Re: [LegacyUG] Descendant chart without siblings

2015-01-13 Thread Cathy Pinner
Hi Danny,

If you just want the line from one person to another, then use the
Relationship Calculator on the Tools Ribbon - see the Print options there.
If you want all the direct ancestors without their siblings, then you
want an Ancestor Chart, not a Descendant Chart.
If you want an ancestor chart without all the branches, export the
relevant people to a new Legacy file, make the chart and then delete the
file.

 Surely it must be possible.

RE: [LegacyUG] Event Info Pop-up

2015-01-13 Thread Brian L. Lightfoot
Thanks Jenny. My annoyance at the feature is exacerbated by the fact that I
tend to work in a split screen mode. Legacy is effectively only half the width
of the monitor screen and the other half is devoted to various research windows
outside of the Legacy program, browsers, documents, pictures, etc. (this works
well with large monitors in excess of 24) While working on any given person, I
am doing the majority of additional work either adding new events or modifying
existing events thus the reason for the mouse constantly hovering in that area.
I don't remember this being a feature in v7.5 and I don't recall this being
mentioned in any what's new text about v8.

Strange that the programmers thought it important to allow one to turn off the
Tool Tips Pop-Up feature but left this one out of the Customization menu. Oh
well, if I can't turn it off, then I'm just going to have to remember to move
the mouse out of the Events list.

Jay,

That works for the “delete” lines, but doesn’t help with the “add”
lines that are needed for the “secondary” individuals to get their
“own” event.

I don’t want to give up the Share feature of Legacy because it’s a big
time saver. But I do want accurate trees in Ancestry to help with my
research, and in TNG (though I’m just starting there) to get my tree on
to the Web.

I ‘m going to play around with importing the text GED file into Excel
and writing some VB macros to do what is needed. Was hoping to avoid
that effort.

Try Using Notepad++ for editing your gedcom

Search for
2 _Shar

and select the find all lines with this

then repeat the process for the 3 _Role

Then at least you can see all the lines and I think you can even delete
them all at once.

Otherwise I would just go back to Legacy 7.5 and use that to keep in
sync.

The partial GED file below shows that the changes are not complicated
and could be made manually in a text editor – except for the fact that
family files may have 100s or 1000s of shared events/individuals. Way
too many to do by hand.

Re: [LegacyUG] Event Addresses

2015-01-13 Thread Arthur Pauline Kennedy
Thanks for the reply, Wendy. In response:

On 13/01/2015 00:57, Wendy Howard wrote:
 Hi Arthur,

In Legacy, there are addresses and locations. They might appear to be
the same, but they're separate fields in the program.

1... the Event Address list contains a lot of duplicates... Is there a
way to get round this so that they are automatically combined?

I choose to put the entire address into the Location field, and don't
use the Event Address field at all (except for some early entries that I
haven't changed yet). That's my choice, others may do things differently
 - Legacy is a very flexible program, so there are choices like this to
 be made.
In my current program I've only got part-way through converting the
single-field locations into separate location and address fields, and my
experiments so far make me wonder if I should be recombining them. As
well as the issue I've had here in Legacy, a different program has put
the Address data into the event Notes field, which is clear enough and
presents reasonably on the reports I would do, but doesn't seem quite
right to me.

In my experience, before I made this decision to use only Locations,
you're not given the opportunity to apply an existing address.
This kind of rings a bell with me from when I tried this out years ago
in v.5, and since I could see I was going to end up with a long long
list of addresses I decided to stick with the single field. (It's only
in my current software that I've actually started making the changes.)

You can combine Event Addresses if you wish - go to the Master Event
Address List (View Master Lists Address Lists Event), select one
address then click on the button Combine the highlighted event address
with another one in the list; next click on the address you want to
combine this one with, then click on the button which now says
Highlight the Destination, then Click this Button. You've now combined
the two addresses, and only the second one remains in the list.
Thanks - I just wondered if there was some way of doing this more
automatically.

 3. What is the best way to differentiate between apparently identical
addresses which belong in different locations (eg St Peter's Church in
 two different towns)?

My choice is to include the street address if I know it, and the town,
county (or whatever it is called in this particular place), and country.
I put all of this into the Location field.
Yes - if you're using a single Location field it's not really a problem,
because you'd get things like:
St Peter's Church, Bradford
St Peter's Church, Leeds
plus whatever other elements you choose to include, such as street,
county, country etc, and as these would all show in the location list,
it would be easy to select the right one.

What I'd wondered was, if you're separating the Address from the
Location, how in the address list do you distinguish between two
different St Peter's Churches. With parish churches, I don't usually
include a street name, so unless I included something else in the
address field I wouldn't be able to tell which was which.

If, as you say, there isn't an option to select an existing address when
entering a location, then at least the potential confusion is avoided
there. But trying to combine addresses could be a lengthy process as it
would involve a search list for each one to see who used it and which
location it was attached to, in order to make sure that St Peter's
Church, Bradford was kept distinct from St Peter's Church, Leeds etc.

Anyway, thanks for your suggestions.

Arthur

Nice thought, but that would apply to the other address too - Harrogate
was in the former West Riding but is now in North Yorkshire.

Whatever the explanation, I'd like to know what's going on. I've
converted some of the locations in my current software to show the
address in a separate field, but not others. I quite like having them
separated, but if they aren't going to import properly I'll have to
think about recombining them first.

