[LegacyUG] Do you attach a census image for every single source?

No problems. Feel free.

I've moved the [Notes] in all my event sentences from after the
[Sources] into the main sentence structure, usually at the end, so the
sentence usually ends [Desc] [Notes].[Sources] This means that I can
put whatever I want in there and it prints on reports.

The only thing to watch is the space immediately in front of the
"[Notes]" means you get a nice flow-on into the notes section, but you
can't end a sentence in the [Desc], unless you put the "." into the
[Desc], which I don't like. Once you are in the notes, you can have as
many sentences as you like.

Cheers

Tony

Re: [LegacyUG] Do you attach a census image for every single source?

2012-04-18 Thread Paula Ryburn
Julia,
This is another of those personal preference topics, despite the webinar Geoff
gave on entering a census. You might want to check the archives for more
background.

But I think the answer is the former -- attach image to every census source
used.

I attach my images to the master source, but then I am a bit of a "lumper" and
have my census sources set up by county in the US. This way all the images I
have for a county are available in one place. So far it works for me.

Also, I believe that you are really only storing one image, just linking it
multiple times.

I don't generally enter census data (or even look for it??) for non-direct line
families. At least that's where I am in my research right now. I will enter
events and fully source them for everyone in the family that contains my direct
line ancestor, though. It's very easy to do using the event and source
clipboards.

If I started "branching out" and doing more extended family research, I would
hand that census information in the same way.

I would like to know how other people handle the attaching of census images for
their sources.

Do you attach a census image for every census source used? Or do you only attach
the image just for direct lines and transcribe it in the source detail for
extended families?

Thanks!

Correct. What I do is I put the information in the source. For example, let’s
say I adding cemetery info for a person. I will also have to add the source
for that info. This is what my source looks like:

Simmons Family Cemetery (Forrest County, MS; On AB Simmons Road, off of Rock
Hill to Brooklyn Road), George W. Simmons marker, personally read, 1999.

Here is one that is way out in the sticks and I opted to put the GPS
coordinates.

Marshall Baptist Church (McDuffie Co, GA; N33°29.688' W082°25.180'), Elizabeth
Stanford Lewis marker, personally read, 2009.

Here is another one:

Lewis Memorial United Methodist Church Cemetery (Columbia County, GA; NW corner
of Columbia Road and Lewiston Road), Robert Horace Young marker, personally
read, 25 Sep 2008.

When I get a census hit, I create a source clipboard entry and attach
the image(s) there. Then I create a census event for each person in the
household (except for servants, visitors, boarders etc.) and attach the
source to that event.

I don't transcribe the whole household into each event. The census
event sentence reads [onDate] [HeShe] appeared on the census [~inPlace]
as a [Desc] [Notes].[Sources]

I use the description for age, occupation and widowhood. The notes get
used for additional information. So:

"On 2 Apr 1911 she appeared on the census at 67 High Street, Aldershot,
Hants as a 73-year-old widowed dressmaker who was living with her
daughter Mary and family."

So, I do attach the image to every source and don't transcribe the
detail for any event.

I don't transcribe at all.
(I can hear people gasping right now--!)
I mean, I have the images a click or two away, and transcription is just another
step for error.
I do, however, sometimes include information in the census event notes, like
"She was 8 years old and attended school during the year." to help with the
narrative reports later. (Hence, I don't need to figure out how to turn off the
event notes that are full of transcriptions.)

What I do is attach the census image to everyone in the family.
I record the data in an appropriate entry, address, birth, marriage, place.
Then I create events for other data mentioned like immigration,
naturalization,occupation.
I'm wrestling with the idea of transcribing all the data for each person
mentioned, but with 900+ people,I'm a little reluctant.
Take care

Easy Peasy!

While in the family view, right click on the label to the left that says
BORN (or DIED, any of them). A box will come up that says Customize
Display. Here is where you tell Legacy what you want to see on the family
view. Here is what I have displayed in the family view

BIRTH DATE/PLACE
DEATH DATE/PLACE
BURIAL DATE/PLACE
EVENT: CEMETERY
AGE AT DEATH

Have fun!

AGE at death is an option available for displaying in a column in INDEX
view.

Is it possible to display this piece of information when displaying the
FAMILY page? If so, how? I've not been able to see how.

