we have the same problem with St Louis city versus St Louis County.  I
always list the city which is NOT part of the county as"

St.Louis City (independent city), , Missouri, USA

Hi Margaret,

I live in Virginia.   Virginia is strange in that it is a
Commonwealth.    Therefore our cities are not in counties.   All are
very separate jurisdictions.  I live in the City of Richmond yet it is
not in a county.   Prior I lived in Henrico County which is a totally
separate government.

Another example, the Town of Ashland is physically located in Hanover
County but you would _not_ list it as Ashland, Hanover County.   I
would suggest “Town of Ashland” as that is what it is referred to
locally.

Hope this helps!

The state of Virginia has a good number of 'Independent Cities'.
Would someone please tell me how to properly record them?

Thanks

Re: [LegacyUG] Surname Changed When Immigrated

the so called ledgers were the ships manifests - those were done at the
port of departure.

Here are a few good articles to let you know what really happened

Marie,

I would disagree with that first statement.  In my years of doing
research, I have heard stories where the workers at Ellis Island
entered names into the ledgers incorrectly.  If they were unable to
discern the name from the ships manifest, they would of write down the
names as THEY understood the passengers.  I have examples in my own
family where a Braun from Prussia was listed as Brown because the
person at intake determined that the immigrant should "Americanize"
their name.

As for the second part of your statement...I agree.  I do believe that
the AKA field i the best place to notate that.

First, the name was not changed at Ellis Island. The manifests were

they just started to use the new spelling.

I'm using Legacy 8 and there is an AKA (4th logo from the right) it
looks like a group of people. You can add the name that they used in
Italy or the one used in the US, your choice. You can cite the source
(census, birth record, marriage record, etc) for each individual time
you find the name. Then use the other name in database.

Re: [LegacyUG] Surname Changed When Immigrated

2019-11-23 Thread Laura Johnson
First - names were NOT changed at Ellis Island.  The names on the
manifests were from the port of departure.  So if it was written as
VAllevieni on the manifest, it is because it was written that way on the
manifest.

Second, I always record the birth/baptismal name as the correct names.
All other names are then AKA's or Alias names and I document those name
changes for where I found them

[LegacyUG] Birth date of Child 2 is before birth date of Child 1

2014-01-04 Thread Laura Johnson
I have this potential problem on one of the children in a family.
The children are:

Anna Corso born 26 Apr 1835
Agostino Luciano Corso born 13 Dec 1837, died 2 Jan 1839

The problem (red circle with exclamation point) is on Anna. They are
sorted correctly and she was born over a year after her parents
marriage. When you click to see what the problem is it states the
second child (Agostino)'s birthdate is before Anna's which is NOT true.

When you go into Anna's Individual Information and then click on the
problem, the window pops up to say that there is no potential problem
for this individual.

I have closed and restarted Legacy and the problem still exists
Has anyone else had this problem? Does anyone know how to correct it?

individuals to tag. I already have tagged all individuals in the
database and have been working my way through cleaning those up.

There are 54,833 individuals and 17090 marriages. The results of the
trial run for this created a list of 52,601. But if you look at the
list, I would be re-tagging several thousand people that I had already
cleared the tag on as my search list for the tag I was doing shows that
I still have 49,654 still to go from my original tagging.

First, let me tell you what I have been doing. I have been entering all
of the births, marriages and deaths from 1820 through 1910 from the
microfilmed records from a town in Sicily. I also have an online
database for this town as well that is fully searchable. I had been a
loyal user of FTM from the early 1990's and had beta tested for them for
years. After beta testing their 2008 and 2009 versions, it was evident
that Ver 16 was going to be the last version I would use due to the
changes they had made to the program. The newer versions cannot handle
my file and scramble the details on sources when they are imported via
gedcom from Ver 16 to FTM 2008, etc.

I switched to Legacy on the advise of a friend who had been using it for
years. It was far superior to what FTM had in any version that I had
used. So I bought the deluxe version and have been using it ever since.

But in bringing my files over to Legacy, I noticed that I needed to do
cleanup on the way I had been doing things before I started using Legacy
and even after I first started using Legacy because I found other
options or ways of doing things that were far superior in Legacy and I
need to cleanup and redo things that were not done that way in the past.

