[LegacyUG] Family dates have changed

2020-03-15 Thread ken gracia
I have just run a scan for any problems in Legacy 9 Deluxe. 3 A4 pages
of faults have shown up. The majority of faults are "Legacy Family Tree
9 Birth date more than 20 years after marriage date of parents". I am
very sure I didn't make that many mistakes when entering Dates. Does any
one have an idea what has happened here please.

Regards Ken Gracia

[LegacyUG] Legacy Program for Macintosh Computer - When?

2017-12-13 Thread Ken Veitch
Thank you, Chris and David, for the information and advice.

While I was hoping for some positive news about the development of a Macintosh
version it now appears to me that Millennia and MyHeritage have some serious
thinking to do about supporting the Windows version into the future if, as you
have indicated Chris, the program was developed using VB6 / MS Access and might
therefore be difficult to maintain/develop noting that Microsoft ceased to
support VB6 in 2008.

Notwithstanding the above (and admittedly I’m being a bit selfish as well) I
still looking forward to a Macintosh version; albeit arriving sooner rather
than later.

Regards,

Ken

[LegacyUG] Legacy Program for Macintosh Computer - When?

2017-12-12 Thread Ken Veitch
Hi Legacy List,

For some time now a number of Legacy Users have been asking about when a
Macintosh version of Legacy Family Tree will be released.

In August this year with the announcement of the partnership with MyHeritage,
Geoff made a comment that the development of a Legacy Macintosh version was a
priority and that with the resources now available from within the partnership
this should become a reality.  I haven’t heard any updates since that
announcement.

At this time, I like many others in this situation, operate Legacy Family Tree
within a Parallels virtual machine.  While many might view this as the norm, I
for one am getting frustrated and annoyed at having to open Parallels, launch
Windows 10, log into Windows, wait while Windows loads up, checks for updates,
installs any updates, restarts, loads antivirus programs, etc. all this just so
that I can run the Legacy program – this being the only program I need to
operate in Windows.

Over the years, I’ve continued to invest in Legacy and have come to appreciate
not only the flexibility of the program but also the great improvements that
are now being provided to users.

In saying that though, I’m arriving at a time at which I feel the need to make
a decision as to whether I should quite Legacy altogether and move to an
alternate Macintosh genealogy program (thus reducing my frustration and ongoing
costs in dollar terms) or continue using and maintaining Parallels and Windows.

There are a few contenders on the market at this time such as Heredis 2017
World, Mac Family Tree 8 and recently Family Tree Maker 2017.  It’s also
surprising to see that some of these companies offer a Macintosh and a Windows
version of their programs.

Legacy for Windows has matured to Version 9.0 and by all accounts is a stable
program, so surely it’s now an ideal time for Millennia and MyHeritage to
release a Macintosh version of Legacy Family Tree program.

Regards,

Ken

Hi,

Is there a way to change the default backup setting where version 9 backups
the file to I would like to automatically go to where I want to save it,

Re: [LegacyUG] Individual "O" not found

2017-05-29 Thread Ken N
I have this same problem and have not received any advice on how to fix it.

When you do that does the spouse show up as the number 2 spouse and no spouse
in #1.

What I have been doing when I find a match I say no and then merge manually
until this get fixed. Glad I am not the only one.

surname of the father, the given name of the father or the name of the farm
upon which the person lived. From my experience, the most difficult surname
problem is where a person acquires (de facto or de Jure) another surname, not

It should be possible in legacy to "mark" a surname as patronym. Persons may

The patronym IS the normal surname if you are researching those areas who have
subscribed to that practice. If a surname ends in a variation of "son, sen" or
"datter, dotter" then you KNOW it was a patronym. Anything else identifies a
residence where they lived at some point in their life. Those other names
often changed within a person's lifetime. So for example, if Ole Petersen
lived in one place when he was baptized, but lived somewhere else when he was
married and lived a third place when he died, he would have 3 different
"residence names" but he was still Ole Petersen. The inclusion of the
residence in a name was a means of separating individuals who also had the name
of Ole Petersen. In Legacy I use the AKA's to identify the residence name. By
the way, I have 27 direct line Ole Olsen's in my family tree and that residence
name keeps them all unique individuals (along with the RIN that Legacy assigns
them).

