I deliberately avoided mentioning regsvr32 as I had no wish to take the
chance of somebody really messing the system up!

I was not aware of previous conflicts with Legacy as I was not using the
program at that time. I do find the information rather surprising though,
and it is something I will keep in mind.

We don't particularly disagree on thiis, the version I have in System32
btw is 6.0.6470.0 (Sept. 2006). The main points I was making was 1) it is
worth doing the free check and 2) one cannot simply copy the dll from one
place to another eg. from the lap-top to the Desk Top.

Unless you know how to properly use regsvr32

Incidentally I have 3 copies as Ahead Nero use it (but call it
Xceed.dll.nco) and have it in their folder in the application program. I
also thought it was not good practice for programs to overwite System32
dlls.

There are a lot of programs that do things that are not "good practice".
There are recent reports that installing Legacy breaks the Inventory
Manager program used at Family History Centers, requiring a workaround. A
version of Legacy in 2003 ago did the same thing to IM, installing a
version of XCeedZip.dll that was incompatible. The IM people had to issue a
fix. I don't know if the current Legacy/IM problem is due to the same file
conflict, but I wouldn't be surprised.

Before using such a service, I would rename the existing file and
reinstall Legacy to see if that will put in and register the correct
version. Another person has stated "I just ran a search on XCeedZip.dll
and found two copies, one in the Legacy\backup folder and the other in the
\WINDOWS\system32 folder. Size, version and creation time for Legacy was
417 KB, 5.0.92.0 and 1/8/2007 4:59 PM, but for the system file it was
485KB, 6.0.6470.0 and 1/8/2007 5:09 PM". I would be reluctant to use the
version 4.5.67.0 that that site will install.

Straight reinstalls do not always update existing files, but renaming it
will give Legacy the chance to start fresh.

Hi Ellaine,

Following Sherry's comments on Xceedzip.dll, which is a dll I am not
familiar with, I had to do some research!

Yes, it would seem that it is possible for this dll to be taken over by a
worm but if your AV and Spyware software is up to date and regularly run
and show no problems this is unlikely.

More likely is that you have downloaded some software which has installed
a different version of this dll and it is either old or not installed
properly (in any event I would not be too happy/confident in the software
supplier).

It is not possible just to exchange this dll for another version as it
has to be installed on your computer and registered. Usually the
registration will be done automatically during the installation and it
maybe that this is where the problem arose.

I suggest you run the free scan on this site
http://www.dynamiclink.nl/htmfiles/rframes/info_dll/info_x/34.htm
to see what they say about this dll on your computer. If you do need to
replace it they charge around $13US. I do not know of a free version of
this dll. They do state that they are offering the original producer's
version and this is important.

Although I have used this site myself for other things and found it to be
reliable, I do emphasise that I cannot accept responsibility for the
outcome and their service.

This error strongly suggests that the computer has previously been used

Elaine,

As has been said before this is usually a network error so could you
clarify some points for me:
When you say in para 2) "restore a family file" do you mean using
File>Restore?
When you try to save the back to what drive and folder is it being saved
(in the box at the top)?
Have you ever managed to back-up or restore using this Desk Top - is it a
used one which has come from a company - have you only just obtained it?

This error strongly suggests that the computer has previously been used on
a network (or currently is) and you do not have the rights to use the
back-up facilities.

Arnie,

That's true. Legacy removes files that are part of the original install but
not files that a user creates (such as Family Files, saved report options)
or changes (usr files). Most of the folders are retained.

The uninstall removes Legacy from the registry and removes shortcuts.

Thanks for using Legacy.

Re: [LegacyUG] error 530

2007-07-17 Thread Gary Templeman
Have you installed any other software at the same time Legacy stopped
working? Another program may have overwritten the file with an earlier
version that breaks Legacy. To check the file version, go to your
Windows\System32 folder in Windows Explorer. You may need to click
Tools_Folder Options_View and check the box to "show hidden files and
folders". You should then be able to see the XCeedZip.dll file. Right-click
the file and select properties, then select the version tab. Post here what
version is present.

Uninstalling and reinstalling Legacy may not correct the problem if another
program has taken over that file, because it might be protected when Legacy
tries to reinstall. In that case, rename the file to XCeedZip.dll.old
(again, right-click and this time select rename). Then reinstall Legacy and
see if the version it installs is different.

Ellaine,

Something is messing up the XCeedZip.dll file on the computer that you're
getting Error 530. That file holds the licensing for the compression
program we use.

We're not sure what's happening and we haven't been able to duplicate the

running a spyware scanner or AV program is affecting that file but we

I'm running a late XP on a machine which replaces one that died last
December, so my Legacy program was a new install on a clean machine in
early January. I just ran a search on XCeedZip.dll and found two copies,
one in the Legacy\backup folder and the other in the \WINDOWS\system32
folder. Size, version and creation time for Legacy was 417 KB, 5.0.92.0
and 1/8/2007 4:59 PM, but for the system file it was 485KB, 6.0.6470.0 and
1/8/2007 5:09 PM.
Since the system file was created just 10 minutes after Legacy was
installed, it looks like the operating system went out and got a later
version. That suggests that it might be worth checking to see what
versions are present on the laptop and desktop. If it seems likely that
the desktop system version is incompatible with the Legacy one, it may be
worthwhile to rename that to say XCeedZip.old and try reinstalling Legacy,
and/or copying the system XCeedZip.dll from the laptop to the desktop (in
the correct folder!). The first maneuver may force the system to find a
compatible version, but there may not be one in the onboard .cab files,
and something else may be broken by the change. The second may hit
another problem that I won't go into, and also might break something else
which uses the file, but at least gives a known compatible set for Legacy.
If there's no improvement or something important stops working, it's
simple to delete the new XCeedZip.dll and rename XCeedZip.old to
XCeedZip.dll, which should restore the original situation.