About a year ago, I tagged all individuals in the database with Tag #5.
The description for this tag is: FTM Cleanup Needed. I also have tag 2
and tag 3. These tags designate my paternal great-grandfather's family
(#2) and my maternal great-grandmother's family (#3). This way I can
easily see if a person is included in my ancestral lines or is just
someone from the town.

I have been working my way through the tag #5 as I enter more data in
the file and cleaning them up as I go. But it would be easier if I
could see that the marriage tag was cleared because then I would know
that I had already changed or fixed any problems with the children and
descendants of that line. I wouldn't need to choose each of the
children one by one to confirm whether they were done or not.

My thoughts were originally to use the marriage list to tag so that I
could work through all of the marriage list. I would select the first
marriage on the search list, correct both the wife and husband and any
children they had and remove the tag numbers for both the marriages and
the individuals as I went for that marriage. Then once I had worked
through all of the marriages, I could then do a final search to find any
unlinked individuals

[LegacyUG] Tagging Marriages

2013-10-25 Thread Laura Johnson
Is there a way to tag ALL marriages in the database? I can see how to
do it with individuals and I already have done that but I would like to
tag all of the marriages so that I can work through them to correct
problems that were in FTM before I converted the file to Legacy. As I
correct them, I remove the tag from the individuals but I would like to
do the same thing with all of the marriages as well

Re: [LegacyUG] Preferred Spouse

2013-08-18 Thread Laura Johnson
#1 response - you need to set that bookmark to you and your third wife.
Delete the one you have, then go to your third wife with you and save
it as your bookmark
I have my third relationship set as preferred and when I click the
bookmark it always goes to that one.

Re: [LegacyUG] Computer crashed - how do I move legacy to new computer?

2013-03-26 Thread Laura Johnson
I do two different backup scenarios. I feel more comfortable with what
I am doing as I also run 2 major websites and I have countless hours
invested in those and all of their projects, databases, pictures, etc

The first scenario takes 2 external hard drives. On the first Friday of
every month, I ghost copy my external drive to a different external
drive. Then on that Saturday morning, I go to the safe deposit box and
put it in and remove the one from the previous month.

The second scenario is that I have two 32 gig thumb drives. I have all
major files backed up to them. If any major changes are made to these
file, I immediately back up to these thumb drives as well as well as to
my external drive. I carry these thumb drives with me - one in my purse
and one on my keychain.

Re: [LegacyUG] Flip-Pal

2012-10-13 Thread Laura Johnson
so far, I haven't had any documents that were wider than the wand. I did
try an experiment in which I scanned a wall chart that was 3 times wider
than the wand's width. Scanned it in 3 sections and used my photo
program to put the three scans together. Using a friend's Flip-Pal, it
took 21 scans to get the whole chart scanned and the stitching didn't
work - you could see where every scan was stitched to the others.

think of it this way - with the flip-pal, you can only scan about 1/3 to
1/2 of a regular 8x11 paper at the most. I can do that same 8x11 in one
scan. No need to keep stitching images together to get the whole thing.

you don't need to stitch them together. You scan the length of the

Re: [LegacyUG] Trellis Chart

2012-09-10 Thread Laura Johnson
GeneaQuilts uses a gedcom file to form their chart
Progeny's version is in their Charting Companion. I ordered the
Charting Companion for Legacy. You can order it for several programs
like FTM as well). When I open the program, it automatically searched
for my Legacy files, and created a list of the files available. Then I
chose the file I wanted and then it created the chart from that file
which was not a gedcom file.

IF your family file is small and everyone is connected to one another,
it works fine. I exported only one of my direct lines to a smaller file
(roughly 900 people descended from one person). It created the file ok
without a lot of problems or waiting. Still, the more generations there
are, the more confusing the Trellis becomes. With 14 generations it was
almost impossible to follow it.

Using my full file for the one location study in Termini (58000+
people), there are too many families that are NOT connected to others.
It tries inserting these families wherever it can and they do not really
fit. 4 generations was an astronomically large number of pages and I
once it went past the first generation, I couldn't see a full generation
on the monitor at one time on a 22" monitor.

