Re: [LegacyUG] How do I source a "Family Tree" found on Ancestry.com & Error 91

2009-03-12 Thread Janis L Gilmore
The trick is to evaluate all sources on these three bases:

1. Original or derivative source? (Digital or microfilm image can be treated
as original.
2. Primary or secondary information. Was the record created close to the
time of the event? Was the informant involved in the event personally?
3. Direct or indirect evidence. Does it say that John Does was born on this
specific date? Or does it say that his sister was born in X year, and her
brother, John Doe, was born three years later?

A primary source might be of less value than a secondary source, depending
on the circumstances. It is up to you to evaluate them on the continuum of
all three standards.

Everything that tells you something is a Source for that something which
it tells you. So a Family Tree is a Source, a newspaper clipping is a
Source, a letter is a Source ...

BUT there are reliable Sources and unreliable Sources and there are
grades of reliability - hence the Surety Level which Legacy provides. I
see no reason why a Family Tree or website should not be used as a
Source if it's the only Source I've got at the moment, but I would give
it a Surety Level of 0 or 1 probably.

[LegacyUG] How do I source a "Family Tree" found on Ancestry.com & Error 91

2009-03-12 Thread Ann Parsons
Carolyn,

I can think of a primary source that has erroneous data. When an ancestor of
mine applied for a Social Security Account Number in 1937 he stated he was
born Burley ID. I have an affidavit that he was born Malheur County, OR. I
have a census where he is born in Italy. I figure if someone checks my
sources they can decide for their selves what to believe. I go with Italy
until I learn something new. I use alt birth for the other two.

Another subject. I am still getting Error 91. I try backing up, get Error
91. I go back in and flog the check/repair until I run out of patience and
exit the program. When I go back in most of the time I can do a backup. I
just tried doing check/repair 2 times, exit, go back in and I could back up.
When Error 91 first started at 116 it slowed down. Each time I do
check/repair 116 got slower until it stopped at 116. Now it stops a long
time at 116. I have been documenting what I have entered in Legacy and the
steps I go thru to get it to back up. Have a nice little pile of this. I
hope you are no longer getting Error 91.

Unless the family tree has RELIABLE sources, it is just clues. Isn't the
Garden of Eden a in YOUR database? Ha-ha. Primary sources are
birth/death/marriage certificates and such. Compilations, histories, and
such are secondary sources - reliable if they have used primary sources.
There are too, too many now infamous genealogies that have been discovered
to not only to have confused and comingled families, but also to have
fabricated info. This is not recent; it was often a matter of survival in
medieaval England to prove connection to a powerful family. Historians and
scholarly genealogists are still finding errors in many English county
Visitations which depend on the accuracy of the individuals questioned.
Property also descended by birth, and there are countless documented cases
where it is known that people...LIED...in order to get the property, land
being the only source of wealth back then.

So, if the family tree is well sourced with RELIABLE sources, it would be a
tertiary source.

But, in the final analysis, this is YOUR genealogy, and you can call
whatever you want a source.

Re: [LegacyUG] How do I source a "Family Tree" found on Ancestry.com

2009-03-12 Thread Diane Murach
I would source a family letter and newspaper clippings. I'd try to get a copy
of the actual letter or newspaper clipping if I wasn't seeing a digitized
version. To me, this is separate situation from donated family trees and
published family histories.

Actually based on the number of errors I've been able to prove wrong from
letters, family Bible entries and obituaries, I tend to look at them as clues
also. Sometimes it may be the "only" piece of information you have and you
have to decide, if it seems probable or not and try to back it up with
additional census records, gravestone and more.

I agree. A family tree is a set of clues, not a source.

I Don't source ancestry, I put an online family tree under notes with
the URL and then I set out to prove or disprove it.

Since far too many Ancestry trees are complete works of fiction, I too would be
very hesitant to enter the data into Legacy, however, if for some reason I did
do so, I would use the Internet > Database template.

It sounds as though you have found a Private Member's Tree rather than a
Public one. For Public Members Trees you should be able to see a tree
and in both cases there should be a link to contact the Member, unless
it's a Private tree and they don't wish to be contacted. In that case, I
would hesitate to use the information as a Source in my tree!

For Family Tree information from Ancestry I use the Website>Database
template giving "X Family Tree" as the Database Title, "Ancestry" as the
Website Title. In the Comments field I write something like "grateful
thanks to Joe Bloggs for granting me permission to cite this source" and
if appropriate, some information to show how Joe Bloggs is connected to
a person on my tree.

I use the same template in much the same way for tree information from
people's own websites, except that I use their details and those of
their site in place of the details for Ancestry.

Vicki,

I have used these Family Trees from Ancestry. I use the Family Group
Sheet template in Source Writer. If the author's name is given, I
will use it. If not, I use the Ancestry user name that is posted with
the Family Tree. I choose to use "online images" since that is where
they are, even though they're not scanned images, such as census
pages.

I also put in a comment explaining why I've used this family tree,
even if there are no sources. The last one I used included some of
the same family pictures that I have in my collection, so even though
I don't know the author, I'm reasonably certain that our families are
related!

Hope this helps,
Dede Holden

IMHO, with no author or contact information, this "Family Tree" is worthless
unless you have external reasons to give it credence.
If you want to pursue it, I suggest making a separate file for these
Ancestry Trees. Do your own research, verify the information, and source it
appropriately when you move it into your own Family File.

I don't use the Source Writer myself. It's just another thing to get in
sync with. Right now, it's easier not to. If there's any kind of
notation at all on the tree that you found, I'd put that in. I have
some similar 'unknowns' and I put them under a general category. For
instance, Ancestry World Tree Project: unknown. If there's no
information given, what can you say?