Dear Ron, Cathy, Jack and Legacy support:
I have spent some time working with this error in the hopes that if I
understand it better I can give to you good folks some helpful information:
1) The error appears when go into the Legacy program and I try to either
backup a family file or restore a family family file on my desktop computer
ONLY -NO PROBLEM IN DOING EITHER ON MY LAPTOP.
2) I am going into legacy, clicking on file and selecting either back up a
family file or restore a family file. - all goes well until I click save
and then the following error appears:
3)Backup error: 530 - the license key required to use the control was not
found or is invalid. Make sure you have called the license method with a
valid license key as described in the documentation.
4) Again when I go into the Legacy program on my laptop and do exactly the
same things as listed above - ie bring the file up, select backup a family
file or restore a family file, the program works perfectly for C, D or
memory.

stick.
WHAT I DO NOT UNDERSTAND IS WHY I ABLE TO PERFORM THESE FUNCTIONS ON ONE
COMPUTER AND NOT THE OTHER - I took the Legacy 6.0 disk and reinstalled it
on both the laptop and desktop with my Norton disabled.
I hope the above answers enough of your questions for you experts to be
able to figure out how my problem may be solved.

Many thanks-
Ellaine Goodall

RE: [LegacyUG] error 530

2007-07-17 Thread Sherry/Support
Ellaine,

Something is messing up the XCeedZip.dll file on the computer that you're
getting Error 530. That file holds the licensing for the compression
program we use.

We're not sure what's happening and we haven't been able to duplicate the
problem. We suspect that installing or uninstalling another program or
running a spyware scanner or AV program is affecting that file but we
haven't been able to confirm it.

99.9% of the time uninstalling Legacy and reinstalling it solves the
problem. It's important to make sure you have all other program shut down
and your anti-virus and spyware scanning software disabled when you install
Legacy.

We've had a couple of users who have reported that reinstalling Legacy
didn't solve the problem and we haven't been able to figure out why.

Thanks for using Legacy.

RE: [LegacyUG] Error 530

2007-07-14 Thread Jack Earnshaw
Ellaine

First of all - can you run Legacy on the desktop? forget about loading in
your file, just try to open the program
If it will run, then try to create a new, blank family tree and add a few
random people
- you may need to change a setting in Options to start this - In
Options/Customise on the "General" Tab, choose "always prompt for starting
family". When Legacy starts up you can cancel from the file select and
create a new file.
After you have created the entries. Close Legacy and then reopen it and
select the file you created.

The idea of this is to make sure Legacy is installed OK on the machine.

After that then it depends, as others have asked, whether you have copied
the data files or done a backup - hence the word "restore" in your question.
The easiest way to copy the file is to back it up from within Legacy to the
Desktop and then copy the "zip" file to a thumb drive.
On the desktop copy the zip file from the thumb drive to the desktop. Right
click the icon for the file on the desktop and select properties and make
sure that Readonly is not ticked
Go into Legacy, cancel from the file open prompt, and do a file/restore
family file - selecting the backup file from the desktop as the input

If you can get it working then there are other things to consider copying
over - multi media files (photos) , more settings files to save having to
recreate them. But this is a secondary issue to getting the thing working in
the first place.

How are you getting the info from the laptop? Is it on a network or a
CDRom. The reason for asking is that copying files to CD and then trying to
access them on another machine tends to give grief as they are readonly. If
the file is on a CD then copy to the hard disk, change to Read/write (using
file/propertie) and then try to use it.

If you are accessing the file across a network, do you have full access
to the remote directory? Google searches for "Access Error 530" suggest that
the problem is to do with Network Access Permissions

Re: [LegacyUG] Error 530

2007-07-13 Thread Cathy

Hi Ellaine,

Like the others, I need more information.

Are you making a backup of your family file on the laptop direct to
the thumb drive?
And then putting the thumb drive in your desktop and using Legacy -
File > Restore and then getting the error?

If you've cut your family file to CD, then Legacy can't open it while
it is on the CD. As Jack said, you have to copy it to the hard drive
of the desktop and may need to change the read only attribute by
right clicking on the file on the desktop and choosing properties and
then unchecking Read Only.

You said you've reinstalled Legacy several times - on the laptop or
the desktop - using the latest downloaded copy or ?

Can't help without more information.

For this type of error, emailing Sherry direct at Legacy Support
<[EMAIL PROTECTED]> is the best idea - though she does take
time off over the weekend.

Elaine,

I am afraid I need some clarification. Is there a message with the error
number? As Jack says this is not a Legacy listed error but is listed by
microsoft for various errors.

I am not clear about what you mean by "restore". Are you saying that Legacy
will not run at all or you cannot get it to load your family file? If the
latter are you trying to load the .fdb file (ie the normal one) or the
backup .zip file? In either event please tell us in detail how you are
trying to do this and where the file(s) are.

I take it btw that you have installed Legacy on your desktop.

Subject: [LegacyUG] Error 530

I am having trouble backing up my legacy files from my lap top computer to
my land computer. What I am getting is an error 530 and it also says that it
can not read the zip files. I have reinstalled the zip files but it still is
giving me this error. I am not a computer expert so please give me the
information step by step if you can.
Thanks Shirley

Hi Sherry that you for your help but I uninstalled and reinstalled legacy
again and I now get zip does not exist or is an invalid name. I am not sure
what
is happening here but it is very frustrating. Any help for a novice is much
appreciated.
