RE: [LegacyUG] TreeDraw Legacy and dotted Adoption boxes?

2007-02-23 Thread Rob Miller
Hey Ron:

You might want to see if your dotted boxes export to PDF properly first (not
just what shows up in the line thickness window). A couple people e-mailed
me privately and could export to PDF but the thickness window looked wrong
on screen. I could not do either before the new dll.

Hi Ron:

I realized a couple days ago that I had forgotten to contact TreeDraw, so I
winged off an e-mail to them. They were VERY quick in getting back to me.
They sent me an updated PDF driver and I now am able to see the dotted
boxes
when "exporting to PDF". My HP LaserJet 1012 still doesn't recognize them
on
it's own, but by exporting to PDF first, I am able to print off a chart
with

the dotted boxes.

This is rather weird!

Go to Format>Line style (before selecting the box if you wish to do
several)

and select the dashed line.
This is the weird bit - it only seems to work if the thickness of the line

Thanks Tracy,
That's what I thought.
I'll continue to not include pics automatically in TreeDraw

tags to mark pics for Legacy Scrapbook/Slideshow etc.

Hi Tracy,

Thanks for the previous information.

The table you ate looking for is tblBR but I regret that as I do not use Access
(or more accurately Open Office) to alter the database I do not know which
column to change.

In any event, as I'm sure you know when using Access do back everything up

Re: [LegacyUG] TreeDraw and Legacy photos, Passage Express

2007-01-12 Thread Cathy

Hi Tracy,
Re getting only preferred image into TreeDraw
I don't think it can be done - at least not easily.
The first problem is: What is a "Print flag"?

As you've discovered, it's not the Preferred mark.
Is it the Picture Tag? In a Legacy scrapbook you are supposed to be
able to print just tagged pictures - but I think that has a bug.
Anyway I have that set for far too many pictures to go through and

I tried to create TreeDraw charts from my Legacy file, it worked fine,

RE: [LegacyUG] TreeDraw Legacy and dotted Adoption boxes?

2007-01-11 Thread ronald ferguson

Rob,

This is rather weird!

Go to Format>Line style (before selecting the box if you wish to do several)
and select the dashed line.
This is the weird bit - it only seems to work if the thickness of the line is
set to 1; higher than that and a solid line is drawn. C'est la vie!

Thanks Cathy for the detail.

3. From your figures it would be true to say the the reduction I am trying to
make is "totally unrealistic".
My point was that with FTM it is possible. I would add that as a program I
don't particularly like FTM and only use it for this purpose.

4. Yes, that is what I meant. Again the problem is due to the size of the trees
making it quite a task to juggle around with the paths. BTW FTM is not much
better in this connection.

Have a great Christmas - I will as I'm off to foreign climes in a day or so.

Of course you check with the printer

Does the newest version of TreeDraw still show the place holder commas from
a Legacy file or has it been updated to allow omission of excess commas like
some of the Legacy 6 Deluxe reports? (Format, options for leading commas)

TreeDraw will modify information as it imports with search and
replace. I don't use placeholder commas but for those who do - just
put in Replace , , with ,

Options > Preferences - Replace Tab.
Note also that it is in the preferences where you set up what
information you want brought in - eg if you only want birth and death
dates and not locations or you don't want baptism and burial details.

Place holder commas also showed in Charting Companion last time I asked
someone to check. Some provinces of Canada have no counties and some
communities in my family history have become part of a city in recent years.
The original location name is needed to find sources.

Charting Companion makes pretty charts for a few people but you don't
have any of the flexibility of TreeDraw (which is why I say it is
best for smaller family groups).

RE: [LegacyUG] TreeDraw

2006-12-16 Thread M Couch

Yes, the excess commas can be removed in TreeDraw. The options have to be
set before importing but it's easy enough to use the "replace text" feature;
Enter , , in the 'text to be changed on import' and a
single comma in the 'replace with' box. Works well. I use the same feature
to shorten names of English Counties. Like most reports - preparation is the
key, I try features out using just a few generations from my database.

I tend to use charts to illustrate points (e.g. the relationships between
people mentioned in a Will) and have little need for very big "all in one"
charts, I need to be able to highlight individuals and add text and
pictures.

