Re: [LegacyUG] Location options?

2014-09-23 Thread Cathy Pinner
Another way to work on locations that may be useful is to use the Search
and Replace from the Search Ribbon.
Find where: Lists-Location [for the long name]
Lists-Location Short [for the short name]

Depending on what needs fixing, this may be an option you've overlooked

that level. city, , state, country for example. Address, city, county,
state, country will also cause a failure because there are five levels.

Brian,

Thanks so much for your detailed reply. However, you wrote,

That works find in the birth and death fields, but has no effect in the
event location field. In one case I tried both a CTRL-u and a CTRL-i and
it underlined the word but did not italicize it.

To change report spacing select the page layout tab then click the
custom report spacing button. There are a number of line spacing options
there that may give you what you want.

The line for marriage is a new addition in response to a problem report.
It is a placeholder when a marriage has no data entered but does have a
source. We needed to insert something where we could include the source
citation. Before the recent update we were not including source
 citations for marriages without data.

There is no option to change the way pictures are included so the line
under the caption cannot be removed.

Although you cannot use the format buttons to set the format in the
Event for the Event Name, Description, Dates or Places you can select
the text and use CTRL-i to set italics, CTRL-b for bold, CTRL-u for
underline and CTRL-s for superscript formats.

If you try to add those format codes to Event names, dates and places
though you will find that the event with format codes will become a new
Master Event Definition for each form of code/code combination and
places enclosed in format codes will also be new places in the Master
Location list. For Events you will then have to define your own event
sentence(s) for the new event definition. I did not test the impact of
format codes around dates and date checking for invalid dates in
Potential Problems. On the Chronology tab the event with a formatted
date does sort correctly so the date may be working as a good date.

I see two others have already replied re use of the quoted name to have
Legacy use a middle name or nickname in reports.

The best way to figure out where the pdf went is to create another one. When
the Windows box comes up on your screen where you need to give the pdf a name,
look and see WHERE the pdf is saving too. You can then exit out without
actually saving the second pdf. You should now know where the first pdf is.

Re: [LegacyUG] Repeating Source Pictures/Documents on Reports

2014-09-23 Thread singhals
It would seem to me that when there is one and ONLY one
source in the Master Source list, a(any)the) program ought
not need too much more to identify an ibid or an idem or
even an op cit. Yet, none of them seem to. :( Agreed that
when person A has 10 source citations and person B has 8 and
person C 16, ibid probably won't work real often, but op cit
certainly should.

IS that subsequent citation thing working for you? I'm not
seeing any difference in my output. Yes, I know I can edit
it after creating the file, but _having to_ seems unnecessary.

We had a big discussion here in 2009, where some people were bemoaning the
fact that ibid had stopped working in the then latest release. Some points:
- ibid is only useful for a citation where the master source is identical
to the one in the immediately preceding citation. The way that reports are
constructed, we have little control over the order of citations in
 footnotes.
- Legacy uses the concept of 'subsequent citations', where an abbreviated
form of the master citation is used if that master was cited anywhere above
 in the list of citations.
- If both the master and detail information in a citation are identical to
a previous citation, then Legacy should simply use the same footnote number
in the report, rather than create a new footnote. It was not clear whether
 this was always working.
- Subsequent citations get very complicated when dealing with SourceWriter
sources. Bugs were logged. I haven't checked whether any work has been done
on those issues. Many e-mails in the LUG archive.

Again, not so far as I can tell. Another argument against

Twice is overkill. I have gone through and tried numerous things with

RE: [LegacyUG] Attaching a PDF file to email

2014-09-23 Thread Michele/Support
When you try to attach the pdf to the email and the Windows dialog box comes up
make sure that ALL FILES is selected in the dropdown box at the bottom. If the
email thinks you are attaching a photo, it might have that box set to image
files.

Re: [LegacyUG] Repeating Source Pictures/Documents on Reports

2014-09-23 Thread Ward Walker
Laurel,

I am reminded now, by looking at my own data, that subsequent citations only
seem to work for SourceWriter sources, not with Basic sources. You could
request a Legacy enhancement to at least drop the media from subsequent
Basic sources. In the meantime, have you considered attaching the picture to
the source Detail instead of the Master? That way you could attach it to
only one of the citations, instead of all of them.