Re: [LegacyUG] Trellis Chart

2012-09-09 Thread Laura Johnson
It was not in my version 3 but is in Version 4. I just downloaded the
new upgrade and tried it. With a little over 58000+ names in my file,
the chart is projected to be 178 pages wide by 798 pages long for the
all inclusive. I tried to just do a Trellis for one person (my
great-grandfather) in my family but it seems to include all of the
relatives of that one person. I told it to only do 4 generations.
Definitely not a chart print for me. More than a couple of generations
and it is hard to read.

[LegacyUG] Descendant Report - Statistics

2012-09-02 Thread Laura Johnson
I have a friend who is wanting to see if the following can be done. I
have not been able to figure it out for him.
He is using a descendant report which is 14 generations and about 1500+
people.

His questions are:
1. Is there a way to find the oldest person in a specific generation
such as Gen 4 or Gen 7
2. Is there a way to find the youngest person in a specific generation
3. Is there a way to determine how many individuals there are in a
specific generation?

If it can't be done with a descendant report - is there any report, etc
that can achieve this?

thanks
Laura

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy/Families/iPad/Spreadsheet Help

2012-08-17 Thread Laura Johnson
Thanks for everyone's help.

First I used DropBox to get it available for the iPad.
Next I purchased QuickOffice ProHD and was able to successfully open the
file.
Although the file is very slow to open due to the size, I can at least
view it and work with it in Families for entry if I want or be able to
search the file if I need to.

I also tried Malcolm's other solution and attached the file to Families
and it worked great there as well

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy/Families/iPad/Spreadsheet Help

2012-08-16 Thread Laura Johnson
I guess it is confusing.
The Excel file contains over 20 sheets which contain over 155000
documents which have been transcribed and is fully searchable and sortable.
I enter these records one line at a time into the Legacy file (or
hopefully I will be able to do this with Families when I am traveling).
My problem is getting an application for the iPad which will read the
Excel file.

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy/Families/iPad/Spreadsheet Help

2012-08-16 Thread Laura Johnson
First, I would need to copy it into about 10 separate files to get OOo
to work with the file.
Secondly, I don't need any help with Families. That works great and I
can enter all I want and sync back when I get back home. I just need
something that will convert the excel file to a spreadsheet application
on the iPad so that I can view the spreadsheet file.

[LegacyUG] Legacy/Families/iPad/Spreadsheet Help

2012-08-16 Thread Laura Johnson
This is slightly offlist. You can fee free to contact me offlist
regarding any solutions you can see.

I have Legacy Deluxe and use Families to use the Legacy file on my iPad
and it works great.

my problem is that I also use an Excel file as a companion to my Legacy
file. It contains a complete database of all of the records I have
transcribed for a place in Sicily (91 years of births, marriages and
deaths - over 155,000 records so far). I am in the process of entering
these records into Legacy (slowly). I would love to bring this
spreadsheet file over to the iPad as well but can't seem to find a
conversion program on the iPad that will work. I found one
(iSpreadsheet) that said it would work with Excel files but it uses
Google Docs/Google Drive and Google Drive can't handle the size of the
Excel file. Don't even suggest OpenOffice as OO cannot handle the Excel
file in a windows environment (it is too slow).

So what I need is a way to Convert the Excel file into a spreadsheet on
the iPad so that I can work to enter the documents Families while I am
traveling

I would be very wary of putting anything on a Wordpress site. Wordpress
is a prime target for hackers as it is easily hacked into. I just had
one of my sites hijacked back in February and I am still cleaning up
messes from that.

I think I'd be more inclined to deposit files in a private area of one
of my domains - so long as I could remember the URL, of course! :)) I
also have a couple of Wordpress sites.

Leonard,

I am a previous user of FTM16 (and still do a gedcom backwards to the
program for various charts, etc that Legacy does not do). My sources
transferred correctly without any problems. All fields of the source
transferred correctly to Legacy from the FTM16 gedcom. Did you use the
following gedcom options when exporting the file?
Destination:FTW
Gedcom: 5.5
Character set: Ansi
Abbreviated tags check marked

Re: [LegacyUG] Invisible Embedded Dates ??

2011-09-10 Thread Laura Johnson
could these be the date that the person was last modified? Look at the
very bottom of the Legacy window to the right corner and see if you date
corresponds with that date. If you hover your mouse over the date, it
will ask you to click to see the modification dates.