I still wonder if there was some setting that I might have missed - or
is there some tool in Legacy which would tidy up these addresses?

Re: [LegacyUG] Returning to Legacy - general questions

2015-01-13 Thread Arthur Pauline Kennedy
Hi Wendy

Thanks for your comments. As you'll have seen from my other posts, I
still have concerns over some issues, but the updates situation is
something that I think I can live with.

When I first started using Legacy v.4, at a guess in about 2002, one of
the things that attracted me was that it was regularly updated - unlike
the program I'd been using until then, which seemed to have been more or
less abandoned by its owner. Updates then were frequent but small,
though over time they increased in size, and eventually, rather than a
small patch, they involved a download of the full set-up file. This was
a problem on dial-up. From what you say, updates sound as though they
are less frequent now, and with broadband shouldn't be a problem anyway.

I do realise that it's often the people with axes to grind who make the
most noise and post the most reviews. There's a Top Ten Reviews site
which puts Legacy on top (I think it was a single reviewer's
assessment), so I was just wondering if anyone could account for the
discrepancy between that and Gensoft Reviews, which collates lots of
peoples' reviews and ratings - and which I've always thought of as a
pretty reliable site.

Anyway, thanks again,

Arthur

What you're seeing is a Windows 'Feature' of text fields that exceed the space

I've obviously read more than you have, then. On the first page (most
recent 20 reviews) the problems include:

Irritation with Potential Problems feature
Report layout issues (at least 3 different ones mentioned)
Installation issues (missing DLLs)
Research Guidance lost when upgrading
Jumbling of complex families (multiple marriages/children)
Wife's birth date attributed to husband in report

I'm still only trying out the program and haven't experienced those
particular issues, but as I've written elsewhere, I have experienced a
corruption of some event addresses when importing a .ged file. No-one
has been able to explain why, and while this is relatively easy to fix,
the worry remains that somewhere along the line I'll find something else
that got mangled. No-one has been able to explain the freezing issue either.

One comment on Gensoft Reviews with which I do agree is about the way
Legacy's website proclaims its superiority over other programs. The
comparison chart lists the features of Legacy v.8, but the comparison is
not against the currently available versions of other programs. For
example, RootsMagic is shown with v.4: this was available from
approximately December 2010 to December 2011, and RootsMagic is now at
v.7. This is not a fair comparison.

I do realise that it's often the people with axes to grind who make the
most noise and post the most reviews. There's a Top Ten Reviews site
which puts Legacy on top (I think it was a single reviewer's

discrepancy between that and Gensoft Reviews, which collates lots of
peoples' reviews and ratings - and which I've always thought of as a
 pretty reliable site.

Re: [LegacyUG] Event Addresses

2015-01-13 Thread Ward Walker
Just to add to the mix, here is another option that has been mentioned on
this list a number of times. It works for some people and others dislike it.
It works for me because I seldom record street addresses, and when I do it
is in notes. But I do like to record hospital, church, and cemetery names
right in the location field for vital events.

The method is to add the institution name in the same field as the
town/township, as in this example with 3 separate locations:
Spokane, Spokane, Washington, USA
Spokane - Fairmount Cemetery, Spokane, Washington, USA
Spokane - Sacred Heart Hospital, Spokane, Washington, USA

I like the way this sorts in the location list (either left to right or
right to left). It doesn't rely on using a 4-field convention.

Now, in non-vital Legacy events, I would put the institution name in the
event notes or description field, and use the city-only version of the
location in the location field. That way you can make the event readable
with the desired prepositions and punctuation.

Thanks for the reply, Wendy. In response:

Arthur

RE: [LegacyUG] Returning to Legacy - general questions

2015-01-13 Thread Denise Moss-Fritch
Arthur,

The Gensoft Reviews are written by individuals. The TopTenReviews genealogy
software evaluations are written by Katherine McEntire, an employee of
TopTenReviews (the Google + page for TopTenReviews describing Katherine
McEntire should be https://plus.google.com/107846926226096572547/posts).

I subscribe to lists for three other genealogy software. (I retired from the
software industry some years ago, so am interested in how each software handles
data.) Each of those lists have people who write about their problems and how
bad the software operates. As one person on one list wrote in response to one
of those negative posts, the many people who have no problems never write in
about the smooth operation.

What you should evaluate is how Legacy functions for you, with your
computer(s). Please remember that there is a very wide range of computers
(different operating systems, processor, RAM, hard drives, video boards, and
other components) running Windows, along with the other software on those
computers also having some effect.

So please, take the 'reviews' with a very large 'grain of salt'.

Best,

Denise Moss-Fritch

Re: [LegacyUG] Event Addresses

To add to my previous post, I have now found how to merge addresses in
the Event Address list (File Maintenance List Cleanup...), but it does
of course merge the entries for St Peter's Church in whatever town they
may be, unless there is some extra note or element to distinguish them.

One thing which I have yet to find is how to search in event addresses,
and this is rather putting me off using them. I know how to search for
people who have an event location which includes a certain word (eg a
town or road name which is not the start of the address), but not if the
keyword is in the address. Some other programs that I've looked at have
a global search option, which looks for a word literally everywhere in
the file - does this exist in Legacy?