Sorry I should have said English. For example I have several hundred people
where I have entered details of the 1891 UK Census but have not put the date
in. I like to have the date as it then calculates age and puts events in order.

At the moment I am going through each person individually, checking if they
have the 1891 census, then bringing it up and putting in the date.

I was hoping there would be a way to go to the Master event list of something
and put in the date so that when I close it it will put the date in everyone
who has that event.

Are you talking American Censuses where the date is different for each entry or
English censuses where the date is the same for a census year?

If the latter, you can make the process faster by creating a search list for
the Event and then using the Repeat function of clicking on the date label to
enter the actual date.

[LegacyUG] We are very sorry. Please forgive us.

2016-02-25 Thread Ken McGinnis
Our old mail server just died. We tried to get it fixed/restored. After
some attempt at that we ended up moving to a new server and list server.
We are using MailMan for our new list server. The SmarterMail server we
were using for lists was about 4 years old. A lot has changed with mailing
list servers during those years. We should have taken the time to update
it sooner but we thought it was working just fine.

When the old mail server died it was without warning. We had to scramble
to fix it and after failed attempts we started researching and setting up a
new mailing list sever. There was no way to warn everyone that the list
was going to be moved to a new sever.

Here is a more technical explanation for those who care to know more
details.
===
Several mail providers have changed how they accept email. This caused a
lot of problems a couple years ago especially for mailing list servers and
the deliver-ability of email from a mailing list. We had no idea so many
people who had subscribed were not getting any emails form the old server.
We had some people complain the during last couple years and our support
team has worked hard to help get the mail working but many people simply
couldn't get email from our lists. We now believe that number is about 1/3
of all subscribers never saw any email even though they had subscribed to
the this mailing list. We had no idea that many had problems.

The new DMARC rules and the digital signature PKI encryption have pretty
much broken all mail servers. Mail Servers change email messages by adding
headers or maybe footers to a message. They may change the subject line to
add something like [LegacyUG]. Also the headers in the message that
contain the deliverable address gets modified by list servers. All of this
fiddling with an email is similar to what s p a m m e r s use. So, about
30% of all email providers won't allow emails form mailing lists through.
The newer version of MailMan software that we moved to works a lot better
but isn't perfect. It handles things better by trying to figure out the
rules an email provider requires and MailMan has options to help improve
the deliver-ability by follow those rules.

So, the problem isn't that we just took the liberty of adding a bunch of
people to a mailing list but rather over the last 3 or so years people have
subscribed and but never got a confirmation and never received any email
from the list. The list still had them as subscribers. I had backups of
all the lists that were only about 2 days before the server crashed. These
exact lists were imported to the new mailing list sever. Oh, what a relief
or so we thought. Then the problems started. We figure that about 1/3 of
everyone we just put on the new sever started getting emails for the first
time ever from the list. Whoa, what's all this email all of a sudden.
Then, as all of you have experienced the last couple days the
"panic/frustration" mail started. It was one of our users Wendy Howard who
is a moderator for several mailing lists over at RootsWeb (they use the
same MailMan software we do) sent me an email and after talking with her
discovered that we can turn on Emergency Moderation for a while which we
did yesterday. The Emergency Moderation will help so we can all get back
to actual Legacy questions and help. All of the non-Legacy related emails
can be worked on off-list by the moderators who can help people get
unsubscribed.

It will probably take a while for the thousands who are now getting any emails
for the first time ever to be assisted in getting unsubscribed. It's too
bad those people never got to experience what this list is really all
about. Users Helping Users. All of you are Awesome and there are so many
good people here who give of their time to help others. Thanks to all of
you.

We are working as hard as we can to keep everyone happy. Thank you for your
understanding and we hope this never happens again.

