Otherwise, I don't know.

My opinion, and I haven't used multimedia but plan on it eventually, is to
keep my multimedia on the USB drive, AND at least occasionally keep another
back-up in another place like my hard drives and or 500 gig back-up drive!
Just my opinion!!! I'd rather be over-cautious about saves.

of information available from the web for this.

RE: [LegacyUG] Using Legacy on 2 Computers

2008-05-29 Thread Claire Spinelli
I'm not generally considered to be computer illiterate. However, you are
apparently way ahead of me! Is there anyway you could explain in simple
terms how the autorun program checks for new multimedia files?

On 29 May 2008 G. C. Oliver wrote:

If you have your current Legacy file on a USB drive how do you your
multimedia files attached and current? Do they also reside on the USB
 drive?

They could. But for my own purposes I decided to keep them on both
my desktop and laptop computers. The decision was based on the
(then) small size of memory sticks, the huge quantity and size of my
collection of multimedia files (census pages, registrations,
certificates, etc) and the fact that they don't need updating -- only
additions.

So I have my working Legacy database only on the memory stick, and
copies of the multimedia files on both of my computers.

My memory stick is set up with an AutoRun program so that when I plug
it into either of my computers it automatically makes a backup to it.
Then it checks to see if any multimedia files have not been
archived. Any it finds are copied to the memory stick and will in
turn be copied to the other computer whenever the stick is plugged
into it. Note: if this memory stick is plugged into any other
computer it will not do any copying or backups.

So the memory stick's AutoRun program keeps both computers up-to-date
with the multimedia files (no matter which computer I add them to)
and there's also a database backup on both computers. When the month
changes I have another auto-running program on my desktop computer
that uploads a copy of the latest database backup to a web site.

Rather than have a specific drive letter to identify the memory stick
I've added the shield sword icon to it as identification -- via
its AutoRun.inf file. That way when more than one removable disk is
attached the Legacy one is immediately identified by its icon.

Since setting up a drive for AutoRun is off topic for this list I'll
not go into further details here about how to do this. There's lots
of information available from the web for this.

There is no best. I think it really depends on which computer you consider to
be the one that you will use for the majority of your data enty. If you are
going to use them about equally, I would consider keeping the data on the
portable, but just remember that it will be subject to more abuse and potential
failure. Therefore, be religious in backing up to both computers internal hard
drives.

Hi Denise, I'm not sure I'm right, but I keep my files on a FLASHDRIVE and
then also have a place to save them on my laptop and another on my desktop. I
also use a 500GB hard drive to back important files on. This is probably
over-kill, but I hate loosing my work . . . With a flash drive you can also
take it to Research places and download things like a Family History Center.
Good luck I'll be watching to see what others are doing, too.

Hi Denise

I have been successfully using a 2.5in Portable Drive for all of my
family history data form well over a year now. I have the portable drive
configured with drive letter X: on my desktop, laptop EeePC and swap
it as required . At the end of each session it is backed up to a NAS
device. Saves a lot of headaches keeping track of the most current
version and in moving data around.
