Thanks Brian.  Hopefully the problem will be fixed soon.  Yes turning off
events made the marriage and divorce appear.

[LegacyUG] Legacy re install

When I originally bought the deluxe version of legacy I was sent a program to

I still have this program on my computer, so when I put legacy back on my
computer is this application (.exe) all I need?

I have the application saved to my external have drive as well.

Thanks Rich

[LegacyUG] Very big trouble

2014-03-19 Thread Jane Sarles
I think I may be in very big trouble. I suspect that my copy of Legacy
was never installed properly. I have been, since it came out, working
with it, since it appears when I clicked on the Legacy icon on my
desktop. Today however, I decided to do a one-name study of one of my
lines in a particularl area. So I created a gedcom and imported all
those folks of that surname into a new file, titled Rippy Study.

Then, when I try to go back to my Main Data File (to which I have been
making changes since Legacy 8 came out) it is not to be found. The only
thing I find is a sample file. There are folder that say Legacy Back
Ups and Legacy Family Tree in my documents folder, but they are empty.

I seem to have lost my whole main file, at least I cannot locate it.
There is a folder that contain old backups of a couple of years ago.

I have tried to phone support, but they do not answer the phone. You
all, by now, know what a bumbler I am and I should probably never have
tried to upgrade to v. 8. V. 7 always worked OK. I think I need to
move to a simpler, easier program, really.

Have you tried clicking on the big blue circle (has an L in it) in the
top left corner? (I think this may vary depending on your color
options, bit it should still be in the upper left corner).

Click that button and a pop-up will come up with 2 columns. The right
column will contain your most recently opened files. You can click on
the proper one to load it - but it also shows the full path where the
file is located so you can make a note of the location.

The only simpler, easier program that I know of is a pencil and paper. You
have just saved you file to a location that Legacy doesn't know.

If you are using WIN 7 click on your start button and in the search programs
and files box type in *.fdb. This should show you all your Legacy data files.

[LegacyUG] Last question

2014-03-19 Thread Jane Sarles
It seems disaster may have been averted. Thanks for the help to those
who kindly did.

I want to take a word to thank Legacy for the wonderful Webinars they
provide. It is truly a fine service to make those available to watch.
They wouldn't have to do that for free, but they do.

OK, I have one more question on how to use Legacy. It is basically the
same question and has the same problem I always face - perhaps just my
shorthcomings. What I often need to know is: Certain people in a
certain place. Example:

All those with the surname Rippy in Washington County Indiana
All those who married someone with the surname Rippy in Washington
County Indiana

Of perhaps all those with the surname Wells who anything happen to them
in North Carolina.

I just need those in a separate chunk (I don't know if focus group or
tagged group. My preference is a whole new file so I can work with it
as I research)

I can get the list of all those with the surname and their spouses. What
I cannot then do is narrow it to a particular county. There is no
search factor of any place in their data equals Washington County I
should have to go through birth place equals, or marriage place equals,
or death place equals, and so on.

Then I go to the Master Location List. I do not see how I can get
only the Rippys people there. I have tagged Rippys and their spouses,
but cannot transfer that condition to the location list, and if I do,
cannot see how to print a listing of it.

Can't see why we can't have a parameter of any location equals ??? in
the as a primary condition in the search.

I use Legacy as a research tool as opposed to a publishing tool. I
repeatedly face this problem in preparing my research plans. I sure
would like to overcome it once and for all. Help appreciated.

[LegacyUG] Legacy 8 Backup

2014-03-19 Thread Kirstin
I have just purchased Version 8. When I click backup, change the name of
the backup file to Version8 and click to add the date, it reverts back
to the old name which was Version7. I can't find a way to fix it. I
looked at the help file and that didn't help.

RE: [LegacyUG] Legacy 8 Backup

2014-03-19 Thread Bob Austen
Hi Kirstin,

I will assume that, after installing v8, you 'opened' your old file which
converted it to v8, and you have been working with it - and now want to do a
backup.

Was your previous file in v7 called Version7 ?? If so, when the file was
converted for use in v8 it will still be called Version7 unless you have
renamed it after conversion.

Check the name of the file you are now opening in v8 - it will show at the very
top of the Legacy screen.

When you do a backup it will use the name of your file and append the date and
time. I think you can change the name, but I don't see a reason to do that. I
want to identify my backup as just that - a backup of a particular file.

Re: [LegacyUG] Ipad and Families

2014-03-19 Thread Don Jaggi
The one reason I don't like it is that if you have the christening date
as a birth date it does not substitute the christening as an
alternative, so if all you have is a christening for a person the
display won't show you a date until you click on that person.

Re: [LegacyUG] Last question

2014-03-19 Thread Ron Taylor
I often search for similar things in my databases.  And, by the way, I don't
think any other genealogy product currently available can do these type of
searches.  This example pre-supposes that your locations are City, County,
State, Nation.  Step 5 will remove USA so those locations will only have City,
County, State.  Assume tag9 is clear.

1) ViewMaster ListsLocation and uncheck Show People and Show Map
2) Click OptionsExpand/Contract Location Parts
3) Select All Locations in List and Expand Long Location Names and Contract
Short Location Names
4) Check the 9 boxes under Parts to Work On
5) Check Remove , USA and , United States
6) Click Continue to make changes to the master locations list.
7) Click Sort then click Country, State, County, City button.  Then with
country still highlighted, use the Move down arrow to move it below the city
in the sort parameters.  Then click OK to sort the locations into State,
County, City order.
8) Type Indiana, Washington in Find and notice all the locations that are in
Washington County, Indiana.
9) Click on one of the desired locations to highlight it.  Hold the shift key
and use the down arrow to expand the highlight to all the Washington County,
Indiana locations.
10) With all locations highlighted that you want, click OptionsShow List
then tag everyone who use these locations on tag9.
11) Now SearchFindDetailed Search Individual Tag9 Equal to Tagged AND
Individual Surname Equal to Rippy.
12) Pay attention to the 3 radio buttons at the bottom left of the Search
window.

Note that you could randomly select and highlight locations in step 9 instead
of a range selection by holding Control as you click.  One more possibility
would be to use the Global Text Search available in Ltools which can find a
text string in any of the Legacy tables including the location fields.
