RE: [LegacyUG] Overprint in Table of Contents

2009-01-25 Thread M Couch
If I've understood you correctly

When you go to print a book from the Publishing Centre, you find that the
Table of Contents (TOC) is overprinting your Title Page.

I can replicate the problem: if I choose to generate a TOC under
, then I find it overwrites the last "additional" page checked;
Dedication, Preface, Abbreviations, etc. and if you have none of these
checked, it will overwrite the Title Page.
A work around could be to select one of the additional pages you weren't
planning to use and delete anything on it, including the title. The Table of
Contents will then print on the newly blank page and leave your title page
as you intended.

This needs reporting as a bug.

RE: [LegacyUG] Re: Access dates

2009-01-30 Thread M Couch
I've enjoyed the energetic discussion on this topic, it's so hard to convey
nuance over the 'net though:-), easy to misinterpret.

To give you some context, I teach tertiary students, they are back in class
next week and we will be revisiting the referencing style guide, so this was
fresh in my mind.

Most current scholarly sourcing guides (not just EE) do require accessed or
retrevial date for electronic sources because of the frequent changes on
websites. Think of it as type of version number.

The quote below from the APA Style guide (American Psychological
Association) - often used in humanities. It pretty much covers what other
contributors have written.

"Retrieval date. The date an electronic source was retrieved is important if
the content you are citing is likely to be changed or updated. When no fixed
publication date, edition, or version number can be cited, the retrieval
date offers a snapshot of the content at the time of your research.

For undated or otherwise changeable content retrieved from the open Web, as
well as in-preparation, in-press, or preprint journal articles, include the
retrieval date. No retrieval date is necessary for content that is not
likely to be changed or updated, such as a journal article or book..."

Of course, if it's important to you to have the date, then record it. Does
EE require it? (Not that I'd probably care if it does, but the standard
sourcing I've seen in other scholarly journals does not include this
information.) I'm not out to prove that I'm a better researcher than the

RE: [LegacyUG] Help please

Hi Toni
The joys of changing genealogy programmes, eh?

For the carry over capitalisation glitches - NZ to Nz or USA to Usa try
this.

Use the Search tab and 'search and replace'
In the top box "Find Where" use the down arrow to find "Lists-Location"
Then type in your changes and click Start, all locations using NZ will be
changed. Its quicker than changing the Locations line by line in the master
list.

*Take care with Nz to NZ if you have Cornish forebears from Penzance they
may suddenly be from PeNZance, you can avoid that by using the choices, but
if that does happen, its easy to fix.

Family Group sheet - try creating a text file instead, it come with few
lines, you can open it in your word processor and edit freely.

Hang in there

You can use the method posted yesterday in answer to a similar question.

Use the Search tab and 'search and replace'
In the top box "Find Where" use the down arrow to find "Lists-Location"
Then type in your changes(Co in the upper box, County in the lower one) and
click Start, all locations using Co will be changed to County.

*Take care though, or you may find locations like Cornwall become
Countywell. Experiment with a test file first, try out the settings options
and check that the 'Find & Replace' works well for you. The short locations
should be unchanged, but check.

RE: [LegacyUG] Geo Location database

Hi Lester
Unfortunately, the Geo location database for new Zealand is something that
Legacy doesn't do very comprehensively. There are no provinces in the
database, just cities and country. Christchurch is there, but don't try and
match it with Canterbury, just settle for New Zealand.

I have both the Europe & Pacific location databases loaded but I only use
them as spell checkers and place locators. I remove any extra commas and add
in the NZ provinces to the long place name and remove it from the shortened
one, eg. Christchurch, Canterbury, New Zealand; Christchurch, NZ.

Have fun circumventing the standards!

Yes Thomas, the Harvard version really did have a lowercase road and the

At the bottom of each page of citations was the following warning:

"Note: These citations are based on the reference standard for each style.
However, formatting rules within a style can vary widely between
applications and fields of interest or study. The specific requirements or

I think thats worth remembering before getting too hung up on the 'right'

I know I am doing something wrong. Why is it including anything about a

Hello Tom

You wrote
"Not having received a response to the following, I am posting it again... >

I've run a pedigree report for myself and confirm that the people who don't
carry forward from the 5th generation position on the right of a page are
those without parents: ie they have no pedigree entered so they don't become
person number 1 on the subsequent tree. The name should appear in the spouse
position on their husband or wife's pedigree.

