Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy on Portable Hard Drive

2008-05-13 Thread Deb Yarbrough
This is not always an option... Some people have raided their hard drives
which require 2 drives to operate as one. Others may be like me and use a
laptop for all of my genealogy. I can't add another hard drive to my
laptop.

Sorry..

I don't disagree with buying an external hard drive for backup. My first
purchase (and cheapest) would be a 2nd internal hard drive for your
computer. I have two hard drives on mine, the second holds all My
documents with data files.

Yesterday, in the midst of scanning multi-page tiff images I drew the

Would

I should say that I am using these images with a database program, and

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy on Portable Hard Drive

2008-05-13 Thread Gary Templeman
If you really are running out of hard disk space, a portable hard drive is
the least of your concerns. Your computer itself will start acting really
flaky if you have less that 10% free space. Here are a few things you need
to do ASAP.

1. Empty the Recycle Bin
2. Clear the Internet Explorer cache (in version 7 it is Tools_Internet
Options_Browsing History - click delete, and then delete all (checking the
box to also delete things from add-on programs) While in the options, also
click the Settings button in Browsing History and reduce the size for the
stored files to something reasonable like 60-90 MB.

3. Clear out the Windows temporary files

Note: Much of the above can be automated. I like to use a program like
CleanUp! found at http://www.stevengould.org/index.php , but do a custom
cleanup and check the settings so you do not delete things you want to keep,
such as newsgroup subscriptions. It will not change the storage options

4. Uninstall any programs you no longer need.
5. Clear out old, unused files from My Documents, My Music, etc.
6. Run the Windows disk cleanup utility, which will also compress some files
so they take up less space. Start_Programs_Accessories_System Tools_Disk
Cleanup.

7. Defragment the drive.

Finally, consider having a computer tech clone your existing HD onto a
bigger one, then reformat the old drive and move your multimedia files onto
it, if there is room in the case for a second drive, or a portable one if
not. I couldn't tell from your message if the computer in question is a
laptop or if you *also* have a laptop.

RE: [LegacyUG] Legacy on Portable Hard Drive

2008-05-13 Thread DLevenick
Ugh, sounds like I really have a problem. I also discovered that my Mirra
Personal Server has coincidentally (??) failed and is now a piece of scrap.
It last backed up my files on Friday May 9, and the next day I scanned about
40 multi-tif documents. Truly, it is enough to make one become a Luddite.

Thanks for the clear tips of how to limp along for now. My files are on a
laptop, thus the plan for a portable hard drive. Maybe I should switch to a
desktop?

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy on Portable Hard Drive

2008-05-13 Thread John Barranco
For whatever my 2 cents is worth...

I would NOT backup up my files to an internal hard disk drive. That is just
asking for problems. Being in the IT industry for many years (more than I care
to think about) I have seen people make some major mistakes and one of them is
backing up files to an internal drive. It gives you a false sense of security.
Always prepare for the worse type of disasterand then go from there. You may be
playing it save by using a different drive to hold your backups, but if it is
an internal drive it will not do you any good if the PC is stolen, caught in a
fire, flood or other natural disasters. External drives are better only if you
store them some place away from the PC...preferablyin a different location. You
might want to consider taking the external hard disk drive to work or some
other location that is away from your research PC. Flash Drives (Thumb Drives)
are great if you get one of sufficient capacity to hold all your data. The
prices of these little gems
has dropped considerably in the last couple of year where one can purchase a
4GB Flash Drive for under $25.

But to me the best and most reliable type of backup is using an on-line backup
service (I use Carboniteat http://www.carbonite.com). The backup software works
in the background and will backup your data religiously on a daily basis. You
configure the backup on what files to backup the time to back them up and it
does it, that simple. The service I use encrypts the data prior to transferring
it to the backup service site. The cost is surprisingly cheap. Carboniteoffers
backup services for under $50 per year. That is more than a flash drive, but
less than an internal or external disk drive. They offer a 30 day free trial
and you don''t have to use a credit card to try it.

So how much is your research data worth to you?

RE: [LegacyUG] Legacy on Portable Hard Drive

2008-05-12 Thread Roberta Wunder
Also to consider with truly portable hard drives (the new ones that power
from your computer instead of plugging into the wall) is that they require
TWO USB ports to obtain enough power on most laptops.

That said I have two portables the traditional plug into the wall type and a
new Power from Computer type. Makes a great backup drive. I keep all my
files backed up on it and purchased an USB double cable on eBay to keep in
my car and I just slip the drive in my pocket when heading to the library.
The file access is no different than my computer at home.

