RE: [LegacyUG] Possible Bug with Events in Descendant Reports
Thanks Brian! Stan From: br...@legacyfamilytree.com To: LegacyUserGroup@LegacyUsers.com Subject: Re: [LegacyUG] Possible Bug with Events in Descendant Reports Date: Tue, 8 Feb 2011 00:47:39 -0500 Stan, I got the file and was able to duplicate the situation with it. I traced the single spacing to an option on the report screen. In the lower left there is a single space children option check box. With that turned on, not only are the lists of children single spaced but, if a child is not going to be in the next generation and all their data is included in their list entry, the events in their life are also single spaced. I will submit a problem report but the programmers may respond that this is exactly what should happen when children are single spaced. [LegacyUG] Unknown spouse
I can't remember how to remove an unknown spouse and just leave it blank. I have a woman who had three children to three different men and two of the men's names are known but not the third. How do I link a child to the mother without having an unknown father with a RIN? Re: [LegacyUG] Unknown spouse
There are a few ways. One, if you have a mother with no father attached, and simply create a child, no RIN will be assigned to the unknown father. An MRIN will be, which is unavoidable. Two, if you create a unlinked child and then link it to a mother only, the child will attach to the mother only. Again, if the mother has no existing husband, none wil be created and thus no RIN, but as above, an MRIN will be (mother + unknown). Re: [LegacyUG] Unknown spouse
After I hit send, I thought of something else you might want to know. Because the children were from different fathers, you may wish to show them as half siblings. To do this you'll have to temporarily create fathers, then delete them. Create father #1 (call him anything) and create child #1. Create father #2 (same deal) and create child #2. Delete each of the fathers. You'll note that the mother will still list two spouses (both unknown) and have two MRINs, but no RINs will be assigned to the non-existant fathers. Depending on which MRIN you show, the other children will appear as ½ siblings. I am coming to this discussion late, but since I don't see answers to James' specific questions, let me try to address some of them. I think the Legacy To Do feature is one of the most powerful, and probably underutilized, features of Legacy. While I'm still experimenting to determine exactly when and how I will use it, I have 3 examples of printouts directly from Legacy I'm happy to share. If interested please contact me off-list. (These example reports were printed to PDF before the bug that didn't print sources at the end of the report was fixed). (1) Research Plan (one can change the report heading to this or any other title): For FHL work (or any other repository where there is an online catalog), I copy and paste the catalog entry into the To Do Description field as part of my planning at home before I go to the repository. I like to format the report with lined Notes in case I want to print a hard copy and take notes by hand, but there are multiple ways to set up the report. (2) A few pages from a Research Log with Notes for multiple people in one locality: On this trip, I experimented with abstracting/transcribing positive results directly into Events for the relevant individual, and just made a brief note of what I found (or didn't find) in the Results field on the To Do item. I also experimented with extracting info regarding people of the same surname (or related surnames) about whom I know nothing (or who weren't the target of this particular search) directly into the Results field of the To Do item. I like the ability to use either the Results or the Description fields to make notes about the nature of the source, whether I carefully studied the source or due to time constraints just did a cursory check of an index, etc. I think both the Description and Results fields allow for lots of information; I've never reached the character limit and I've entered lots of info. The major problem is that they've not added the Bold, Italics, etc. buttons to these fields; if you want to italicize or bold something, you have to use embedded codes. Note: Although I didn't do so in this example, I could just as easily have fully transcribed the positive findings into the To Do Results field, then copied and pasted into Events for the relevant individual(s) when I got home. Or, I could attach (3) Research Log with Notes: This example illustrates a continuously printed log (rather than one item per page) for one category of record (Preliminary Histories) for a surname (not attached to a specific individual). When I find a positive result, I create the source citation, then copy and paste it from the citation preview screen to the Description field. I got in the habit of doing this before the source citation bug was fixed, and will keep doing it because I want to see the source on the same page as my notes as to what I found. To me, the best part of the To Do feature is the flexibility for how I pull out the data. With all the tagging and filter choices that are available, I could pull out a report for all Marriage Records for all Hancocks in all localities, or just Court Records for one person in all localities, or everything I've ever done in Centre Co. PA for everyone, etc. (BTW, if you don't like the default category labels, you can add your own). None of this will likely make much sense without seeing the examples, but yes, James, there is a way (actually multiple ways) in Legacy to do what it is I think you are asking. I find, however, that I usually have to make a physical print-out of the To Do items (both before and after I go to the repository) to clearly visualize/understand what I found (or didn't find), as opposed to just seeing them onscreen. A couple of years ago when I tried to download more than one email picture at a time Legacy came up when it was not involved at all. However, after backing up my PAF genealogy on the OLD computer to a memory stick and restoring them on the NEW computer the files have a Legacy logo even though they are PAF files. The heading is: The Legacy logo , Aulerich Family Tree, 2/33/2011 9:25PM, PAF File 140KB. Make sure the person with two parents are in the primary position (husband or wife) in the Family View Abut the 8th icon from the left, next to the house icon, are two heads for the parents. Left click on this icon. You will see a list of all parents. Highlight the wrong parents and click on unlink. That should do it. Re: [LegacyUG] Adding an Event
I think it depends on what you plan to do with the GEDCOM file. I do not think you will lose any data, but if you are going to import that into something else, the data may not show up the same way. I've found that the notes portion of the event when entered into Legacy help build sort of a narrative in combination with the description, data, and location fields at the top. When uploaded to Ancestry.com (for example) the description, date and location stick with the event, but the text in the notes are added as an unsourced citation. Not what I want or expected to happen. I'm not clear if that is a problem with the Legacy export (I'm thinking it is, because I can edit the gedcom moving NOTE tags to CONC tags instead and I get the results I'd expect), or Ancestry import. I'm also not sure if the same would hold true for importing into some other application. If interested, my gedcom macros are on my blog. [LegacyUG] Repeating info and direct line