Thanks

While in the family view, right click on the label to the left that says
BORN (or DIED, any of them). A box will come up that says Customize

Is it possible to display this piece of information when displaying the

I follow Mike's approach. I never (NEVER EVER) merge someones

I enter information I find in the downloaded file and see how sure I
am of it's accuracy and then I will start entering in my tree. However

Re: [LegacyUG] Diamond-trees in the rough and what to do with them in your core Legacy file

2012-04-18 Thread brittongen

Bill,
Another option is to import the dubious file into a new, empty Legacy file,
master sourcing all data to the compiler's information and forcing RINs to a
number range well outside anything in your existing file and where it might
grow to, e.g. commencing at 5,000 or above. Then make a copy of your family
file and rename it to indicate a work file status. Merge the dubious file into
the work file. You then have a file where you can readily evaluate and research
potential relationships, but where UID identification and RINs for your family
file are preserved, permitting Intellishare to be used if and when you have
enough to do a partial or full merge back to your family file. There's little
chance of confusion with this approach, and Legacy has numerous ways to help
you keep clear what you have, have done, and plan to do.

Re: [LegacyUG] Diamond-trees in the rough and what to do with them in your core Legacy file

2012-04-18 Thread Ron Ferguson
Bill,

We are all saying pretty much the same thing, I would add that you should
contact the Tree Owner, for two reasons: 1) If using someone else's data it
is bad form not to tell them - especially if you may publish at some time.
2) You will often (by no means always) find that they are willing to help.

But, do check out all the information for yourself. Errors are very common,
some people are less inclined than others to accept them, but we all make
them. I have had some pointed out on my trees, and the main thing is to
examine the alternative evidence without prejudice, and be ready to change.

Bill,

I pretty much follow the same advice as given previously by Michelle.
Personally I would import the GEDCOM into a *separate* family file created
specifically for that particular GEDCOM or Family Line, but definitely *NOT*
into my main Family File. This just makes it easier to work with and compare
to your Family File, IMHO. In addition to contacting the author for
additional source information, as Michelle suggested, I would only use the
information in that GEDCOM or new family file as *LEADS* for further
research and proper sourcing.

Geoff R.s statement is worth repeating, "Genealogy without documentation is
Mythology."

As a side note, some members of the Legacy User Group will not respond to a
message sent in HTML, so please make sure that all your messages are

Hope this helps,

Subject: [LegacyUG] Diamond-trees in the rough and what to do with them in
your core Legacy file

I am new to this forum so this might be an out of line question -- not sure.

I am very strong technically, so I don't need all the details, more of a
vision would be helpful. I am good at technical details. Right now I need
help to see the forest.

I have a small Legacy family file of about 100+ people.

I have found a useful tree (via Legacy research tips :-) ) with another
100+ family members. I downloaded a GEDCOM and created a temp-Legacy file
to review the content. There are no sources in the GEDCOM but it looks like
some good leads. I found it on Rootweb (last updated about 2004). The
authors email address may or may not be good as it is from 2004. I suspect
the person is part of this tree and the tree is based on family legends and
personal conversations.

About 20 % of the new family members are in my current file with high degree
of confidence.

Before I "shoot myself in the foot" I would like to ask this community for
an approach to using a tree of unknown quality when you find one. This is
the first time I have ever found tree I value. It links, without any doubt,
to my tree to some extent or to a large extent. The 20% is a perfect fit.
It is the 80% I don't know how to approach.

What are the risks? What mistakes should I avoid that you all know about
from lessons learned? If I can avoid doing something really stupid, I would
like to avoid doing it.

How would you approach this beast?
(1) MERGE with my Legacy file and sort out details later?
(2) MANUALLY add these 100 entries one at a time and research each?
(3) LIMITED-MERGE keep only blood lines and cast off the rest?
(4) Should I try to contact the author? What would I request? I am new to
genealogy so I don't know the etiquette that is common between researchers.
(5) ... I could go on with questions but I bet you guys have faced this
hundreds of times ... this is my first time.

Maybe there is some guidance in a book or in a class or in a CD from Legacy?
I don't know what I don't know. Or maybe Geoff R. can create a new Webinar
on "Diamond-trees in the rough and what to do with them in your core Legacy
file?" ... if he has not done that one yet.

My goal is to document and share my own family tree as professionally as I
can. I know I have a lot to learn. Your suggestions for guidance would be
greatly appreciated. I have reviewed training Volume 1 and am working
through training volume 2. I have found these to be very good resources for
learning the tool features and functions. I have been monitoring Legacy
webinars.

