Not sure what you mean by any request for the picture. Do you mean
you can't see where you added a picture to an Event/Source for that
person or you can't see where the picture is missing?

The list of missing files will tell you exactly where the missing
picture should be, eg Picture: Individual Event: Source Detail: ,
so if you go that Event or Source and look in the Picture Gallery or on
the Multimedia tab you should see a big blue question mark where the
missing image should be.

It's possible that there is an Event picture missing but you are going
direct to the Individual's Picture Gallery from the icon on their
Information screen and you don't have All Pictures selected.

To be more specific... this is how I copy a citation...

Add the Alt. Name event, as Michele suggests. (You might consider adding an
Alt. Spelling event if that's closer to what these are.)
Click on the person's source (little books) icon.
Highlight the citation line for the AKA and click on the two-pages copy
source to clipboard icon in the lower left to copy it to the clipboard.
(NOTE: If you want what's already on the clipboard, go in and Save it,
because this bit will overwrite that.)
Then highlight the citation line for the Alt. Name event and click on the
blue minus sign add clipboard source to the current event icon.
  Close that window.
  Then delete the AKA/alternate name.

  Hope this helps wasn't over-kill.

You will need to do this one at a time. Before you delete the AKA, make the
alt. name event and then copy the citation, paste it to the event, then go back
and delete the AKA.

Re: [LegacyUG] Date Order

2012-10-04 Thread Sherry/Support
The Index view is another way of looking at the Name List. Like the
Name LIst, it can only be sorted by #, Given and Surname. You can save
the Index Report (click on the Print button in the Name List) as csv
but Excel doesn't know what to do with dates prior to 1901 so you
won't get a good sort by dates.

GenViewer, an add-on program which we sell, does sort by column. You
might want to take a look at that. It's an *awesome* viewer which will
read the FDB file (as well as several other genealogy file types) and
allows you to do some great searches, sorts and has some basic report
printing features. My favorite feature is the self-viewing gedcom,
which allows you to create a file that has a run-time of GenViewer so
you can view the file on any computer without installing any programs.

[LegacyUG] GEDCOMs - exporting - problem with deleting a source.

2012-10-04 Thread Pat Hickin
I have created a .gedcom of the ancestors of a 2x grgrandmother. I am
trying to eliminate a faulty source that I don't need. Legacy won't delete
it as it is being 'used.' When I click on show List,' I am told it is
attached to Marriage Record 902.

So I do a search on MRIN = 902. I am told it does not exist.

So I go to the original file (the file I created the GEDCOM from) and
search for MRIN = 902. That marriage record is for someone in an entirely
different branch of the family, someone who is NOT included in the GEDCOM
at all.

So how do I get rid of the faulty source??

Thanks!

Is there a way to tag all siblings and ancestors of an individual

I want to do this in one fell swoop, not individual by individual.

It puts the name of the file in the Filename box/slot, and I click on

It immediately takes me to another window. Only the tail-end of the

showing in the lower right above the Open button is Legacy(*.fdb).
No filenames are displayed in the window and instead it says No items

I'm not sure that anyone did. I think it more likely that lumping was

LUGgers tend to fall into one of two groups which we refer to as Lumpers

example having a different Master Source for every Birth Certificate
they cite, whereas Lumpers will have one Master Source for all Birth
Certificates, or perhaps one for each Country or State.

Is there a way to do it so individual changes can be made? i.e. My
relative was in the War of 1812 and there are 4 different payroll and
muster roll dates along with spelling his name 4 differeng ways. Is
there a way to put everything under a military event and have the
different dates and different name spellings be spelled out? OR Do
I need to enter 4 different Military Events for each of the four
  dates and names?

I don't think you can enter 4 separate dates into a Date field, but you
could certainly create one Event and put all the information into the
Notes, or most into Notes and something in the Description field. Then
attach the 4 different Sources to the one Event.

[LegacyUG] Another problem -- sorry! -- with source list names in a new .gedcom

In OptionsCustomizeSources, I have checked Include the Source List Name

When I exported to the .gedcom, I checked Override Source options --
Include all source information.

I don't understand what is going on and I don't know what to do about it!!

Re: [LegacyUG] does gedcom drop source details???

2012-10-04 Thread Ron Ferguson
Pat,

By generic, do you mean a generic GEDCOM as selected from the drop-down list,
if so then it should include Sources. Ah!!! I just realised that you are
probably using Source Writer when I expect the Source Details to be dropped by
pretty well all of them except for Legacy GEDCOMs, and I’m not even sure about
that one! Even if the GEDCOM contains the Source Details the chances of them
being imported into another program are just about zero.

The GEDCOM standards are old, out-dated, and past it! This is nothing to do
with Legacy just inertia by the GEDCOM standards committee (or what have you).

Here is one more thing to check.

When you bring up the “GEDCOM Export” window to create your file try
clicking on the “Customize”. In the resulting “Items to Include…”
window,
look in the right side list of items and scroll down to see if SOUR (Source)
item is included. If you don’t see it there, find it on the left side,
highlight it, click on “Include” to move it over to the right side list.

Once satisfied that your list of items to include in your GEDCOM is
complete, then click OK, which will take you back to the main “GEDCOM
Export” window. Then just click the large “Start…”

I know that a lot of people that create GEDCOM files from within Legacy
never bother going this far in the menu options but you’d be surprised at
the things that one can include. If that works for you then you can try
going back into that “Items to include…” window, customizing your list,
and
save it off as a .GEL file which you can always reload for future exports.
As Ron said, the GEDCOM standards are old and outdated but they are the
closest thing to a common denominator when every other genealogical program
on the market wants to create their own proprietary file structure.

