[LegacyUG] SPAM

2007-09-21 Thread Graeme Ellis
Legacy users

I have a spam filter which I pay an annual fee for and I notice that
'some' Legacy users emails always end up in there.
It's ususally a long list that I just delete in one go but this morning
I had a good look throught it. The following Legacy emails were in
there.
I presume because of their unusual address!!

HYPERLINK "mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]"[EMAIL PROTECTED]
HYPERLINK "mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]"[EMAIL PROTECTED]

I just thought I'd mention it as other users may be using the same
filtering.

[LegacyUG] Family Name History

2007-08-18 Thread Graeme Ellis
I thought I would pass on an idea that I have been playing with and see
if there is any interest.
(I apologise in advance if someone has come up with it before.)

When I have gone back as far as I can or as far as I want to (off shoots
that are no longer related) I create one more person and call him "~
Name History", the ~ being the surname of that line. (Example Ellis Name
History)

I then research the Family Name and enter the information as an Event.

It would be great if I could also enter a copy of the family crest (coat
of arms) somewhere.

Obviously the extra person ends up as a Grandfather.

Maybe Legacy can look at this as a future enhancement - a place to put
the name History and a place for the Family Crest.

It would round off the Family Tree very nicely I feel.

Regards

Jenny, back a few months, I would have been solidly with you. Since
then, I've run into problems with the Q scheme while importing (Legacy
made) GEDCOMs and doing merges. I've been forced to think hard about
making a distribution to family and workers on connecting families, and
had a couple of lessons about reasoning from data which was or wasn't
rigorous. Right now, I find myself very nervous about GEDCOM
standardization.

At first sight, the Q scheme is very attractive for just the reason you
like it. It gives the information and very compactly implies the exact
kind of data it is. But exactly what kind is that? It looks like the
event dates to within the quarter, but at the best of times, some
percentage is systematically from the previous quarter due to reporting
delays. Particularly in the early years, the delay may be substantial.

Much more disturbing though, is the question whether the datum is for
the right person . . .If you don't get to look at the actual report,

you've no guard against aliasing - inadvertently using data for a
different person of the same name - and comfort with the Q scheme tends
to render everyone uncritical about that. My thought of defining an
Event doesn't fix the logical problem, but it does give room for a
caution and leave the main entries with cautionary modifiers.

Further, with a defined Event, the Mar, Jun, Sep or Dec date is
accurate, so one can dispense with the Q entirely. That should avoid
problems with facets of Legacy and companions which don't yet work with
quarters, and with potential for violations of GEDCOM specifications.
That's something I'm running into now - while still just an amateur
genealogist and family historian. Some of the people I'm distributing to

use programs other than Legacy. The supposed standard GEDCOM 5.5 that I

send gives them problems with import, notably with Q dates. It's a
pain with the two core English families which form part of a 1500
individual group. If that had been combined into the total database of
some 20,000, it would have been a nightmare.

Regards

[LegacyUG] Comparing files

2007-01-13 Thread Graeme Ellis
I've just received someone else's family who is related to me.
I have gone through and compared files (Tools/Compare Files) and updated
data on the same people by using split screen and drag and drop.

BUT how do I get a list of all those that are on the new file that aren't on
mine.

In other words I want to see who he has on his file that I don't have on
mine.
It looks like about 200 names that I want to list out.

In many cases, people using Windows based software usually default to
HTML.

In some cases, people probably don't realize they are sending messages in
HTML or don't know how to change it. Many people that are not what I
would

call "computer savvy" just may not know there is a difference and may not
know what someone is referring to when discussing HTML. I try to remember
to watch and change it, but frankly, I don't mind if my messages come to
me

in HTML or plain text. Either one if fine with me.

Sherry,

Is there absolutely no way at all for the Legacy usergroup
software/server to block HTML messages. The amount of HTML messages to
the list are getting ridiculous. I don't know which is worse, the font
that is so small one needs a magnifying glass to read it, or the the
messages that people feel compelled to use a either a colored font or a
huge bold font. I beleive you could send out 20 requests a day asking
people to refrain from using HTML and they are just not going to comply,
whether by choice or lack of knowledge. If HTML messages were blocked
like they are on rootsweb's mailing lists, then folks would be forced to
either send a plain text message or they would not be able to
participate on the list.

Thank you,

  With
a difference in the numbers, then the first thing to do is go to the "tree
finder" and press "refresh". The tree finder figures aren't continually
updated by the system. Hopefully this will then find the lost people. Failing
that then do a File Check/Repair

I tried that - it showed 2924 in my family and 9
others.
But when I look in "Legacy Home - Statistics" it
shows 3061 - a difference of 128.

To start, you can click on "view" and then "tree finder".
This gives you a list of each individual tree in your database.  Almost
everyone in my database is related to me.  However, I have quite a list
of unlinked individuals (1 person) and unlinked families (2-10 people) that
lived in the vicinity of my folks but I have not yet found their connection to
my family.  Granted, I have lots of folks with unusual surnames, not
lines full of Smiths or Jones.  DawnGraeme Ellis wrote:

Hence I have found several people that are not
related to me.
How can I produce a list of these people for
probable deletion?

Graeme,
When you are confident the relationship calculator is working properly,
you can set relationship and then Search for Relationship equals not
related. (not sure of the exact wording and I haven't got Legacy open at
the moment).

But I'd be a bit careful about deleting all these people. I, for one,
prefer to have the parents of those who married into my lines in my
database. These are people not related to me but help identify those who
did marry in. If these other families lived in the same area, I'd be
inclined to leave them be unless they're still alive and there are privacy
concerns. You're likely to find someone else connected to them just after
you've deleted them ;-)

Graeme, a little word of caution. I believe that there are some problems
with the relationship function at present. Whether this affects your case
I do not know but I understand the problem will be sorted out in the next
update - maybe it is worthwhile waiting before deleting anything.

Re: [LegacyUG] Problem with File Importing

2006-10-17 Thread Graeme Ellis

I also struck this problem and because it didn't
seem to work I merged again.
In the end I found them all mixed up - A real
shambles.
Lucky we make backups.

I solved it in the end by just doing family
group merges.  The smaller merges seemed to work okay.

I have two files each about 2000 KB.
When I merged them, the resulting file was nearly twice that size, yet I could
see the names from only one of the files (at least that's what it looks like
at first glance).  Why can't I see all the entries?

Thanks a lot - you may hear from me again soon.
I'm still feeling my way around Legacy.
I brought the Users Guide which has been a help but doesn't answer
everything.

Thanks again.

Hi Graeme,

Re 1)
Where you attach images of BDM Certificates is your choice.
You might want to run some test reports or web pages to see how they
look - if you are wanting them to appear. I think you'll find they're not
readable on reports wherever you attach them - not sure about web pages.

Re 2)
Whether you can easily get a list of those with BDM certificates and/or
Census records depends on how you have sourced.

The easiest way is to go to Master Sources, highlight all the Certificate
sources and/or Census sources and click Show list - to get a list of
individuals using those sources.

Or tag these sources in the Master list and run a Source report using
Tagged sources only.

Unfortunately you have to tag the sources one at a time.
