There doesn't seem to be a trial version for Family Bee. You have to pay the
$10 to try it out. Not good in my opinion since there's some complaints about
importing GEDCOMs.

I've yet to find an IOS App that can come close as a handy research app; Easy

I don't understand about the "business model", but it seems that it would be
a highly unsatisfactory method of storing family history date, as it would
require you to have Internet access at all times.

I quite often take my laptop computer to do research in libraries and
archives where there is no Internet access, and while I do print out my
Legacy To-Do list beforehand I also often want to look up people and their
relationships to check where the new material fits in.

Using cloud servers for backup or transfer is fine, but it seems crazy to
want to do everything there.

One way of doing it is by using Dropbox.

You can keep your Legacy data files in a Dropbox directory. I have done this
with Rootsmagic, where my wife and I access the data files from desktop or
laptop computers. It is best to turn Bropbox syncing off when actually
working on the file, and to make sure that one is only working in it on one
computer at a time.

This would probably work with Legacy v 7.5 or earlier, but would be awkward
with Legacy 8.x, which has a different default method of storing data files.
As a result of that I transfer the Legacy data from my desktop to my laptop
with a USB flash drive, and every time I change I have to do the "Restore
User Defaults" routine. But I still back the data file up to Dropbox.

Re: [LegacyUG] Families

2016-01-22 Thread Cathy Pinner
Cheryl,

I guess Families has a learning curve like any program.
There seems to have been a change to the Families Sync program to get
your data to the device OR I've learnt better how to use it as this part
of the process is much easier.
Both of these could cause negative comments on the Play Store.

I use it to view my data when out and about.

The reason I don't use it to enter data is that I mainly use the
SourceWriter system for entering sources and although the sync back from
Families preserves existing SourceWriter sources, you can't enter them
in Families - and of course there is no Source Clipboard to enable you
to source easily.

Cheers,
Cathy

Re: [LegacyUG] Status of TMG importer

2016-01-22 Thread Ed Ladendorf
Thanks Sherry. I have a chromebook, an android phone, and a desktop PC. There
is another possibility for some people who have something like I have. There is
Chrome Remote Desktop. This will allow you to remotely access your computer,
with Chrome or Android. This works very well, but if someone else is using the
PC, they will have to agree to give it up so you can access your files. So it's
not a perfect solution, but it works with an internet connection. So if you're
at a family search center, you will be able to access Legacy that resides on
your PC. It is also secure because you give it a pin number with a minimum of 6
numerals.

A good desktop program with storage of your data on a cloud service

with Families 2.0, you can work on your data anywhere! You don't even
need an internet connection, which you would need if you're working
with a cloud based program.  Just work on the file that's in Dropbox
on the computer you're using and then when you get connected, it'll
automatically sync to the web and back to your other computer.

Families 2.0 uses a sync program on the desktop to convert the Legacy
file to an iOS or Android format and then you can convert it back to
your Legacy file.

to import looses too much of my data.  However, using TMG, I store my files on
Dropbox.  That way they are backed up should I loose my hard drive.  They are
also accessible from any other Windows computer running TMG (TMG never
developed a Mac, iOS or Android app before going out of business).   In fact,
there are three of us working from three computers in two different states on
the TMG database.  We coordinate so that we don't have two people manipulating
the data at the same time.

I also store my Legacy data in Dropbox.  So I can install Legacy on my hard
drive on more than one computer and access the data from each.  Advise to make
sure you don't have the same data set open on more than one computer at a time.
I haven't tested that to see if anything breaks.  Making a change in any
database while making a change from a second computer usually means one
person's changes don't get saved or get overwritten.

I'm using Legacy in the free mode, as I am checking it out and waiting for the
TMG importer.  So I don't know if they have an Android or iOS app, but yes,
that would be nice.  Also Mac would be great as I have one researcher that uses
one and can't help enter data in TMG.  I'm also looking at RootsMagic, which
does import TMG and does have Android and iOS apps.  I haven't tested the apps
yet, but did learn that their TMG importer didn't import everything.  I will be
discussing that with their support staff.  Their exporter to the web has room
for improvement as well.  Haven't tested Legacy's exporter yet.

For me, whichever application gets the TMG importer right, that's the one I
will probably go with.  MacOS is my next priority, followed by iOS and Android.

Totally different business model. What you're asking would entail running
Legacy
Family Tree as a Web application rather than as a Desktop application. You
wouldn't then purchase the software, but simply pay a monthly subscription to
use it. In all probability, keeping the data on your PC would incur massive
costs as the data flows back and forth. It then becomes cheaper to keep the data
on the website and you've lost the ultimate ownership of it. Just like using
Ancestry's software to maintain a tree on their website.

Re: [LegacyUG] Status of TMG importer

2016-01-22 Thread Jamie Poindexter
Mike,

It could be more like Microsoft Office products, where you subscribe to
the software, such as Word, and you can save your documents in your
OneDrive account or on your computer or another cloud storage, such as
Dropbox. With the OneDrive (a cloud storage space), you can access
documents stored there from any computer, pad or smart phone that can
open or view a Word document. Same for Dropbox.

Ed,

I haven't adopted Legacy yet, waiting for the TMG importer as using a

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy GedCom causing RM to hang up

2016-01-22 Thread Evert van Dijken
You don't need a gedcom to import into RM (only if you want to exclude
notes etc. you have to use gedcom).
Yesterday I imported a legacy gedcom file into RM without problems (about
4 individuals, but it was only a basic gedcom. What format gedcom did
you use?
