If your reasons for wanting to split your file are for
reporting/charting reasons, I'd suggest that you don't split your main
file. Keep everyone together in the one file so you can take advantage
of things like a consistent set of locations, master sources, etc. And
when you find that your mother is related to your father via a route
that isn't their marriage to each other, you won't be wanting to combine
them into one 'cos it's already there. There's a good discussion at
http://legacynews.typepad.com/legacy_news/2006/03/your_legacy_dat.html

When you want to report/chart only a section of your family tree, and
you can't do it with a focus group or tagging or whatever (there are
lots of options!), make a copy of your tree, unlink the people you don't
want to include from the people you do want to include, and delete the
"unwanted" ones (I posted on how to do this within the past week). Then
you're left with a file containing just the people you want to work
with, and your original data file remains intact.

We've been talking about this just in the past week, so you may like to
take a look at the archives if you missed the discussions. See the link
at the end of this and every post.

Hope this helps. :-)

Kind Regards,
Wendy

Re: Re[2]: [LegacyUG] Separating Family branches

2011-08-27 Thread Ron Ferguson

I should have added that Legacy Charts only allow ancestors and descendants
plus spouses, so you would not be able to include the parents of spouses to
direct line descendants. I have an old FTM program which allows all individuals
in the file to be included in a chart, and when I wish to do something along
the lines you suggest then I tag as I described create a GEDCOM and export to
that program.

Ah! Advanced Tagging – right click on the tag boxes in Family View will enable
you to tag all your father’s ancestors, but siblings you will have to tag
separately and all branches/twigs. Or you could go to the oldest
gg-grandparents (all if them if required) and tag their descendants and any
2nd, 3rd, 4th etc uncles/aunts and their descendants.

So without a lot of messing the answer is not within Legacy.

I am trying to figure out how to best separate the two sides of the family so
that I can create Gedcoms to share with the two sides of the family. Cousins
on my father's side and on my mother's side.

It seems that it might be easier to do charts, etc. with them separated.

Is there a way to tag a the records without going into each person? For
instance is there a "global" tag for everyone in the my father's tree,
siblings, aunts, uncles, etc.

I don't see why it would be excluded for English/US (we've been known to
use them, too -- sometimes correctly) and included with other languages,
but I've pretty much given up looking for logic in Legacy.

Thank you so much, Dennis! That works perfectly.

As for your earlier observation about Preposition_English.lst and Legacy
versions, I have only one Legacy folder. When I update, I just let the
Legacy download do its thing. Whether or not it installed 7.5 over 6, I
have no idea.

Dennis,
My V7.5 has the file Preposition_English.lst with a created date of 10/11/2010.
I first installed my Legacy in December of 2009. Perhaps that created date
might be close to one of the Legacy updates. It is the only file with that
creation date.

[LegacyUG] Down Ampney not recognized as a location

2011-08-27 Thread CE Wood
Further to my comment below, I followed the Legacy Help instructions and
removed "down" from the list of default Location Prepositions. Didn't help.

Next step in Help said to check the box, "Remove the common prep" on the
Sort page of Master Locations. Didn't help.

I know I can put a non-breaking space in front of "Down Ampney," but then it
doesn't sort in the Master Location list!

How do I do this when Legacy Help doesn't help?

Subject: [LegacyUG] Re: Adding Relationships to Ancestor Report; Changing
Standard Wording for "was born in"

Hi, all,

I have two quick questions that I have not been able to find the answer for in
the FAQs, that I hope someone onlist may have already worked out.

1. Is it possible to add relationships to an Ancestor Report to be printed out?
I am going to print a report for my mother, and would like to be able to let
her see immediately how she is related to each person in the report, since many
of them are cousins/aunts/uncles and not just direct line ancestors.
Complicating it is that I'm not starting with her, but rather a few generations
back. Anyone know if this is possible, without having to manually enter the
information as an event for each individual?

2. For ease of my own viewing while working, I've entered "of ---" in the birth
location field, since it is a location, even if not where the person may have
been born, it seems a logical place to me. This works for me for viewing, but
when printing the report, I end up with "He was born in of York, Yorkshire,
England." Is there any way to simply remove the "he was born in" language
before printing? I've tried all the normal customizing spots, but to no avail.

Thanks for your help,

Lorraine

OK. I only checked the parent child and source type tables before
generalizing. Obviously you will have to check each table to make a
definitive list.

Re: [LegacyUG] Temple Master List duplicates

2011-08-27 Thread Brian/Support
Ron,

I just checked the temple list in my copy of Legacy and did not see your
duplication. Perhaps your temple name duplicates came from a GEDCOM you
imported.

Do you use the LDS options?
Have you imported temple ordinances from Family Search?
How are temples named in the Family Search site? I am not LDS so I
cannot access the LDS data at Family Search.

2011-08-27 Thread Brian/Support
The Master lists which can be considered categorical and which have
default values like the parent child relationships, child status, source
type, etc. do not allow you to combine a non-blank value with the blank
entry at the top of the list.

The tables which are built of user entered values like the locations,
sources etc. do allow you to combine a value with the blank entry.

[LegacyUG] Re: Adding Relationships to Ancestor Report; Changing Standard Wording for "was born in"

2011-08-27 Thread Lorraine
Hi, all,

I have two quick questions that I have not been able to find the answer for
in the FAQs, that I hope someone onlist may have already worked out.

1. Is it possible to add relationships to an Ancestor Report to be printed
out? I am going to print a report for my mother, and would like to be able
to let her see immediately how she is related to each person in the report,
since many of them are cousins/aunts/uncles and not just direct line
ancestors. Complicating it is that I'm not starting with her, but rather a
few generations back. Anyone know if this is possible, without having to
manually enter the information as an event for each individual?