Re: [LegacyUG] How to add notes in the repository

2012-10-04 Thread Brian/Support
I would not try to add the fact that you have a copy of a particular
source to the repository notes. I would add it to either the master
source comments (if the source was a book) or to the details if it is a
certificate or an extract of some records from a larger source.

The repository is like a library which holds many different items
(sources). Notes for the repository were set up to record miscellaneous
things; like operating hours for a bricks and mortar repository, for
which there is no field in the address details. Saying you have a copy
of a source in a repository is like saying you have a copy of Joe Blows
book about your ancestral family from the library of congress.

2012-10-04 Thread Pat Hickin
Brian,Thanks for your reply. I tried that but still no source details!

Ron, to respond to some of your points:

You wrote:

1) By generic, do you mean a generic GEDCOM as selected from the drop-down

Ans.: YES!

2) Ah!!! I just realised that you are probably using Source Writer
Ans.: Now I usually use source writer but MANY of my entries are in the
basic,original syste.-- I don't know what it's called. Doesn't matter-- I
don't have ANY source details.

3) Even if the GEDCOM contains the Source Details the chances of them
being imported into another program are just about zero.
Ans.: I am exporting from Legacy into Legacy. (I chose the generic style
because I want to upload eventually into WikiTree.

I don't EVER remember anybody discussing this before -- if the source
details are dropped then one has to become an extreme splitter or else the
sourcing info will be extremely vague. I have zillions of entries under
Findagrave, for example, with only the Detail info to distinguish one entry
from another.

Also, it seems to me we should be warned if Legacy introduces something new
that means it will no longer travel via .gedcom, but that may be asking
too much. The more I work with Legacy, the more I realize how complicated
it all is!!

even sure about that one! Even if the GEDCOM contains the Source Details
the chances of them being imported into another program are just about zero.

The GEDCOM standards are old, out-dated, and past it! This is nothing to
do with Legacy just inertia by the GEDCOM standards committee (or what have
 you).

I am checking a newly-created (by me) generic gedcom and it seems to have
 dropped ALL my source details!!

Should that have happened? Is there a way to avoid it?

If that's the norm, then one should certainly be a splitter!!

Legacy can't read your mind and doesn't know how you rename a file.
The lilnks to the files are stored in the database using the file name
and path as it is at the time you link it.

Legacy can, however, find pictures that have been *moved*.

If you change the file name through Picture Center, then the name is
changed in the database, but not if you change it outside of Legacy.

Sadly, you'll have to manually relink each file that has had a name change.

Sherry

Re: [LegacyUG] Help with printer margins / footers in Legacy, please

2012-10-04 Thread Paula Ryburn
Thanks, I didn't remember to look for or at that.
However, I see that I had it set to .75 inches, which is plentybut the top
margin was set at .287 (or something really small weird) and when I changed
THAT one to .75, the footer prints out just fine.
Go figure.
Maybe it had something to do with that pesky centimeters thing... I didn't
know when or how my preferences were set to centimeters, and this might be the
first time I've printed a FGR since I changed it to inches.

Under the Family Group Records sheet, click on the Reports Option...
in the bottom-centre and you can set the margins to suit your requirements.

Alternatively, how can I tell the footers to print farther away from
 the bottom of the page?

My new printer apparently likes to have a few points more of
unprintable space at the bottom of the page, so I get only the top
half of the footer... Produced by Legacy on Oct 2, 2012 on my

Not that I wouldn't do that ;) , but I think when the system changed the UOM to

Re: [LegacyUG] Ancestor tagging

Two or three swoops would be OK ;) love it!

I don't know how exactly to do this, but I suspect you would want to use Focus
Groups. I think you can select a set of ancestors or descendants and add them
to the Focus Group, then select another and add it, etc. But I'm not an expert
on Focus Groups.

RE: [LegacyUG] does gedcom drop source details???

2012-10-04 Thread Brian L. Lightfoot
Without wading all the way back through this thread, I have to now ask this
question…what makes you think there are no source details in your exported
gedcom? In other words, exactly what or how are you trying to view this data?
You had one message that said “in checking your gedcom…” so just what does
“checking” mean, that is, how are you viewing the data?

The details may be there but something or somehow they are not being displayed
depending upon your method of displaying it. Have you tried sending a sample
.GED to someone else to have them confirm that your source details are indeed
off to never-never land?

Brian,Thanks for your reply. I tried that but still no source details!

Ron, to respond to some of your points:

You wrote:

1) By generic, do you mean a generic GEDCOM as selected from the drop-down
list.

Ans.: YES!

2) Ah!!! I just realised that you are probably using Source Writer

Ans.: Now I usually use source writer but MANY of my entries are in the
basic,original syste.-- I don't know what it's called. Doesn't matter-- I
don't have ANY source details.

3) Even if the GEDCOM contains the Source Details the chances of them being
imported into another program are just about zero.

Ans.: I am exporting from Legacy into Legacy. (I chose the generic style
because I want to upload eventually into WikiTree.

I don't EVER remember anybody discussing this before -- if the source details
are dropped then one has to become an extreme splitter or else the sourcing
info will be extremely vague. I have zillions of entries under Findagrave, for
example, with only the Detail info to distinguish one entry from another.

Also, it seems to me we should be warned if Legacy introduces something new
that means it will no longer travel via .gedcom, but that may be asking too
much. The more I work with Legacy, the more I realize how complicated it all
is!!
