Re: [LegacyUG] opening Legacy pages on one screen

Hello Kim,

I believe this only happens when Legacy is maximised.

Try this...  with Legacy on your number-3 screen, un-maximise it then
drag Legacy's window borders out to fill the screen.  Now close Legacy
and reopen it to see where it goes.

Works for me.

Re: [LegacyUG] Searching for Legacy email with reduced MH subscription

2023-12-31 Thread Dave Naylor

Hello folks,

This question keeps arising, so out of curiosity I just checked my own
recurring MH subscription to see what I was charged this year. My 2023
invoice from "Blue Snap Inc., Waltham MA" shows the item as "Complete
Subscription" with a price of 125.29 USD.  Then an additional VAT of 5%
with a price of 6.26 USD.  For a total of 131.55 USD.  A note below that
says "This transaction will appear on your bank statement as
BLS*MYHERITAGELTD"

I also checked my credit card statement and that is indeed what I paid
(except converted into Canadian dollars in my case).  So for me MH has
been keeping this agreement.

Happy New Year!

Re: [LegacyUG] Problems changing the size of the Legacy-window

Hello Christopher,

That's another old problem...

If Windows are maximised they will go to the default monitor (number 1).

The trick is to use window sizing for Legacy's opening page but set the

One of the best can't-do-without free programs is IrfanView.  It's a

Re: [LegacyUG] DNA

2020-04-13 Thread Dave Naylor
Years/versions ago I made many suggestions for DNA features to be added
to Legacy but as a lone voice in the wilderness they were all ignored.
The current DNA features in Legacy are so out-of-date that they are
worthless. There was never any benefit to putting all the STR values of
a Y-DNA test into Legacy.  Millennia could have done far better.

One of the suggestions was to provide a choice for autosomal tests, so
users could select this and in the Notes section show the testing
company and other details such as GEDmatch kit number, etc.  This would
then at least colour the DNA icon to show that a test had been taken.

Without this feature I've resorted to use of a "DNA test" event to
record the details (but obviously not the data).
I also use a "DNA match" event to record who else in my tree this person
matches (and vice versa).

I like Ward's suggestion of using hashtags for grouping but all my
research in that area is performed on spreadsheets where the
Triangulated Groups are more apparent.

sets are autosomal DNA. These have two purposes. Matches, with the
help of triangulation, can help to identify common ancestors among
people that have done their paper-trail research. The second purpose
is the ethnicity estimates, which are still more art than science.

In Legacy, the DNA dialog has a menu for selecting which company did
the Y-DNA or mtDNA test. Then you can record the marker values.

Personally, I don't use this. What I do use is hashtags to group
together individuals whose DNA matches suggest a common ancestor.

When DNA results entries were added to Legacy the style of DNA testing
being done by the various companies was different.

They tested and returned values for a very limited number of points on
the DNA molecule. If you open the DNA section and choose one of the
tests you will see how few values were tested. Nowadays all the
companies are doing a style of test that returns literally thousands of
values, the raw data from these tests is Megabytes of data, way too much

Re: [LegacyUG] Anyone know of a quick way to duplicate an individual?

2019-06-03 Thread Dave Naylor
One trick I used many Legacy versions ago to duplicate a few different
individuals probably still works but it may be more complicated than you
wish.

First, as with all experimentation, make sure you have a good backup of
your files.
Open a new *empty* Legacy file -- I named mine "empty.fdb"
Then open this "empty.fdb" file in Split View with your family file as the
second file.
Select your family file and drag and drop the individuals you want
duplicated over to "empty.fdb".
Select "empty.fdb" file and drag and drop the individuals back to your
family file.
Do not merge or permit auto-merge to combine them.

Obviously, if you wish you can edit or modify those "empty.fdb" records
before copying them back.

Have fun!

Re: [LegacyUG] Media Files - unlinked, but where do I find the item ?

