[LegacyUG] Phantom marriages
I'm having challenges adding parents to people. APPARENTLY it matters whether I use Add/add mother, Add/add spouse, or simply click in correct empty box. I find the death record for X; it gives his parents. If I click on the father's box, sometimes the data-entry screen appears but sometimes the ADD/Link dialogue appears. Whichever way I do it, when I try to add the mother, it creates a 2nd marriage for the father. Often it also disassociates X from the father. I've ended up with as many as 11 children, 5 attached to the father one per marriage, 5 attached to the mother one per marriage, and 1 attached to the couple. Yes, I can /fix/ it (either by merging or by unlinking/relinking) but it ought to not-necessary to fix it. I'm running .385 deluxe on a win 7-32bit. This challenge also occurs om 7.5 basic. I find it cleaner to (1) Make a note of the child's RIN (2) Set up the parents, as a couple (3) Attach the child. Re: [LegacyUG] importing from Ancestry
Last year I received a large FTM-generated GEDCOM with multimedia links, and a DVD with all the photos and documents. The GEDCOM says “Family Tree Maker (21.0.0.723)”. When I imported the GEDCOM into Legacy 7.5, I was able to successfully link the media files. There was one problem, however. The FTM export encodes the preferred picture for an individual in a different way than Legacy does. The Legacy import did not handle this (presumably non-standard) encoding well, causing each individual to have an extra (unlinked) mystery picture as the preferred picture. Thus, nothing was displayed in Family View, but the media gallery for the individual showed all of the linked pictures/documents. I had to delete the mystery picture and manually select the preferred picture. I reported the issue to Millennia. Recently, I had the opportunity to try the same GEDCOM with Legacy 8. Unfortunately, this time none of the pictures were linked at all. In fact, the references to the media all had missing filenames! I have only recently reported this. There is no workaround/repair possible, other than manually linking every file. With Legacy 7.5, I had a few other import issues not related to media, but caused by non-standard GEDCOM and/or non-standard FTM practices. These are essentially fixed in Legacy 8, with some minor cosmetic glitches still remaining. And when I say ‘fixed’, I mean that Legacy programmers have kindly implemented special handling to work around bad FTM export coding. I appreciate this effort. One big headache that is out of Legacy’s control is that every FTM-generated GEDCOM that I have received contains bad practices: non-dates in date fields, non-locations in location fields, multiple variants of the same location, middle initials missing the period, events that don’t read properly, etc. Ward From: William Boswell Sent: Sunday, April 06, 2014 9:56 AM To: legacyusergroup@LegacyUsers.com Subject: RE: [LegacyUG] importing from Ancestry The owner of the online tree only has the options of downloading to FTM or a GEDCOM file. The GEDCOM you can download directly from within your tree. If you want all the images, you'll have to purchase a copy of FTM for that. Once the images are saved locally to your hard drive you should be able to export to a GEDCOM and save the image paths. I know this works from Legacy to FTM because I do it all the time, but from FTM to Legacy I'm not sure. I'll have to try it sometime. I only use FTM to find records at Ancestry because Legacy is a better program. Re: [LegacyUG] Phantom marriages
I just did quite a bit of adding individuals and their parents and had no trouble like this. I has another marriage duplicates issue and the new people were fine. I create the person x and then click on thr parent box, get the pop up, choose add father/mother, enter that data, then cick on thr spouse to add theirs. I'm using left clicks. Right clicks will bring up options depending on the part of the screen clicked. If you add siblings without parents - as previously noted - it will create a set of unknown parents. Is this what you're getting or is it two marriage events to the same person? I agree you shouldn't have to go through unlinking for every family Kathy On Monday, April 7, 2014, MikeFry emjay...@gmail.com wrote: On 07 Apr 2014 16:44, singhals wrote: I find the death record for X; it gives his parents. [LegacyUG] Toolbar problems, et al
I have just now upgraded to 8.0.0.414 Deluxe from 6.x Deluxe. I'm not loving it yet and that's putting it lightly. The only serious difference I see is visual, which to me matters least. What I was hoping for was better function. Such as typing in Dekalb as a location and getting a list of everything (in my Locations list) with the word Dekalb in it. I was greatly disappointed to see that this still hasn't been fixed. I cannot fathom why. Not to mention, that I have gotten more error messages today (my first day with 8) than I ever did the entire time I've been using previous Legacy versions... which is about .. I don't know... a lot of years. Anyway, that's not why I'm here. I'm here because I wanted to see if anyone else has had problems with the custom toolbar. I spent a great deal of time figuring out what it was that I wanted and didn't want. Satisfied, I went to make a simple edit (I was citing a Master Source for a Residence) in my file. I got an error message, the software crashed and my toolbar disappeared into thin air. *poof!