[LegacyUG] Correct file path for media
As a general rule you should keep your data away from your programs. If you only have one partition, it doesn't really matter. However, if you have more than one drive then it is better to keep all your data on one drive, well away from the operating system and programs. That way, if you have to reinstall the OS (or upgrade to a new one) your data are safe. My layout is C:\ a relatively small SSD for OS, programs and C:\Legacy D:\ 1TB HDD for data, including D:\Genealogy\ which has everything to do with Legacy (except for the programs etc.) in sub folders such as data\, Videos\, Pictures\. E:\ Another 1TB HDD for other stuff Now, I can simply back up EVERYTHING from my data drives onto external 1TB HDD's and can update or reinstall the OS without losing anything important. [LegacyUG] Correct file path for media
Hello, Simple question: what should be the file path where I keep media such are scans of vital records, census etc used in sources. I dont have sound or video. Currently my path is C:\Legacy\Docs.. but when I have to relink a scan that displays a question mark of a missing file,it opens the Data folder, then when I relink the scan,I find I have to relink ALL sources and people this particular scan is attached to. Re: [LegacyUG] Crowded Legacy folder
Not necessarily. You can delete the log files EXCEPT for Install.log. That keeps track of the installation and you won't be able to uninstall without jumping through some hoops. Don't delete the GeoCountryCodes.txt, GeoCountyCodes.txt, GeoExtraCodes.tx, GeoStateCodes.txt, NameSplittingRules.txt (oops -too late - hopefully an update or reinstall will restore that) or the license.txt files Don't delete the USR files, the TRN files, DBM files, graphic files, CHW or CHM files or HTM files or the LIC files. In other words - yes, you can delete the error logs, but that's all. One should never mess about with deleting files in a program's folder Sincerely, Sherry Technical Support Legacy Family Tree On Fri, Jan 20, 2012 at 5:44 PM, Brian Lehman wrote: > Boy,that was close, Thanks for the info! > The only things I deleted were Text Document in notepad. > Things like: NameSplittingRules, Missing docs,RINLog, and pages > referring to old trees that have been deleted for a while. > And error logs, I assume notepad documents are ALL OK to delete, Legacy > will add them as needed,is this correct? > Thanks again and take care, > Brian Legacy User Group guidelines: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Etiquette.asp Archived messages after Nov. 21 2009: http://www.mail-archive.com/legacyusergroup@legacyusers.com/ Archived messages from old mail server - before Nov. 21 2009: http://www.mail-archive.com/legacyusergroup@legacyfamilytree.com/ Online technical support: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Help.asp Follow Legacy on Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/LegacyFamilyTree) and on our blog (http://news.LegacyFamilyTree.com). I keep several backups on a flash drive (each day as I finish entering data I back up that day's work, which is day/time stamped; I then delete the earliest of the other back-ups). I'm also backing up everything on my computer to Mozy once a day. Perhaps I could do a check/repair on the 2nd most recent back-up (or one of the others) to see what crops up? Marianne, Very true. If your current database has errors in it and you have never run check/repair, then all prior backups are suspect because they probably contained the errors when they were generated. Others have stated that they would backup before check/repair which is not a bad idea but based on the above, if errors are found and fixed, then backups of the cleaned database would be preferable to backups which might contain errors. How would you experts do this? Use > custom events? As I see it, the problem is that Legacy is "centred around" families, not locations, and you say you want Reports or Trees that are "centred around" certain locations. One way of tackling it, and it may not be the best way, but it's all that comes to me so far, is to create a separate Legacy family file where instead of entering people to create a tree , you enter farms! Put the numbers in the UserID field and the create Residence (or other name) Events for each family who lived in that farm. So you might start with Farm 26 entered in the "Father" position with Events showing which families lived there at which dates. Then if the farm splits, enter "sons" with user IDs 26/1, 26/2 etc. You could then run, say, a Descendant Book Report which instead of showing a series of families with their Events would show a series of related farms and which family lived there at different times. I hope that makes some sort of sense. Everything's right where it belongs. Sorry Ron, but I thought it was pretty subtle and I like the contrast. But I just un-checked the box to compose in html. Did it still come across with the colored background? And thanks - the other Ron - for that answer - so looks like I should just use Yorkshire, not Yorkshire County, if I understood you correctly. [LegacyUG] Farm-centric report/tree?