Someone asked if SuperTools from Wholly Genes (TMG) was as customizable as
TreeDraw - yes it is, but when I last tried it, it wouldn't import a Legacy6
file - I think the charting feature is now within The Master Genealogist
programme and SupertTools is being sold as an add-on for other programmes,
it doesn't look to have been updated for a few years.

Re: [LegacyUG] TreeDraw

Cathy,
It would be helpful to ask the printing service about paper size *before*
planning any large colored chart, or better still have a family member in
the printing business. Colored wall chart with photos at the nearest
printing service in my area is too expensive, something like $7 per sq. foot
on good quality paper.

Does the newest version of TreeDraw still show the place holder commas from

Place holder commas also showed in Charting Companion last time I asked
someone to check. Some provinces of Canada have no counties and some
communities in my family history have become part of a city in recent years.
The original location name is needed to find sources.

Official Lat and Long for the middle of a city might be more than ten miles
from the location of the event or building mentioned in a family history.
Early post offices in rural areas depended on the residence or business
office of the postmaster. One family appears to have had each child in a
different location, though nearly all the family BMD events were in and near
one ranch house for two generations around 1900.

Commercially printed charts are usually printed on rolled paper and a wide
shape, though one genealogy chart service has a sample image of a chart
planned to hang on a standard room door. My preference is for home-printed
color charts that fit on folding display boards four feet wide and three
feet tall that can easily fit in a car and move to multiple locations.

Rolled charts are rarely used except at an event with a long wall or table.
Sometimes lighting is unsuitable or the printing too small for viewing by
people who are most interested in the large chart. -- Elizabeth

Yes, the all in one tree chart is big. I printed one for my family, it was

However, it is without a doubt the best thing for a family reunion.

My mind always boggles at the thought of an "All in One" tree.

To put only the descendants of my maternal grandparents on a wall chart at a

readable size (11pt and 9 pt fonts) takes 2 B1 sized charts (B1 paper is
1000 x 707 mm). I repeat the children on both charts but have a note that
the rest of the descendants for other branches are on the other chart. My
maternal grandparents had 8 children, 6 of whom had children. One branch
takes a chart to themselves as they joined a religious sect that not only
doesn't believe in birth control but also believes in early marriage and
very large families. It's only recently we've had positive contact and
collected this part of the current tree.

I did the chart on two sheets as most of our family reunions are picnics in
parks. I did shrink them to A1 size (841x594mm) so they were easier to hold
and pass around.

Hi Cathy,

We are in agreement here. my interest in large trees is for use on the web
rather than a printed version.
For example if someone requires a lot of information from me it could be much
more convenient to send a pdf of all my file rather than messing around with
lines of multiple descent.

I have received a number of "all in one" trees in pdf format from others and
have found them extremely useful in seeing how their families fit into mine.

Naturally a pdf of an "all in one tree" could also be included in a website.

Re: [LegacyUG] TreeDraw

2006-12-15 Thread ArnieAbr
Here we go again, complaining about Legacy's lack of a Top Down Box Tree. I
use FTM to make my Trees. ( FTM is what is taught at the local college) No
company's Trees, except maybe Mac's Reunion is better. My opinion anyway.
I sure hope the in the next revision or update we see included Real Good
Trees. If this happens, Legacy would rule the industry.

RE: [LegacyUG] TreeDraw

2006-12-15 Thread Cathy

My mind always boggles at the thought of an "All in One" tree.

To put only the descendants of my maternal grandparents on a wall
chart at a readable size (11pt and 9 pt fonts) takes 2 B1 sized
charts (B1 paper is 1000 x 707 mm). I repeat the children on both
charts but have a note that the rest of the descendants for other
branches are on the other chart. My maternal grandparents had 8
children, 6 of whom had children. One branch takes a chart to
themselves as they joined a religious sect that not only doesn't
believe in birth control but also believes in early marriage and very
large families. It's only recently we've had positive contact and
collected this part of the current tree.

I did the chart on two sheets as most of our family reunions are
picnics in parks. I did shrink them to A1 size (841x594mm) so they
were easier to hold and pass around.

Hi Ron,

Your response helps a whole lot. I have version 2, and it did not get
reinstalled the last time I cleaned out my computer. I did some checking and
see that they have gone to ver 3, and I can upgrade for just a bit of $$. I
do remember not being particularly happy with ver 2.

