RE: [LegacyUG] Test-- Subscribed, but no messages arriving

2010-03-02 Thread William Boswell
I understand many of these web hosting services will block accounts if too much
mail is coming through. I just switched from another provider back in December
so maybe I should go back to using my gmail account even though it didn't seem
to work too well a week ago. I wasn't receiving messages from the list.

I suspect it's this hosting provider that is the problem and I didn't even
think of it at the time since this list receives a lot of email. I'll try
unsubscribing and resubscribing under my other email address. I've already
paid this company a year in advance so I don't need problems with them.

Subject: RE: [LegacyUG] Test-- Subscribed, but no messages arriving

There are at least two incarnations of the definition of "greylisted". One
involves something that is not yet "blacklisted" but on a watch list, or such
similar happenings when a particular mail server is ill-configured. But the
most common usage is that of an anti-spam filter which effectively blocks the
message the first time it is received and requests that it be resent after a
certain delay, typical 300 seconds or so. Since most spammers don't bother
resending messages, legitimate messages are supposed to get resent as per
standard protocol.

In other words, your mail hosting account has filters established on it. The
downside is that all your mail is delayed. It can get worse; if the sending
server is configured to ignore such requests, then even legitimate messages
will never get sent a second time and thus never arrive.

Greylisting practices are highly debated and one big criticism is that their
very nature triples the amount of messages being sent, as if the Internet
weren't becoming more and more crowded every day. In many European and Asian
countries where the average user bandwidth is much more than their American
counterparts can enjoy, this practice is not yet seen as a problem.

Ron:

It wasn't left in my outbox, but I did receive two messages from a server that
indicated it had not been sent. This is part of that message:

Delay reason: SMTP error from remote mail server after RCPT
TO::
host mail.legacyusers.com [69.175.37.210]: 451 Greylisted, please try again
in 900 seconds

I have no idea what 451 Greylisted means. Shortly after receiving this second
message the Saturday email was finally delivered. The message was delivered by
the email hosting service (my hosted web service).

Delays with the Legacy Server (though I haven't found any)

I had the same problem a couple of days ago, so I unsubscribed and

them as Males - all very confusing!! Non of these 3 were married, it was
just a straight sex swap!!

I am still trying to work out the 2nd problem, as there appears to be some
legitimate people mixed up with the Unknown entries, so I may have to try
doing the operation section by section leaving the 'good' people behind.

Re: [LegacyUG] printing to 8-1/2"x14" LDS FGS

2010-03-02 Thread RICHARD SCHULTHIES
I didn't know it could be done, so I looked and found when ordering a family
group sheet, I went to reports, picked FGS, choose report options, then
landscape and legal 8-1/2 x 14. I didn't print it but the preview seemed to
look good.

Actually, just by clicking on "Create Problems List", the file will be
created. That's how you can go into the Potential Problems report and click
on "View Existing Problems List" and have the previous list come up.

You don't need to actually save anything - Legacy does it for you.

[LegacyUG] Bug-Reported: [Map of Places for ] with locations in South America.

2010-03-02 Thread Christian Ramsburg
The following has been reported as a 7.4 bug to Legacy Support (although it
is an issue in 7.0.109 as well).

The "mapping feature" for a person, (The icon that appears in the tool bar
{Merge} {Internet} {Charting} {MAPPING} {exit}), does not display pins for
locations which are south of Equator, in South America.

However, mapping from the Master locations list, works fine.

In fullness any location South of the Equator and West of the Prime Meridian
is not "pinned" by the [Map of Place for ] window. Locations that
are NW, NE, SE are fine in both views.

e.g.
Ciudad de Montevideo, , Montevideo, Uruguay

Kandi, , Northern, Fiji

Adamstown, , , Pitcairn Islands

The 451 is undoubtedly a response code from the SMTP mail server. It is
almost certainly a numeric representation of the 'Greylisted' error
description. Our computers do find it easier to work with numbers, hence
the 451 and the error description, as per the SMTP protocol standards.

