RE: [LegacyUG] Windows 7

2009-11-05 Thread marilyn cebrowski

Yes, my old computer actually crashed the day before the release, oct. 21st and
my son got me a new computer that came with windows 7. I had to use the
on-line download and open the delux as my cd would not load it and I had errors
printing and stuff. support got back to me the next day with easy to follow
directions and it came up perfectly with my backup. It has worked GREAT !!

I searched through the archives and the only answers were on the beta release
of Windows 7. Now that is has officially been released has anyone try Legacy
with Windows 7 yet? Any problem areas or should be a smooth transition. I will
be installing it on a new system next week.

RE: [LegacyUG] Family History Center

2009-08-15 Thread marilyn cebrowski

I am a family history volunteer, consultant, LDS member. each of us has a
specific time that we work, mine was always 10:00 a.m. till noon every friday
and usually there are 2 to 4 volunteers there. One of our dear sweet elderly
volunteers was very much against using any program but PAF and would even get a
bit hostile at times. I would usually show the visitor the three or four
computers running Legacy so they could use those. One thing you might do if it
is a small family history center with only one or two workers is to go at a
different day / time and see if someone else is there. We had a lady on
Wednesdays that we all referred to as the Legacy person and was always
recommended for people with a lot of Legacy questions !! hope this helps.

This is -almost- off topic, to me.

I took a copy of my Legacy family file with me to our local family
history center. The librarian there had never heard of it- and pushed
PAF as hard as he could, trying to shoot down Legacy every way he could.

It is easier to cooperate than to fight g- so I have a question
please: Has anyone converted from a Legacy family file to a PAF
family file, used that file at a FHC, and when you get home, import
back into Legacy all right? How do you convert safely? That is, not
lose any events that are not standard to PAF but are all right with Legacy?

 Thank you.

RE: [LegacyUG] 93-page pension file - handle?

2007-09-10 Thread marilyn cebrowski

Actually , I would and have used close to 45 page protectors for some large
hard-copies as a safty measure to protect the papers. Infact, I only put
one page per sheet protector. Then I have scanned all the documents so I
have a copy in case the original sheets become old and hard to read, which
would not be in my life time, as I am getting up there in age. These kinds
of family documents are treasures to the families they belong to and I guess
in my way of thinking, nothing is too complicated to protect my treasures !!

How do others on the list handle the filing of a 93 page complete pension
file? I am trying to put everything in notebooks, with sheet protectors.
This is obviously not going to fit that format. Although none of the
original sheets appear to have been legal size, the person at NARA who
copied the file for me put it on legal paper. I don't use legal-size
folders

(petty prejudice on my part).

Surely no one would use 45 page protectors?

Thoughts welcomed, in spite of the fact that it is a lame question; I think
the only answer must be file it in a legal size folder.

I also like to set the Living Indicator default to NO. This will set
everyone I enter in my database as deceased automatically. Since I deal
with more dead people than alive it is easier for me to remember to change
the living status to Living than to remember to change it to deceased. I
just hate it when you have someone living in the 1500s without dates and
they show up as living when you upload them to Rootsweb. Changing this

Re: [LegacyUG] Buried or Cremated

2007-03-28 Thread marilyn cebrowski
I was very glad to find out how to set the option for cremated in the
Legacy program that I use and have used, (and recommend often to people who
want a great genealogy program). It seems that the cremated choice is
becomming more popular and since I include and record many lateral lines
(brothers and sisters and their children) in my family genealogy file, i was
happy to get this info. because many of the more recently departed
realatives have chosen this option.

I subscribed to this user group a couple of months ago and have learned
tons on how to use the genealogy software for the legacy program. I have
saved and printed and included in a notebook many of the solutions or
instructions that pertain to my use of the program. I, unlike some, wish to
say a huge THANKYOU for having this group! Even though I have the book and
have done many of the tutorials, this user group has been much easier for me
to understand on how to do the many things I never could figure out ! !

Again, THANKS to all of you, I have seldom even needed to ask a question as
I can just scan down the subject line in the many, many, wonderful emails
that I receive on a daily basis and find the particular subject that I
also need more info. on.

I look forward to being with this group as long as it is available ! !

For what it is worth (and I am not complaining; merely reporting); I have
signed off of the LUG because so many of the items do not include things
directly related to Legacy use and most do not even mention the word
Legacy. I continually deleted most of the items (and than need to dump
tons of waste basket items resulting).

