Re: [LegacyUG] Reinstalling Legacy 7.0
Diane, I believe all you need to reinstall it is to know youf customer number from when you purchased Legacy. Either in the email when you purchased it, or easiest way if Legacy is still working is to look at Help > General Information tab. Then download the current version from Legacy's website, and after installing the free version, just enter the customer number, and you'll be back at Deluxe level. Re: [LegacyUG] Just Starting Out
Sherry, I don't download GEDCOMs found on Ancestry or RootsWeb, but I do sometimes accept hints and add information from other trees into my Ancestry tree on a limited basis - one or two generations at a time, and then do my due diligence to confirm the data. It's not unusual to find multiple public trees that have the same, erroneous data, that was just recopied by others. I usually try to find ones that have some source information listed. If I find something that is incorrect, I will usually try to contact the owner of the information and offer to collaborate. I enter everything manually into my Legacy database when I'm confident that what I have is real. Periodically - maybe twice a year, I might download a GEDCOM of my personal ancestry tree, and then compare it to my Legacy information looking for source information I may have forgotten to enter into Legacy, or where I may have mistyped something. Re: [LegacyUG] Just Starting Out
Sherry, You asked: "When I find online information on my family and perhaps family trees that have been submitted how do I handle that? Do I download all the information and then go about trying to verify it? " I would be careful with what information you enter into your database that you pick up from online trees that do not list sources, but I personally do include such information if it seems to help obtain clues. Two things I would suggest when you add information to your database is that: 1) You always source the fields you populate so that later you know where and from whom you recorded the information. There is nothing worse than to look at your database and wonder where you got a specific piece of information, especially if you find other records whose data conflicts with what you already have. 2) As I enter the source information, I make use of Legacy's Surety Level, and use either 1 (Marginal), or 0 (Have Not Decided Yet) to be able to later identify those entries that I'm not sure of. You can include the Surety Level when you print Source Citations in your reports. Once so entered, I then also look for supporting source documentation to verify/validate the information. Re: [LegacyUG] Omitting general & research notes
Kathy You can create your own custom Export List and exclude the sections you don't want to have in the GEDCOM.On the General Export Option Screen you will see on the bottom right area a "Customize" button. When you select Customize, you will come up with the default Items that will be exported. You can go through the right Column list and select the NOTES item and click the Remove button between the Items Available and Export these Items columns. This will remove both the General Notes and Research Notes from your GEDCOM. You can also remove MNOTE to remove the Medical Notes. If you have Events with Notes, you can also remove EVENTS from the Export, etc. When you have removed all of the items, then you can use the Save List button to save the Export List with an appropriate name. After you run the export, you can check the GEDCOM to see if you have removed everything that you wanted to. If not, then click Customize, Load List selecting your custom list, make the changes and save again. I use this all of the time to separate public from private information on my two websites. What Richard said is true, and I often will use [[ ]] to mark a section of Notes as private so they don't get exported/printed. And generally, my entire Research sections are prefaced with [[ so they don't get exported, or show up on reports. Note, I also use the Record Selection button on the GEDCOM Export Options screen to limit the export to a specific list of individuals that I have Tagged using Advanced Tagging. So if I'm exporting the 'John Smith' family, I first select the starting individual, and tag all ancestors, and then export only those tagged individuals (unchecking the appropriate boxes). Hope that helps. Re: [LegacyUG] Need help with report
If you are new to tagging, then I probably should have added that 1) you get to the screen to set the parameters by Search >> Find (or Ctrl F); and 2) once you put your criteria in you want to click the Create New List button. Then once the List comes up, you can select Print at the bottom of the search list, and pick the fields to report such as birth/death, etc and print the list. And if the List looks like something you want to save, then click on Options at the bottom of the list, and click Advance Tagging. From here you can pick a blank Tag Area - name it, and then set the "make changes to" that tag number and click Everyone in Search List. That will save the Search List and you can work from that list for reporting, etc. For example on Reports, you can click the Record Selection box at the bottom and pick Individuals with the Tag # you've picked. You might try searching with these parameters: Look for whom? Where to LookHow to Look What to Look 1) IndividualLivingEqual to No AND Second Condition 2) IndividualBirth Date Before 1850 AND Third Condition 3) IndividualDeath Date After1851 or other criteria you might want to try. [LegacyUG] Legacy and Windows7 RC
Has anyone tried running Legacy 7.0.0.90 using Windows 7 RC1 under VMware Fusion on a Mac? I've mostly been using Legacy on a laptop running Windows XP. Most everything else I do is on a Mac. I'm running a trial version of VMWare Fusion and Windows 7 Release Candidate. For the most part, Legacy is running fine. So far the only problem I've encountered is trying to bring up the Forms Center and Interview Questions under Reports > Books/Other. Unlike the other choices, nothing happens when I click on either of these two report types - all others appear to work. I've checked, and the sample forms are at C:\Legacy\Forms, and interview files at C:\Legacy\interview. I've reinstalled Legacy, and the problem persists. So I was wondering if this is just an incompatibility with how I'm running Legacy in this trial mode. Cathy, The Individual Report will give you a listing of all family and children by name, but not all of the other details. You might investigate using the Descendant Narrative Report (set for 2 generations) that is listed in the Books/Other tab. You probably can adjust the options on what to include to get what you want. Re: [LegacyUG] A book including everyone in my data base
As Dennis said, the Multiple Lines of Descent report may be workable for you. You could start with a Pedigree Report that shows the ancestors. And based for each top level ancestor marriage, you can lookup the MRIN value. And then list these MRINS on the Report Options page for the Multiple Lines of Descent report. This can easily become a multi-hundred page report. So adjust the report options to include only what you need - e.g.. don't include events, notes, etc. Also check the "Don't repeat duplicate lines" option on the Format tab - otherwise you will get many duplicate pages - e.g. the great-grandchildren will be listed four times - once under each great-grandparent MRIN. Re: [LegacyUG] Descendant View not working correctly
This is the way it has worked for some time, guess some of us just forgot how we set it up originally. But in cases of "his, hers, and ours" families, it only lists the descendants of the person selected - i.e. if you are running the report on the Father, you will see his children from both marriages. If the 2nd wife also had children from a previously marriage, these children do also show up on the family view (with 2nd wife) as ½ children under the 2nd husband. However, the children from the 2nd wife's first husband do not show up on a descendant report for the 2nd husband unless you also add the 2nd husband as a 2nd parent to these children - e.g. 'step' relationship. When written out, it seems convoluted, but it works. Perhaps Support can confirm that this is also the proper way to have "all" of the ½ children show up on the report.
