Re: [LegacyUG] Update Installation
Not to cause a problem, but for those who CAN afford it, in areas where high speed access does not seem to be available, have you considered satellite connection? I could not get a local high speed connection, even today, but have installed a satellite connection and found it to be worth it's weight in gold. It may not be quite as fast as some high speed connections, but it is at least 10 times faster than dial-up is. Ted Rissmiller [EMAIL PROTECTED] Have you heard about Legacy Family Tree? RE: [LegacyUG] Update Installation
Ruth, When I was on Dial-up I used a download manager, namely Star Downloader FOC from: http://www.stardownloader.com/downloads.php. This probably won't help you with the updates but will enable you to more easily download the full version. If your connection is dropped the downloader remembers where it was up to, reconnects and continues it also increases the speed of downloading. You best solution at present does seem to be to uninstall your current version and then download and reinstall the full version - this will give you the updates. In fact I still use it, as it sets up a folder Downloads in your C Drive (or elsewhere if you wish) and creates a folder for each download so you can retain the set up folder for future use if necessary. From time to time I copy these to CD/DVD to free up HD space. Jenny, Just to ad to what you have said, I am now using IE7 RC1 browser which has tab browsing. I have also found that with this browser one needs to permanently allow pop-ups when accessing a download page (or press Ctrl - but this is a pain). The solution turned out that this happened if your browser was set to ask if you would allow cookies. If it was set to accept or do not accept cookies, it was fine, but if it was set to ask you first, the update stalled because it was waiting for your answer which did not appear within the program's browser. Interesting, because I had a very similar problem recently when trying to download something. I got the usual message at the top of my browser about pop-ups being blocked, so I'd click temporarily allow pop-ups and then try to download again and get the same message again! In the end I realised I had to permanently allow pop-ups, get the download screen and do the download, then I could go back to blocking pop-ups from that site again. -- Jenny M Benson _ Be the first to hear what's new at MSN - sign up to our free newsletters! http://www.msn.co.uk/newsletters Legacy User Group guidelines can be found at: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Etiquette.asp To find past messages, please go to our searchable archives at: http://www.mail-archive.com/legacyusergroup@legacyfamilytree.com/ For online technical support, please visit http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Help.asp To unsubscribe please visit: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/LegacyLists.asp
Re: [LegacyUG] Update Installation
Hi Ruth I might be reading this wrong but you don't need to download all the updates just the latest one. The last update contains all updates that have come before. Like other listers have already said I always download the whole file and reinstall. Too many people have had one problem or another with the update option. RE: [LegacyUG] Update Installation Error
Joshua, This is the first I've seen an Error 5 while doing the install. The standard repair for this error is: Delete all .USR files in the Legacy folder on your hard drive. This will delete any preexisting user settings. The files will be recreated automatically when you re-install Legacy and you'll need to redo your settings. Next uninstall Legacy, restart your computer and then re-install Legacy. We are having problems with users accessing the update from within Legacy, but it's usually a Network Error 3, 404 not found error message. Until we get this problem solved, please go to our website to download the update. In Step 3, make sure that you select Download Full Setup Thanks for using Legacy.