Thanks,
Ken McGinnis

Hi,

I have been able to change the sex of my husband pretty easily, but when I try
and do ancestry reports for our children it will only do the report of the
spouse in the Male (for two guys) or female (for two girls) spots. That happens
for all same sex couples in my reports. I know that this has been in the
pipeline for quite a long time because I brought it up almost a year and half

Work arounds are OK but a permanent fix would be fantastic.

The use of a word processor to amend final text is clearly far easier in my

RE: [LegacyUG] Digest

2015-06-01 Thread Ken Neundorf
Hi,

Today when I opened my legacy file I got the check to see if there is an update
message. It said I need a new update so I downloaded it. When it was done my
Legacy file was gone. I was able to find it and start it. The icon that is on
my desktop is plain white instead of the blue. In its place I had Legacy
Charting

What is happening here. Very disturbing.

I use that work around but when I make reports it will not connect the spouses
in both families. This is the only complaint I have about this program. I would
like to see you make the extensive changes.

Allowing same sex couples would require some fundamental and extensive changes
to Legacy and the add-on programs. There is a work around created by one of our
users, which requires the use of Access. Full details can be found at

2015-01-28 Thread Ken Neundorf
Is this something that will be changed? I have at least 50 couples in my
database. I can change to both to having the same sex by using access. It will
recognize the couple through one family but it will not recognize it in the
other. If I print my family tree it will recognize our marriage, but if I do my
husband's family it will not recognize it. This is important to me and my
family.

Re: [LegacyUG] Overcoming Destroyed or Missing Records - free webinar by Karen Clifford now online for limited time

2014-10-10 Thread Ken Veitch
Dear Geoff,

This is not a big issue but more an annoying aspect for those that live
outside the USA and often cannot (due to work) watch a Webinar live. As
such I normally watch the recorded video and if I find it worthwhile then I
will purchase the CD.

Recently I have been very busy at work with late nights however I remained
very keen to watch this Webinar by Karen Clifford. Last night I checked
Legacy and it advised me that this Webinar would be available till 10
October 2014.

The time here now in Canberra Australia is 19:55 Eastern Australian Time
Daylight Savings Time on 10 October 2014.

Rightly or wrongly I had assumed that the availability of this Webinar was
based on USA time zones so I programmed to watch it tonight after I got back
from work.

Lo-and-behold it is now not available to watch.

I would have thought that the Webinar would be available up until 23:59 on
10 October 2014 USA Eastern or Western time.

At this moment Washington DC is 15 hours behind, Los Angeles is 18 hours
behind Australia EADST so in my mind I had plenty of time to settle down
after work and watch the Webinar.

I now believe that when you state that this Webinar was available up to 10
October 2014 you actually mean that it is available up to 23:59 on 09
October 2014.

Is this correct? If so can you please be more precise when you intend to
take it down the free access.

Thank you.

Ken

The recording of today's webinar, "Overcoming Destroyed or Missing Records,"
by Karen Clifford is now online for free for a limited time at
www.FamilyTreeWebinars.com <http://www.familytreewebinars.com/> . A few
comments from our viewers:
* I have renewed hope with some sources I never thought about. Thank you.
* Karen Clifford is always one of my favorites. She is skilled, experienced,
precise and always very helpful. She is the Queen of Genealogy. I will
listen to this one again, so I can get even more the second time.
* Karen is excellent, speaker & presenter. Learned a lot that I had no idea
of. Thank you Legacy Family Tree Webinars and Karen Clifford for another
wonderful afternoon of learning.

Subject: Re: [LegacyUG] Access Database in Legacy

ok, well its a bit confusing here.

You first mention that you want to change the Private to Biological or Blank

But then you say its the Father Relationship and Mother Relationship that are
marked as Private.

These are not the same things.

When you look at the childrens settings (right click in the area where the
children are listed under the parents in a Family View screen)

That opens the childrens settings screen

Each Child can have a different "Child Status"

This field is what you could change to Blank or Biological if they are all set
to Private.

You dont need access to do that

First as always make a backup (and even better make a copy to test on first)

Go to VIEW>Master Lists> Child Status.

Than COMBINE your Private with a one of the other available (or blank)

This will GLOBALLY change all persons.