As an aside, it seems unusual to have a birth certificate in a Master
source. More common would be for the master to represent a collection, and
the individual certificate to be in the Detail portion of the citation. You
can still easily cite the certificate more than once, using the source
clipboard.

One further thought: Do the readers of your reports really need to ever see
a picture at all within source footnotes? Especially when it is hard to
read. You can still attach the picture for your internal reference, without
choosing to display it in the report citations. Also, pictures that do
display well, like photos of people, can optionally be attached to an event,
in which case they will show up just once.

Thank you Ward and Cheryl for your replies. I will contact Support about my
emails. The situation was a Master Source repeating on the reports right
after the exact Master Source before it -- with the same picture of the
birth certificate repeated. I could handle the repeating Source if the
picture didn't repeat. It just seems a whole big mess of citations
compared to the older version. Thanks again. Laurel

We had a big discussion here in 2009, where some people were bemoaning the
fact that ibid had stopped working in the then latest release. Some
 points:
 - ibid is only useful for a citation where the master source is identical
to the one in the immediately preceding citation. The way that reports are
constructed, we have little control over the order of citations in
 footnotes.
 - Legacy uses the concept of 'subsequent citations', where an abbreviated
form of the master citation is used if that master was cited anywhere
above in the list of citations.
 - If both the master and detail information in a citation are identical to
a previous citation, then Legacy should simply use the same footnote
number in the report, rather than create a new footnote. It was not clear
 whether this was always working.
 - Subsequent citations get very complicated when dealing with SourceWriter
sources. Bugs were logged. I haven't checked whether any work has been
done on those issues. Many e-mails in the LUG archive.

Hi, I subscribed about a week ago, but I am not receiving any emails. I
see a question I posted shows on the usergroup and I was hoping someone
could help me with it. Here it is again:

I just recently upgraded to Legacy 8 and I use the Basic System for
 sources.
I have a 2 part issue: firstly, does ibid not work? Under Customize
Legacy - Sources, Section 7.8 it says Use ibid for repeating Master
 Sources
(this only applies to Basic-Style sources). I have this ticked, but so
 far

So far as I can tell, no it isn't working. Never has for me.

this has failed to work on all types of reports. The 2nd part is that I
like to attach a jpg picture of documents to the Master Source. The
picture always appears twice on reports - once with the first Full
 Citation
and then again with the subsequent citation (hence my question about
 ibid).
Is there anyway to only have the picture appear with the first citation.

Again, not so far as I can tell. Another argument against
putting pictures with/in/on sources, I guess.

Twice is overkill. I have gone through and tried numerous things with
report options, but nothing works. My reports printed fine with the
 older
version of Legacy that I was previously using. Any advice would be
 appreciated. Thanks.

You are not doing anything wrong, 1/2 children show only when they are
linked to one of the two people who are spouses in the current family view.

Only 2 children show with the first wife because they are the only
children linked to that couple (children of wives 2 and 3 are not 1/2
kids here).
When the second wife is selected only the two children linked to him
show (from this I assume he and the second wife had no children together
and she has no children from another marriage). They show as 1/2 kids
because the second wife is not their parent.
The 5 children show with the third spouse because three children are
linked to the third spouse and two are linked to him.

Re: [LegacyUG] Formatting options in reports -- Are any of these possible?

2014-09-23 Thread Brian/Support
The Event/Fact, Description, Date and Place fields are not WYSIWYG (What
You See Is What You Get) fields. When you use the CTRL-key to format
those fields, including the place, you should see a string of funny
characters before and after the text. Those strings of characters are
the format codes I mentioned. They tell the reports to turn on the
attribute then turn it off again. You only see the text with the format
applied in reports. Not sure where you saw the format applied, I did not
see it on the event edit screen nor on the individual edit screen.

Remember also my warning about the effect of using those format codes in
place names. New York, New York, New York, United States is NOT the same
location as that location with those format codes surrounding the name.
Unless you are using the same set of format codes on every location you
will have multiple copies of the location when you have places with and
without format codes added or with different combinations of codes like
underline plus Italic and underline only.

