RE: [LegacyUG] information from other online trees

2010-08-16 Thread Kirsten Bowman
I had an unsourced tree posted at RootsWeb for probably five years with the
same expectation--having people contact me for sources--and even said so in the
page headers. *No one* ever wrote although the counter I installed ticked away
indicating the file had been viewed by a couple of thousand people. Finally
someone pointed out that sources add credibility to your work. I switched to
Legacy specifically for the sourcing capability and began including them. At
that point I started getting contacts. No blizzard, but about half a dozen a
year from a database of just under 10,000 names. Now I just have to work on
standardizing the formatting so the citations look good as well as being
credible.

I created a new Legacy file copy of data I wanted to post, stripped all

contact me I can provide the sources and notes that I have. Then posted that
data on Rootsweb. Almost no one has contacted me for additional info. One or

I don't publish sources in my online family tree precisely because I
want the viewer to contact me. He/she might be a distant relative that
can help me as much as I can help them. If the viewer chooses to copy my
info without asking about sources ... not my problem.

And like others, I might use an online family tree as a clue to further
research. If the tree does not contain sources, I will attempt to
contact the compiler.

Re: [LegacyUG] Alternate Name vs. AKA Event

2010-08-16 Thread jay_ingalls
One example of the name of a person changing for the same person or
descendants over the years is Adelbert became Delbert in a later generation
and Adelbert was called (nicknamed) Bert and Delbert was called (nicknamed)
Del. These changes have shown up in a number of families. Having the all
versions of names in the "Alternate Names" field helps identify some
families when using the Name Index.

Census records often have different spellings of given and surnames from one
census to the next. Entering all of them in the "Alternate Names" field
allows me to easily swap the alternate name for the "main" name when I
decide which one was correct or used the most often.

We have heard a number of times that the spelling of names in the U.S. was
not important until WWI.

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy file on a Kindle or other tablet device?

2010-08-16 Thread Dwain Rosenberger
Marilyn, as Leon pointed out Families works on the iPad, iPhone plus the
iPod touch. I use it on the iPad and for doing research away from my home
PC, it provides you with the ability to add/change/revise information in the
field. It also provides all the information in your PC database, such as
pictures/events/notes/sources, plus all the normal family information you
have entered.

You can also add any new information you find during your research,
including photo's/scan's etc., that you have available on the device.

This app was written for Legacy, so anyone using Legacy will have no
problem's interfacing with Families. It's a 5-Star app for Legacy users.

Re: [LegacyUG] AniMap

2010-08-16 Thread Tim Rosenlof
Hi,

"Map My Family" does about the same as "Legacy Mapping". It does what is
say's in the description. I use it more than Legacy Mapping. Others on
this list differ. Keep in mind that both "Map My Family" and "Legacy
Mapping" use *current* locations, not historical.

AniMap uses *historical* locations. You can plot
cities/cemeteries/railroads/military/post offices/etc... You search for
those locations in a sitefinder, then plot it on the map. It will show
you which county of your ancestors were in for a certain time. For
instance, my ancestor lived in Lehi, Utah. I use SiteFinder to search
for Lehi. I can then plot Lehi on the map, and see which county Lehi was
in, in a certain year from 1849, historically. It has a run feature that
you can just set, then sit back and watch from year to year. I can
record which county they lived in *historically*. I would enter Lehi,
Utah, Utah for the location in my database in 1890. It's great for
following your ancestors through different cities they lived and
*correctly* enter the historical data. It also shows the county seat.

I would also recommend you look at Centennia Historical Atlas.
I do research in Czechoslovakia. It has so many boundary changes through
the years.

The further back in history you go, the more documents, books, genealogies,
IPMs, Close Rolls, etc., that you research, the more essential it is to have
all the alternate names in your Name List of Index.

You will never have a clue that some of the people mentioned are related to
anyone in your database unless you have these old, often foreign, often
foreign alliterations, and names changed to match a place or estate, or
takingyour wife's name, to say nothing of earldoms.

And, as far as long-time "Englished" names, many of the spellings are not
even close to how they are spelled now! After all, English spelling did not
begin to be standardized until after Johnson's Dictionary of 1755.

I don't actually understand why people see a need to include alternate
spellings in the AKA fields. I record alternate spellings as and where they
occur, so this might be in the Event Description or the BMD Notes and in the
Source Citation.

People weren't usually "known by" these alternate spellings, they were just
something that cropped up sometimes when their name was written down.

