Re: [LegacyUG] non-latin lanuguages solution

2006-12-29 Thread Keren

Jeff,
You may need your CD of XP.
I had already Hebrew keyboard installed. For that you need to go to
Control Panel - regional and language options - language tab - details.
Click on add and pick the language in "input language".
Down you will see Preferences, there you click on "language bar" and
enable the option
"show the language bar on the desktop" (an icon will appear next to the
task bar, it will

enable you to quickly switch languages .)

In details there is also an advanced tab, enable the "extend support of
adv text..."

Then do the stuff I explained in the previous mail. (see below)
Of course you need to have Hebrew fonts installed on your PC.

- There are so-called overlays for US keyboards to type Hebrew. (so you
will see
where the specific letters are) I cannot tell you were to find it,
because mine is years old,

(and only fits on my laptop now. )
- Please note, Brian mentioned the Hebrew will probably show as square
boxes
on a computer without Hebrew fonts. When I get this confirmed, I may
decide to
do it the way I originally planned: screen capture and attach the info
as JPG files.

I've never been very good in explaining stuff, so I hope it's clear
enough! :-))

Hi Glen,

Well, I do not know too much about Unicode characters, but I checked
Hebrew fonts

and some of them are Unicode, so I guess it would help.
But it is always a bit of trying to figure things out, when you mix
Latin and non-Latin characters anyway.
Word has a problem mixing these too by not applying the right to left
and left to right correctly.
So I would have to see what it would do to Legacy and than probably
would decide to attach them (Hebrew names etc.)

as files anyway.
It is the best solution up till now, I open my Word document and with a
screen capture program I

select the name, save it as an JPG file and attach that file to Legacy.

By using a document you also prevent mistakes due to hasty input because

When I'm out and about doing research, I record my findings in a

too. The only time I alter the Legacy data on the laptop/reference
copy is when I'm working through the ToDo list, in which case I close
items that I've done as I work so I can see what is left to attend
to. Of course, the items on the desktop/working copy will need to be
altered later on as well, so this is a duplication, but I can live
with that; on the reference copy all I do is mark an item "Closed", on
the working copy I'll also enter details about what the research found.

Re: [LegacyUG] Attaching Digital material

2006-12-16 Thread Keren
My digital material is yes divided that is I have no video material
attached to Legacy.
And actually only that material related to non-living relatives, like
documents, pics etc.
I do have a separate database of this that includes all material of
living relatives too
and I browse that with other software and I also share it with other
family members without using Legacy.

I have another database with downloaded/ photocopied original records or
cd's (yes those are copied
on my hard disk) etc. of towns. Those are divided by locality in
separate folders.
When I find a specific piece of info on an ancestor, I extract it and
attach that to Legacy.

In Legacy I use different folders. When an ancestor has a lot "attached"
I give him/her an own folder.
I also have different folders, for general files, like pictures of the
houses and towns, articles that say general

stuff about history of the time the ancestor lived in.

Re: [LegacyUG] Non-latin languages

2006-12-15 Thread Keren
Well, keyboard and added languages in Word and/or XP are not an issue
with me.

That's covered. Actually the names are in a Word document already.
I have no idea if Legacy is Unicode compliant though and what would it
do for non-latin

languages? I am not able to type non-latin in Legacy notes for instance.
I am mainly interested in the use of Legacy to record it. As you mention
PDF is a way, but

only if you have some more info to put in.
I am mostly looking for a way to attach the name written in original
non-latin language, that's
why I was thinking of selecting the name in Word and then capture it
(like print screen), save
it as .jpg file. I use a nice tool for this called FastStone Capture,
that handles the job very well.
I hoped to get some input on this from LUG users, maybe there are other
ways to add it to Legacy.

Regarding your third question, I've often been faced with the same

called himself/herself. I had a Wilhelmus (baptism) or Wilhelm
(marriage), but his will was signed "William" so that's what I use as
the preferred name. My database is primarily for posting at RootsWeb,
however, and other researchers of this line most often use
"Wilhelmus" for this individual. In order to have my file picked up
in searches, I now show him as "William or Wilhelmus."
May I add to this, since we have the wonderful feature of AKA's it is
made easier to clarify all the names used by an ancestor. In the tittle
suffix I place info about were the AKA was found. i.e. Say John Smith
was spelled John Smitt in his marriage record in 1830. I place in the
suffix His MARR-1830, this way I will always know, when I search through
the name list which spellings were used and when. Very handy when I go
through digitalized records.
Before this I was taught to use the spelling of the name (first and
last) of birth/bap etc All the other spellings went into the notes.
Actually I believed then it was a general rule :-))
Still this way I always know were the name comes from, that's why I am
still using the birth/bap etc name as main one, see no use in changing
it with so many names in my database.

I have an additional issue, that is, names in a non-Latin languages,
this gives many different spellings when names pop up in latin languages
or when you have to translate it yourself.. And no way of recording the
original spelling. I started to put these in a document of Word, and now
face the task of integrating them user-friendly into Legacy. Probably I
will use PDF files or print screens .jpg and attach them to the
individual. Any other idea's are welcome though I am still in
doubt how to do this.

To everyone thank you for your answers!
It gave me some insight what to expect. I will not transfer to another
genealogy software though.
It took me long enough to find the (almost) perfect one and I am very
satisfied with Legacy's features.

And for all the services like updates and support!
I got to know it very well after all these years and hate to give that
up for getting to know a new program (again).

Elaine mentioned the possibility of a dual boot if I understood correctly.
And who knows when I am ready to buy the Mac, it improved its MS
compatibility.

The option of a laptop running on MS Windows sounds to me as a good
second option, because I already have one for visiting the archives.
I'd prefer having it all on one PC, specially because I collected quite
some databases from towns within my search area through the years.

For these databases I need several software programs to access them.
I guess that's a choice I have to make when time is there to buy a new
PC. :-)

Thanks again, regards, Keren

[LegacyUG] Mac version of Legacy?

2006-10-13 Thread Keren

In the future I am considering to leave MS and its not yet released Vista
system behind me and go for the Apple Macintosh.
I got a couple of questions:

- I checked system requirements for Legacy and it's not compatible for the Mac.
Is this ever going to happen or is Legacy going to stay focused on MS systems.
(Can you put Legacy as it is now on a MAC anyway?)
- I heard Macintosh is busy with a system on their PC's that is going to be
compatible with specific MS software, does any one here know about that?

Not sure I understand your question - Passage Express is
simply
_presentation_ software.  If you want to put together a
CD/DVD with
genealogical data (web pages, family group sheets,

(obviously
preferably Legacy!) to provide the data.