After Ver. 7 arrives, it would be awesome for the developers to put some
attention to a portable version of Legacy even if it had limited features.

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy on Portable Hard Drive

2008-05-12 Thread John Carter
Before buying anything, check whether your scanner creates temptorary
files during scanning and never deletes them. I've used a Visioneer One
Touch scanner that creates a 25MB or larger temporary file in C:\Documents
and Settings\your-user-id\Local Settings\Temp\OneTouch for each page
scanned - but *never* deletes them. This will rapidly fill a hard drive -
50 scanned pages * 25MB/page = 1.25GB in temp files, plus the size of the
files you named and saved.

Remember that each new version of almost any software needs more disk
space than the previous version - all those great new features add to the
size of the program. Upgrading to Legacy 7 will have some cost in disk
space.

If you're using a desktop PC, then get another hard drive installed.
500GB drives are in the $100US range. If you're not comfortable opening
the case on your PC, have a computer savvy friend do it and buy him/her a
nice lunch.

If you're using a laptop, an external drive is usually the easiest option.
If it's an older laptop with USB 1.X ports (instead of the newer USB
2.0), the external drive will be much slower than the internal drive.
With USB 2.0 ports, you won't see much difference in the speed of the
external drive. However, I would suggest using the external drive for
storing pictures, not the basic Legacy data.

John

I've never had that problem. Just the scanned ones are saved. I've used
a cannon portable scanner (Awesome for places that have no power close

Before buying anything, check whether your scanner creates
temptorary files during scanning and never deletes them.
I've used a Visioneer One Touch scanner that creates a 25MB
or larger temporary file in C:\Documents and
 Settings\your-user-id\Local Settings\Temp\OneTouch for each
page scanned - but *never* deletes them. This will rapidly
 fill a hard drive - 50 scanned pages * 25MB/page = 1.25GB in
temp files, plus the size of the files you named and saved.

Remember that each new version of almost any software needs
more disk space than the previous version - all those great
new features add to the size of the program. Upgrading to
Legacy 7 will have some cost in disk space.

If you're using a desktop PC, then get another hard drive installed.
500GB drives are in the $100US range. If you're not
comfortable opening the case on your PC, have a computer
savvy friend do it and buy him/her a nice lunch.

If you're using a laptop, an external drive is usually the
easiest option. If it's an older laptop with USB 1.X ports
(instead of the newer USB 2.0), the external drive will be
much slower than the internal drive.
With USB 2.0 ports, you won't see much difference in the
speed of the external drive. However, I would suggest using
the external drive for storing pictures, not the basic Legacy data.

RE: [LegacyUG] Legacy on Portable Hard Drive

2008-05-12 Thread DLevenick
Thanks, John, for the tip on temp files. I will check it out. I am using a
newer Dell laptop, so I think a Portable Drive will be my best bet. I don't
know if I have the stamina to complete this project, however, it is very
time-consuming.

I am making multi-tiff files for archiving purposes, then jpg for sharing.
Next week my high school students will be transcribing the letters as part
of a spring special project -- I am calling it Reading Women's Lives as
the letters were to/from my gmother's family. Should be very exciting.

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy on Portable Hard Drive

2008-05-12 Thread Deb Yarbrough

Here's my take on this..
1) get 2 external drives. Download the latest version of Legacy to the hard
drives. Intellishare mark you data files. Copy all photos, scanned
document files and files etc to the hard drives. Continue to keep the data
on the computer, but update to the hard drives. That way, If you are
visiting family, you can plug your hard drive into their computer,
temporarily install Legacy on their computer and have access to all of your
data. Be sure to uninstall the program before you leave.

I don't disagree with buying an external hard drive for backup. My first
purchase (and cheapest) would be a 2nd internal hard drive for your
computer. I have two hard drives on mine, the second holds all My

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy on Portable Hard Drive

2008-05-11 Thread JLB
You can store images on whatever drive you want to. As long as it's
plugged into your computer the images will link up to where you want
them same as if they were on your C-drive. I would suggest having a
second copy though, not just counting on one external hard-drive. One
other suggestion. If you're plugging into a laptop, you may have to
plug directly, not through a hub, in order to have enough power. Can
your laptop handle this? To your second question: Unless you're running
specifically portable applications, you have to have your programs
installed on your C-drive.