Families allows you to edit the file on the iPhone/iPad and then transfer
(write a new Legacy file) back to your computer. Families is the best one
to work directly with Legacy files to include pictures and all events.

The others mostly transfer a GEDCom file to the iPhone app and then you can
view the information and see a tree or report. The screens are too small on
the iPhone to be of much use when viewing, but you do have all of your
genealogy information at your finger tips.

The Tree-to-Go works directly on-line with your family tree information on
Ancestry.com and allows editing your information on the web site.

For Legacy users, the Families App is the best one to work with.

Keep in mind that all of these apps lack many of the features you have come
to expect on your desktop Legacy software, but they are very useful and I
would highly recommend all of them. GedView is probably my 2nd choice for
an app on the iPhone/iPad.

Good luck.

Hopefully, Legacy will eventually put a "Opt In" choice so the default

Not that I'm aware of. The only way would be to combine selecting 3
columns (or best fit) and changing the font for the children's list so
that you can see 3 columns. Doesn't help with 16-20 though.

The program would need to be changed to restore the position of the
scroll-bar. Use the Home tab and then click on 'Suggest a new feature'
within the Support block, to see if Millennium can accommodate this.

Right-click to edit one of the 11-20 children
Click Save

Then, the family screen seems to refresh and display children 1-10 rather than
continuing to show children 11-20. More often than not, I want to continue to
view children 11-20.

Is there a setting I can use to stop that from happening so that I continue to
view children 11-20? I realize that its only one click on the scroll bar to go
back to viewing children 11-20 but when you have to edit 4+ children on that
screen it gets to be frustrating.

Perhaps there is another view which would avoid the problem all together?

Thanks,

Jennifer

RE: [LegacyUG] Date question

2010-08-16 Thread Brian L. Lightfoot
The problem is that Legacy does not recognize the word "Present" as a valid
date. I believe that the only word the Legacy recognizes (accepts) is the word
"unknown" (excluding all prefixes). When you stop and think about, you'll
realize why the word PRESENT is not valid. What if you create the record today
with the word PRESENT and 10 years later somebody is reading a report generated
by your file? The word PRESENT at that time may no longer be truthful thus
Legacy is telling you that it is "bad". The only truthful thing you can do in
your circumstance such as Occupation and Residence is to enter what you really
know for sure and that is "02/21/1942 to 08/2010" or "from 02/21/1942 to
08/2010". Probably not what you wanted to see but the data will remain valid in
perpetuity.

More info about entering date ranges can be found in the HELP file. Just enter
"Dates, Ranges" in the keyword search.

There is nothing wrong with the "02/21/1942" portion of your date. Different
users may be seeing this displayed differently on their family file such as
with dashes or spaces between the day, the word for the month instead of
number, etc, but this is all due to the settings on the DATES tab of Customize
Settings. You can avoid discovering these bad dates after-the-fact by turning
on Date Checking/Report only unrecognized dates.

Having created the To Do item, simply click on the Source icon (on the To
Do List tab) and delete the Source

I can't be *sure* this is the right way to do it, but I have just tried
entering a date as "from 21 February 1942 - date" and Legacy had no
objection to that.

I don't know which country you are from (USA?), but I am presuming you are
family with the phrase "... to date" meaning "... to the present." (I
know some Engliah phraseology isn't common across the British, American
and Australian versions of the language.)

You will note I did not enter my date in the mm/dd/ format which you
used. I know putting month before day is common in the US but it is not
universal and that format can cause confusion where the dd part is a
number less than 13. I'm not trying to tell you you should change your
method, but just pointing this out by way of a Public Service
Announcement!

I have several events (i.e. Occupation and Residence) in which I use the

RE: [LegacyUG] information from other online trees

2010-08-16 Thread juliasgenes
In addition to this, in the "Master Source Definition" window, there's a
drop-down menu to note the type of source - along with the Bibles, Military
Records, and Vital Records, I made a type called "Unproven Statements" for info
from other people's trees and stuff from "Ancestral Files" and the "IGI".

Re: [LegacyUG] Families 1.0.1 now available - & smart phone geotagging

2010-08-16 Thread juliasgenes
Don't forget that photos taken with smart phones will embed GPS info into the
file by default. If you upload photos of family members at their own houses,
your expensive electronics, or your pricey new car onto a website or to
twitter, a person can use software to read that GPS info and locate your house
& your goods.
