Re: [LegacyUG] Sneak Peek of Legacy 7
Forgive me if this has already been covered. Does anyone know if the so called witness feature will be in Legacy 7? I've been wanting to reorganize my sources and events and have been holding off (for two years now) hoping for this functionality. I also agree that it would be a real bummer if the web page creation stuff didn't have at least a few things that many users have requested. Have you unlocked the real power of Legacy? Re: [LegacyUG] Sneak Peek of Legacy 7 - Part Two
Thanks again Renee for the sneak peek into L7. I am so glad you asked about being able to create our own source templates. This alone will be worth the upgrade at whatever price will be set. As Sherry stated earlier UTF8 will come with the VB.NET rewrite which I am glad to hear is already being looked at / worked on. I'll bet this will be version L8 or Legacy 2010. Has a nice science fiction ring to it :) I'm hot and cold on VB.net as a consumer because I will have to upgrade any old equipment to run the bloated software. I'm can be fairly certain that is why this new version of Legacy is not yet running on VB.net. .net has been out for a while now and it comes with many issues to programmers. Legacy may lose a few older customers who can not afford an upgrade of equipment to run such a beast...I will not bore anyone with the details as those who program know exactly what I am talking about. The new FTM2008, which I previewed, runs on the .net framework and there is all kinds of problems with it. It locks up and runs painfully slow on MS Vista and I have more that the required ram and processor speed. I have 2gb of ram and an AMD dual processor that smokes running XP and Linux with no problem. Without getting into details, trust me in that I say my hardware surpasses MS on paper requrements for Vista. I honestly do not think FTM will convert it's old timers right away and a few may jump ship to the new Legacy or hold out using their current version of FTM. If Legacy released a .net program right now they would have a lot of angry customers and I'm sure they are aware of this. Just sign up to the FTM mailing list and feel the heat :) BTW - I wiped Vista off one of my computers because it's slow and IMHO is a dumbed down version of XP with window dressing added. I honestly tried it and IMHO it is still in beta status. To the legacy gurus and owners--I personally am hoping for a future rewrites of Legacy as modular using excellent and proven web based open sourced languages and tools that have great track records. Bugs being fixed fairly quickly due to a large community of programmers. Just wishful thinking on my part. I'm not meaning to bash MS as it has been good to me with XP over the years but I personally would like less bloat and more function with both Windows and Legacy code. MS has chosen the bloated path and many programs unfortunately are forced to follow suit. Sorry to go off on a tangent Thanks again Renee for your report. Joe ps. I will gladly be a beta tester on the VB.net platform of Legacy if you want someone who will give brutal honesty :) Renee Zamora wrote: Here is the second part of my Sneak Peek of Legacy 7. http://rzamor1.blogspot.com/2007/08/sneak-peek-of-legacy-7-part-two.html Renee Zamora www.harrisena.com http://www.harrisena.com Have you unlocked the real power of Legacy? RE: [LegacyUG] Sneak Peek of Legacy 7
Elizabeth Shown Mills has 2 books on sourcing. The first one Evidence was written in 1996. This deals with proper citations of all types of sources, however it is lacking in properly sourcing online resources because of its date of publication. This is an inexpensive book and it helps greatly in setting up templates. Her second book, recently released for sale is Evidence Explained. This is a thick reference book that goes into details about properly sourcing for genealogical purposes. She also has a set of quick sheets which are several laminated pages containing source information for the most popular types of information. Re: [LegacyUG] Sneak Peek of Legacy 7
To answer Valerie in Sunny Sydney... The book being referred to is Evidence Explained: Citing History Sources from Artifacts to Cyberspace, by Elizabeth Shown Mills (considered by many/most to be the expert in Citations). It is available on the Legacy Web Site. Go to the home page, then using the drop down menu on the Buy Now! button (on the right hand side) go to Software Books. It is currently the book at the top of the list. Re: [LegacyUG] Sneak Peek of Legacy 7
