Thank you. That worked out.

Now for a whole new question. (I recently downloaded V. 9 and resumed
working on genealogy after a long layoff, so will be peppering the list
with questions for a while.) I'm afraid I have forgotten quite a bit, or
perhaps, never knew enough.

I wish to indicate DNA confirmation for those ancestors that I have
documentation (DNA testing) for. I went to the DNA symbol using the icon
on the event screen. Problem 1: It did not list the Ancestry autosomal
test as an option for name of test. and problem 2: I typed info into the
notes space (the "Recorded Test" box would not allow input) but when I
closed the DNA screen the info I had input into the Notes space had
disappeared.

I am looking for a simple way to indicate which ancestors I have DNA
confirmation of. I am thinking of using the Hashtag function for that.

I have an event note. The heading is "Occupation". I have written the
note to start: "Elizabeth worked at"

The orogram sticks "She was employed" in front of the sentence I have

How can I get rid of the first three words. I have tried everything I can
see to remove it.

I think the reason that some users find that Report generation to be
overwhelming is that over the years Legacy has added more and more options
with a multitude of report types and appearances, all due to user demand.
Perhaps some users would find a simple one-button Report with no options the
easy way. But as we've all learned, there is no easy way in Genealogy.

Just my opinion.

processor and delete any information you don't want (uncles, aunts,
cousins.)

[LegacyUG] Which report?

2016-03-03 Thread Jane Sarles
I need a report that gives me, my 4th great grandfather and his
information, and all those who connect us, with their information. I did
the relationship calculator, but I need more information about each
person than it gives. Just the one line from me to the particular
ancestor, and all the details about those between.

What report do I use for this?

Thanks.

Re: [LegacyUG] How to accomplish a working data base of one family?

2016-02-26 Thread Jane Sarles
I don't wish to have just her standing alone. To research the
connection I will need her children's names and details, and her
husbands information. Sort of a total picture of everything I know about
the prospective family. Then I will be researching their children's
death records, obits, land, etc. so will need their information to be
all together so I don't have to keep looking back and forth . I guess a
family group report would give me everything to help the research, but
can't get one together unless I have her as wife to the family.

I am having a hard time making this clear. I like the idea of a new
mini-data base, but am not sure how to get there without re=inputting
everything on the husband and children. Perhaps do a focus group of the
husband, his parents, and the children of the father. Then I could just
put in the prospective wife by hand.

[LegacyUG] Search old messages

2016-02-26 Thread Jane Sarles
I need to search old messages for a particular topic, but cannot find
the way to do that. Can someone give me the link to the search option?

The problem I have is that I have a good candidate for the wife of an
ancestor, and I wish to construct a tree that I can use for research
that gives her as wife to my ancestor and gives everything I know about
them both and children, so I can use it for further research to prove
the relationship. Until I can more confidently put her in as wife, I am
loathe to put them as a couple in my main data base.

I am hoping that the old messages will contain a way to do this.

Thanks.

Re: [LegacyUG] Ahnentafel Report

2015-05-19 Thread Jane Sarles
I have requested this type of report in the past. I think it would be a
good thing, if possible, to be able to select the details that one would
wish to include. For example, one could include the birth and death
dates, and/or place, even spouses name, or not, as desired. Would that
be hard to incorporated? Options are available for most of the other,
currently available reports.

[LegacyUG] direct line report

2015-04-12 Thread Jane Sarles
I often need a report to send to cousins I have located online to show
exactly how we are related to the same ancestor. This means I need a
report that shows me, my parent, grandparents, gg grandparent, etc. back
to the ancestor. Only this line - not other relatives. Someone showed
me a report that would do this, but I do not remember, nor do I find my
notes on this.

Can anyone enlighten me about such a report. I remember it was fairly
simple thing.

[LegacyUG] Identifying lines on reports

2015-02-07 Thread Jane Sarles
I have seen reports that, after each direct ancestor's name, gives in
parenthesis their line - names for father, grandfather, ggrandfather,
etc., back to the first of the name. Is there a way to do that on an an
a Legacy Ancestor Book report?

I did a book for my granddaughter and she has a problem, when getting
back 8 or 10 generations, in knowing how the people relate to her
parents (which side of the family they are on. The report gives the
generation name - 8th great grandparents, etc., but she can't tell which
side of her family they belong to.

Why can Legacy not create an origin report for a living person and their

2015-01-13 Thread Jane Sarles
To all you who were so kind to help me in getting the reports done for
my granddaughter - I appreciate your help more than I can say. With you
kind help I was able to send her a complete Ancestor report, a
relationship chart showing her descent from a guy born in 1450, a
timeline of all her ancestors, and a fan chart showing her ancestry
graphically.