If when looking at the childrens settings the boxes next to Relationship to
Father or Relationship to mother are checked (flagged) as Private, then you
would need to use a SQL query to change them

UPDATE tblCR SET tblCR.CPDadPrivate = 0 WHERE tblCR.CPDadPrivate = 1

Then the same for the mother

UPDATE tblCR SET tblCR.CPMomPrivate = 0 WHERE tblCR.CPMomPrivate = 1

But again, this will change ALL persons.

If when Looking at the childrens settings and the drop down list contains
Private then you can change those the same way as Child Status

VIEW> Master Lists> Child Parent Relationship then combine or edit your
available types.

Hope that helps

Jay

Is it just the 'main' Parent Child' relationship is Private ?

or does each of "Father Relationship" and "Mother Relationship" marked as

(You can have the main relationship show as anything, and then each parent

Relationship = Step and have that flagged as private)

Re: [LegacyUG] Problem loading version 7.5 on new computer;

2014-06-28 Thread Ken
Cathy Pinner & Wendy Howard,

Thank you very much for your swift response to my posting. Working from
both responses I was able to install and load all my family history files to
the Deluxe version of Legacy 7.5 on the new computer. As I no longer had my
password for the Deluxe version of 7.5, I did as you suggested and installed
the Standard version using the correct password (Legacy7). I then deleted
the Legacy folder it created on the C: drive and replaced it immediately with
the similar folder containing all the program files and my backups which I had
copied in its entirety just over a week ago to an external drive. As you
indicated this converted the installed Standard version to the the Deluxe
version I had on the old computer.

Once again I thank you. Your help is greatly appreciated.

[LegacyUG] Problem loading version 7.5 on new computer

2014-06-27 Thread Ken
Hello all,

I’m having a problem loading the deluxe version of the Legacy 7.5 program
onto my new computer (operating system Windows 8.1). I made a backup of
the "full" Legacy folder which includes my backups in the Data Folder, the
usr extension files, Legacy setup exe files for version 6 and version
7.5.0.0, Legacy.exe application file 7.5.0.278, along with all the other
Legacy files that reside in that main Legacy folder. However, while I do
have a disk for version 6, I don't have a disk for version 7.5 nor do I have
a disk for version 7.The reason is, I purchased the Legacy version 6
disk from Global Genealogy on Nov 15, 2007, registered it at
http://www.legacyfamilytree.com/Register.asp and because version 7 was just
being marketed I was subsequently given a free upgrade to version 7 but I
never did receive a disk.

In an effort to establish the program on my new computer I extracted a copy
of Legacy7Setup.exe (file version 7.5.0.0) from my backup files and placed
it on the desktop of the new computer. When I double clicked on it I
received the welcome dialogue to Legacy 7.5 setup program and after
clicking next I was asked by the Legacy Installation Wizard to enter a
password which I believe is family.Unfortunately, having done that,
nothing happens (it freezes) so I'm at a loss as what to do. I still
have my invoice, disk and password for version 6 plus the letter advising me
of the free update to version 7 but I don't want to install version 6 on the
new computer, especially as Version 7.5.0.278 still works on the old one and
I want to transfer that program before I get rid of the old clunker.

Hope the above is clear and someone can resolve this issue for me.

Thanks in advance.

Ken Marlow, Ottawa

Re: [LegacyUG] Events - repeated or is once enough?

2013-03-12 Thread Ken McKinlay
One word of caution in terms of having a single Religion event and
assuming the person was that religion throughout their lives. Although
it is rare to have a Catholic to change to a Protestant based religion
(including Church of England) it was not unheard of. The same goes for a
Protestant changing to become a Catholic, although in that case there
will be some interesting documents concerning the renouncing of heresy
(especially pre-Vatican II days). Additionally, at least in parts of
Ontario and the Maritime provinces of Canada, Protestants could switch
religions depending on what schism had occurred or if there was a closer
church when they moved.

As with all events, a judgment call needs to be made for each person and
you need to watch out for assumptions.