2019-01-20 Thread Dave Naylor

Hello Chris,

If all else fails... one trick I've used for a few things like this is
to generate a gedcom of your database. Obviously for this time you need
to include graphic links. Then open the gedcom with a text editor and
do a Search for part of the filename. The line with that filename will
begin with a number, and the lines immediately above it with a lower
number will indicate the item that's linked to the filename.

This trick also comes in handy when searching for specific text that you
know exists somewhere in a Legacy file.

Hope this helps.

greyed-out title. Windows 10's main indication of active program is
now shown on the Task Bar (which may be hidden).

With two large (27") monitors and multiple windows open at one time

functionality to be unacceptable. Hopefully, with enough complaints,
it will be restored.

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy 7.5 and Windows 10

2015-08-24 Thread Dave Naylor
Actually, further to my previous message, there *is* a Legacy problem
with this Windows 10 feature change

Legacy's title bar does *not* grey-out the title to show whether it
is active or not. Perhaps that's the reason I am finding this
Windows change in functionality to be so problematic when using
Legacy along with multiple other windows.

For me, Legacy (ver. 7.5 and 8) are working as well as with other
Windows versions, however there is a Windows 10 feature-loss that I
am quite unhappy with...

Previous versions of Windows changed the colour of the program's
title
bar when that program's window was active. With Windows 10 that
functionality appears to have been lost! Now all that happens with
the
program window to show whether active or inactive is a greyed-out

One thing I create that goes over really well is a fan chart of each
person's ancestors.

I've created them using Legacy Charting for many people in my family
tree and have then had them framed as gifts.

The only (minor) problem is the inability in Legacy Charting to
specify
different box widths for generations 4 through 6 (which includes the
change in orientation between generations 5 and 6). I have input
this as
a suggestion but the reviewer didn't understand the reason for
needing
this so I doubt that this ability will ever be implemented (like most
of
my suggestions for Legacy!)

See an example of my wife's fan chart as produced by Legacy Charting

Many unique Legacy tasks can be accomplished by exporting to a
temporary database.

To do what you want I would use the Master Location list and tag all
individuals for the specific location -- sorting the locations
right-to-left should put them all together to make this task easier.

Then I would export those tagged individuals to a new temporary
database. Open that database. Go to the Master Surname list and
purge unused surnames. This should leave you with the surnames for
that specific location.

The way you have your locations formatted may impact this but perhaps

something along these lines will do the job.

Just ensure you don't get the temporary database confused with your
"real" one, and do delete the temporary one after it has served its
purpose.

Hope this helps.

Legacy *could* be immensely improved with the addition of certain DNA
features, however, recording autosomal matches is *not* one of them!

The only efficient way to record and compare autosomal DNA matches is
on a single spreadsheet. This permits you to triangulate your
matches. Lots of information is available that explains the
procedures for this. The best source for help is the ISOGG Wiki.

Why "in the old days"? Batch files still function quite well and I
use one (with Legacy's icon) to run Legacy... it does some things
such as comparing date/times of multiple family file copies before
running Legacy, then it runs Legacy, then after Legacy closes it does

further things including checking the Archive flags to see what needs

backing up and it performs those backups.

The batch code I use to run Legacy on Windows 8 is:

@echo off
echo:
echo DO *NOT* CLOSE THIS WINDOW
echo:
echo It will close after performing backups when Legacy closes
::
:: batch commands to be run before Legacy opens
echo:
echo ===
echo RUNNING LEGACY 8
start /DC:\Progra~2\Legacy8 /HIGH /WAIT Legacy.exe
echo ===
echo LEGACY closed
::
:: batch commands to be run after Legacy closes -- make backups, etc.
:End

Batch functions could be improved if Legacy had some command line
switches for its file maintenance choices -- especially check/repair
and compacting family files.

Hope this is of help.

One automated way (but not the only one) would be to export each file
as a gedcom for Legacy and then compare those two gedcoms using
either Windows own File Compare program (if it's in your version of
Windows), or one of the many free text file comparison programs
available on the internet.