I did check out your website ... love those scrolling charts! #3 on your
list bothers me since I do all of my work via printer, not website. I don't
understand why they don't let your shrink to 8.5 x 11 pages, though probably
manipulation by removing information or generations could whittle it down to
that point.

Again, thank you.

I agree. TreeDraw makes very good charts - but it takes some learning
- especially learning to select sections of your chart and group and
ungroup to move sections or edit or add information.
Also, if you want different coloured lines for different sections,
but not different coloured text, you need to change the line colour
in Preferences before bringing in that section to avoid the tedium of
changing them one by one.

It does have disadvantages - the main ones for me
You can't choose to remove the quoted name when importing your tree.
You can't choose to import just the preferred picture - it's all
or none. (you can add any photos you like individually)

Ron, I'm not sure what you mean by "not shrink to one PDF page"
You can set the page size to different sizes and can shrink to fit -
provided you've chosen a large enough size - I don't think it will
shrink to unreadable dimensions.

If I want my chart on one sheet, I sort this out before going to export.

You don't get PDF page until you export to PDF.

RE: [LegacyUG] TreeDraw v3.0

2006-08-27 Thread Rob Miller
I don't think so. Before converting to JPG, I tried checking and unchecking
the "Must have print flag" box in TreeDraw, but there was no difference.

After I converted to JPG, the new photos were readable by TreeDraw, and I
did not have to make any other changes in Legacy (other than linking the new
JPG's).

Thanks again!

Another idea.

TreeDraw allows you to specify that the photo must have a Print Flag
- this in Legacy terminology is a Tagged Picture (checkbox above
picture ticked) rather than the Preferred Picture (one with
asterisk). It means that the picture has to be ticked in Legacy.

Is this perhaps the difference between those being included and those not?

RE: [LegacyUG] TreeDraw v3.0

Cathy!

That is definitely one confusing glitch in the TreeDraw program. I just had
a "test" bitmap that was working until I renamed it and then TreeDraw hated
again! UGH!

Thank you so much for your reply. I downloaded Fast Stone Image Viewer, made
a batch conversion and all is good with the world again. I'm following your
suggestion and archiving my .BMP images, and working with the newly
converted .JPG's within Legacy.

I was originally worried how the quality of the JPG's would be, but the mini
descendent tree I printed looks pretty good!

Thanks again!

Hi Rob,
I don't know why TreeDraw is having trouble with some BMP files but not
others.
However, you don't have to rescan your photos and documents to change
the file format.

You need a program that will do file conversions.

The free Irfanview (www.irfanview.com) and Faststone
(www.faststone.org) both do this as well as most other photo editors.

I save scans in TIF presumably for the same reason you've saved in
BMP - non lossy format.
However I archive those scans and attach JPG copies to Legacy as it's
a smaller file.

You'd have to reattach them to Legacy - or use Access to change the
file extension in the relevant table.

Cheers,
Cathy

I created a little ancestor chart, but TreeDraw does not like 90% of my
photos (all are in .BMP format). At this point it doesn't make sense why
some .BMP files are okay, and other aren't. There doesn't seem to be any
clear pattern as which ones are failing.

Has anyone experienced this before? I couldn't find anything about this
particular problem in the Help Files, and am not looking forward to the
prospect of scanning my photos/documents.

Thanks!

RE: [LegacyUG] TreeDraw v3.0

2006-08-27 Thread Rob Miller
Ron:

I wondered about that too, but some of the photos appearing are large
bitmaps too.

Then I thought maybe it doesn't like the photos that were cropped within
Legacy. But checking it out, I can see some of the cropped photos have been
accepted.

I wondered if it didn't like pictures that were "Auto Corrected" in
Microsoft Office Picture Manager. So I tried "auto correcting" a couple of
the photos that were appearing, and they continued to show afterwards.

UGH... There is nothing in the Help file to cover this. These are the times
I miss the flexibility of FTM and the lack of add-ins.

Thanks for trying!

I haven't tried using Tree Draw with photographs but one thing that comes to

mind is that bitmaps are very memory intensive. Is it possible that in
combination with a large size you are hitting the problem. If it's only the
smaller ones which are being recognised then this could indicate this sort
of problem.

I just purchased TreeDraw v3.0 and am still only playing around with it at
this point.

I created a little ancestor chart, but TreeDraw does not like 90% of my
photos (all are in .BMP format). At this point it doesn't make sense why
