[LegacyUG] Idea--an .fdb for background info? Plus "book" question.

2007-07-16 Thread Pat H

I'm trying something new (for me):
In addition to my two main family databases (paternal, maternal), I've
added two databases for background info for the two families (one for each
line): for example town, county, or church histories, geographical
information, etc. Of course, most of the information I enter goes into the
Notes section.
Ordinarily I enter a new subject by clicking "Add," "New unlinked
individual." Sometimes, however, I have a state as the father and towns,
independent cities and counties as "children."

I like having the background info readily available -- and used to put it
in under an individual -- but couldn't always remember WHICH individual!
And it's so handy just to click View Name and see all the topics available.

I'm not sure I'm expaining this clearly, but I'd love to have any
thoughts/ideas/suggestions about how you handle background info.

Also, a related question -- when printing a "book" from Legacy, is it
possible to combine two separate databases in any way?

Re: [LegacyUG] Idea--an .fdb for background info? Plus "book" question.

2007-07-17 Thread Pat H
I originally had the two databases combined but separated them for some
reason. Perhaps in part because I had two unrelated Price families and that
was a nuisance.

There is almost no overlap between the two families, I am an only child with
no children of my own so I think that keeping them separate will work very
well for me.

Since I can't make a book from two databases, I think when the time comes
I'll just transfer info from the background file into the notes section for
a particular individual.

Still it seems to me one ought to be able to intersperse background info
with family data.

Actually the only problem comes with page numbering, table of contents and
indexing. I guess I'll cross those bridges when I get to them!

Thanks for your comments!

Hi Pat,

I'm a newcomer to the Legacy environment, but have been a researcher for
40 years, and have worked with computers since 1965. The issue of keeping
separate paternal, and maternal databases has cropped up many times, and
is almost always a habit carried over from when genealogical records were
kept on paper. Computers can easily keep track of such distinctions, so
why go to all the trouble of keeping separate databases? Our descendants
will only combine the two databases after we're gone anyway.

Hi Pat,

That's an interesting idea - a database for background info.

However, I think for incorporation into a book, your background
information would have to be handled differently - like in the notes to
locations or attached to key individuals. But for reference, your idea
sounds good and obviously works for you.

Re combining two separate databases in a "book"

That's why I and many others suggest you have only one family file that
includes all your family. It's much easier to split a file for specific
purposes than it is to combine files.

It's also far easier to make sure that one database is updated than two
overlapping databases.

Maybe it's time you combined your paternal and maternal databases.

Pat,

From just after starting to use Legacy I put the married surname of a
woman in the AKAs as I realised the problem, so doing makes life easy. You
can also under the Index Tab>Options set it to show married women's
surnames, so you can then just look through the Margarets; see also my
very recent answer to Valeris re the Blogs on my website.

If none of these methods satisfy the reason for asking the question then
perhaps you could say specifically what you actually wish to do with the
information and we may be able to come up with an answer.

The reason I want it -- in this case-- is just to see whether the Margaret
Snider I found in the 1820 census is Margaret Maidename married to a Snider
& since I have LOTS of Margarets I don't want to look thru all of them to
see if one was married to a Snider. Make sense?

How does one find a married woman in a Legacy database when one doesn't
know the maiden name.

I have found a Margaret Lastname in the 1820 census.

How can I find a Margaret Maidenname Marriedname if I don't know her
maiden name?

I've got zillions of women with a firstname of Margaret and zillions of
people whose last name is the same as her married name.

Does this make sense??

Thanks for your help!

Hi Pat,
Currently the easiest way to do this is to use the Marriage List.
Order it by husband surname and then scan from the first Snider for a
spouse first name Margaret.

You can also set up the Index View to show spouses and scan that but that
doesn't remove the females and unmarried from your list of people to
consider.

PS please remember to snip the taglines from your messages - this message
had 3 sets so Ron also had forgotten to snip ;-)
also old messages or parts of them unnecessary for following the
conversation.

Re: [LegacyUG] Research guidance & Legacy entries

I have Post-It notes as well as word processors, but I'm trying to avoid
entering info 2x.

When I am in internet data via Research Guidance, I can click the edit
button for the one individual I've done the Res. Guidance on and enter info
but I can't get to other family members.

When I go back to the previous screen (i.e., Research Guidance screen
listing the 4 steps etc.) and click on the Family tab, my computer just goes
"clunk" and refuses to go to the Family (or any other view).

So could you tell me what to click on in order to get to other amily

You can shrink the windows and display both the data and Legacy, but it
does take some thought so that both remain where you can use them. Another
idea, mentioned here yesterday, is to use a post-it note. You can google
for a computerized version.

Re: [LegacyUG] Pictures

2007-07-29 Thread Pat H
I have ScanSoft Omnipage Pro 15 and it converts many old documents that I've
scanned into my computer quite accurately. Then I copy the conversion (I
use Word Perfect) as unformatted text, make any additional corrections and
save it to a file or copy it into Legacy notes -- or sometimes I just copy
it directly into Legacy notes.

As you go along you are training it to recognize characters better.

Pat

Hi Everyone, I am still working on my pictures that I have in my Legacy
Data File. I really appreciated all your responses on how to convert my
BMP files to JPG files.
I have another question that I hope someone can help me out with, some of
the BMP files that I have in my program are scanned images of death
notices that I found in local newspapers, what I would like to be able to
do is to highlight the write-up on these BMP or JPG files, then copy and
paste the information into either the death notes field or in the notes
section of death notice event that I add to the person who has died, is
this possible? It would certainly save a lot of manual typing.

Have you tried using Legacy in split screen view? Just click on View and
select Split Screen View from the pull-down menu. Don't open a family file

can then use the second screen to get to other people in the family file.

