RE: [LegacyUG] Surname formatting part II

2007-11-27 Thread Barbara Ford
By the way, just as a matter of information, Michele's discovery is exactly
how my Dad's nickname, Red, got in the surname field. His nickname was in my
FTM as an AKA. When I imported from FTM, all given name AKA's were put in
the surname field. Mystery solved. [Then, I had to apply the lesson that
even though I corrected each individual file, once entered into a surname
field, the master list of surnames would still have it, until deleted from
the master list.]

I am going through the master list of surnames and correcting the formatting
as it was suggested and it is working very well but in the process I have
found an interesting glitch. Apparently when I imported my FTM file all
AKAs were automatically put in the surname space! So, when added only a
first name AKA in FTM (like Polly) it transferred over to the surname spot.
I wouldn't have readily noticed this if it weren't for me reformatting my
surnames take out the all caps. Very interesting! So, I am fixing both
issues at the same time.

Re: [LegacyUG] Surname formatting part II

2007-11-23 Thread Leon Chapman
Barbara:

The way that I do most of my Nicknames is as follows:

First & middle name: Leroy Ervin
Last name: Chapman
Nickname: Roy

My data entry is:
First & middle name: Leroy "Roy" Ervin
Last Name: Chapman

There is an option in reports under the format tab in descendant
reports to Use quoted names for narratives. Legacy will then use the
full name once and then use the quoted name there after in your report

Hope this helps.

Re: [LegacyUG] Surname formatting part II - SOLUTION

2007-11-23 Thread Ken

Hi all,

I also just recently transferred over to Legacy from FTM but had no problem
at all with AKAs.They were all slotted in the right spot following
importation through GEDCOM.Perhaps you didn't have the AKAs recorded in
the right place in FTM. They should have been placed in the Lineage /
Adopt section as there was a specific spot for AKAs (nicknames) in that
section.

As far as where to place them in Legacy, I believe if you bring up the
Family image page you will find a display of icons just below the persons
name. Select the one with 3 heads.

Hope this helps.

Ken, in Ottawa, Canada

I can find the alternate names, but I don't have a clue about the proper
format for nicknames in Legacy :-). I know I don't like the Alternate Name
wording when applied to nicknames i.e. "Another name for Jacob was
Wildcat." I tried adding a nickname event so I could control the words but
that prints under "Noted events in his life were:" which seems a little
stiff for a nickname. As I recall, I had problems with the way FTM handled
nicknames also. I wish the programmers would just provide a real nickname
slot. I have a lot more nicknames than I do true alternate names.

Thanks--workedso now that "begs the question"--what is the proper
format

for recording nicknames in Legacy. For example, if someone was named May
Elizabeth Scruggs, but she was always called "Mayme", in Family Tree
Maker,
I entered her name as May Elizabeth (Mayme) Scruggs. Is that not the
proper
format in Legacy? I know about the AKA place and was using it for names

might be found under when researching (rather than just a place for the

I suggest you go to index tab, go to options, choose
Include AKAs in list. scroll throuth the whole list,
giving quick glance at each name. If there are
problems, most will 'jump' out at you. A big database
may take a while, but any other way is even more
tedious.
Either fix as found or tag for later, depending on the
quantity if fixes.

RE: [LegacyUG] Surname formatting part II

2007-11-22 Thread Barbara Ford
Thanks--workedso now that "begs the question"--what is the proper format
for recording nicknames in Legacy. For example, if someone was named May
Elizabeth Scruggs, but she was always called "Mayme", in Family Tree Maker,
I entered her name as May Elizabeth (Mayme) Scruggs. Is that not the proper
format in Legacy? I know about the AKA place and was using it for names they
might be found under when researching (rather than just a place for the
"went by")--is that the only place you would put "Mayme" (no quotes).

Barbara,

I have the same problem coming from FTM. Try searching for Individual, Alt.
Surname, Not Equal to, and leave "What to look for" blank. That seemed to
work for me.

Re: [LegacyUG] Surname formatting part II

2007-11-22 Thread Jim Rickenbacker(k)

Barbara,

I have the same problem coming from FTM. Try searching for Individual, Alt.
Surname, Not Equal to, and leave "What to look for" blank. That seemed to
work for me.

I just checked, and my AKA's also came over from FTM in the wrong format.
Is

it possible to search for all AKA's and see a list where I can go to those
with AKA's and correct the format? I tried a couple of things in the
search

screens and came up empty

I am going through the master list of surnames and correcting the
formatting

as it was suggested and it is working very well but in the process I have
found an interesting glitch. Apparently when I imported my FTM file all
AKAs were automatically put in the surname space! So, when added only a
first name AKA in FTM (like Polly) it transferred over to the surname
spot.

I wouldn't have readily noticed this if it weren't for me reformatting my
surnames take out the all caps. Very interesting! So, I am fixing both
issues at the same time.