Check to see if one of the people with no parents entered as in your
example, actually have "unknown" parents entered. This can happen if you
click into the parent boxes, don't enter anything and leave - easy to do. I
found "Unknown" parents will give you the inconsistencies you report.

Hope that helps

I have this one person which was christened 'Anton Marius Sorensen'

Vinther.
Whether the reason for the missing Vinther at Anton's christening was due to
a clerical error or some other reason I don't know, but there is no doubt
that Anton perceived him self as a Vinther. Therefore I'm inclined to set
his primary name as Anton Marius Winther, and his christening name as an AKA

RE: [LegacyUG] How to Source...

For sources relating to places I have lived, I use:
transfer records for moving house (when the government moved employees
around).
Utilities bills (it will give people coming after me a chuckle to see the
price I paid).

electoral rolls,

No obvious (to me anyway) source to pick for something I know is true
because I lived it. Or something my mother recalled. Should I simply
add my name as a source? One good example is residence. I know where
we lived for most of my life - and certainly know where my wife and I
have lived since we married. These are facts - but a source?

Probably something quite simple - but I am trying to clear things up
from the past 4-5 years of throwing data into my file without decent
sourcing (what a mess!).

Hi Lavern

Think of cousin marriages. It isn't the only time you will link to an
"existing person", but in my database, it's the most frequent use of that
option. I also have a few stray people on the database - I know they're
related somehow, when I find the link, I use the link to existing person
option.

Blank records are often attached to a marriage to take the place of a

I have tried to edit this without success, I get the option to Add a husband

when I try to do the latter, I get a blank page where I can add his name but
not the option to remove "Unknown"...

RE: [LegacyUG] Surnames

2007-03-26 Thread M Couch

One more thing on this thread about having two, unhyphenated surnames - you
can also enter a 'hard space' between the two last name words - hold down
the Alt key and enter 0160 from the numeric keypad. This will keep the two
words together without the appearance of a hyphen. If you enter the last
names in uppercase, it will distinguish the last names from a middle name.

The official agencies can probably do this too!

RE: [LegacyUG] Two quick queries

Hi John, Welcome to Legacy
My responses are threaded below
--

From: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
[mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of John Coppen

Hello, I've just changed from Reunion to Legacy and am on a steep learning
curve. Two quick queries (trivial in themselves but I'm sure there must be
answers):

1. My birth/death/etc locations which were formerly e.g. SE London have
transferred as Se London. Is there a means of correcting all such
occurrences in one fell swoop?

...Go to View> Master Lists> Location find the location you want to change
and edit. It will change all instances of that Location. If you notice that
you have two 'versions' of a location, eg 'S.E. London' and you want to
combine it with the newly corrected 'SE London' use the 'combine the
highlighted location..." box at the bottom of the Master Location screen.

2. When I click on the Family screen to see an individual's information, one
or more of the field names (e.g. Born, Bapt, in) [but not the information
contained therein] are sometimes in blue rather than the normal black. What
have I done to cause this?! What would I need to do to revert to normal?

... The field names in blue indicate that you have sources for those items -
it is 'normal' :-) and I find it's quite helpful, but you can turn it off.
Go to Options> Customise> Colours> In the line of buttons labelled 'text
colours:' click on 'contents' and change the colour to black.

RE: [LegacyUG] How to show a child not adopted in second marriage?

2007-09-21 Thread M Couch

Hi Rob

I leave the 1/2 siblings option turned on as I like to see as much of the
family composition as I can at a glance. It does look a little strange when
the couple are older at 2nd marriage and not likely to have children from
that marriage. Make sure you mother's father is designated as your
grandmother's preferred spouse then you won't see the
1/2 label when you scroll through the family view, it will only show when
the 2nd husband is selected. In any case, this is something that only shows
up on the screen, not in reports.

She was never adopted by the second husband, but Legacy is currently showing

To illustrate this relationship properly, would I unlink my mom from the
second husband? Or is there something different I should be doing?

Carol, which version of legacy are you using and is it Standard or Deluxe?

In general, if you go to options>customise>Data Entry and make sure "Don't

'standard format', without any customising the options.
The rest I don't have any experience of, but using the above option may

I simply use the expression "fathered a child with" if I don't know the
nature of the relationship. I use the words Male and Female, master and
housekeeper or Partner instead of spouse. I also check the box, top left
"this couple never married", then check how it reads in all the reports
(just try out 1 generation). Once you've decided how you want your report to
read, make sure you save the wording somewhere - for consistency.