Stuart,

There was a similar question asked very recently on the EE forum
(https://www.evidenceexplained.com/content/military-record-personal-copy) and
the recommendation was to use EE 3.25, "Basic Format, Family Artifacts"
since the document is a privately held item.

Thanks Ron for confirming the issue. I've logged a bug report on the
problem.

I know I can do an SQL query to solve it but I'm trying to avoid that
route since I prefer not going outside the application environment to
fix something that should work in the program.

[LegacyUG] Search and replace of extra carriage returns in Event-Notes

2012-06-27 Thread Ken McKinlay
Greetings,

Is there a way to do a search for extra carriage returns at the start or
end of an event note and replace them with nothing?

I'm using Legacy 7.5.0.191 and the "Search and Replace" menu function
(Ctrl+H) doesn't seem to find any text in the Event-Notes that have the
crlf code in them. I'm using the CR button on that screen to insert the
crlf code into the "Find what" text field.

I have been using Genota 4 and Genforms 2 as two research tools for a while
now. Both programs will link to your Legacy data files which is very handy.

Genforms 2 allows you to enter data from your Birth, Death & Marriage records
as well as many other types of official sources in a structured database that
can be searched. Very handy to see how often the same person (e.g. witnesses)
are noted on statutory documents.

Genota 4 allows you to enter your research notes for a specific person or even
a subject. You can also link repository details where sources are held, link
to scanned documents that are held on your computer and also establish links
other members of your Legacy family tree.

Recommend you take a look – trial versions are available.

While thinking of how to store documents that might not have a place in Legacy,
but will have a place when I, hopefully, put together a family history (such as
the history/customs of the place where they lived) I remembered reading about
these two programs that work with word processors. Zotero is a plugin that
works with firefox and Word or Open Office. It's a way to cut and paste and
save research in one place, from what I understand.

Does anyone use a tool like this for genealogy, or is it overkill? All these
extra files could be kept in the same directory/subdirectories where I keep the
media I have loaded, or will load into legacy.

I hope this isn't too off topic. For me, Legacy is a tool not just to store
information in, but hopefully one that will help me when I want to put all the
information into an interesting story/history.

[LegacyUG] Where have all the fonts gone?

2012-02-17 Thread Ken Carkeet
Greetings,

I have just updated to the latest built and have found to my horror that all of
my fonts have disappeared! I want to print out a family group sheet using the
Arial font, but when I went into the font tab to select the font that I wanted,
I discovered that all the fonts have disappeared, and not only that, none of
the font buttons work either.

Can anyone else confirm that this is a bug.

Thanks for reading my problem. Hope someone can help?

[LegacyUG] Help with Legacy on two computers

2011-09-01 Thread Beci and Ken
I recently bought a laptop and can not wrap my brain around how to keep my most
recent info on both computers.  For instance, I will work on my desktop adding
information to my Legacy file.  Then I need to work on my laptop.  How do I get
the most recent info on my laptop?  If I understand correctly a backup is only
for an emergency restoration. If what I need to do is "save the file as", then
how do I update whatever computer file I need to update?  Kindergarten
language, PLEASE
Thank you for any help you can offer.

RE: [LegacyUG] Research Logs

Hi everyone,

Maybe this might be a good subject for a future Webinar. 'How Legacy's To-Do
list, Research Log and Calendar will help you to keep track of your
genealogical research'

This would be great follow on to the forthcoming Karen Clifford Webinar
'Organising for Success'.

Just an idea!

Connie,

As part of section 3, Document Work, "submit a research plan (one page or
less) describing the first steps for continuing research to resolve the problem
defined in 3_c. {Standard 5}. You should

1) base the plan on clues found within the document and on sound research
methods, standard genealogical sources, and material specific to the area, time
period, and subject of this records; and

2) identify fully any publications, personnel, repositories, or records
(original, in print, or electronic) you would normal consult in following that
plan.

I really would like to use the Legacy research calendar because it really looks
nice but it is too spread out. I won't be able to get my 10 sources on one
page.