You know who you are. Thanks a bunch.

Re: [LegacyUG] Direct line descendant report

2015-01-11 Thread Jane Sarles
That is what I am trying to do - show my granddaughter how she is
related to a guy born in 1450. It gets too confusing to get all those
other siblins included.

I am still working on it. Now I am trying for a timeline chart and it
goes back different distances for different members of the same line.
This may just all be too darned hard for an old lady like me.

for different reports - like Timeline, with and without events., etc.

[LegacyUG] Merging files

2015-01-10 Thread Jane Sarles
I have a ged com of a DNA proven extension of my ancestor. Surprisingly,
I was able to use tagging and exporting to create a gedcom file of the
new information. Now I need to import it into my main family file, but
I am a bit nervous about messing things up. Will the program
automatically know where the new file is supposed to go? Or will it ask
me how to attach the new information to my old file? Just a bit of
simple idea of what to expect would make me feel much better about
attempting this. This list has so many people who are tactful and
understanding about those of us who struggle, that I am bold enough to ask.

[LegacyUG] Ancestor report

2015-01-09 Thread Jane Sarles
I am trying to find a brief readable easy-as-possible- to understand
report for my grandchildren (in their 20's) to see their forebears. I
seem to come up with a blank page at every generation, which wastes an
awful lot of paper. Also, I guess it is not possible to include the
listing of fathers that follows the name of a person in the descendant
report : ex: James Wells (John, Enos, Joseph, John) with superscripts
at those names. That is probably only available if one is going
downward in a descendant report. Pity.

But, the blank pages can't be right. What am I overlooking?

Carl,

You just saved me tons of time. If I have noticed that option I would
probably have hesitated to use it, not being sure of what it meant. It
is so great that people know what they are doing and are willing to share.

My most sincere gratitude.

[LegacyUG] Cleaning up Master Location List

2015-01-03 Thread Jane Sarles
Well, I am getting well along in my clean up. Doing it one by one, but
I stop and do the "Add USA" and combine duplicates frequently. Most of
the problems are commas I stuck in before I knew what I was doing. (I
guess that presupposes I know what I am doing not, which is not
necessarily the case.)

The main problem that takes so much time is that one cannot go through
in order, because every time an entry is corrected, the screen jumps to
the corrected list item and I have to find my place all over again. Is
there a fix of any kind for this? A way that allows the list to remain
at the same spot the incorrect item was located, so I can move on to the
next one to be corrected without having to hunt for it? Like a little
switch that toggles (wishful thinking, no doubt.)

Thanks for any helpful hints.

Jane S.

Re: [LegacyUG] Cleaning up Location list

2014-12-31 Thread Jane Sarles
I think I know the problem. Those entries that failed to work had
space, comma, space, comma, then the county name and state name. That
meant that USA would have been one field too many, so it wasn't added.
I am afraid if I use "find and replace" to replace the two space +
commas, I will mess something else up. I should probably just go
through one by one, to do it right.

Thanks for all you help.

My main cleanup task it that I originally input the state and left off

Even if there are other items (such as town names) in the same statement?

2014-12-30 Thread Jane Sarles
I agree about the country. My last ancestor to come to this country
came during the Rev War and many came in the 1600's, but all those early
ones were born elsewhere, so it would throw the whole thing off when you
put in their birth country.

I am plunging on with the township/town, county, state, USA thing. Thank
you for your input.

Re: [LegacyUG] Location report by surname or by state

2014-12-30 Thread Jane Sarles
Tessa,

Actually, I did get inspired and began to clean up my location list. I
still am not sure that it will work for what I need though. For one
thing it will give me every person, not just each surname. I guess I
can manually do a list from that, but not a very elegant solution.

I will see, once I get the location list cleaned up (if I live long enough).

[LegacyUG] Location report by surname or by state

2014-12-30 Thread Jane Sarles
I searched the message archives but did not see a solution to the
problem I have with a report. I wish to search a number of surnames
that are in a particular state. For example, I plan a trip to the
Kentucky History Center and would like to get a list of all the surnames
I have in that state. Surely there is a simple way to do this, but i
cannot figure it out.

I have done a location report and i see that I can print it, but I have
not done a very good job on inputting my locations. Some have the state
first and some have the township or county first. I have tried to clean
up the list but it would take years.