Yeh I finally got through. Hi there I was wondering if it is possible to use one of the F keys to repeat info when typing into the Family page. ie: If I type St George, Sheffield, Wry, Eng can I then say push F3 or similar to repeat this info on another Family page for another family member. I know you can start typing but often you might have several St George address's and need to go through them all to get the right one. Also is it possible to get a printout for a Direct line of a family only so I can sift out the ones I need info for. I am finding it hard to do this and wonder if there is an easy route for it. After the window finishes loading find the file extension for a PAF file that you want to change and highlight it and click on the change program button then locate the program that you want to use to open the file with. Now, on a new computer, Lenovo and Windows 7, OE, I have no trouble downloadinging several email pictures at a time. Re: [LegacyUG] Repeating info and direct line
Gwen, There are a number of ways of replicating something which has been previously typed. For example on the Individuals Screen right clicking the name of any field will give you the last 10 entries eg. right click on the in next to a location field will give you the last 10 entries for that field. When I first got the program, years ago, I right clicked on everything just to see what happens! It sounds, also, that you may not be familiar with the Source Clipboard, and i would suggest that you read this up in the Help Files and try it out. Gwen When in the individual's information screen you can use the repeat button on the lower left of that screen to repeat the info of a particular field. Does that work for you? Re: [LegacyUG] Printing INDEX View
It won't look like the Index View, but you can print it by going to the Name List and clicking on Print. You can also create a Search List of those individuals who do not have a birth or death date and then print just that search list if you wish. Up to 30 fields can be included if you're printing from the Deluxe Edition. [LegacyUG] Printing problem
I have a Canon Pro 9000 printer - great for doing A3 charts etc. I have attempted to print a blank A3 Pedigree chart, but cannot make the actual form stretch across the page. I have no problem with the printer set-up; the A3 size is clearly visible. The problem is with the actual form - the Pedigree chart still shows as being on an A4, even though the paper and the printer is set to A3, thus leaving a very large amount of blank paper. Can anyone help please? [LegacyUG] Missing RINs
I have questions about a topic in the archives, so I included previous messages below: http://www.mail-archive.com/legacyusergroup@legacyusers.com/msg04740.html === I like to keep certain families within a range of RIN's. So when I import a new family I set the new member RINs to begin after the highest RIN. To add family members to a previous family, I select the correct RINs in the range of that family. Before I import into my main database, I import a GEDCOM and tell Legacy to renumber RINs and MRINs starting at ___. I select a number where I want the family to be in my main database. Next I import that Legacy file into my main database and the RINs will mesh within the range I wanted. I have been doing this for the past year of so without any problems. The past few days I had been using tblXI to find the holes in the RIN list to place people, this was a very nice shortcut without manually looking for gaps in the RIN range. Something went wrong and the tblXI results no longer gave realistic numbers. I have tested 18 previous database versions with varying results using Ltools and Legacy. One of my files (97 individuals) has huge numbers of unused/skipped RINs. This number is calculated as follows: (highest RIN - number of individuals) (14,339 - 97) = 14,242 unused in the database, which tblXI reports as only 500. I think this file may be the one I exported a persons descendants from Legacy with about 50 people and added another 47 or so and used IntelliShare to import it back into my main database. There are about 500 unused RINs in the range of 9,000 to 10,000 in my main database. And 500 is the typical number [incorrectly?] reported in tblXI for most of the files. I do have one database in which the unused counts are much closer i.e. RIN count = 26,944 - 19,133 individuals, calculated = 7,811 vs tblXI = 7,303. I have used a WinXP laptop with Legacy version 7.4.0.45 and a desktop WinVista-64 with Legacy version 7.5.0.47 to enable and disableReuse abandoned RINs. I check tblXI before turning on Reuse abandoned RINs and then again after turning it off. I also did a File Maintenance Check/Repair on some of the files and didn't see any difference, but I don't remember which files I this did this. I didn't do a test on tblXM like tblXI, but the MRINs appear to be in the range I would expect. Has anyone had any experience similar to mine? Is there a difference between deleted vs missing/unused RINs? Maybe tblXI is for RINs that been used and then deleted? Maybe this is just an inconvenience for me and there isn't anything wrong with my database. And I should just bite the bullet and go back to determining the missing RINs manually. Thanks for any comments you may have about this. Laird Re: [LegacyUG] Missing RINs Dennis M . Kowallek Wed, 19 May 2010 07:16:55 -0700 On Wed, 19 May 2010 00:27:00 -0500, Robert Carneal USA carnea...@roadrunner.com wrote: Does anyone know of a way to get Legacy to generate a report listing the RINs that are empty? Then the report tells me 7 is not used? Robert (and others): If you have Reuse abandoned RINs turned on, then tblXI contains a list of the missing RINs. You can run the following query in Access, LTools, OOBase, etc.: SELECT tblXI.DeletedID FROM tblXI ORDER BY tblXI.DeletedID If you do not have Reuse abandoned RINs turned on, you can turn it on temporarily. This will cause tblXI to be rebuilt. Then you can run the above SELECT query. When you are done you can turn off Reuse abandoned RINs. -- Dennis Kowallek (LTools) http://zippersoftware.com/ltools http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ltools Legacy User Group guidelines: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Etiquette.asp Archived messages after Nov. 21 2009: http://www.mail-archive.com/legacyusergroup@legacyusers.com/ Archived messages from old mail server - before Nov. 21 2009: http://www.mail-archive.com/legacyusergroup@legacyfamilytree.com/ Online technical support: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Help.asp To unsubscribe: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/LegacyLists.asp