RE: [LegacyUG] signatures & names

2006-12-09 Thread M Couch
As some have commented, a signature shouldn't be regarded as absolute proof
of literacy, I wouldn't rely too much on not signing a document as proof of
illiteracy either. Imagine someone in authority saying "Make your mark here"
or indicating the space with a small cross, or the situation where the bride
could read and write, but didn't want to shame her bridegroom who couldn't.
I have situations from the 19th century where the women in my family of
Norfolk Ag Labs were literate, they kept up the family correspondence, but
men were often illiterate. I also have at least one instance when a young
bride signed the marriage register with a cross, yet I have copies of
letters written by her both before and after the marriage.

RE: [LegacyUG] TreeDraw

2006-12-16 Thread M Couch

Yes, the excess commas can be removed in TreeDraw. The options have to be
set before importing but it's easy enough to use the "replace text" feature;
Enter , , in the 'text to be changed on import' and a
single comma in the 'replace with' box. Works well. I use the same feature
to shorten names of English Counties. Like most reports - preparation is the
key, I try features out using just a few generations from my database.

I tend to use charts to illustrate points (e.g. the relationships between
people mentioned in a Will) and have little need for very big "all in one"
charts, I need to be able to highlight individuals and add text and
pictures.

Someone asked if SuperTools from Wholly Genes (TMG) was as customizable as
TreeDraw - yes it is, but when I last tried it, it wouldn't import a Legacy6
file - I think the charting feature is now within The Master Genealogist
programme and SupertTools is being sold as an add-on for other programmes,
it doesn't look to have been updated for a few years.

It's an all or nothing switch on the calendar creator at present, you can
either select to have married surnames on or off, see under options on the
calendar report set up.

The way I dealt with this issue when I produced calendars this year, was to
create a new file, just for the calendar creator. That way I ensured that
the calendars were customised to suited the recipients! I, and a couple of
my cousins are known by our middle names; some people are known by one
knickname in one family and another by someone else. Some women have adopted
husbands names, some not.

Legacy doesn't usually use "married" names in reports.

Hi Jenny
I'm not clear about what you are trying to do. If you want give a child two
or more status 'labels', simply combine them as a new status and use that,
eg "stillborn twin". The new term is added to the search engine, so if you
want to search for all children with that status, you can find them.

The only caveat is Gedcom -check to see how it handles the new status if you
intend transferring your files to other's.

RE: [LegacyUG] Legacy Descendant Book report vs Narrative report

2007-03-18 Thread M Couch
Dear Kathy

You asked "Does anyone know of a way to get the Descendant narrative
> report to come out more clearly or is that just its nature?"
To have the Descendant Narrative report print with bulleted events: In the
DNR you need to go to Report Options, choose the Format tab and select the
large button labelled Event Narrative Format, then make sure that bullets
are selected.

You also asked about the codes in
"Anne married Robert PORTER,[xe PORTER, Robert (1822-1903)]
> son of John Davis PORTER [xe Porter,John Davis (1778-1859)]"
I'm presuming that you see these codes when you send your reports to a word
processor. The apparently 'useless' cross references are the codes inserted
into your document when you select the index generating option. You will see
them if you have the show/hide button selected in your word processing
software. Either turn off the index generating option in the report set up
in Legacy (if you don't want an index) or turn off the code revealing option
in your word processing software - the codes will still be there but you
won't see them.

Margaret

[LegacyUG] Descendant Report Freezing

2006-07-23 Thread M Couch
Can someone suggest a solution to a problem that I have just come across?
When I try to run a descendant report by going to "Reports" and clicking on
the Descendant tab, Legacy freezes. I can use the mouse and close the pop-up
box by clicking on the cross in the top right corner of the pop-up - this
action causes Legacy to close down immediately with no error messages. I
can't print descendant reports from the descendant screen either. All other
reports seem to run OK.
I'm using the latest version of Legacy Deluxe on Windows XP professional.
Any ideas
Margaret Couch

RE: [LegacyUG] Cancel from Notes loses input

2006-08-06 Thread M Couch
Hi Jack
I can only partly replicate this. Can't say I've noticed it before - I can
confirm that added or changed data disappears if I leave the Individual's
Notes by pressing the Esc key, but not if I exit by using the x to exit the
notes. There was no reminder notice, but I can't comment on whether this is
a new thing or not. I looked under Options, Customize, Other but can't see
an appropriate message you may have turned off under "message boxes".
Actually knowing the Esc button does this is helpful - sometimes I don't
want to keep the changes.
