[LegacyUG] Attached Files

2007-07-30 Thread Don Brown
What is going on with the Group.

I have always thought that sending attachments was a huge no-no for the
group but lately there seems to be a rash of attachments appearing. I was
under the impression that people that failed to adhere to the guidelines of
etiquette were going to be unsubscribed without notice. Perhaps the people
at Legacy can clear this point up for me so I can decide whether continue
without attachments or unsubscribe if attachments are being allowed.

My apologies to Don and the rest of the group. That was not an
attachment that was included with my message but an INCORPORATED
picture of the EVENT screen; incorpirated within the message to
help people understand better what I was trying to describe. I
had no idea that it would come across as an attachment or I would
not have sent it. And yes, I had my email set as "plain text".
Mea culpa.

I was not referring to you alone as last week there were two other postings
with attachments.
Any time you attach anything, picture, text file, html file or anything, it
arrives at everyone's mail box as an attachment.
You could put it on a web page and then include the web address in the
email.

RE: [LegacyUG] Attached Files

2007-07-30 Thread Sherry/Support
Don,

Attachments are not allowed, but unfortunately when we switched servers, we
weren't given the option to remove attachments nor can we convert HTML to
plain text (we ask that users not send message in HTML either). We just
have to trust that the listers will follow the LUG guidelines.

It would be helpful if every new subscriber - heck even the old ones - would
go to our LUG Etiquette Guidelines and review them. There's a link at the
bottom of every email.

Thanks for using Legacy.

Don, and any other interested parties,

Not to be hard-nosed, but there is a difference between "included
within" a message and an "attachment" to a message. I was able
to cut and paste a picture of the EVENTS screen INSIDE the
message (not as an attachment to). In fact, if you take a good
hard look at my message, you can see the gap where the picture
was. There was NO attachment. Somehow, the software on the LUG
interpreted the inserted picture as an attachment. I'll let you
computer geniuses figure that one out. So Sherry, we might need
to add this escapade to the Etiquette info.

And as I said before, yes, I did make certain I was using Plain
text.

And now we know another quirk of the Users Group setup. 'Nug

Hello Pat,

I can understand you thought were posting in text, but if you include an
image, you are *not* posting in text, but in html. Plain text means just
that - text - and nothing else. Many email clients will add images as an
attachment. It's just a shame that the new Legacy host does not allow the
requisite filtering.

RE: [LegacyUG] Attached Files

2007-07-30 Thread Sherry/Support
Pat,

Graphics cannot be included in plain text messages - it just won't happen.
You can include them in HTML messages, however we do not want users to use
HTML either because the size of an HTML message can be considerably larger
than the same message in plain text, depending on the inclusion of pictures,
backgrounds, animations, etc.

If you copied and pasted into the message, then it problem "jumped out" when
you saved it and attached itself I don't know which email program you're
using and how it works, but I know when I try to paste a graphic in a plain
text message, it just won't happen!

Please remember that we have users who are still on dial-up, have limited
storage space for email or even pay by the minute for downloading their
email. Let's all be considerate and DO NOT use HTML or RTF email with
graphics included of any kind and DO NOT attach anything to your emails.

Also, turn off return receipt request and the .vcf option.

Thanks for using Legacy.

2007-07-30 Thread Jim Liddil
No there is not a difference. An image is interpretted as an
attachment in plain text mail. This is the way the e-mail standard
works. You attached a jpg. You can not include images in plain text
mail. ASCII won't support it.

It always fascinates me that someone makes a mistake and people on the list
complain so much that there is far more time and bandwidth wasted chastising
them than the original message took up. Why can't folks just let Sherry

My sentiments exactly!!

More people get bent out of shape over what are mostly honest mistakes by
newbie's or not so new users. Be a little tolerant and cut them some
slack. Repeat offenders should be dealt with accordingly, but to come
down on some of these mistakes gives the list a bad rap IMHO!!

Fine! So long as they are prepared to pay me for the excess crap that I
have to download. My ISP charges me by the Mb. A jpg can easily occupy
400Kb. One of those and a clown who doesn't trim properly and that's

2007-07-30 Thread Paul A.
If someone has to pay for the time online or the amount of data downloaded,
then limit the size of emails you can download. Some of the software
clients have that capability. Then you won't have to get so upset when a
newbie or even a "not so newbie" accidentally forgets. Take actions into
your own hands for a change.

There is no need for attachments on Yahoo Groups as there is a facility for
files to be placed on the groups' sites.

If someone has to pay for the time online or the amount of data downloaded,
then limit the size of emails you can download. Some of the software
clients have that capability. Then you won't have to get so upset when a
newbie or even a "not so newbie" accidentally forgets. Take actions into
your own hands for a change.

Fine! So long as they are prepared to pay me for the excess crap that I
have to download. My ISP charges me by the Mb. A jpg can easily occupy
400Kb. One of those and a clown who doesn't trim properly and that's
another tick on the metre.

For Plain Text in Outlook Express for *all* emails to a particular address

Re: [LegacyUG] Attached Files

2007-07-31 Thread Gary Templeman

Helen,

Wendy and Jack already answered most of your questions. When any email is
sent, it has to have routing information. Consider the full header sort of
like a mailing address, return address, and information about what language
and type of script is being used.

Your full header looks like this:

Received: from mail.legacyfamilytree.com ([209.139.208.142])
 by sccrmxc19.comcast.net (sccrmxc19) with ESMTP
 id <20070731203146s1900iphjee>; Tue, 31 Jul 2007 20:31:46 +
X-Originating-IP: [209.139.208.142]
Received: from sccrmhc12.comcast.net ([63.240.77.82]) by
legacyfamilytree.com with MailEnable ESMTP; Tue, 31 Jul 2007 13:26:50 -0700

As you can see, there is a lot of technical stuff that most people never
need to worry about. Pertaining to your second question, you will need to
refer to the help file for Outlook or top someone else on this list as I do
not use Outlok and cannot give you specific information. In Outlook Express
there are settings that control the format for sent messages for email and
newsgroups, and there is an additional option to "Reply to messages using
the format in which they were sent".

If I had that option checked, then even though messages *I* created would be
in plain text, if I received an HTML message and clicked reply, it would
stay as HTML.

Hi Gary,
Two newby questions for you. When I am looking at your header, From: Sent:
To: Subject: I am still confused as to how to find out what program is used.
I have been wondering what my progam is so your comment was timely and will
be useful. What is x-mailer? Where do I find it? Does Office XP have this
feature?

Next question: when I reply to this or any other e-mail from the mailing
group, am I replying in plain text because your e-mail is plain test or must
I attempt to reformat each reply as I send one? How would I do that?

If you ever want to know what program someone is using, simply look at the
full header. The x-mailer will state the program. Pat is using Microsoft
Outlook Express 6.00.2900.3138.

I don't know which email program you're
using and how it works, but I know when I try to paste a graphic in a plain
text message, it just won't happen!

Thanks for using Legacy.
