[LegacyUG] Where to enter history of the area?
Click on the View tab, then Master Lists, then Location. A list of all your locations appears. Select the one you want, then click Edit. The Notes window appears, where you can enter a description or history of the location – I use the Lewis Topographical Dictionary of England, published by Archive CD Books for English locations by copy and paste into the notes. Click on save, which returns you to the list, and you will see an X in the right hand column, indicating that a note has been entered for the location. [LegacyUG] Mendeley; Zotero? Using with Legacy?
While thinking of how to store documents that might not have a place in Legacy, but will have a place when I, hopefully, put together a family history (such as the history/customs of the place where they lived) I remembered reading about these two programs that work with word processors. Zotero is a plugin that works with firefox and Word or Open Office. It's a way to cut and paste and save research in one place, from what I understand. Does anyone use a tool like this for genealogy, or is it overkill? All these extra files could be kept in the same directory/subdirectories where I keep the media I have loaded, or will load into legacy. I hope this isn't too off topic. For me, Legacy is a tool not just to store information in, but hopefully one that will help me when I want to put all the information into an interesting story/history. [LegacyUG] Where to enter history of the area?
Is there any place in Legacy to enter the history of the area where ancestors lived? I have some in a note field from some work I did seven years ago when I did a few months of research. But, not only does it fill the note field of a person, where the notes should be personal, the history applies to several families. I did try to find something in the help file. I can see that it might not be necessarily a part of family tree software, but I don't want to lose track of it. Can anyone suggest a general place to enter it other than keeping a paper file along with legacy? Thanks for putting up with this technically challenged member. [LegacyUG] Notes in Events field?
I am still trying to find the best way to enter my own notes in relation to events. I can put them in comments under the actual text of the detail. But will they get lost there when I am trying to print out a report that will be the easiest to put into narrative form. As the information grows more sparse it isn't a problem, but with more immediate family, there are a lot of things to enter. If I put them all in the "notes" field" they aren't connected with the event. I know this is probably a no brainer for those who are more familiar with the program, but is entering my stories and comments about the event into the source citation, the best way to do this? I wish there was a note field for the events. [LegacyUG] Undo Redo Needed
This is about the fifth time I have finished writing a lot of notes in the note field, made one mistake and used the undo (Ctr Z) and lost everything I'd written. There is no way to redo. I need to remember to write my notes in a text editor so that doesn't happen again, but would it be that difficult for Legacy to have a "redo" feature. So frustrating! All the Legacy defined events already have the [sources] field in the sentence definition so for those events you only have to set the source options in the report setup. Re: [LegacyUG] Trying to enter information that will result in readable reports
Look at any one of the standard Legacy defined sentences to see how to have the source citations included in your custom sentences. What you have to do is use the special codes from the little box at the bottom of the sentence definition screen to add the sources text field to your sentence. Wherever you include that field Legacy will insert the source citations for the event. Re: [LegacyUG] Trying to enter information that will result in readable reports
Thank you Paula, that was the case- I needed to insert the [Source] field at the end of my sentence override. I didn't understnd that was part of the default wording structure for the event. I have been doing mainly data imput into Legacy and am only just now seeing how the reports look. Upon reflective I should of been checking the output into reports as I had been going along. I think I have come up with a combination of default wording and then adding some condensed extra wording that doesn't clog up the report too much. Re: [LegacyUG] Trying to enter information that will result in readable reports
Paula, It should not be necessary to add the sources in the way you suggest (if indeed that is possible). The addition of sources is a combination of two factors 1) The Event has a Source linked to it, and b) in Report Options> Sources the box to display sources is checked. Michele, You are quite welcome. Mapping is an important function. It would be nice if it were easier... RE: [LegacyUG] maps?
Wow, John. That was great advice! Thanks for taking the time to type that all out :) Michele -Original Message- From: John B. Lisle [mailto:leg...@tqsi.com] Sent: Friday, February 24, 2012 3:40 PM To: LegacyUserGroup@LegacyUsers.com Subject: RE: [LegacyUG] maps? Michele, I geocode locations from all over the world every day with Legacy and know how frustrating it can be. Let me share with you a few things I have learned and how I do it. 1/ If you add US, USA, etc. it can confuse Bing. I think Legacy now strips that off before it sends the location to Bing to geocode. 2/ If you write out the State, it will get more confused than if you use the Postal code for the state; eg, better to geocode TX vs. Texas. 3/ If the state has a city/town by the same name as the county, it will almost always find the city, even if you wanted the county. Putting "Co." or "County" after a county name will help it understand what is a county. If I have the name of the town, I just enter it without the county. 4/ Bing will find a location differently depending on where the map is placed when it goes looking. EG, I have had it fail miserably to find a location when map was far away from location, but when location is in the view, it finds it precisely. 5/ Bing will USUALLY not find townships. 6/ Clean up the naming of the location after you have let Bing find the location. If you let Bing re-place the pin after you have cleaned up the location name, Bing may recode it elsewhere; usually this happens when the county name is same as a city/town name. My process is to enter a new location with the minimum of information and let Bing try to do its thing. Then I edit the location with the old Geocode database and let that try to get the name expanded properly. --> I have significantly edited the GeoCode-xxx.txt files to get the Geocode database to format the names to my naming standards. I compare the location coordinate found from old Geocode with Bing to see that they seem to agree. The old Geocode results are not as precise as Bing, but it will find places that Bing gets wrong. For coding at Country/State/Province/etc. level, I code to the capital. I use Wikipedia extensively to figure out county seats and townships. I code county level locations at the county seat and townships at the major town. I code cemeteries at the cemetery when I can find the location. (FindaGrave is very helpful with that.) RE: [LegacyUG] maps?