I also tried to do a search (detailed search option), but it asks for a
tag and I am not working with tags, but with locations. And I don't
want each person, but only each surname.

This probably isn't clear (I get that comment a lot) but what I wish to
do is get a list of surnames that have any event, birth, death,
marriage, whatever, in the state of Kentucky. It would be nice if it
could be further delineated by county, but at least by state.

Thanks.

Jane S.

[LegacyUG] Finding the focus group option

2014-12-28 Thread Jane Sarles
I have tried to use "Help" to get to the Focus Group function. The
directions do not appear to match my toolbar. It tells me to click
Focus Group on the "View" tab on the Ribbon bar. But there is no "Focus
Group" there.

What I am trying to do is get a list of the children of a particular
couple. It will give me a list of siblings of one of the children, but
that will not print, nor does it have spouse's names on it (which I
need.) I also need birth and death dates and location.

I see no way to get a report that does that for me, so I thought I would
make the children of the family as a focus group, but I can't seem to do
that either. Either I am awfully dumb (a definite possibility) or my
task bar does not match the Help instructions. I have the print manual,
but cannot lay my hands on it at the moment.

Can anyone suggest a simple way to get the report that I need? I just
want the children's list to research each one to learn about their mother.

Re: [LegacyUG] Tiny tafel

2014-12-26 Thread Jane Sarles
It is just a list of ancestors that one can use if there are a lot of
ancestors and you are checking them against other lists of surnames.

"A method of providing a compact way of describing a family database so
that the information can be scanned visually or by a computer. A Tiny
Tafel only lists surnames with Soundex codes, plus the locations and
dates of the beginning and end of that surname. First names, births,
marriages, deaths, etc. are not included in a tiny tafel."

Re: [LegacyUG] Tiny tafel

2014-12-20 Thread Jane Sarles
You are probably right, and I know they seem to be out of favor, but it
does seem a helpful thing to have an alphabetical list of surnames with
dates and locations appended. Such as when I see a list of surnames
that someone has that I may want to check against my own.

Thank you for the instructions.

Re: [LegacyUG] Attendees of Voice Recognition Webinar

2014-12-12 Thread Jane Sarles
Scott,

I use Dragon. Once it is installed you have a task bar. My Dragon is
quite slow to open so you may have to wait awhile for the task bar to
come up. If the center dot is red, you need to turn your microphone on
by clicking the red dot. It will then turn green. You can drag the
Dragon task bar over to your Legacy screen. Once you get your cursor
blinking in the field you wish to input to, pull down "tools" to
"dictation box" and speak the text you wish to input. That is all there
is to it.

Good luck.

Re: [LegacyUG] Where to put gathered information?

2014-11-21 Thread Jane Sarles
I have probably messed up already. I entered the files individually as
documents. I did not know I could attach a folder to the person. The
files were on my computer in separate folders, but when I put them in
Legacy (as a media file) I deleted them from the old location (one of
many folders on the family in question in "Documents".)

I suspect I am out of my depth, technologically speaking.

Re: [LegacyUG] Where to put gathered information?

2014-11-21 Thread Jane Sarles
OK, one of the things I have is the hours and locations of all the
libraries in the county where I know the Wells family lived. It doesn't
fit anywhere in Legacy that I can see, but it is useful information for
me when doing research. Please understand, this is just a sample of
the kind of thing I am talking about. Much of the info is nothing I
would ever put into the data base as event/fact. Perhaps, a list of all
the Wells people in the 1850 census of their county. Or the Barbados
history of a Wells family that MIGHT be mine. I am speaking of what
might be called ancillary information that will be useful when doing
research or just reviewing my data. As I say, I know I can put it into
Evernote (or One Note as the case may be), but wouldn't it be elegant if
there was a place in Legacy for it so that ALL our information for
genealogy could be in one place, instead of spread around in note
programs or separate files on our computer? Just a dreamer, I guess.

[LegacyUG] Where to put gathered information?

2014-11-21 Thread Jane Sarles
I have tried very hard to find a way to include in my Legacy data the
information I gather during many years of research. This includes
copied and pasted snips from the internet, correspondence by email,
responses on message boards, all the information I have gathered over
the years. I thought I would put it in the "General{ notes section of
the Notes part, but it didn't work because when I tried to do a
copy/paste, it just disappeared. I didn't really like that option
anyway, because you cannot arrange it in any meaningful way.

I know that some folks have suggested using an imaginary person, named
perhaps, Wells, Joseph Research, or some such. My problem with this
is, if I want to print out (or review) ALL the information I have about
a person, the notes in the imaginary person's file would not be included.