There are people working on a solution to this problem. Check out the

DESCRIPTION : The organizers of BetterGEDCOM are members of the genealogy user

define a standard that is meant to replace the current GEDCOM standard for both

Re: [LegacyUG] New Update

2011-07-20 Thread Laura Johnson
I have problems with my eyesight as well. I have work tri-focals for
over 35 years now. I agree that there is a need for those who have
problems but to make them jump that far and require a complete
repositioning of the mouse in order to click on them makes it actually
more difficult and definitely more time consuming. I work within my
Legacy file for at least 3 -4 hours per day and work a full time job. I
can't afford to lose time over icons that move out of they way whenever
you try to access them. If there is such a great need for the jumping
icons, them it maybe should be an option for those that want them. I
definitely don't.

I would love to see them highlight but I am glad they do not "dance"
anymore. In my case they didn't dance at all. When I put the mouse on
them, they physically 'jumped' about 3/8" away and I had to move the
mouse over to them to be able to click on them. It was a wasted couple

Re: [LegacyUG] restore from merge backup

2011-04-16 Thread Laura Johnson
This screen comes up after click CLOSE to close the Merge window. The
next window that pops up is called MERGE COMPLETE. At the bottom of
that window is a box to check to show this window at the end of every
merge. Possibly you have unchecked this sometime in the past and that
is why you are not seeing the window now. Maybe support can tell you
how to undo that setting
For example, I just merged one of my people in my file and the window
states:

"The merge process is complete. You should examine your Family File to
make sure the Merge was successful and complete.
Note:
You can Undo all the merge changes by choosing
'Undo Merge of (4/16/2011 11:25:54 AM)' from the Edit menu."

Re: [LegacyUG] It's official - Legacy 7.5 is now available

2011-01-18 Thread Laura Johnson
that may be what they are telling you is happening but it is NOT what is
actually happening. They are NOT being transcribed twice and no one
appears to be arbitrating any differences. They are not using people
who KNOW the handwriting and the language to transcribe and arbitrate,
so they are so full of mistakes. When it became available, I started
checking records against those that a group of us had already
transcribed and OVER 90% were incorrectly transcribed. I was told that
they would eventually correct the problems and that I could submit
corrections BUT ONLY ONE DOCUMENT PER EMAIL. Well when you have 50
entries per page and NOT ONE was totally correct, it would take too long
to send in all of the corrections necessary to correct just the first
page of entries. Instead they kept trying to get me to transcribe for them

several hundred would be a breeze compared to mine - I have more than
25,000 sources under 12 master sources that would need to be converted

to continue using the basic sources so that all remain uniform as they

[LegacyUG] LTools - Fixing Source Details

2010-08-10 Thread Laura Johnson
I am not sure exactly how to ask this question so I am going to give as
much info as possible.

I have been researching one town in Sicily for about 35+ years. I have
been transcribing all of the LDS filmed documents for that town for over
12 years now and have been slowly entering them into Legacy. I
originally started this file in FTM in 2001 and have entered over 25,000
documents so far. When FTM 2008 could not handle the file and was too
slow to use, I started experimenting with Legacy and by the time FTM
2009 came out and it wasn't any easier to use and still had the same
problems with the file, I switched entirely to Legacy.

When I started out, I setup exactly how I wanted the Master sources in
the Basic source writer and have stuck to those as those are the only
types of documents available for the time period of the documents. So
for example, my Master Source is called: 01 - Nascite - LDS Filmed
Document and I setup the detail regarding type of source, repository,
etc the way I wanted it to read.

When I entered the "Source Details", I entered them as follows:
"Film #2014483, Document #57" or "Film #1688171, Document #446"
This is fine EXCEPT that most of the films contain documents from many
years (Film #2014483 contains the years of 1885 thru 1910) so there will
be 25 marriage sources that contain the same source details but they are
NOT the same document but because they are documents from different years.

What I would like to know is if there is a way search and find all
individuals who have Film #2014483 in their source details and be able
to edit it to include the year in the source details so that it would
read for example: Film #2014483, Year 1890, Document #19.

Can I do this from within Legacy itself or would it be easier in
LTools? I have the free download but am willing to go to the deluxe
version if it can facilitate this much faster? I have not really
experimented with LTools yet as I really didn't need any of the options
that were available in the free download on the file.