In family view all the format codes are ignored in the display of the
vital events. In Descendant View the place names were displayed only
with the format codes not as WYSIWYG. In Chronology View a place name
with underline added caused every following line to be underlined in the
report style (with the option to have places displayed in reverse order
the format on code at the start of the place name is not followed by a
format off code because that is at the beginning of the place name after
the country name which precedes the city in that option. It would be
interesting to see how the display would look with all locations having
formats applied, the format off codes after each country would turn off
the underline then it would turn back on with the city name.

Have I convinced you yet that trying to put format on Event Names,
Descriptions, Dates and Places is not a good idea?

Bryan,

I should have said, that where I am seeing the results of my formatting
attempts is on a descendant narrative report .pdf. What I am attempting to
format is a sic.
Thus I have a Salford Twp., which is frequently referred to -- in wills
etc.-- as Sulford Twp. So I sometimes try to enter
Sulford [*sic.*] Twp.
or perhaps
Sulford [*sic.*,* i.e.*, Salford] Twp.
I'm never trying to italicize the location itself.

Re: [LegacyUG] Attaching a PDF file to email

2014-09-23 Thread Stu and Priscilla Fanning
Hi Margaret,
When I save either a document, photo or a pdf, I rarely save it where the
computer would automatically save it. I choose a file -- documents sounds
like a good place for what you are saving or you could try a thumb drive that
you have connected. If you have a lot of pdfs for a particular family, make a
new folder in documents or on the thumb drive with the family name. Or maybe
you would rather make a file or folder there with the name Legacy and then
another file or folder within Legacy with the family name. That way you
could have several folders there with different family names with multiple
documents in them.
Perhaps you are wondering how to get to documents. In my computer
there is an arrow pointing up next to the location that is originally offered.
Continue to go up until you find This PC which, at least in my computer, lists

desktop
documents
downloads
music
pictures
videos
and any thumb drive that you might have connected.

Note where it is that you file the pdf and then when you want to add it
to your e-mail, you will be able to go right to documents or the thumb drive
or wherever you have saved it.

I hate it when I cannot find something!!

Priscilla

Re: [LegacyUG] Formatting options in reports -- Are any of these possible?

2014-09-23 Thread Cathy Pinner
Hi Pat,

I hadn't thought of doing that. That's a good solution for some things.
Your problem may be where you are trying to do the edit.
You need to edit existing locations in the Master Location list unless
you want the location with and without the formatting.
It works for me.
I chose a location used in a Residence event and the italics are there
in the reports.
I chose to edit a location for another event in the Event dialogue just
by adding formatting to part of it and it asked if I wanted to save a
new location.

Of course if you want the location without the italics as well then
you'd have to have two entries in the Location list which were identical
apart from the italics (or whatever other formatting you applied).

I note that formatting for a vital event location doesn't show through
onto Family View but is there in reports.

When you tried to use both italics and underline, were you trying to do
both at the same time.
that is: highlight the bit you wanted formatting and then go Ctrl + u
and then immediately Ctrl + i?
If so, that's why it didn't work. You have to highlight the bit you are
formatting again, otherwise you've just added the second format to the
end of the highlighted section.

 Bryan,

I should have said, that where I am seeing the results of my
formatting attempts is on a descendant narrative report .pdf. What I
am attempting to format is a sic.
Thus I have a Salford Twp., which is frequently referred to -- in
wills etc.-- as Sulford Twp. So I sometimes try to enter
 Sulford [/sic./] Twp.
 or perhaps
 Sulford [/sic./,/i.e./, Salford] Twp.
I'm never trying to italicize the location itself.

 Pat

On 9/17 this email was on the List:

We are working on a direct import of TMG files. So, I recommend waiting
for that to bring your real data into Legacy. In the meantime you can
play around with Legacy and get to know it some.

[LegacyUG] Family File Statistics - Individuals born after 2000.

2014-09-23 Thread Ronald E Howell
Hello Group,

Just found the 'Family File Statistics' report and noticed there is a
'Births By Era' section with a sub section for 'Individuals Born After 2000'
and on my file this section had '0'. I have 4 grandchildren born after
2000. Am I missing something?

Thanks (as usual),

Ronald E Howell