This IMHO is a big weakness in legacy. You can not change from one
window dialog to another. You have to close them. Thus you have to go
through this additional step of the copy paste/copy paste.

I talked with Ken about this. When you export to a new Family File you've
just created a *new* file so of course the program would recognize the
entries as new.

Of course, a new file wouldn't have a history list or bookmarks

I understand the frustration of losing this if the export is necessary, but
I also understand the concept that a *new* file has been created!

We don't recommend this process lightly and sometimes there is no other way
for the damaged file to be repaired.

Thanks for using Legacy.

Something that I "hate"... each time you export to a new Legacy file, you
lose the "Last Modified" information for each person. Your new Legacy file
will show your Modified Date and Added Date as of the day of your export.
In additon, the Imported information for each person will be Yes, so you'll
not have this clue as to where the person's data came from. Hopefully it

I notice that some genealogy websites publish the email address but
substitute the word "at" for the "@," which is supposed to make it more
difficult for spammers. As in johndoeataol.com.

I am in the process of removing e-mail addresses from my sources for
my Web site and Rootsweb database. I show the names of people who
e-mail me as the source and put their e-mail addresses in publication
facts. I have tested putting the e-mail address in double brackets,
and it appears to me that the double brackets remove the address from
Gedcoms and reports.

Re: [LegacyUG] Searching Notes - exporting Notes, Events to gedcom

2007-08-12 Thread Pat H

Susan, how does one export notes & events (only?) to a .gedcom?

From: "Susan Daily" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

Another option, Pat, is to export all your notes and events to a
GEDCOM and search that in a text file. Then where you find it, you can
go back to your Legacy file and locate it. Cumbersome, but it works.

Susan, how does one export notes & events (only?) to a .gedcom?

Click on:
File -> Export to -> GEDCOM File ->

Make sure to include private info, in case it is tucked in there.
Set: Produce file for GEDCOM 5.5.

Click on:
Customize: You can remove anything you don't want, leaving just notes,
but since you are doing a search, I wouldn't bother. (You highlight
items on the right hand list, then click " < Remove ".

If you do a lot of removing, and think you will search notes again, I
would save this export criteria by clicking Save List.

Click OK.
Make sure Record Selection at the bottom includes all records in file.

Click on top right, Select file name and start export. Open that file
in a text editor (MS Word or Notepad, for example) and do a search.

Does this work for you?
Susan

Re: [LegacyUG] About dates

2007-08-14 Thread Pat H
What do you do about sourcing info-- let's say you have a source for the
location but not for the date. How do you indicate it's YOUR guesstimate
and that the source is silent on the matter (since Legacy groups date &
location together as far as sources go for births, deaths, etc)?

From: "Mitch Mackrory" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

For example, once I have a child (any child) in a family, I assume it
is the eldest child and that the parents were likely married a year
prior to this. Let's say the child was born in 1856. I set the date
for the marriage as BEF 1855. I now have some information to do
further work on. I would record this with a Surety Level of 1
(marginal evidence). Let's assume that this helps me find the family
and I now figure out that there were two older children born in 1852
and 1855. I would now change the marriage date to BEF 1851 and I may
change my Surety Level to 2 (probable conclusion) if I am happy this
is the whole family. If this helps me narrow down when to look for
the marriage record, this is useful. Let's say I now find the index
record of the marriage record. I'll use UK terminology since that is
what I work on. I find an index record dated in the second quarter of
1850 and it looks good. I'll record this index info in the marriage
and likely change my marriage date to Jun Q 1850; possibly even
updating my Surety Level to 3 (Almost Certain Conclusion). When I get
a copy of the certificate, let's say there are witnesses that confirm
this is the right marriage. At that stage my marriage date changes to
14 Apr 1850 and my Surety Level might even go to 4 (Convincing
Evidence).

If I came across other evidence I may change my date to AFT or ABT,
but I always try to estimate a reasonable date as soon as I can and
then classify that assessment using the Surety Level system in Legacy.

Note that if my marriage date is BEF 1851 as an example, I will likely
start searching the marriage records from 1853 and work backwards for
20 plus years.

Also, once I have the marriage date fixed I move on to census records
(for example) to confirm that the decisions I have made are correct.

I hope that helps, Mitch Mackrory

If I look at the index I could have 7 John CULLODENS so it is helpful to
know that he was for example born before birth of first child and/or
that he died after birth of a child.

I tried putting all the different events of John CULLODDEN as events in
a family name but that did not work because when it was printed all
these events belonged to the same person so poor John CULLODEN died 5

I hope some one an understand what I am trying to say.

Re: [LegacyUG] Sourcing Question...

2007-08-14 Thread Pat H
I think it was on the laminated 4-page source citations by Mills that she
also put the name she had searched for in the documentation. I'm not sure
why that is necessary if you're including details as to page number, family
number, and if the name searched is the same as the name found.

And often I find people (e.g., other families) I wasn't even searching for
anyway.

Dawn:

Now *that's* a good reason. When reading films ordered from the Canadian
National Archives or the FHL I've often wondered if different copies of
the

same film could be better. From what I've seen so far, though, there's
nothing in Mills about recording the film copy number in the source
citation. Maybe that's something to consider. Of course, I'm only on p.
50
of 'Evidence Explained' and it's a big book so perhaps she's already
thought

of it.

Very interesting comment. Thanks.

Some years ago I ordered a census film from the FHL. The names on the
page I needed were obliterated. On another occassion, I was at the
Sacramento State Library where I looked at the same film. The page I
needed was beautiful and clear. I not only record the repository, but
also the line number, household number, and film details.
