RE: [LegacyUG] User ID field

2009-07-28 Thread glove
How quickly we possibly forget but I don't recall being able to see both on
Family View unless you had customised labels. However you can still have
customised labels to show UserID and the RIN/MRIN still shows at the bottom
of the screen. On the Individual's screen you can choose UserID in the
bottom left field and of course the RIN shows at the top of the window. Did
you have it configured differently?

I've searched the archives and can't find that this has been addressed.

I have just updated to the version 7.0.0.100.  Now I've realized that
I have to choose between seeing the User ID and the RIN on the Family
View.  What?   I use both of these fields for two separate numbers,
not related, and can't understand why that option is no longer
available.  I'm thinking it was probably because the Temple and
FamilySearch info has been updated/added, but I'm a little distressed
at this new development.

Any chance that Legacy will rethink this and give us back the option
of seeing both of these numbers?

Go to Options > Customise > Data Format and select Letter Case of Surnames -
Initial Caps and click the Apply button. This will change all surnames to
Initial Caps in your file. If you want surnames in uppercase in reports
select Show SURNAMES in uppercase letters in the next section. You don't
have to enter surnames in uppercase in the Individuals Information form to
have them printed in uppercase.

If you don't want to change any options you could also untag (on the
Standardisation Tab in the Potential Problems report) "Surname entered as
all uppercase".

The same thing happened to me when I moved from v6 to v7 and I don't recall
it having been flagged up in v6. It turned out not to be as big a task as I
thought to remedy since there is no need to amend each person separately.
Just go to the master surname list and change each one there - I still had

I have a number of twins and one adopted child in my tree. They all show on
the family view with the words 'Adopted' or 'Twin' in parentheses after the
name/year. Is this the same issue? If so I must be doing something

Graham

Mark,

If you go to Options>Customise>View there is a check box for showing child
status, however in v7 at least it doesn't seem to do anything, not on my set
up at anyrate. It is not something I have used so I don't know what it
should do and there is nothing to assist in the Help Files.

To test it again I made my daughter adopted and nothing showed, and this is
not because I have columns of kids! Whether other symbols affect the output
I don't know.

I would suggest that perhaps Legacy could give a definative answer?

I wonder why the picture would be clearer depending on who you enter first!
The data you enter is the same and as your speaker noted, numbers are not
important, and this must work both ways. I have myself as the first person
and nothing is lost for either of my children. Perhaps the reference was to
a numbering system but since in Legacy this is under your control I don't
see the benefit of changing anything.

Hello,

I have always heard that it's best to begin entering data with yourself as
#1.
I've done this and know it is a practice followed on this list. That said, I
recently attended a genealogy conference where the speaker was strongly
suggesting that if you have only one child, that child should be entered as
#1 and by doing so, a clear picture of both parent's families would result.
Has anyone tried this?

I brought up the fact that starting with the child will change the "usual"
numbers seen on a pedigree form, but was countered with "Numbers are not
important."

The fact that I have one child is allowing me to consider this option, but
after entering hundreds of names into Legacy, I'd hate to have to start over
and I won't do it without the expert advice on this list. Does the speaker's
suggestion have merit? Any thoughts?

Thanks so much,

Graham,

The "XXX married someone" is used when there is a marriage entered but
no name for the spouse. When you add a spouse YYY it should have changed
to just XXX married YYY.

Find that family, open the marriage information and click on the Wording
Options tab. If you see married someone for the first marriage and next
married someone for subsequent marriages remove the someone from those
lines.

The surety of a source has no influence on the marriage wording.

What is the name of the font that is not working? The developers can't
see the problem unless they see this for themselves.

I can duplicate this, but only after changing my font to something that
will force that to occur. The programmers can't accommodate every font
out there. (Not even Word / Excel will accommodate every font
available!) It would be easier to stick with fonts that do work.

My first thought was something in the data fields but no, anything entered

On both version 6 and version 7, it should be if
the location is given (just date otherwise). So, I'd think it's a
problem with your data. Try editing the individual(s) to see what's in
the date and place fields and correct accordingly. Hint: neither should

[LegacyUG] V7 Sources

2008-06-14 Thread glove
I posted this 5 days ago and not yet seen it yet!