(FindaGrave is very helpful with that.) I like to enter historical locations which are often NOT in any GeoCode database so I need to find where the location is now and manually place the pin where it needs to be. These systems are smart, but not smart enough. ;-) I go to this trouble because mapping is important to me, and I export the geocodes to my web publishing tool which does extensive mapping of the events for each person. ok? john. Thanks for confirming it, Jenny. I didn't want people to think I was completely daft :) michele There's something odd going on. I opened Bing Maps outside of Legacy and tried to plot Marshall, Alabama, USA. Bing produced several locations around Birmingham, Alabama but did not find Marshall. When I tried Google Maps it put the pointer near Guntersville, AL and I noticed a locattion nearby called Marshall County Park. So then I went back to Bing Maps and told it to locate Marshall County, Alabama, USA. This time it got it right. Then I entered Marshall County, Alabama, USA as a location in Legacy and sure enough the pointer was located where Michele said, in New York State. Re: Re: [LegacyUG] Print maternal lineage
Paula, What you have asked for sounds like what I have requested before. I need a report that shows a line between me and the oldest ancestor in a particular line. When I do a report for my family, I wish to show each direct line from me (or them, as the case may be) back as far as I can go. The Master Genealogy had that, called a Direct Line Ahnentafel. I used it often and it has been the only thing I have missed with Legacy. Jane Sarles On , Paula Ryburn wrote: > Not that I know of. Re: [LegacyUG] Trying to enter information that will result in readable reports
Lea-Anne, Just wanted to also mention that the sentence structure for ANY "event" can be modified to suit your needs. Legacy has included a "Census" event that has a set sentence structure "Soandso appeared on the suchandsuch census in date in place." (or something close to that) You can modify that in the Events list, once for all of your Census events. Or you can override the sentence structure for one event (or maybe a set of events if you override it once and copy the event using the clipboard, for example). Or I think you can even copy the "Census" event to your own version "Lea-Annes Census"...! Another thing to keep in mind is that all of the events are "generic" in the database. They all have the same fields description, date, place, notes. A Residence event looks remarkably similar to a Census event ;) but for the sentence structure. So, from a purely using-the-database viewpoint, you can do anything you want. Legacy just took the time to set up some "standard" sentence structures to assist us. (Well, that sounded a bit "know it all" but thought I am not a Legacy programmer, I do believe that's how it is set up.) Though I'm not an expert on all Legacy reporting options either, I believe every report has one or more options on the format in which to print the events. I've lately been using the FGR, and the option is "list" vs. "sentence"... be sure to check these out, too, as you test your output. One format might be more to your liking. Good luck! --Paula in Texas Researching: Adair Baker Beasley Benson Betz Bigley Blagrave Burton Chapman Clement Clough Coppernoll Costine Daulton Dinwiddie Doody Ellis Exline Field Floran Floyd Gates Goodale Gordon Gump Hale Harbaugh Hind Hopkins Hughes Hurdle Jones Klein Koyle Laswell McDonald Misner Passwaters Pelton Roberts Roche Ryburn Sanford Short Singer Sullivan Weller Williams From: Lea-Anne Davison To: LegacyUserGroup@LegacyUsers.com Sent: Wed, February 22, 2012 9:40:42 PM Subject: Re: [LegacyUG] Trying to enter information that will result in readable reports I think I will experient with what has been suggested. I realise there is no right or wrong way, but how it looks in the report is an important part for me. I think I will try putting in an event whether I call in Event or Residence not sure yet with an condensed description of the family in the census eg John Smith was living with his wife and children (perhaps name each but keep it short). Then source the census with the full details in the text field and see how that looks for the reports. Whether I print it as part of the citation I will decide after I see how it looks but at least this way it will only be once at the end of the report and not repeated all through the report. Re: [LegacyUG] Version 7.5.0.149 - font issues
It is hard to say for sure but I strongly suspect that your font problem arises from the difficulty with the font setting screen. It is probably that Legacy is not correctly reading the settings for fonts from the report .usr file. The font setting problem is now fixed in the 7.5.0.154 release that was issued last night. If you update and set your fonts in the report the problem should go away. If it does not please use the report a Bug link on the Legacy Home tab to report the issue. There is an option on the reports to not repeat duplicate lines. Using that should eliminate duplication of your and your sister's descendants. You will still be shown in the second family, only to show where your line fits, then there will be a note indicating this is a duplicate line with a reference back to the first listing. But if you're geo-coding through Bing, then Big should locate the place correctly. We're aware that corrdinates in Geo Location Database are not always correct and unfortunately, there's nothing we can do about it since it came from another company. I have worked with users who have reported problems with Bing not locating places correctly. There is one area in the world which is not coding correctly (it's been reported to the programmers and not a commonly used area) and for other areas it's really strange but I can usually get the location pinpointed correctly when I enter it exactly as the user who is having trouble enters it. Sometimes you need to "finesse" the location just a bit and then it works ok - not sure why that is, but once you get it where it belongs, click on the Geo-Code button and select "Do not auto-geocode the current location" Sincerely, Sherry Technical Support Legacy Family Tree On Fri, Feb 24, 2012 at 7:32 AM, Gene Young wrote: > On 2/24/2012 9:02 AM, Michele Lewis wrote: > > , Marshall, Alabama, USA > > The problem lies in the database that Legacy uses for Geo-locating. > Some of the locations have incorrect latitude and longitudes entered and > therefore locate the wrong place.