I realize that somehow I suckered into the trend when I offered the option
of using Ahnentafel system for organizing (I still think that is a very
viable system because it covers ID of ancestral, descendant, and the
generation level all at the same time, but here I go again off-task
also.tempting).

Anyway, our new LUG meeting at Terre Haute, IN is finding the same problem
I mention here and are very hesitant to subscribe for this reason.

I must repeat that I am so very proud of the great program and the great
support that Legacy assures. Frankly, the LUG online concern is the first
and only function that has been the slightest below top quality and
satisfaction. Thanks. Loran

RE: [LegacyUG] Error 3021

2007-02-19 Thread marilyn cebrowski

Martha,
I had that problem for several months a long time back, but it seems to have
disappeared with the newest up-date Do you have the newest build date?
when the blank screen finally comes up i would just enter the info and go
on. sometimes it came up when adding a new Husband to the file and i would
just keep hitting the button till the entry screen came up. I have seen it
on other peoples computers also. But I think that problem has been fixed as
I haven't seen it since the latest update came out. Hope this helps, (its

Re: [LegacyUG] Ancestor Book Report problem

2007-02-16 Thread marilyn cebrowski
are you actually adding an ancestrial book report to your publishing
group? or is it an ancestor report ? when you are doing the book after
you highlight it, a screen comes up with two choices at the bottom: change
person... or edit settings... Go to the EDIT Settings. when that screen
comes up there are file tabs at the top go to the thrid one HEADING
LAYOUT then you can type in the name that the program is printing. When i
did it the first time , i got a different name written on my report, but the
report was for the correct person only i had to go in and re-write the
name. Don't know if this is any help, I am learning how to do the
publishing center and kept having the wrong name showing up on printed lists
even though the correct data was on it.

No, in my case, each section of the book I'm publishing should be for
Fisher A. Deming. I should have 'The Pedigree of Fisher A. Deming' (I
don't have the problem you're seeing as my pedigree is only one page), 'The
Ancestors of Fisher A. Deming' and 'The Descendants of Fisher A. Deming.
But for some reason, my ancestor report, though all the proper data is
included, it is being titled The Ancestors of Rufus Presley, while Rufus
Presley isn't associated with this report in any way.
He was my default individual, where the program opened every time I
launched it, but I have since changed that to be Fisher Deming, yet the
report still gets titled with Rufus' name every time I generate it. The
ancestor report generates fine if I do it by itself, it only gets
mis-titled

when I generate it as a part of a book in the Publishing Center.

[LegacyUG] photos question

2007-02-11 Thread marilyn cebrowski

I have a really dumb question, as I am older and not nearly as computer
knowledgeable as the rest of the group. I have some photos in legacy that
i have been adding to individules, when i made a gedcom and took it to my
daughter in laws computer and she loaded it into her legacy as a seperate
file, their were not any picutures in it. She seemed to think the photos
are only linked and that legacy gets them from the persons computer hard
drive so they only show on your own computer. She is a new user for legacy
and not very good with computers either. Any kind of really SIMPLE
explanations would be great thanks

Toxanne,

No there isn't. But I wouldn't bother because (a) you would loose
definition by doing so as neither the gif nor the jpg are lossless and (b)
if the definition is poor it will not improve it. It can be done using a
variety of software of which Irfan View is just one.

Thanks to all for the suggestions. I guess Legacy really can display the
LDS events, and I was worried about that before.

Just FYI, it looks like you can only set options in the descendant view if
you have the deluxe version. Also, you cannot disply LDS events in the
pedigree view. Is this right?

Thanks,
Melanie

Melanie;

I don't know how many people already answered this, but here is what I did.

My Legacy file starts (and I do most of my work) in Family View. You can
change the information displayed for the people in the main view (the
husband/wife view) by clicking on the word born (or any of the other
labels). I changed from showing the cause of death to showing the LDS
symbols. That took care of them. But I also wanted a quick way to see if
their children had work done. So I modified the descendant view
(descendant tab). The options button allows you to add columns to the
display (again I added LDS symbols). You can also customize the display (I
set it to show 2 generations). Now I can quickly tab here to see my family
group and what work has been done (or not done!).

I hope that helps. Legacy is a wonderful program and I'm always finding
new things that it can do. I don't think you'll be unhappy should you
decide to switch over.

I am currently deciding whether I will buy Legacy. One thing I like
about PAF and RootsMagic is that you can quickly view LDS ordinances from
family/pedigree/descendant views without actually clicking on the
individual's record. Is this available in Legacy? If so, how do you do
it?

  Thanks,