Maybe it is just because I set up my sources in a particular way but under
SourceWriter there is no option to strip HTML from the text/comments in the
source detail although it does exist in the master source definition text
tab. Would this be a problem for anyone else?

[LegacyUG] UK sources

2008-06-08 Thread glove
Most but not all of my sources entered in V6 are UK specific and include a
number of original birth, marriage and death certificates. I stress these
are originals and not copies. They are hand written, issued at the time of
registration and many have postage stamps affixed and official embossed
marks. These are my sources so when I use SourceWriter I can choose the
source type as 'Birth records' for example and the type of birth record as
'Birth certificate'. However the next question is 'Where is the certificate
held?' My view is that I hold it but at the very least a copy of it can be
found elsewhere. The only choices we have though are 'Held at local/county
level' and 'Held at state/provincial level'. Given the GRO setup in England
I don't see either of these as appropriate although I can see how either
might apply. Will there be any flexibility in the wording or user choice to
create new repository locations?

1) Default Marriage Wording
I expected this to say Husband & Wife (as in 6.0.0.*) and as indicated
in the Help information. It doesn't! It says Husb & Wife. Easy to fix
either globally or for an individual marriage, but the defaults should
be what would be expected.

I get "Husband" and "Wife" in ALL situations. Even when the "This couple did
not marry" box is checked. It is supposed to say "Male" and "Female"
according to the Options/Customise/View "Edit Default Marriage Wording"
choices. The reports etc are fine, but not Family View

I've reported this as a bug, along with a couple of other "niggles". But
basically I'd like to say how smoothly the whole thing went. Possibly
because I haven't been whingeing and whining about having to wait etc.

V7 really has lived up to what was promised, albeit a long time after we
initially thought it might come along. Other than this bug I've only come
across one NEW one - try setting relationships across a network! You need to
set up permissions on the machine with the database, but the help I got was
quick and accurate

RE: [LegacyUG] Printing Report Question - parents of spouse

Hi Ron
Tom's original query was "When I print the descendants report I would like
it to print the names of the parents for each spouse." I don't think he was
looking for a separate entry, just inclusion of the names. So I think we are
talking about the same thing but have discovered that it does not always
work.

Graham,

May we check that we are talking about the same thing?

I am referring to the Descendant Book Report and when I said that a Spouse's
parents are not available I meant as a separate entry. I know ( and I think
I said) that it will say "Jack Jones married Jane Smith daughter of John
Smith and Jane Brown".

RE: [LegacyUG] Printing Report Question - parents of spouse

2008-05-18 Thread glove
Hi Robert
Not so sure I have a problem - I only looked at this because Tom had a
problem. I'd not noticed it before since I have parents of spouses on all my
reports. Since I'm not sure what I configured to get them to show I thought
I'd try some things - this is when I noticed that changing the settings and
then back did not return my 'show spouses' setting unless I launched Legacy
again. I don't have a memory problem and it always returns to 'normal'. This
seems to be in stark contrast to what for example Ron has said that it is
not possible to show parents of spouses on descendant reports - I'm looking
at one now so I know it can be done.

Try this next time it happens. Try rebooting the computer. It may be a

fixes the problem.

By just using the the Descendant Report it is not possible to have an entry
for the spouse's parents as they are not descendants. With the Ancestor
Report, obviously, all the spouser's ancestors will be shown if one of the
children is used as the starting point.

Graham, I am not sure what you are getting at here. Subject to the above,
the parents' names are given in the sentence "John married Jane Smith
daughter of Jack Smith and Jane Brown". If this is not showing then I would
first try using the Reset button

Graham,

I have just checked and it works perfectly. Do you have Javascript enabled

If you hover over "Blogs" in the menu bar and click "Ron's Blogs" this takes
you to the item on using Legacy Search. In the left hand panel there is an
index/link to all the pages.

"Heaven bless the name collectors!"

I do something similar but I keep two separate Legacy files. One with my
direct relatives has a little fewer than 4900 names and another generic UK

57000, so some way to go yet). I started this in an attempt to eliminate
unconnected names and as a basis for future as yet undiscovered connections.