A lot of my family comes from small farms. Such farms ususally starts (or my records do anyway) around 1500-1600 as one big farm, and is then split into smaller farms as more children arrives. Farms have a Gnr, like 26, and when split they get a bnr as well, like 26/1, 26/2, 26/3 and so on. Sometimes they use an lnr as well, like 93a, 93b etc, and sometimes the numbers changes too :( Some of my ancestors moved around a lot, while other branches lived at the same farm continuously for 450 years (and still going strong). I would like to make some reports/trees that are centred around these farms, to see who lived where and when. Would this be possible in Legacy? Or are there other charting programs or addons that will be able to do this? I've been fiddling around trying to find a way that works, but am not quite happy. How would you experts do this? Jerry, With all due respect, I know that the list administrator made the decision to allow HTML on the Legacy list ( a decision that I for one feel was one of the worst decisions ever made on this list), but is really necessary to send messages with a colored background? Re: [LegacyUG] England Places
Jerry, Yes, I’m still up – it’s early yet! Yes they are both counties. In actual fact ‘shire’ is the old name for for ‘county’, although not all counties end with it, eg. Essex, Cornwall etc.. In England the only county which is prefaced by ‘County’ is County Durham. Ron Taylor wrote: "External drive backups are valuable but will not provide a "saved version" of your file should it be necessary to return to an earlier edition of the database. If you use incremental backups you can keep as many historic versions as you like, with the relevant pictures, media, gedcoms etc. And by using automatic scheduling you ensure that you never forget to backup or mess it up. John Clifford -Original Message- From: Ron Taylor [mailto:doit4...@yahoo.com] Sent: 20 January 2012 14:10 To: LegacyUserGroup@LegacyUsers.com Subject: RE: [LegacyUG] Check/Repair The Legacy backup collects all the various pieces of the database into a zip file container. That zip file is smaller because of the techniques used in the zip process but the container also preserves the file integrity. A zip file will not open if it is corrupted or partial. External drive backups are valuable but will not provide a "saved version" of your file should it be necessary to return to an earlier edition of the database. The external file would only be a backup of the last version saved. At times, an error is only discovered days after the problem occurred and the current file and the last backup are both infected. Check/Repair is a very necessary procedure on any database. It determines if file structures are properly connected. It does not repair data errors which may be discovered in various problem reports. It does not change data. It may remove incorrectly linked marriages, etc. Anyone who fails to run check/repair on a regular basis is going to be surprised to find that the computer programming is not flawless. Even if check/repair never finds and fixes problems, it still needs to be run. As a general rule, I believe that a clean Check/Repair should be completed just prior to a backup so that if the backup needs to be restored, it can be considered to be a clean database without structural errors. How would Intellishare work for that? It should merge all records that are the same, and present you with the changes. I think it works automatically. Re: [LegacyUG] Fw: Recommendations on Website/Sharing Information
Hi Carolyn. I'm sure you will get a thousand different opinions, but quite a few people who use Legacy on the desktop use a thing called TNG (The Next Generation of Genealogy Sitebuilding) on their websites. Legacy is the best desktop program, but TNG has better features when it comes to the application to the website. TNG can do all that and more and after the initial outlay of $29.95 for the software (one time until a major upgrade), the cost can be as low as about $4.99 per month on the hosting sites that TNG recommends. You can use Legacy and transfer to your website via a GEDCOM. Good luck! [LegacyUG] Fw: Recommendations on Website/Sharing Information
From: Carolyn White Subject: Recommendations on Website/Sharing Information To: LegacyUserGroup@LegacyUsers.com Date: Friday, January 20, 2012, 10:46 AM My quite small family history organizations wants to create at reasonable cost ($5 a month or less) some centralized communications mechanism for family announcements (deaths, births, upcoming reunions) and family history (GEDCOM) files. Several of us have different computerized info on different formats (I use Legacy; others use other programs). Does anyone have experience with and can recommend a host website or similar function that we can consider? It would be particularly helpful if you have had experience in uploading Legacy files to such a hosting-type mechanism. Thanks in advance for any responses. Re: [LegacyUG] Checking for file DIFFERENCES
Hi Laurie, I really agree with you about the difficulty of version control. I have complained on this LUG about Legacy changing the file date stamp even if you just view a database. Seems as though this isn't a Legacy problem but a problem with the Microsoft database system they use. In my case my database got corrupted and I needed to compare the Legacy zipped backup files to see which version one was good. Sometimes when I know I am just browsing I will create a copy of the data file to use for viewing so the real file doesn't get a new date stamp. This is what I do to compare file1 vs file2: Do this for both file1 and file2. In Legacy, click File>Export To>GEDCOM File A window will open-in the top on the Options tab Produce file for: (select) Legacy, Character Set ANSI then click Select File Name and START EXPORT Now you have saved two GEDCOM files which you can compare. I use WinMerge which is free/open source, user friendly and presents the differences quite well. You can get WinMerge here: http://winmerge.org/ When viewing the GEDCOM data note the Update/modified date in the GED file. This isn't the best solution, i.e. it doesn't do a direct compare of Sourcewriter sources. And likely some other things I am not aware of. I spent a lot of time trying to do this. I bought MudCreek GENMatcher hoping it would do what I wanted but it didn't. Re: [LegacyUG] Check/Repair
Please note that there is a warning to do a backup *before* doing the check/repair. That's becuase this can make some changes in the Family File which you're not happy with and you can always delete the file after the check/repair and restore the backup. It doesn't happen often, but we do see it. Backups should be done before *any* global change to the Family File. RE: [LegacyUG] Check/Repair
The Legacy backup collects all the various pieces of the database into a zip file container. RE: [LegacyUG] Check/Repair
I can't see the point of making Legacy backups. I keep all Legacy datafiles in a sub-folder of My Documents and they are backed up every week (onto an external hard drive) with all my other documents and data by a specialised backup/restore program, which is likely to be more reliable and flexible than anything built into Legacy (and much safer than anything in the cloud). I have used Legacy for about 8 years without problems and never heard of File Maintenance or run it to my knowledge. John Clifford -Original Message- From: Marnie Oakes [mailto:marnie.oa...@verizon.net] Sent: 19 January 2012 20:20 To: LegacyUserGroup@LegacyUsers.com Subject: [LegacyUG] Check/Repair Right now I have no Legacy problems. However, I have not run File Maintenance in weeks because the last time I did I ended up with a very mixed up files. Children of parents in the 1900s ended up in Medieval families; individuals from my husband's database were intermixed with mine, etc. I went back to my backups and have been ignoring the problem. I am concerned that I should be doing the maintenance or that a problem may occur that requires maintenance for the solution. Any hints on how to do run check/repair without problems? Making backups certainly saved my data. I checked the archives, but didn't find that anyone else had had my problems.