To see if Micro$oft's file comparison program is in your version of
Windows, open up a Command prompt window and type "fc /?" -- without
the quotes.

If the RINs and MRINs are the same in both files this method should
provide all the differences in one pass. However if there are too
many differences the comparing program can lose sync between the two
files, and then you would need to delete the portion that had
succesfully been compared from both of the gedcom files (using
Notepad or other plain text editor), and then rerun the comparison on

the remainder. This process may have to be repeated a few times if
lots of critical differences.

If you use Micro$oft's FC program the differences are reported
on-screen. To get these into a file you will need to add the suffix
" > filename.txt" after the FC command.

Hope this helps.

Using Windoze make a copy of the original database under a new name.

Then open that copy in Legacy, unlink between the person you want and
the first one you don't want, so they are separate trees.

Then in Tree Finder, identify the tree(s) you do *not* want.
Highlight/Select that tree. Then Tag the Entire Tree (with an unused

Then go to Advanced Deleting and delete all records with that tag

On 12 Dec 2013 Jay 1FamilyTree wrote:

> My 'general' notes are filled with these 'spacation' errors as you call

If you imported a gedcom and got spaces in the middle of words then
this is *not* a bug. It's caused by using an incorrect import
option.

The original gedcom design for breaking up long notes into short
lines was to break them at a space. On import these lines were
rejoined and a space was added between them. However this resulted
in multiple spaces being reduced to only one upon import because the
quantity of spaces was unknown and so was assumed to be just one.

The gedcom design was later changed so that long notes were broken in
the middle of words. On import these lines are rejoined and no
spaces are added. This is the current standard.

Because some older gedcoms may contain notes with lines broken at
spaces, Legacy has an option to use either method.

If you ended up with spaces being inserted in the middle of words
then your gedcom was imported using the old standard. To correct
these re-import the data using the "Note Options" for "Lines are
broken in the middle of words".

Hope this helps.

I've found the best way (for me) to split a file is to simply use
Windows to make a copy of the original file and then using Legacy
remove the individuals that are not wanted. This latter step is so
easy if you first break the links closest to your split, and then use
tree finder to delete the unwanted sections.

As with *all* major database changes make backups every step of the
way so if something doesn't work as expected/wanted you can easily go
back just one step instead of starting over.

That has not been my experience!

For family reunions I often get large charts printed on 48 inch rolls
that extend over 25 feet in length. After extensive trials we
discovered that the best quality was obtained using JPGs and the
company printing them preferred to work with JPGs.

Both PDF and JPG quality is based on the amount of compression used.
So any discussion about quality must reference the compression.

PDFs will not handle the file sizes required for large charts unless
they are highly compressed and then the quality degrades far below
what is acceptable.

JPG sizes don't seem to be limited. So for printing these charts I
create JPGs with *no* compression. The file size is huge but so is
memory stick capacity these days.

Don... when Millennia first added the capability to include DNA test
results I made the suggestion to automate the generation of an
ancestral paternal-only gedcom (for Y-DNA purposes) and an ancestral
maternal-only gedcom (for mt-DNA purposes). Since then there's the
additional need for an all-lineage ancestral gedcom (for at-DNA
purposes). As is obvious, these weren't seen as desirable features
for Legacy. So instead, Legacy users have to resort to using one of
the many add-ons or other utilities to fill this need.

I gave up wasting my 2 cents!

It's extremely frustrating when users on the many DNA forums ask
which genealogy program is the best for their use and we cannot
recommend Legacy for any DNA testing features.

My largest for one individual contains 12 pictures and these are a

The Picture Gallery opens immediately with all thumbnails -- this on

How much of your system's RAM is free when you experience the

I believe you are both discussing *different* Notes. Brian is
referring to the Notes for the Location, whereas Robert is referring
to the Notes for the individual's Burial.