RE: [LegacyUG] Test-- Subscribed, but no messages arriving

2010-03-02 Thread Brian L. Lightfoot

I have no idea what 451 Greylisted means. Shortly after receiving this second

Loads of reasons:
It's in html which makes it bigger
Delay with your ISP
Delivered by the country route
Got lost
Delays with the Legacy Server (though I haven't found any)
Although the details attached to the post show that it was not posted until

I had the same problem a couple of days ago, so I unsubscribed and
resubscribed using a different email address. I think it has something to
do with Gmail since I normally use that email address and not this one.

Re: [LegacyUG] Test-- Subscribed, but no messages arriving

2010-03-02 Thread Virginia Dunham
Found on Google:

Greylisting (or graylisting) is a method of defending e-mail users against
spam. A mail transfer agent (MTA) using greylisting will "temporarily
reject" any email from a sender it does not recognize. If the mail is
legitimate, the originating server will, after a delay, try again and if
sufficient time has elapsed, the email will be accepted. If the mail is from
a spammer it will probably not be retried since a spammer goes through
thousands of email addresses and typically cannot afford the time delay to
retry.

Somewhere along your email's transmission path, some filter identified your
message as possible/probable spam. The request to retry in 15 minutes is a
reasonable test to see if it was part of an automated mass mailing. Most
probable causes are suspicion of mass mailings from LUG, or someone on our list
marking LUG traffic as spam rather than deleting it or unsubscribing. Worse
and odder things happen. I'm on Comcast, and emails from my remote cousin in
New Zealand not only get occasionally bounced, but he gets blacklisted rather
than grey and locked out of sending anything to USA for a week or so. Mostly
it's happened when a gedcom was sent as an attachment, and we've had to resort
to using a file service to exchange such. Comcast's message gives a way to
advise that it wasn't a spam message, but when one does, it's ignored.

Hi Carol,

There was a email this morning mentioning why some had it changed. If
your always on, check 5:32 by Bob Janice. He received a answer from one
of the developers Ken McGinnis. If you missed the email, you can check

I was never able to update from within the program without getting an error

previous version.

My customer number for the Deluxe version stayed the same maybe because I

Evert and all . . . .

Got email from Ken McGinnis yesterday concerning the changing of my customer
number by version 7.4.  Turns out that the VERY INITIAL release of the update
file caused the change.  Once Millennia realized this, they changed the update
file within a couple of hours to remedy this.  Again, this change in the
customer number only occurred for those people who downloaded the 7.4 update
within the first couple of hours of its release.  Anyone who downloaded the
file after the "fixed" update had been put on Millennia's server will not have
this problem.

Re: [LegacyUG] Web page creation issues

2010-03-02 Thread Cathy-0
Dennis,

I can only respond to your third question below. However, I should probably
also state that I also code simple HTML web pages and have done so for
years.

Yes, I find Legacy's creation of web pages to be very easy. I find it
easiest to play with the various options on my computer first and see how
they turn out. Then when I'm happy with the end results on my computer,
only then do I place the finalized web pages up on the web. You can see my
web pages at the following web site.

http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~nywestch/NewRoc1902/index.htm

Scroll down the home page to the section labeled: "Those Who Lost Their
Lives" and click on anyone of the 17 names. Their pages with genealogies
were created with Legacy. And I have tweaked the results somewhat after
Legacy created the pages..

It wasn't left in my outbox, but I did receive two messages from a server that
indicated it had not been sent. This is part of that message:

I have no idea what 451 Greylisted means. Shortly after receiving this second
message the Saturday email was finally delivered. The message was delivered by
the email hosting service (my hosted web service).

Bill,

Loads of reasons:
It's in html which makes it bigger
Delay with your ISP
Delivered by the country route
Got lost
Delays with the Legacy Server (though I haven't found any)
Although the details attached to the post show that it was not posted until
today - was it left in your outbox?