The BCG does not require submission of a Research Log as part of the
certification portfolio. Perhaps you are thinking of accreditation through
ICAPGen.

Although it won't look like a traditional research log, I concur with Sherri
that the To-Do feature is perfect for the purpose of a research log (and more).
There are myriad ways to format the reports to make it less "big and clunky."

For those who prefer the traditional format, however, try:

http://www.family-passages.com/Tools.html

These are "fillable" in Excel.

RE: [LegacyUG] Research Logs

2011-07-24 Thread Ken
Hi Sherry, David & Tim,

Tim's question is one that's dear to my heart.

What software is around nowadays that has the ability to note down your
genealogical research in a format similar to the standard paper note keeping
form such as the often referred to 'Research Record Sheet' or 'Correspondence
Record Sheet'?

At this time I have stumbled upon an old program titled 'Bygones' by Steve
Adair which was developed during the 1990s. Unfortunately, the last time it
was updated was in
1999. The software is available at http://www.bygonessoftware.com/ It seems
quite reasonable but we are talking about software programming and technology
that is now over twelve years old.

I'm sure that there must be more recent genealogical research software around
that enables us to enter research data and print out our research results in
the accepted Research & Correspondence Record Sheets.

As often is the case these days, I can type faster that I can write/print - and
I will admit that it is much neater as well. What's more, when you are using
the internet for research it’s a bonus just to be able to copy the information
and place it in a Genealogical Research program.

Appreciate any recommendations from yourselves or other members on the LUG.

Regards,

Ken

Re: [LegacyUG] Page numbering problem on Multiple Line of Descent Report

2011-05-16 Thread Ken
Thank you Evert, Laird Gene & Brian/Support for taking the time to assist me
with the
Table of Contents page numbering problem as outlined in my initial posting.
Although
Laird and Gene were unable to duplicate the situation it was reassuring to know
that Evert
and Brian at support was able to confirm there is a 'bug' in the program. As
Brian
stated it has been reported and I look forward to the fix.

Laird, as I noted in my initial posting the report I was producing was strictly
a Multiple
Line Descendant Report with a Title Page, Table of Contents, body of the
Report, Citations
and Index. The report was based on close to 30 Lines of descent and the
problem with the
page numbering of the Table of Contents appears whether the report was produced
as a stand
alone or within the Publishing Centre. The problem also occurred if I dropped
the Title
Page and the Index but as I previously indicated the Table of Contents pages
must exceed
two to note the page numbering problem. Like you I have the Deluxe Version of
Legacy but
unlike you mine is based on the latest build 7.5.0.77Perhaps that is where
the problem
lay. Anyway, as stated, Brian/Support has reported the problem.

Thanks again to all.

[LegacyUG] Page numbering problem on Multiple Line of Descent Report

2011-05-15 Thread Ken
Greetings,

Although the following appears to be a minor problem, I thought I should bring
it to the
group's attention to see if I am overlooking a solution. I note it has not
been listed
in the archives.

When producing a Multiple Line of Descendant Report within the Publishing
Centre or as a
stand alone, the Table of Contents are incorrectly numbered. The second page
and those
Table of Contents pages that follow are all automatically assigned a page
number as though
they were the last page of the whole report. In my case each page, 2 through
5, of the
Table of Contents were assigned page number 312. The last page of my full
report was
311.

As the Table of Contents falls at the beginning of the report I was surprised
to see it
numbered as though it fell at the end but realized the problem was more than
that when all
the Table of Contents pages, 2 through 5, carried the same incorrect number.
Have I
done something wrong or is this a bug?

If someone tries to duplicate this scenario please make sure your Table of
Contents is two
or more pages.I tried to see if this situation applied to any other type of
report but
my line doesn't go back far enough to have at least two pages of generations
noted in the
Table of Contents for the Ancestor or one name Descendant report.

I thank you for reading this and look forward to some guidance with regards to
the matter.