* Is this the kind of thing that I have to look forward to now? Tons of glitches and it not remembering anything? I'm GREATLY disappointed and am thankful that I didn't uninstall 6.x. I'm also greatly disturbed that I paid so much for a glitchy upgrade. If the only enhancements are visual, because clearly other new features are buggy, then I don't really see the point of the upgrade. So! Has anyone else had this problem? How can we fix this to make it the better software again? TIA! I have had to upgrade my computers to Win 7 pro [I've been an XP user]. I'm still using Legacy 7.5 (Deluxe) and have all the upgrades. When I moved my Legacy files to my new DELL desktop almost all the dates are gone. I used restore but find that some of the people have years but no dates and months. I hoping it's just a case of not clicking the right button. They are on the laptop but did not transfer to the desktop. Any ides why? Marie, I suspect that there may be some inconsistencies in ‘date format settings’ either between Windows on the laptop and desktop, and/or between Legacy on the two machines. I would check date formats in both Windows and Legacy on both machines and see whether something looks inconsistent. I did have a few problems - one serious one - when I first moved over to version 8, but Legacy staff were very helpful over the serious problem (which was fixed) and most of the little glitches that people found were soon dealt with. How can we fix this to make it the better software again? There are several ways, and not just cosmetic ones - in which Legacy 8 is better than earlier versions. If you are still using Legacy 6 then you have denied yourself many improvements and advanced facilities, but if you feel you don't need them then that obviously isn't a problem to you. You will, though, find it increasingly difficult to get support as Legacy 6 becomes more and more a distant memory. Hello, I am glad you wrote this. I had the same problems when I was using Version 8. I got tired of the crashing and went back to using version 7.5. It will suprise me if anyone else responds to your e-mail. I have wrote to LUG and no one, I repeat, no one answers my mail. I am sorry you feel you haven't had any help from here, Lloyd, but you should remember that this list is chiefly a users-helping-user group. There will be times when someone posts in with a question to which none of the LUGgers know the answer. I'm sure I'm not the only one who definitely does not want the list flooded with messages from people just saying I don't know. We are fortunately that members of the Support staff do spend time here and will often post solutions to specific problems or will answer specific questions about the software, but if you feel you have identified a bug this should be notified to Legacy via the link on the Legacy Home tag and if you have a particular difficulty in using the software you should contact Support directly. -- Jenny M Benson Legacy User Group guidelines: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Etiquette.asp Archived messages after Nov. 21 2009: http://www.mail-archive.com/legacyusergroup@legacyusers.com/ Archived messages from old mail server - before Nov. 21 2009: http://www.mail-archive.com/legacyusergroup@legacyfamilytree.com/ Online technical support: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Help.asp Follow Legacy on Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/LegacyFamilyTree) and on our blog (http://news.LegacyFamilyTree.com). Goto the Options tab. Change Colors button. Click on one of the children. A window will open where you can change the text colors for male, female, and unknown. Re: [LegacyUG] Female font colour on main view
Hi Gwen, Note there are quite a number of preset colour schemes to choose from in Legacy 8 so before you start your own customising, you might want to check them out and start from the one you like best - there are far more than are offered during installation. On the Options Ribbon, click Change Colours (or right clicking on an empty space on Family View will bring up a menu with one of the choices Change Colour Scheme - this gets you to the same place). To try a different colour scheme click Choose an Alternate Colour Scheme Note some have Tab as part of their name. This refers to the Header style of the windows within Legacy and can be changed from Options - Customise - 9.2 - so if you like the colours but prefer the other Header style, that's the place to go. Now for your question. When in Change Colour Scheme mode - Click on a Child. There you can choose different colours for male and female and unknown gender. These colours are used on Family View in the Child List only, in Pedigree View and in Index View, When you're happy with the colours, don't forget to save your scheme. Use the Options button in the Pink box or the save at Options - Customise - 9. The look of Legacy is so customisable. The difficulty is that there are 3 different places to go. The Pink box section (9.1); the 9.2 options (and that's where Home View colours are changed); and the Options Tab Style and Tab Colour. When you save a colour scheme you save all these options. Did I say just 3 different places? Ribbon colour and style are set from the Design drop down on the Ribbon. The colour settings were one of the things I worked with in the pre-release period. If you think they're complicated now and not all you desire, you should have seen them then ;-) More than you asked. Re: [LegacyUG] Toolbar problems, et al
Well said Jenny, and I agree wholeheartedly. The response from both users and the Legacy staff is fantastic. I guess if you only follow the replies when you have your own personal problems, then you would miss the amazing amount of help on this list. ...and as you say, you can also contact Support directly.