Subject: [LegacyUG] Default Dictionary

G'day

Can someone please tell me how to change the default dictionary? I live in
Australia and I want to change it so that the default dictionary will always
use Australian english all the time instead of US english. Every time I try
to use the spell checker it changes back to US english.

Thank you for reading this and for your help.

Regards,

RE: [LegacyUG] Freeman

2007-12-23 Thread glove
I do as all of my early family were freemen of Norwich - an essential title
in order to trade and very useful for confirming family links because of the
'son of a freeman' category and the early rolls that exist. Modern titles
are given as an honour and don't have much real genealogical value but I
would still include it as an event.

My great grandmother was married twice. If I choose the second husband as

brings them up on that small screen it doesn't show them when I close that

RE: [LegacyUG] Step children

2007-10-28 Thread glove
I have a similar situation where my 2nd great granduncle adopted three
children of his second wife's first marriage. I've recorded each child under
the birth parents AND have them showing under my 2nd great granduncle as
adopted (using the child status under children's settings). They only appear
once in the file but correctly show under biological parents and adoptive
parents. Each child has two sets of parents when you look at the parents
icon in family view.

You can produce a sortable or searchable list of all relatives of a specific
person (eg yourself). From the relationship report choose the csv file

I agree with Paul regarding phpGedView but a word of caution from my own

went fine but after many attempts to get the site to work I realised that my

waiting to find out if they plan to upgrade. PhpGedView will not work if you
don't have the right version that is compatible with your internet service

I often paste extracts of details from Ancestry and various other websites
into the "Source Detail Text" but sometimes have to remove the HTML code. I
find the easiest way is to paste into a text only file then copy again.

Is there any way of doing this without this extra step?

Notepad has a "Strip HTML" button but it also removes the carriage return /
line. So I still tend to paste via a text file.

RE: [LegacyUG] Adoption

2007-02-24 Thread glove
Changing the wording won't address 'the problem' that was raised at the
beginning of this thread. If someone married twice with children from each
marriage with the earlier children being adopted by the second set of
parents then the report won't pick up the correct parents of the adopted
children. True that the family unit can be phrased appropriately but at the
expense of not identifying the true parents of each child. If anyone has a
workaround for this situation I'd be grateful to hear it.

Yes it's a global change. Can't you think of wording that suits both?
I mostly use
Known children:
would you prefer something like
Children in this family are:

Which children are biological, which adopted and which fostered are
identified by the Child Status and/or Child-Parent Relationship -
depending on how you use those options.

If you can't find suitable wording, then you either use the RTF
option and edit the Legacy output or leave out adopted children.

I'm sorry but I can't see what the problem is.

Have you checked the report option to include Child Status and

That distinguishes adopted children from natural.

Hi Ron
I've often wondered how best to show this and agree with what you have said.
Have you figured out a way to present this more accurately in say descendant
reports? At the moment it seems that adopted children are presented in the
same way as natural children. Maybe we need additional wording options?

The only way round this that I can see is to use a prefix that is not
standard. What you might choose is whatever suits but ~ 1BC to 11AD seems to
work. I'm not sure though how any calculations would be handled.

The problem is not to enter 1 BC, or 11 (AD), but entering this as a
period. something like Between '1 BC and 11 AD' that is my problem

So the individual dates are no problem, but the period

A drop down came in, with the message "did you mean 11

Next input '11 AD'. Message came back, with variation.

Hi,

I am having a problem with entering a specific date period for an
event. The period is 1 B.C. till 11 A.D. I am using the Dutch version
of Legacy6 De Luxe (pre-release). I have tried entering in all
concievable combinations B.C. before, after, etc. with, or without
dots, 4 digit years. Every time I get an indication that the date
period is not recognised. Any suggestions?

RE: [LegacyUG] Pictures in a RTF book

2007-01-19 Thread glove
Hi Bonnie
In Word you can insert a page anywhere by placing the cursor where you want
it and selecting 'Break...' from the 'Insert' menu. You may find it is
easier just to type or insert additional text etc. and the text will
automatically adjust. You don't need to worry about page numbering etc. as
this is taken care of by Word itself.