Ken Marlow, Ottawa

[LegacyUG] Name Tags not including pictures

2011-05-06 Thread Ken Carkeet
Greetings!
I have just downloaded the latest update and have tried to create some name
tags with individual pictures on them. In the process of doing so I have
discovered that Legacy won’t let me include individual pictures on my labels,
it will only allow me to include a common photo or logo instead. Am I doing
something wrong or is this a new bug? Can someone else reproduce this problem?

I am using Windows 7 and and the latest update.

RE: [LegacyUG] Genealogical Research & Record Keeping Software

2010-09-24 Thread Ken
Hi G.C.

Thanks for providing a vote of support for Clooz 2.1 . I'm at the stage now
that I want to decide between Clooz and Custodian and I was hoping that the
members of the LUG could provide me with some clear recommendation as to which
is the best program or recommend an alternate program.

So I'm throwing it out there for all the members of LUG to provide their views
before I commit. :-)

ken,
I have used Clooz for a number of years. It is easy to use "after a
little experience and time" and designed to handle all the other
"stuff" that may not fit nicely into a program like Legacy. I believe
it is exactly what you are looking for.

I have also been testing Custodian 3 but I find it’s a bit frustrating because

The final program I have been using is Genota 4 which links to Legacy. The

reference a person to different source documents.

Anyway, before venturing any further on this project it would be great to hear
the views of other members of the LUG.

Maybe there is another program out there that is compatible with Legacy 7 which
I don’t know about.

Ken.

[LegacyUG] Genealogical Research & Record Keeping Software

2010-09-23 Thread Ken
Hi everyone,

For a while now I have been struggling to find an appropriate software

link/cross reference a person to different source documents.

Anyway, before venturing any further on this project it would be great to
hear the views of other members of the LUG.

Maybe there is another program out there that is compatible with Legacy 7
which I don't know about.

Regards,

Ken.

Re: [LegacyUG] Picture Gallery

2010-09-20 Thread Ken
File Maintenance can't fix the problem since the Legacy program does not
know that there is a problem with the Picture Gallery. If the Picture
Gallery Window opens up for you, in the left hand column of the window, go
down to where it says "Zoom" - next to the word "Zoom' there is a + and -
sign. Click on the + (you may have to do it a number of times to get the
full 4 boxes in a row (where your pictures appear). All the other rows of
boxes will appear automatically once the first row of boxes show up. Then
you should be able to add photos, files, videos, etc., to the Picture
Gallery. Hope this works for you. Ken

[LegacyUG] Legacy removing leading commas from Descendant Narrative Report

2010-08-30 Thread Ken Carkeet

Greetings,

Legacy is removing my leading commas from Descendant Narrative Reports even
though I have deselected this option. It seems that this setting is not
working as I do not wish to remove leading commas from my report.

Can someone else confirm that this is happening to them as well as me?

Thank you for your attention to my request.

Sincerely yours,

Kenneth Carkeet

[LegacyUG] RE: Problem with fixed report narrative

2010-07-12 Thread Ken
Greetings,

Further to my postings of 11 July 2010 (see below), I want once again to thank
everyone
for their help. I followed *all* of the steps offered by Richard Schulthies
but
unfortunately it did not help. However, I received a direct email today from
Sherry
(Technical Support) offering an alternative method and that did provide a work
around
solution. For those interested, here is what Sherry said-

"Unfortunately, Legacy is seeing this as a preposition, which many people
wrongly enter in
their locations ("of", "in", "near", etc)

If you go to View > Master Lists > Locations and edit that to have a
non-breaking space
between Over and Stowey, Legacy will not read "over" as a preposition.

To enter a non-breaking space, delete the space between Over and Stowey then
[sic -
leaving the cursor between the two now joined words] hold down the Alt key
while entering
0160 using the numeric keypad. A space will show up between the two words and
the reports
will print out correctly. Don't forget to edit the Short Location also.

BTW, you can also use a non-breaking space when entering a two-part name such
as Mary
Jane, where the person goes by Mary Jane rather than just Mary."

I believe John S. Adams referred to this solution in his reply yesterday but
unfortunately
I wasn't sure as to what detailed steps were actually required.

Thanks again. The Over Stowey location now reads correctly in all the Book
Reports.