2. For ease of my own viewing while working, I've entered "of ---" in the
birth location field, since it is a location, even if not where the person
may have been born, it seems a logical place to me. This works for me for
viewing, but when printing the report, I end up with "He was born in of
York, Yorkshire, England." Is there any way to simply remove the "he was
born in" language before printing? I've tried all the normal customizing
spots, but to no avail.

Thanks for your help,

Lorraine

That is odd. AFAIK that is the only master list that works that way. I
think you should be allowed to combine other rows with that row. I can
see why it wouldn't let you do it the other way around though.

I would report it as a bug. If it isn't then support will get back to
you and let you know why it isn't.

I would wait for an answer before doing anything, but the two UPDATE
queries would look like...

UPDATE tblCR INNER JOIN tblCP ON tblCR.IDCPDad = tblCP.IDCP SET
tblCR.IDCPDad = 1 WHERE tblCP.CPRelation="Biological"

and

UPDATE tblCR INNER JOIN tblCP ON tblCR.IDCPMom = tblCP.IDCP SET
tblCR.IDCPMom = 1 WHERE tblCP.CPRelation="Biological"

Hi Terry,

Your Access work looks great to me, also. I too was wondering how to get this
type of information out of Legacy - as is. It just isn't there. You certainly
have a great idea here. I think you should approach Legacy for an Add-On. I
myself am not experienced enough, I think, in Access to import your code since

I'd be happy to be an experimenter to attempt such an import and would be happy
to report my results to you! At the very least, my husband who also is a

Good luck with your approach to Legacy!

Re: [LegacyUG] Getting rid of commas

2011-08-27 Thread Ron Ferguson
Anne,

With respect, I am a Lancastrian and my family is of Cumberland descent, and if
it wasn’t for the fact that I have some experience of genealogy I would have
some difficulty in recognising those locations.

I too set the Location List to read from right to left, but I put the Street as
a separate field. That aside, Liverpool, Lancashire, England is the location,
there is no field between Liverpool and Lancashire. As you can see, I also have
no problem in going directly to Liverpool Lancashire. The problem I see is when
you have district, of Liverpool eg. Everton, Liverpool, Lancashire, England, or
Wavertree, Liverpool, Lancashire, England, which one should also have for
Liverpool, btw.

I’m afraid that I simply find your system for our locations confusing, and our
lack of a system is confusing enough, but then “Whatever works for you...”.

Ron,

The benefits I find are ease of use.

If I have many entries for the same town/city ( I am not hung up on what a town
is or how big it is I just use common usage)

I put

Liverpool, , Lancashire, England
Liverpool-9 King St, , Lancashire, England
Liverpool-St Peter's Church, , Lancashire, England

This way when I enter a new Liverpool location I immediately go to

Liverpool, , Lancashire, England

from there I click on the arrow and can check if I already have an entry for an
address for that town. If not I quickly create a new one selecting and editing
e.g. Liverpool, , Lancashire, England

When I go to the location list I have all my entries for each town together.

I have quite a few farm names or farm settlements so

Longtown-Oakbank, , Cumberland, England

I use the third position for counties or states whichever is relevant to that
country.

When I sort I can immediately see e.g. all my Cumberland entries.

I use the second position for suburbs in large cities.

Camberwell, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia

It works for me.

Then the only way to overcome the problem would be to use an rtf file and
search and replace ", ,". ?

Is that right ? This can only be done in a few reports though ?

Can Legacy find a way to solve this problem so that non US users can benefit
from the 4 place system ?

Re: [LegacyUG] Getting rid of commas

2011-08-27 Thread Anne Hollingshead
Ron,

The benefits I find are ease of use.

If I have many entries for the same town/city ( I am not hung up on what
a town is or how big it is I just use common usage)

I put

Liverpool, , Lancashire, England
Liverpool-9 King St, , Lancashire, England
Liverpool-St Peter's Church, , Lancashire, England

This way when I enter a new Liverpool location I immediately go to

Liverpool, , Lancashire, England

from there I click on the arrow and can check if I already have an entry
for an address for that town. If not I quickly create a new one
selecting and editing e.g. Liverpool, , Lancashire, England

When I go to the location list I have all my entries for each town together.

I have quite a few farm names or farm settlementsso

Longtown-Oakbank, , Cumberland, England

I use the third position for counties or states whichever is relevant to
that country.

When I sort I can immediately see e.g. all my Cumberland entries.

I use the second position for suburbs in large cities.

Camberwell, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia

It works for me.

Anne

RE: [LegacyUG] Location for Bristol England

2011-08-27 Thread Carl Cox

When mailing a letter that goes to someone else within the same city,
"city" was often used rather than writing out the city and state names.
But that cannot be used now because the sorting is often done in another
city. Us older folks have seen strange things.

And, of course, New Yorkers seem to treat the City as if it were some
independent city-state. Many of the records that I have from my family's
early years in America simply refers to neighborhoods and they do not even
mention the state. One old letter to my grandmother is addressed to her, the
name of the hotel she lived at, and "City". No street address, name of the
"City" or state at all. Apparently the post office delivered it.

Anyhow, I think that the 4 name "American" convention is actually a western
convention. Back east I do see a lot more variation.
Not every location in the USA is a "city". In Ohio, when I was growing up,
any populated place with less than 5000 inhabitants was a Village. After
5000 you could become a City. Also, in states that use the township system
a specific location could be Deerfield (Twp), Mason (village or city),
Warren (County), Ohio (State or territory), USA. Of course there are also
Indian Reservations which can have interesting location names. And the
pre-USA locations have been discussed several times on the list.

You should be able to do this in Legacy. Go to View | Master Lists |
Child Status (or is it Child-Parent Relationship) and select the
"Biological" status. Then click the "Combine..." button and select the
blank status at the top of the list.