To enter a TOC at the beginning select 'Field' from the 'Insert' menu and
choose 'TOC' (Note that Legacy tells you the style markers are Heading 1 and
Heading2). Similarly for the index at the end. Select 'Index' from the
'Field' menu as before. Legacy has already generated the entries - you can
see these if you turn on the paragraph marker in Word. All the entries
should be marked {xe.NAME}. If you enter any new people you want to appear
in the index you just need to include the same field with the right name -
copy and paste and amend is easiest. Again if page numbers change Word will
adjust the index - you can force this by right clicking on an entry in the
TOC or Index and selecting 'Update field'.

Hi Graham - for some reason, the last time I tried a 'trial' report the
picture did appear - why knows why it was not previously. Now, I have
one other question (or, rather, probably the first of many...)

I did the RTF report, and started with my grandson. His picture
appeared under the words 'first generation' I know that in Word I can
move the pictures around, and resize them, but had a question about
extra pages - above and beyond what was originally generated by Legacy.
If I add other pages into the report, how do I get them where I want
them, and if I am going to do that, then how would the page numbering
and the Table of Contents and Index be affected by additional pages? I
have used Word in the past, but am by no means an experienced user. As
I stated earlier, the Index and TOC options were probably one of the
main reason I switched over from FTM.

Thanks for the help
Bonnie

Hi Bonnie

When you choose the 'Scan a Picture' button from the individual's picture
gallery it fires up your scanner. The scanning software won't know where to
save the file so you have to specify it. When done however the picture
appears in the individual's gallery as you expect.

I have the same options as you for the report and pictures show in Word. Do
you have the view options in Word correct to show pictures?

I did this recently for several types of sources. I discovered that in
order for it to work, I had to associate the template with a person, so I
created an unlinked individual and assigned all my source templates to that
record. I named them all something like 0 template [census, birth, death,
etc.] so they would appear at the top of the source list. When I want to
add a new census, I choose one of the templates, make the necessary changes
and when I click "save" the Legacy prompt to save the changes to this source
or create a new source record comes up. I choose "create a new source".

Hope this helps

RE: [SPAM][LegacyUG] Source Template

2007-01-04 Thread glove
This sounds like you have created a master source and you are just asking
how to use it. If so all you need do is when you enter an event, in this
case a census entry, you need to select the source icon that shows on the
event screen. This brings up an assigned sources screen and from there you
choose the 'Cite a Master Source' button, find your 'census template', fill
in the details and you are done.

Subject: [LegacyUG] Geo database for England

Hello LUG from England,
Can someone answer a location place question please? I am
trying to find out the correct name for a civil parish in Essex.
Is it 'St Paul Wickham' or 'Wickham St Paul?' Legacy's geo
database does not have it and I would like to know the proper one
before adding it my locations.
Thanks,
Myrna

RE: [LegacyUG] viewing last used files

2006-12-23 Thread glove
I can't see one but you could always set the 'Starting Family File' to
'Always prompt.' (On the 'General' tab in 'Customise') and that way you
will be presented with a list of all the separate files as long as they are
saved in the default location.

Is there a way to increase the number of last used files? It is
presently set at 4. Although for most genealogists, that would probably
suffice, I have young blossoming genealogists at home. When they set
out on a research project, it is in a separate file until I review the
work. This is partly because I'm a slavedriver, but it also isolates
work that they accomplish for their personal goals without the clutter
of my whole database.

Thank you,
Dawn Crowley

I just purchased Map My Family Tree. I have a number of entries in Canada
that appear as incomplete because there is no county in my Legacy database.
When I use Geocode, I don't find a county for Canadian locations.

Is there an update to Geocode that gives the Canadian counties?

I am getting several email from people sending email to the Legacy User
Group, but for some reason, the From field and the To fields are both blank.
What is causing this? Currently I have my filters set up to detect email
containing at least one blank field (either From, To, or Subject), and
auto-delete it. I can redo the filters (but would take a few hours), but
would rather explore why I am suddenly getting email like this.

Thank you.

