup.

RE: [LegacyUG] Issue re: entering Sources for Events

2006-06-23 Thread Dave Keeney
David, I do things more like you (separator) than the consolidators and have
found it to be much more functional and easier to change. And I really don't
think that 'many' master sources are any less manageable that a 'few' master
sources.

I started using one master for each enumeration district and copying the
detail to the multiple individuals detail. My problem was that I made too
many errors and had to change the detail source. For me it's easier to
change the master and automatically get everything changed than go find all
the places I have details. I've not got my tree converted using one master
source for each page of the census that I use.

So before you change just give it a lot of thought. I think you're way is
right -- for me at least.

I do believe I might change is Legacy had a Master-Detail source level that
has been discussed and asked for but until then I'm with you.

So when you do publish do you plan on customizing the sentences and then
removing the 'notes'? Or is there some way to hide [[]] the notes for Legacy
but use them in TNG and vice versa for the sentence structures.

I'm also using TNG and struggling with 'having my cake' and 'eating it too'.
If you find a way to make both systems look good without too much re-editing
I'd love to hear about it.

The 1920 US Census form prints fine for me. Are you printing in Landscape
mode?

RE: [LegacyUG] Census data in Legacy

Unfortunately, yes that is the only way to do it in Legacy.