Re: [LegacyUG] Web page creation issues

2010-03-02 Thread Ron Ferguson
Dennis,

Everyone of your questions can have any answer you wish. You posted this
email in html, which is the language of web pages, so you found this easy
enough to do (btw. plain text is requested on this list). Depending
on what you want it can also be extremely complex.

Web pages appear in a user's browser, they are stored on a site arranged by
the web developer, which may be free or paid for.

You can have them open to all, or closed, depends on how you do it and what
is available from your web host.

It is easy enough to create a web site on your PC. In Legacy use
Internet>Create Webpages. I recommend that you do this using a small number
of individuals and have a good play to see how they work. You will find a
whole load of stuff about doing this on my website at
http://fergys.co.uk/Blogs/WebPge.php et al.

When you have had a play, or if you hit problems, I suggest that you join
WUL, a self-help group aimed at helping Legacy Users create web pages. It is
a Yahoo Group and can be found at http://uk.groups.yahoo.com/group/WUL/

Hope this helps a little!

Entirely controlled by your ISP hosting service. It is beyond the scope

Entirely controlled by your ISP hosting service. Legacy creates the
pages on your computer's hard drive. It is up to you to obtain a host
and publish the pages online.

That depends on a lot of variables. I suggest that you take some
courses geared towards web creating and maintenance. You may find a
computer group at your local library that may be able to help.

Okay, that explains how it happened but begs the initial question: have we
been dis-enfranchised to any degree and will we encounter problems when we next
attempt an update?

  Evert and all . . . .

Got email from Ken McGinnis yesterday concerning the changing of my customer
number by version 7.4.  Turns out that the VERY INITIAL release of the update
file caused the change.  Once Millennia realized this, they changed the update
file within a couple of hours to remedy this.  Again, this change in the
customer number only occurred for those people who downloaded the 7.4 update
within the first couple of hours of its release.  Anyone who downloaded the
file after the "fixed" update had been put on Millennia's server will not have
this problem.

From what I could make out, there were a lot of Google-related problems
over the week-end. On many occasions, I was unable to login to my
mailbox. I would assume that Google may have been able to receive mail
but had problems sending messages to where they were intended to go.

Then it must be something else because as I posted in another message since I'm
using a different email address, I am receiving messages, but it took three
days for a response to the post. I think the new email system needs some
tweaking since others were saying some time ago they were having problems with
receiving messages.

I don't have a problem with either email address sending/receiving to other
lists or persons so the problems has to be with this list or Gmail. This email
address has no relation to Google since it belongs to my hosted server.

RE: [LegacyUG] Test-- Subscribed, but no messages arriving

2010-03-02 Thread William Boswell
This is weird. I sent this on Saturday and it has taken three days to post.
I've been receiving messages from the board, but wondered why this one took so
long to post.

I had the same problem a couple of days ago, so I unsubscribed and resubscribed
using a different email address. I think it has something to do with Gmail
since I normally use that email address and not this one.

Re: [LegacyUG] a Question

2010-03-02 Thread Tim Rosenlof
Hi Maureen,

My first thought is to make sure you are not using the same file. It
sounds like you are not, however sometimes when the split screen ask's
you if you would you like to open another file, I inadvertently opened
my same file again. That is just food for thought. It sounds like you
are opening and split screen with both. Other than that, I will climb
back under my rock and observe.

Regards,
Tim Rosenlof

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy 7.4 Assigns New Customer Number

2010-03-02 Thread Bob Janice
Evert and all . . . .

Got email from Ken McGinnis yesterday concerning the changing of my
customer number by version 7.4. Turns out that the VERY INITIAL release
of the update file caused the change. Once Millennia realized this,
they changed the update file within a couple of hours to remedy this.
Again, this change in the customer number only occurred for those people
who downloaded the 7.4 update within the first couple of hours of its
release. Anyone who downloaded the file after the "fixed" update had
been put on Millennia's server will not have this problem.