Directions for getting to the cemetery would be more appropriate in
the cemetery's Location Notes. Directions for getting to the

The default for this is "USA" and is set in the file GeoCountryCodes.txt

If you wish to change the defaults in any of the Geotxt files it's
recommended that you keep the original file as is, and make a copy of it
in your Legacy folder with the name modified by appending -Alt to its
filename -- so the Country name file containing your modifications would
be GeoCountryCodes-Alt.txt

Legacy will first check for a *-Alt.txt file and if found will use it.

To make your change... open your newly-created GeoCountryCodes-Alt.txt
file in your text editor of choice (Notepad?) and scroll down to the USA
section. A plus sign needs to be prefixed to your choice to prevent the
default of "USA" being used for your "long location" names. So to have
"United States" as your choice, prefix a plus sign to it so it is shown as
"+United States" -- obviously without the quotes.

A minus sign (hyphen) is prefixed to the default for the "short location"
name if other than "USA" is wanted for it.

Good luck!

Well... one way would be to tag all Mayos with a unique tag number and
then export those tagged individuals to a new (temporary) Legacy file.
Then open that file and purge all unused locations. The remaining
locations are the ones you want.

Using temporary Legacy files in this manner can provide lots of
unprogrammed capabilities.

Yes! In early Pennsylvania and New Jersey (and no doubt other
provinces/states) some families used a single letter as a middle "name" in
order to identify their children. So all children of the same parents had the
same middle "initial" in their name.

In Legacy, I identify these from actual initials (where the middle name is
unknown) by *not* having a full-stop/period after them. Where the letter is an
initial for an unknown name it *is* followed by a full-stop/period. Obviously
if I know the middle name it is written in full.

I have lots of these in my tree where a single letter was used as a
middle name to denote the family. All siblings received the same
middle "name" letter.

I identify these in my tree by *not* having a period/dot after them.

Where I have a middle initial but not the full middle name I place a
period/dot after the initial letter.

Obviously I do not want Legacy adding, removing or changing these
subtle identifiers.

Not quite enough information provided to answer properly . . .

Do you want to *operate* Legacy in both languages or do you only want
to generate reports/printouts in both languages?

If the latter then the way you currently have Legacy installed will
suffice. When setting up your reports there is a button above the
Index Options named "Report Language". Clicking this button will
display your files and you need to select the appropriate language
file, such as "German (Deutsch).trn" Then the output will be in the
selected language (except for any notes, etc. that you have written
in English.)

Legacy by default is programmed to not have "County" or "Co." in the field
where users write the county name for USA locations. However this is a user-
selectable item and Millennia has provided a way, albeit not obvious, for users
that wish otherwise to have their choice.

I have arranged Legacy to function with " Co." after county names and have
absolutely no problems running Legacy this way.

To get this feature and change the default it is necessary to make a copy of
Legacy's GeoExtraCodes.txt file and name it to GeoExtraCodes-Alt.txt Then
edit that Alt file in a text editor (e.g. NotePad), following the instructions
at the beginning of the file, to obtain the choice you'd like.

There are messages in the archives detailing this procedure, or if you wish,
get back here for further details.

A little-publicized feature of Legacy is the ability to change these
defaults for user-customizations.

The Legacy folder contains a bunch of Geo*Codes.txt files which
control the location defaults. These files should *not* be modified.

However, when Legacy starts it checks to see if there are alternate
user files which override the above ones. These user files are named
Geo*Codes-Alt.txt.

So . . . to change the location defaults, copy the appropriate
Geo*Codes.txt file, modify it to suit your needs, then save it as a
Geo*Codes-Alt.txt file. Modification instructions are provided at
the beginning of each file's data.

To use 2-letter abbreviations you should create a GeoStateCodes-
Alt.txt file and amend the GeoStateCodes.txt data.

To add "county" to your locations you should create a GeoExtraCodes-
Alt.txt file and amend the GeoExtraCodes.txt data.

Get back to us if you need further help with this.
