My opinion, and I haven't used multimedia but plan on it eventually, is to keep my multimedia on the USB drive, AND at least occasionally keep another back-up in another place like my hard drives and or 500 gig back-up drive! When the month changes I have another auto-running program on my desktop computer that uploads a copy of the latest database backup to a web site. Rather than have a specific drive letter to identify the memory stick I've added the shield sword icon to it as identification -- via its AutoRun.inf file. That way when more than one removable disk is attached the Legacy one is immediately identified by its icon. RE: [LegacyUG] Using Legacy on 2 Computers
There is no best. I think it really depends on which computer you consider to be the one that you will use for the majority of your data enty. If you are going to use them about equally, I would consider keeping the data on the portable, but just remember that it will be subject to more abuse and potential failure. Therefore, be religious in backing up to both computers internal hard drives. RE: [LegacyUG] Using Legacy on 2 Computers
Thanks all, I appreciate knowing that this is proven to work by experience. Backup backup is my mantra, and being able to take my info with me will be great. I esp. like Dennis's idea of naming the portable drive X as I am often confused when the computer starts assigning E F G to my USB devices. Good tip! Re: [LegacyUG] Using Legacy on 2 Computers
Hi Denise, I'm not sure I'm right, but I keep my files on a FLASHDRIVE and then also have a place to save them on my laptop and another on my desktop. I also use a 500GB hard drive to back important files on. This is probably over-kill, but I hate loosing my work . . . With a flash drive you can also take it to Research places and download things like a Family History Center. Good luck I'll be watching to see what others are doing, too. You might want to check the archives link below; this has been discussed several times over the last six months or so, along with USB flash drives, etc. Unfortunately, it's still forbidden, but I'm sure that it'll be fixed shortly. Re: [LegacyUG] Using Legacy on 2 Computers
Hi Denise I have been successfully using a 2.5in Portable Drive for all of my family history data form well over a year now. I have the portable drive configured with drive letter X: on my desktop, laptop EeePC and swap it as required . At the end of each session it is backed up to a NAS device. Saves a lot of headaches keeping track of the most current version and in moving data around.