If this belongs on different board, please let me know where.

Thanks, in advance, for your consideration.
Bill

part of this tree and the tree is based on family legends and personal
conversations.

About 20 % of the new family members are in my current file with high degree of
confidence.

Before I "shoot myself in the foot" I would like to ask this community for an
approach to using a tree of unknown quality when you find one. This is the
first time I have ever found tree I value. It links, without any doubt, to my
tree to some extent or to a large extent. The 20% is a perfect fit. It is
the 80% I don't know how to approach.

What are the risks? What mistakes should I avoid that you all know about from
lessons learned? If I can avoid doing something really stupid, I would like to
avoid doing it.

don't know what I don't know. Or maybe Geoff R. can create a new Webinar on
"Diamond-trees in the rough and what to do with them in your core Legacy file?"
... if he has not done that one yet.

My goal is to document and share my own family tree as professionally as I can.
I know I have a lot to learn. Your suggestions for guidance would be greatly
appreciated. I have reviewed training Volume 1 and am working through training
volume 2. I have found these to be very good resources for learning the tool
features and functions. I have been monitoring Legacy webinars.

If this belongs on different board, please let me know where.

Thanks, in advance, for your consideration.
Bill

Personally, I'd start maintaining two files - your, original file and the file
containing the newly acquired people. In the latter, I'd prune out the 20% that
matched the original, leaving no overlap. I'd then begin research on what was
left.

Over time, I'd hope to establish the links to the original file and as things
firmed-up, I'd add people to the original file, removing from the latter file as
I went. Over time, the latter file would fade into history and could be
scrapped.

Michele,

I totally agree with your approach to inclusion of foreign GEDCOMs. Assuming
that one can contact the Tree owner, one techniques which I have found
useful is to offer copies of my document(s) before asking if they have
documentary support for something about which I am uncertain.

I NEVER merge GEDCOM files into my Legacy database NEVER and I certainly
wouldn’t if the info was unsourced. If I thought the information was
reliable, I would add each person one at a time AS I RESEARCHED THE PERSON
MYSELF to be able to add the appropriate sources.

Yes, I would try and contact the compiler of this information and ask them
specific questions about their sources. If they do have sources then I
would access those sources myself. I don’t trust anything I don’t see with
my own two eyes. If the person has documents, I would offer to pay for
copying and mailing costs or ask him/her to scan them and email them along
with full citations of where they found the documents.

It may seem like a lot of work but it will save you work in the long run.
If you just add everything you will spend years trying to sort it all out
later. Also, your database will not be credible to any other researcher who
DOES document their sources.

Legacy is the best program out there for handling your genealogy database.
I know you will learn all kinds of useful tricks on this mailing list to get

I am new to this forum so this might be an out of line question -- not sure.

I am very strong technically, so I don't need all the details, more of a vision
would be helpful. I am good at technical details. Right now I need help to
see the forest.

I have a small Legacy family file of about 100+ people.

I have found a useful tree (via Legacy research tips :-) ) with another 100+
family members. I downloaded a GEDCOM and created a temp-Legacy file to review
the content. There are no sources in the GEDCOM but it looks like some good
leads. I found it on Rootweb (last updated about 2004). The authors email
address may or may not be good as it is from 2004. I suspect the person is

Thanks so much for this hint, I had never heard of the picture gallery
clipboard.

Thanks also to Brian for his advice.

Christine,
It would be worth your while investigating the use of
picture gallery clipboard. The picture gallery is really a link
gallery , Legacy is just storing a link to the image file not the
image itself. If you have taken the trouble to set up an image for a
source citation , maybe added a description , date and notes , you
don't want to keep repeating that same manual process.
The picture gallery clipboard will help you. In your source citation
picture gallery , right click on the icon you wish to copy and you get
a dropdown list of options. Copy will copy that one item, Copy all
will copy that entire picture gallery ( if you have multiple pictures
) , Copy Append is useful if you want to copy pictures from several
different galleries. When you have finished the copy just go to the
target gallery, for example the individual or a particular event
picture gallery and then right click in a blank picture space. Once
again you get the dropdown list but this time with a paste option ,
telling you how many images you have on the clipboard. When you paste
the item or items , all the description, date and notes are added as
well as the image (or rather the image link). It also applies to any
files you have in the picture gallery, not just image files but also
sound files text file, anthing you can put in the gallery in fact.