[LegacyUG] Problem with modified date

2006-12-15 Thread glove
I've only just noticed this but there appears to be a problem in the
modified date field (which I have showing on the family screen). This only
seems to occur if you do the following:

>From an individual that has at least one source open the individual screen.
>From there choose a field that has an entry with an assigned source and open
the source.
Close without changing anything and then cancel from the individual screen.
Nothing has changed but the date modified is updated.

This does not happen if you open a source directly from the family view
icon.

Can anyone else confirm that this is not just me?

Graham,

I'm sorry to report we're apparently having problems with our server. Ken
has been notified of the problem and is working with the hosting company to
get it resolved.

If you started the download and aborted it, you'll need to go to our website
at http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/DownloadUpdate.asp to update. I would
suggest using the "Download Full Setup" option.

What a terrible time for this to happen to us!

There is a first time for everything and I've just experience mine with the
latest update (118). In the middle of the update it seems there was a
problem downloading the legacy.exe file. No number of retries could correct
this although my broadband internet connection is otherwise working
properly. OK, things happen and I decided to wait till later. In the
meantime I have no Legacy program at all because the partial update
overwrites some of the files and now I have version incompatibility. This is
an obvious nuisance since now I can neither update nor carry on using the

Hi Graham,
The calculations are OK with Q dates but you have to enter them in
the correct format.

I can't see it in the Help but they calculate correctly when you use the
format
Dec Q 1933 instead of Q4 1933

When producing a "descendant book" I would like any blank spaces in the

Charleroi, Washington, , Pennsylvania. I have tried checking the

RE: [LegacyUG] Notes on Events

2006-10-01 Thread glove

Jenny

I have a number of these
as I’m sure others will and since you can enter as many sources as you
like for any event I always enter them as such – that way the text always
relates to the true source and in turn to the event.

Graham

Is it better to put the
text from eg. The Times newspaper in the Notes in the Events field, or in the
Text of Source once the entry has been sourced. I sometimes have a marriage
certificate and also a notice in a newspaper that I would like to refer to and
am not sure what is the best way to enter the details.

Any advice on this one?

Also, there is a feature in GENViewer to create a CSV file - however, it's
not apparent.

1) Start GENViewer
2) Go to the List or Highlighted Tab
3) Select the columns that you want to display/export to the CSV file
4) Press the keys together Ctrl-C

Step 4 will display a dialog box allowing you to create a CSV file from the
displayed columns.

Highlighting Tab allows you to just export a group of individuals. Also,
you can sort on any column before creating the CSV file.

RE: [LegacyUG] How can I add ID number

2006-09-10 Thread glove

Changing the display on the Family View to Tag 1 (or any
other) will only show the status of that tag. If you want to add the ID number
you have at least two choices – use the User ID field on an Individual’s
Information screen or set up an event. I’d go for the event since
presumably not all your relatives will have an ID number and you may want to
use that field for something more universal. Setting up the event is quite
simple.

Graham

Since 1950’s all South African citizens have a 13 digit identity
number. On the customised display, I have changed the last field to say ID
number. I have used what is known as TAG 1 to create the field.

I cannot find out how to add the data to each person’s file. Any
help.

RE: [LegacyUG] AKA woding in Book

I'm guessing the simple answer is no - it seems to be hard coded. But here
is a workaround

I created an event called 'Alt. Name' with just a description field and a
sentence definition of "Another spelling for [HusbMarriedSurname] was
[Desc]."

Just putting the alternate surname in the description will produce reports
with the required phrase. The downside
You have to remove AKAs - otherwise these still appear as you've noted and;
You have to turn on events for the report. This only looks good if you
delete the 'Individual Events:' sentence in the 'Wording 1' tab.
Graham

Is there any way to change the wording for the phrase that is used
when there is an AKA.

RE: [SPAM][LegacyUG] Fam. Members by Generation

2006-08-06 Thread glove

If you get no other replies here is a
rather messy way…. I did think it would be much easier but it is early
and maybe I’m not thinking straight!

From Legacy choose the person at the start
of the branch and Set Relationships from the Tools menu

Choose the Relationships report and create
a CSV file

Open this file in Excel and turn on Auto
filter and then for each generation:

Choose ‘custom’ from the
relationship column and set to ‘Begins with grand’ or ‘Begins
with ‘7th great’ etc.

