[LegacyUG] iPhone

2010-04-29 Thread Malcolm Green
I've developed an iPhone application, Families, which enables you to view
and edit your Legacy family files on an iPhone or iPod Touch. The app is
not yet available via Apple's App Store as we wish to test it thoroughly
before releasing it. I'm therefore looking for beta testers who would be
willing to put it through its paces and provide constructive feedback. For
more information about the app and the beta testing process, go to
www.telgen.co.uk/families.

As part of the testing process we're keen to test the app with large family
files. My own is less than 1000 individuals and I'd like to check out the
app with 1+ individuals if possible. If anyone has a large file which
they're willing to send me for this purpose I'd be most grateful. I promise
to keep the data confidential and not disclose it to anyone else. If you're
able to help, please contact me at malc...@telgen.co.uk - I'll give you
details of how and where to send the file in order to avoid hitting mail
attachment size limits.

We are most grateful to Millennia for providing technical assistance in the
development of this app.

Malcolm Green

[LegacyUG] Legacy Charting Book

2010-04-29 Thread Anthony Gasparatos

I have constructed a basic family tree. Now, I need more information
from my friends and relatives.

To get them excited, I want to send them a sample book so that they
can see what our output would be like if they cooperated with me, by
sending me information. Is there somewhere such a sample/marketing book
that I can use? (If I did my own they would probably focus on my mistakes and
lose interest).

Thank you

 Anthony,

No, but with every download of Legacy a Sample file is included and there is
no reason why you cannot make a sample book from that data. I very much
doubt if they will know Geoff to be able to comment on the accuracy of his
 data!

If you are worried about them commenting on the presentation, all I can say
is that sooner or later you will have to learn the program, so you may as
 well start now grin.

Since you didn't say in your original post I will assume you are
referring to
http://search.labs.familysearch.org/

They have done a mavor reorganization to their site and this has changed
the search criteria. The following link can be pasted into your search
criteria and will work:

http://search.labs.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#searchId=9852562
670625281;p=recordResults;givenName=[GivenNames];searchType=standard;sur
name=[LastName]

You will have to cut and paste the entire string with no spaces.

If this occurs again in the future just go to the site, conduct a search
and copy the entire url that appears in the address bar. Copy it to a
text editor and substitute the appropriate Legacy codes in the search
string where appropriate, ie; givenName=Eugene becomes
givenName=[GivenNames] and surname=young becomes surname=[LastName].

This works with any site you wish to search.

I was referring to the Relationship Calculator, not the Set Relationships
tool. The identification of half relationships seems to have been fixed in
both tools, however the RC is broken beyond repair for me. If someone
thinks it works o.k. now, I'd sure appreciate help on I can get it to work
for me. Specifically, many errors show up when you select Print and then
Preview. In the example I'm looking at now, the Common Ancestor shown
on the RC screen is not the same as the Common Ancestor shown on the print
preview screen. If there are several relationships between the same two
individuals and the option to print all the relationships is chosen, the
preview shows complete garbage. As someone has reported previously, some
relationships shown on the RC screen are duplicates.

As I said, I give up.

Using my perferred starting person with the same settings that I always

[LegacyUG] Relationship Calculator - why Swap?

2010-04-29 Thread Mary Young
What is the point of Swapping the Left and Right Person - why does
Swapping show a different result?
For instance, my mother's sister married their father's cousin, Frank.
With myself as Left Person and Frank as Right Person, I get two
relationships: Frank is first cousin twice removed, and husband of
aunt.
Swapping to Frank as Left Person, he is still first cousin twice
removed; but underneath that, in blue letters, Not related.
Doesn't any relationship hold true both ways? If Frank is husband of
aunt am I not equally niece of wife?
Puzzled ...

This is not the search string I gave and it will not work. The link
that Judy offered will take you to the site but then you have to enter
 the info by hand.

The string I gave you is below and it does work as I have been using it
and just tested it two minutes ago.

http://search.labs.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#searchId=9852562
670625281;p=recordResults;givenName=[GivenNames];searchType=standard;sur
name=[LastName]

You enter this as the search string when you create or edit the custom
search string. It must be one line with no spaces.