I am open to all suggestions on how to proceed.

I do it all the time. I click the parent area and then add new. Then
click ok
Then I add the child and go up to the parent and backout the surname..
Works everytime for me

when that happens, all you need to do is to delete the surname in the

I have the same problem with my own marriage. We were married 2 years

I create an event called Church Marriage Ceremony in the marriage events

Re: [LegacyUG] Surname Case Problem

2010-04-20 Thread Laura Johnson
The asterisk does show when you select the Children's setting BUT
..I DON"T want to have to do that in order to see which child is
the preferred child which in my case is my direct ancestor.

Times New Roman - I can't see the difference in bold there either. I
thought that maybe this has a lot to do with the fact that I only use
legacy in the upper half of my screen and am typing from the excel files
in the bottom half but I just tried Legacy full screen and it is the
same way - still cannot distinguish the BOLD or the asterisk after the
child's name. I am running Legacy with the latest update.

So, I decided to see if it was just this computer or if I could
replicate it on my laptop. Both Legacy programs have exactly the same
settings. The only difference is that the laptop is Vista Professional
64-bit. The computer is XP Essential for Business. Both screens look
exactly alike and I cannot see the bold or asterisk.

So I did another experiment. I unchecked to show the asterisk. Closed
Legacy then reopened it. The asterisk now appears.

So I thought maybe if that worked, I would try fixing the bold - I
unchecked show direct ancestor in bold, closed Legacy and restarted -
but that didn't make it appear any bolder than the other children.

Re: [LegacyUG] Surname Case Problem

2010-04-20 Thread Laura Johnson
Wendy

1. I already have the relationships set to appear with me as the
starting point
2. I already have it set to show direct line in BOLD - not able to see
any difference
3. I already have each direct ancestor appear as the preferred child -
can't see any asterisk next to the name

So even though I can see the relationships, I CANNOT tell which child is
the direct descendant because they do NOT appear as bold nor do I see
the asterisk

So the ALL CAPS on the direct ancestor is the only thing that appears to
make it stand out

Actually, that is already checked and it won't let you type a surname in

Re: [LegacyUG] Surname Case Problem

2010-04-19 Thread Laura Johnson
is there any way to all CAPS on some instances of a surname and on
others, just regular? In FTM, I had my direct line in ALL CAPS. All
others with the same surname were typed regularly.

For example, Saverio Sansone was my great-grandfather and his name was
SAVERIO SANSONE.
Saverio's brother was Agostino Sansone and it appeared with mixed.

Re: [LegacyUG] Twin, Stillborn, Etc

2010-04-13 Thread Laura Johnson
They are already listed in the Status box. They do NOT appear next to
the child's name when you go back to the listing of the children for
that family like they did before.

[LegacyUG] Twin, Stillborn, Etc

2010-04-13 Thread Laura Johnson
My friend recently updated to the latest version but I did not because I
am working on a project that I want to complete first but...

Once my friend updated, she when she chooses Twin, Stillborn, etc from
the children's settings, it no longer appears after the name of the
child anymore. It still does in my version.

Can anyone tell me what she needs to do to fix this?

it also makes it stand out in reports and works very well especially if
you are sending the reports to individuals asking them to help fill in
the missing data.

2010-01-14 Thread Laura Johnson
my file is 48000+ individuals. Legacy runs smoothly and very quickly.
This was the main reason I switched from FTM 2009 to Legacy. FTM
couldn't handle my file.

I am transcribing a complete town in Sicily's records and am not even
20% finished at this point

Re: [LegacyUG] Newbie Introduction

2009-12-21 Thread Laura Johnson
Angelique

I am the opposite of you. I have used FTM since version 2.0 when it was
dos based. I beta tested versions 9 through 2008. I HATE the new
interface, don't find it very intuitive, takes too long to move between
screens and takes much longer to add one source to a person. FTM 2010
still has not finished removing all of the bugs on the new interface
regarding large files (mine is over 48,000 people) which makes it
extremely slow and unresponsive at times.

I had been experimenting with Legacy for about 3 years and finally make
the switch totally to Legacy after the new FTM 2010 still did not
address all of the problems. It will take FTM years to get up to the
speed of Version 2006/Ver 16 which is still years behind what Legacy has
to offer.