The solution may lie with using Evernote, but I do wish our Legacy had a
section similar to Evernote that allowed us to include and organize all
the information we have gathered about a person. Don't say that the
"Events/Facts would serve, since much of the information is conjectural
or at least not substantial enough to use as a fact.

2014-09-21 Thread Jane Sarles
Resetting the report options appears to have solved the problem. A
thousand thank yous; I didn't even know that option existed. I had done
the check/repair and the problem continued with the Preview as well as
the RFT.

Thanks again.

[LegacyUG] Report disaster

2014-09-20 Thread Jane Sarles
I solved the problem of the descendant report by inputting a report
name. However, the report that was created was a disaster. I have
checked my data in Legacy 3 times. It is correct as to the couple in
question, their children names. But where there are 10 children, the
report only gives 2. And the people are all mixed up and it has one
brother marrying another brother. It repeats the information about the
father twice. I just updated to the latest build - can that be the
problem? I have never had anything remotely like this happen before.

[LegacyUG] Report in Text or RFT

2014-09-20 Thread Jane Sarles
I wish to do a descendant report in RFT so that I can edit it before I
send it to a relative. However, when I try to do a report in RFT or
even text, it never happens - it just continues to do "collecting" and
never completes. I did check the archives for an answer, because I
remember having this problem before, but all I found was my question and
no answer that worked. I am naming the report, but it still is
endlessly "collecting."

Advice?

[LegacyUG] To input or not to input

2014-08-27 Thread Jane Sarles
I have an ancestor from early Virginia, Timothy Redding. He is found in
early records along with others, Francis, John, William, Arthur, etc.
Their relationship is not named and there is no clue as to what it may
be. I know that I can put those other guys in as unlinked people, but
they will not show up when I study my data and am trying to fit clues
together as to who Timothy's parents or brothers are. Am I correct in
thinking that it is not possible to have the other Redding men to show
up in family view or individual chart (which is what I use to do my
major work and thought.) If they are in as 'unlinked"? I seldom think
to go to the list of unlinked people to compare with data I am
discovering as I research.

Wondering how others handle this?

It does, and thank you. I like the tag idea and will probably try that.

I hope to end up with all those folks whom I have not verified with
documentation not printing, if I can construct a report which will give
either option, i.e. - print the unverified folks, or not print the
unverified folks. I wonder if there is an option to print or not print
based upon tag number?

Sometimes I hope for too much from the program. That may be the case here

Thanks again.

Sherry,

sorry to be persistent but it is not a Google issue. I have other
events on my Goodle calendar and they have a delete option. The Legacy
one is the only one that does not, whether I right click on it or go to
detail.there is NO delete option. My grandson, who is a computer
engineer, could not find a way to delete it either.

thank you for your response. I will try phoning support when it is not

Sherry,

There is no option to delete the event when I go to the goggle
calendar. It is there for many days, mostly every Wednesday forever. I
didn't put it there, Legacy did. Can I call their support and perhaps
they can help me get it off?Non Legacy items on the calendar have a
"delete" option. The Legacy stuff does not. That is a bad thing.

The properly named file title showed up on Families, but it is empty.

I guess this task is beyond me. I think I will give it up.

[LegacyUG] Back ups are in limbo

2014-06-20 Thread Jane Sarles
I just purchased Families in order to get my genealogy on my Ipad. When
I tried to transfer my data to the Ipad, I followed the instructions
given, but I have had the devil's own time trying to get it done. I
have spent 2 hours trying. The problem seems to be when the program
tries to go to get the file. I have a strange set-up on my desktop
computer regarding backups.

There are backups in a folder named Legacy Backups, but they do not show
up by opening the folder. It says the folder is empty. If I do a
search from "Start" the back ups show up. They are zip files. Can
anyone help me figure out what is going on?

See, Jay. I am in trouble the very first command. There is no "Tag
Records" option on my EDIT toolbar. In fact I do not see that command
"Tag Records" on any toolbar. There is an "Advanced Tagging" option on
the TOOLS bar. I do not see any other Tag option on any other toolbar.

Re: [LegacyUG] Ahnentafel report example

2014-05-20 Thread Jane Sarles
Thank you for trying, but you do not understand my level of expertise.
I have a big problem with tagging among other things. I just need to be
able to click on a report which, instead of giving me all of a person's
ancestors, gives only one direct line, and to include the bmd info as
well as events and children.

I have another genealogy program that offers such a report, so I know it
can be done.

Again, thanks for trying, but you don't know who you are dealing with here.