Apologies,
The string I intended to post is;

http://search.labs.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#p=recordResults;
givenName=[GivenNames]searchType=closesurname=[LastName]

Using all CAPS for the variable does not work for me but the above does.
It was taken directly from the web site with only the variables
changed to the Legacy variable names. I have no clue why CAPS works for
you and Judy but not for me but as long as you are able to get the
searches done again it doesn't matter how.

Re: [LegacyUG] Relationship Calculator - why Swap?

2010-04-29 Thread Brian/Support
Mary,

How is the not related line shown between you and Frank when he is in
the left position? As the husband of your aunt. He is not related to you
by blood. However, the not related line should show that you are, the
niece of his wife.

What is the point of Swapping the Left and Right Person - why does
 Swapping show a different result?
For instance, my mother's sister married their father's cousin, Frank.
With myself as Left Person and Frank as Right Person, I get two

 aunt.
Swapping to Frank as Left Person, he is still first cousin twice
removed; but underneath that, in blue letters, Not related.
Doesn't any relationship hold true both ways? If Frank is husband of
aunt am I not equally niece of wife?
 Puzzled ...

Re: [LegacyUG] v7.4.0.39 - Relationship Calculator

2010-04-29 Thread Brian/Support
John,

The bug with the print all option from the relationship chart is known
and has been recorded in our bug tracking system. I have added you as a
new reporter for this problem. If you print each of the multiple
relationships individually the reports should be correct.

Please give me more information on the example where the print preview,
and the common ancestor shown in the relationship calculator are
different persons. What type of relationship is shown? How do the common
ancestors differ? Is the print preview from the print all option or is
it from printing a single relationship? Any other clues, you can give me
so that I can try and duplicate the problem would be very helpful.

 Hi Ron and John,

I'm just thankful that it is now working and going through the process, I
have noticed and reported back to Jim at Technical Support that there is a
difference in the number of pathways which are now detected as compaired
to the number detected prior to the April 25th update.

Using my perferred starting person with the same settings that I always
use, 10 closest relationships and 0 closest pathways, the program now goes
through 10,000 less than before, so something has changed.

 John,

Mine is working perfectly and faster than ever!

 Which option are you using?
Have you set the Direct Line as the preferred?
 Have you set relationships?
 Have you tried a check/repair?

[LegacyUG] LOCATIONS

2010-04-29 Thread BearJerCares

May I please ask your opinion on the the exact format of locations (both
born in and died in)?

I have been trying to follow:
City, County, State, Country

format and if one is missing, I insert the extra commas like

City, , State, Country

I'm comfortable with that except when I know that someone lived at a
certain city and I'm not sure the person was born there, it would be
nice to be able to put that in the same field instead of having to put
it in the extra notes or events fields. So, I've been putting:

City, County, State, Country, Of

This will build an extra set for locations in Legacy, but the advantage
is it is in plain view in the basic information. What is your take on
the best way to do this type?

Thanks

Jerry in Michigan

[LegacyUG] Pictures missing after upgrade to version 7.4

2010-04-29 Thread Noddie
Hi everyone

I recently upgraded to ver 7.4 paid version and now I have to go
through the laborious task of telling Legacy where some of
my pictures are situated. It seems it can find the ones directly in
the Picture directory, but not the ones as an extension of this
directory. I sort mine out with each directory for each category.
Can I not do that no?

Thanks for any help, I do not really want to have to manually seek
and find each of 55 photos which it states are missing.
The report also says Missing.txt but they are all jpg's.

Regards Gwen

Re: [LegacyUG] Pictures missing after upgrade to version 7.4

2010-04-29 Thread Noddie
Further to my query, I note when I go in manually and check the
missing photos there is a question mark on the photo, even though the
picture icon located on the family view page. However when I go find
the photo that is missing, put it back in as the right one, I then
end up with two identical photos in there even though the initial
check showed a missing photo with a ? mark.

This is so frustrating and is there something I am doing wrong.

Thanks once again

Gwen