The Mills book is basically how to reference genealogical sources correctly. The version I looked at was outdated (1996?) and I don't recall it showing how to reference some forms of electronic media. Genealogists take this as the authority on how to source from what I gather. I try to abide by MLA formatting with my sources since my wife is an English professor (She can spell-I can't) :) APA is another popular sourcing format for the pseudo sciences such as psychology and sociology (My majors in college). Google is your friend on these formats. From what I gathered from Renee's review is that we will have source templates. That is what I am thrilled about. Now that I think about it I hope we are allowed to build our own templates in whatever format we chose and not have to be married only to Mill's templates. I can only hope. Sourcing has been somewhat weak in this program and I miss using the now defunct Ultimate Family Tree that would allow me to format my source templates how I wanted. That program was actually one of the first programs to have Mill's templates built in to it. There were a lot of features in that program I would like to see implemented into Legacy. That program kicked arse and was years ahead of its time in ease of use and functionality. TMG tried to do this, but it became too complex for most users and IMHO is counter-intuitive. Oh and thanks to FTM for killing that program. Don't get me wrong Legacy filled it's shoes for my use and I like the mom and pops approach business model they have. More of a family all of us are because of it and these folks are very respectful even with what comes through this list :) Basically, it sounds like Legacy is growing up and I am glad to see the push on better sourcing options within the program as long as it maintains it's intuitiveness and data integrity. I pray the Legacy programming gurus give us the option to build our own templates. I'll be glad to lend you my UFT with it's Windows 3.1 16 bit GUI functionality overlaid on foxpro 16bit to take a gander at :) Joe Valeris Garton wrote: Could some one please tell me what this book is that has been referred to here ? Could I throw my unpopular 2 cents in and say I HATE bottom posting? I do not have very much space on my screen for messages to show, and to have to scroll down for every one of the 200 or so messages I get each day is a pain. I do agree it is much easier to follow if you bottom post, but to just simply have repeated post after repeated post come up with no idea of whether or not the answer matters to one is annoying, at least. Elizabeth C Gene Young wrote: ...As the site states, signatures are not required but can be used. Top posting, along with not trimming, is generally frowned upon, and if you use a properly formatted signature that begins with two hyphens and a space, anything following your signature (the body of the post you are quoting) will be trimmed by any properly designed mail reader. You may top or bottom post, as you wish, (there are after all no post police who will drag you away in handcuffs) but bottom posting is preferred (with proper trimming) as it is easier to follow what you are responding to. Geoff didn't even get to touch webpage creation. I'm not sure if there are any changes or not. I will ask. Myself I could like a way to make web addresses in my notes become hyperlinks - easily. I agree with you, I do a lot of this, but once you get in the habit, it doesn't take too long to do it: Type a href= then paste your url type paste the url again type /a Have you unlocked the real power of Legacy? Only you must use « (alt 0171) and » (alt 0187) in place of and or Legacy will read them as simple characters. Wm Voss Karl Plenge wrote: Geoff didn't even get to touch webpage creation. Where do you have to use the alt characters? I only do this for my GEDCOM exports to rootsweb, perhaps exporting to other sites has issues with this. Have you unlocked the real power of Legacy? Re: [LegacyUG] Sneak Peek of Legacy 7
I try to follow the conventions of whatever groups I join. In reviewing posts on this group, top posting seems to be the consensus. I find top posting, with prior remarks (but not repeated lines at the bottom of the messages), easiest because I prefer not to scroll to the bottom of a post before reading it. In fact, I generally skip reading those posts altogether. Top vs. bottom posting seems to be a preference. It's really not a huge deal either way, though. Dawn Elizabeth Cunningham wrote: Could I throw my unpopular 2 cents in and say I HATE bottom posting? I do not have very much space on my screen for messages to show, and to have to scroll down for every one of the 200 or so messages I get each day is a pain. I do agree it is much easier to follow if you bottom post, but to just simply have repeated post after repeated post come up with no idea of whether or not the answer matters to one is annoying, at least. Give me top posting too, anyday. Nothing I hate worse than scrolling down through a mile of rehash looking for something new, then not finding anything. = Richard Van Wasshnova Seal Beach, CA - Original Message - From: Elizabeth Cunningham [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: LegacyUserGroup@legacyfamilytree.com Sent: Wednesday, August 01, 2007 5:00 PM Subject: Re: [LegacyUG] Sneak Peek of Legacy 7 Could I throw my unpopular 2 cents in and say I HATE bottom posting?