Subject: Problem with fixed report narrative

Greetings all,

I couldn't find any mention of this in the archives so thought I'd bring it to
your
attention. When I produce any of the Book Reports (Descendant, Descendant
Narrative,
Ancestor, Multiple Lines of Descent) the location Over Stowey is not treated
correctly any
of the fixed narratives within the report as you can see from the example
below. For some
reason the word Over is treated as an adjective or adverb rather than part of a
place name
and as such the first letter is not capitalized. In addition, the preposition
' in ' is
dropped prior to the place name. I don't know if other similar place names
cause this
problem but I can say there isn't one with Nether Stowey, Somerset.

As I say the problem only appears when running the Book Reports and it occurs
only with
the fixed narratives, not in the Notes as you can see in the example below.
The location
Over Stowey is okay in the Family Group Report and all of the charts.

EXAMPLE---

2. Elizabeth Slocombe (Sarah 1) was born before 21 Mar 1779 over Stowey,
Somerset,
England and was baptized 21 Mar 1779 over Stowey, Somerset, England.

Elizabeth married Aaron Bailey 27 Aug 1805 over Stowey, Somerset, England.

General Notes: Aaron Bailey appears as Aaron Bayley in the Over Stowey parish
baptism
records for his daughter Ann.

Children of Aaron Bailey and Elizabeth Slocombe:

  3 F i. Ann Bailey was born 26 May 1806 over Stowey,
Somerset, England
and was baptized 22 Jun 1806 over Stowey, Somerset, England.

Hope someone can duplicate this situation and provide me with a solution.

Thank you.

Hello once again,

I want to thank Jenny Benson, Richard Schulthies and CE Wood for their helpful

I'll do as suggested and report the situation as a Bug.

For what it's worth, I have not received any emails regarding my original

resolved.

Thanks again.

Subject: RE: [LegacyUG] squished pop up boxes

It seems that the code, to calculate the pop-up box size, is fixed on the
initialization of the Legacy application. But...
The programmers still need to add the code to recalculate the popup size on
resizing of the legacy application window.

What follows is a write up that I did for Millennia on this issue. [Note: If
you do these steps on the Pedigree tab, the popup row recalculation is preformed
on resize of the application window.]

===CUT

There seems to be some evidence that the popup issue is more pronounced on the
larger (higher resolution screens) My screen runs at a resolution of 1920x1200.
Since the trend will be towards screens with higher pixel counts, this problem
will just get more notice.

You might be able to experience the issue but in reverse.
Try this
- Open Legacy and size the application window to one-half the height of the
screen Size
- Click on the pedigree tab; then the Family tab
- (Presuming that popups are enabled) Hover on an entry and when the popup
appears make a note of the overall height of popup and the harmonious size of
the font used to fill each row. The height of the text in the popup is likely
to match the height of the text in the field you are hovering over.
- Grab a top or bottom edge of the Legacy Application window and REDUCE the
height of the overall application to one-quarter or one-fifth of the screen
size. (It may be that the text in legacy window becomes unreadable… which is
okay for this demonstration.)
- Again, Hover on an entry and when the popup appears make a note of the
overall height of popup. On my system, the height of the popup is not
recalculated on screen resize. The height of the text in the popup is likely to
match the height of the text in the field you are hovering over, but because the
popup has not been resized, the text may appear to have ample space above and
below each line. On my system, it looks like the text is separated by three to
four blank lines in the popup. If you have made the window short enough….
The
popup may extend into the footer of the application window and you will not be
able to see the “Death” and “Marriage” lines of the popup.
- Click on Pedigree Tab; then on the Family Tab
- On my system, this causes the popup height to be recalculated. The popup now
comfortably holds the five lines of information and looks double spaced.
- Now, Grab a top or bottom edge of the Legacy Application window and INCREASE
the height of the overall application to nine-tenths of the screen size. (It may
be that the text in legacy window becomes wrapped… which is okay for this
demonstration.)
- WITHOUT clicking on the Pedigree Tab, hover over an item and make a note the
text on the popup.
