Yes, I know that you rt click and the Customize Family View Information pops
up and I know how to change, my Field Names are: Birth Date/PlaceAge at
DeathDeath Date/PlaceBurial Date/PlaceCause of Death - [Name to Display =
DthCau]  , Then I close that pop-up window and the Individual's page that I'd
been looking at in Family View, I open his individual page and now my options
to fill in are:BornChr...I don't want this , I want Cause of Death or
Display name= DthCauDied...BuriedI have the age of death on the Individual
screen to the right, which is where it's been since version 5 if I remember
correctly.   I have been able in the past to have the DthCau (Cause of death),
so my question is still what happen to it and how to get it back, obviously you
can't type in from the Family View, so I need that area to be able to type in
on the Individual's page.Thanks,Syble

Hi Syble,

The Family View is just that - a view of certain fields.
When you go to the Individual Information page that allows you to update the
key fields that belong in that area.

The Cause of Death [I presume that is what you mean by DthCauthen ?] is added
in the Notes screen - there are three tabs - General; Research; Medical - it's
the Medical Tab where you enter Cause of Death.

Hope that helps ... Susie Z

I then reinstalled it without the compatibility fixes but still - no work.

Re: [LegacyUG] Event field "Attribute"

2014-11-28 Thread johnmtownsend2000

Thanks Brian and Michele. With your clue that perhaps the original Gedcom file
is the source, I think I have solved the origin of the Attributes event field.
This probably is not of much general interest, but for anybody else who will be
trying to import an old Roots3 database into Legacy, for what its worth I’ll
describe the situation.

I went back to look at the Gedcom file (created from a Roots3 database in Aug
2005 so maybe this is an outdated Gedcom specification) and indeed it contains
lines saying simply ATTR *. Roots3 used the asterisk symbol to flag direct
line ancestors, so that is the “attribute” being referred to. I should have
picked this up right away, but I guess I edited some of the direct line
individuals to remove this Attribute event right after the Legacy import when I
was still getting acquainted with Legacy. I didn’t recognize this Attributes
event as a problem, nor appreciate its source and extent for awhile.

Since Legacy keeps track of direct line ancestors differently, this Attribute
field is clearly unnecessary. So the way to eliminate it is to edit the Gedcom
file with a simple global Find and Replace (with Notepad for example) replacing
all lines saying 1 ATTR * with nothing. This leaves empty lines in the Gedcom,
but the subsequent import by Legacy seems to work fine- the empty lines in the
Gedcom are ignored. And now there is no Attribute event for any individual.

I have no idea where an "Attribute" Event would come from either. The
GEDCOM spec has an "INDIVIDUAL_ATTRIBUTE_STRUCTURE:= but there is no
"Attribute" Event nor is there a TAG value for Attribute like ATTR. The
structure of an attribute is similar to an event but they are just
preceded with one of the Attribute type tags below.

The Attribute Types allowed in the Spec are: CAST (caste), DSCR
(physical description), EDUC (Scholastic achievement), IDNO (Natinal ID
Number such as SIN(Canada) or SSN (USA)), NATI (National or tribal
origin), NCHI (number of children), NMR (count of marriages), OCCU
(Occupation), PROP (possessions), RELI (Religious afiliation), RESI
(Resides at), SSN (Social Security Number), TITL (Nobility titles) and
FACT (General catch all). In Legacy many of those items are Event names
such as Education, Occupation, Religion, etc.. Only someone familiar
with the software that created the GEDCOM containing that Attribute
Event would know where and how it is used. In this case that would be
Roots 3 or 4 if John's recollection of the source for his GEDCOM is correct.

[LegacyUG] Error Messages during Check/Repair

2014-11-28 Thread Wes
While editing my grandmothers data, I noticed a Potential Problem. It
indicated there was too much time between children. However, there is
only 1 child.

I did a backup and ran the Check/Repair. It indicated an error and
suggested I run the Compact. I did that then re-ran Check/Repair.

At step 43 of 193 it encounters an error. If I click on YES, it repeats
the error message. If I click no, it moves to step 44 and completes
normally.

Is there any way I can determine what is causing the error?

Thanks

When you unlink a father from a marriage, any children are also removed from
him, but stay linked with the mother. That's why Sarah is no longer a child of
John.

Suggest you get things straight in your own mind before pruning and grafting
within a tree. Have a very good idea (on paper) of how you want things to end
up looking. Now, create another diagram of how things look now. You'll want to
record the RINs on the individuals and the MRINs on the marriages.

Now, it's a matter of unlinking and relinking children so that they're with the
right marriage(s) i.e.the right set of parents. Any duplicate people should be
unlinked from everyone, and then deleted.

Hi Barton,

You have to keep unlinking incorrect relationships and then relink. The easiest
way to get the parents - child link correct is to start with the parents and
add the child (choosing of course the option to link to existing person as
they're already in the database).
LNU? I think you mean Last Name Unknown. I get over this by using the
husband's surname in privacy brackets so that it never prints but shows on
screen. Then I don't have a host of Elizabeth's in a list and have no idea
where they fit.

John and Elizabeth's son John is correctly listed as their child. But

Sarah the daughter of Elizabeth and John?

When you unlink a father from a marriage, any children are also removed from
him, but stay linked with the mother. That's why Sarah is no longer a child of
John.

Suggest you get things straight in your own mind before pruning and grafting
within a tree. Have a very good idea (on paper) of how you want things to end up
looking.

The
easiest way to get the parents - child link correct is to start with the
parents and add the child (choosing of course the option to link to

[LegacyUG] Marriage Mess

2014-11-28 Thread Barton Lewis
I have an ancestor married twice to the same woman although they only
married once. How do I duplicate the extra marriage? I thought I could
merge the 2 women but there is only the one - it's the marriage that is
duped, not the person.

For this same ancestor, whose first wife is unknown though they had
children, I have a second unknown marriage where there were no children.
This is wrong and this marriage should also be deleted (there were only the
2 wives). How do I do this please?

Thank you.

Wonderful. Somehow "verified" had been checked - now it is not, and the
Source list is visible again. (From which, it is clear that I am not in the
habit of noting that I have verified any sources. I will now consider that
facility.)

Many thanks.

Cecilia,
Open the Master Source List. Over on the right you will see some checkboxes
just below the Help button. Make sure that none of these boxes is checked.