Select the relationship column and use ‘Find’
from the edit menu and search for each ‘level’ ie “grand”
or “7th” and click on ‘Find All’

At the bottom of the window is the total
number of entries.

Repeat five times and you have the numbers
for your remaining generations.

Hi LUGies,

I would like to make a count of each blood-line family

generation.

Is there anyway I can use Legacy to find that information
and crank out the numbers?

For example: The way my family line begins:

1st Gen. - original couple

2nd Gen. - 2 children

3rd Gen. - 25 grandchildren

4th Gen. - 81 great grandchildren

5th Gen. - It's a royal pain to count!

6th Gen. - ARGH!

7th Gen. - Yowsers!

8th Gen. - A bean-counters dream

9th Gen. - That's where I fit in, and it hurts just thinkin'
about it!

Is there anyway that Legacy can "do the math" and
count the family members for each, successive generation?

Really appreciate all the insight you folks have! Please
tell me that Legacy can do the counting!

So sorry to bother you again!

I don't think there's a way to do this easily, but just thought I'd ask!

I want to make a list of Paternal line and spouse, down to me -- just
husband and wife (with dates and maybe pob and pod), each ancestor and
spouse in order.

e.g. John Stag (dob-dod)-Jane Doe (dob-dod)
John Stag, Jr. (dob-dod)-Mary Deer (dob-dod)
Henry Stag (dob-dod) - Ann Hare (dob-dod)
Zachary Stag (dob-dod) - Juanita Moose (dob-dod)
Husband of me (dob-dod) - Me (dob-dod)

Just the direct lineage from ancestor to me (actually I want to do this for
a cousin) with dates and maybe locations.
I want to do this for each ancestor down -- no extra spouses; no siblings.

I don't see a way to do that, except manually-- or I guess I could do a
descendant list and save to a text file and go thru and delete everybody I
didn't want?

Or is there a way to tag everybody in the direct lineage? I know how to get
them bolded--is there a way to get the bolded ones tagged?

I looked for Focus Groups in Help but found nothing.

I feel as though I am really pestering the group !

I do want to say that by and large I really like Legacy and I REALLY
appreciate all the help I've received so far!!

RE: [LegacyUG] How do you record someone acting as a witness? Changes in County boundaries?

2006-06-23 Thread glove
I do something similar for marriages. I created a Witness (Marr) event and
put the name in the description and use the notes for the relationship so my
sentences read 'abc (brother of xyz) was a witness to the marriage.'
Because most of my witnesses are also relatives I created a Marriage Witness
(Individual) event for the individuals - here the description contains the
two parties to the marriage and the sentence reads 'abc was a witness to the
marriage of xyz and def on date.' Both event definitions contain the date.
I've yet to find a replaceable field that would pull in the names of other
people in the file.
On wills I've not really had the need but if I discover some more I might
think about creating 'Executor' and 'Executrix' events.

I haven't come to entering precisely that type of witness yet, but I
have recorded a few instances of people being witnesses at weddings.

In those cases, I use an Event named Witness (can't remember now if that
is a standard Legacy one or if I added it) and in Description I write
something like "Marriage of John Smith RIN to Jane Brown RIN."

In the case of someone witnessing, say, a Will, I would use the Event
Name Witness and Event Description would be "Will of John Smith [RIN]".
(In that case I've put [RIN] because John Smith may or may not be an
individual in my Family File.)

Date and Place would, of course, be the date and location when/where the
witnessing took place.

I'd just like to do a little sanity check and ask, what do you do with
alternative dates in Legacy. Let me explain.

Lets say two different sources show a conflicting birth date. I can not
confirm which is correct. Do I store one or other in the "born" field? And
what do I do with the other date. Currently I enter the alternative date in
the birth notes. BUT I also store other information in there and It gets
messy when I start adding lots of sources to ALL my birth notes.

Am I missing a trick? How do others store alternative dates/information.

HURRAY!!!

Seems that Ken's changes have FINALLY let me back onto the group. I have
been blocked from the list for a long, long time and it was so frustrating
seeing lots of great topics and not being able to reply. Thanks Ken for
making the switch to the new server.
