Where did these entries come from? There must be a reason why they are in

Personally I would happily pay to have mapping reinstated. But no-one has

Have I missed something? Has Millennia said mapping is dead due to cost?

Re: [LegacyUG] Master Event Address List

2019-01-03 Thread Mary Young
Alas, mapping is broken for everyone, not just v. 9. I spent 100s of hours
pinpointing on the map, and got great benefit and pleasure from tracking
family connections in a large city. Now all lost, its a great sadness. Any
new additions to the program don't make up for this loss of function. I
despair it will ever be fixed.

Re: [LegacyUG] Mapping feature

2018-02-04 Thread Mary Young
My situation exactly. I have spent untold hours mapping my locations to
exact addresses. All that work now feels wasted, and I can't progress this
project.

Maps are top priority for me also. My research is highly dependent on
place-names, so I've done little in Legacy since mapping broke.

Re: [LegacyUG] Report Query

2017-11-03 Thread Mary Young
I put the full address, including the street number, in the Location field.
Put a comma after the number. Thus
2, Main Street, Any town, etc. etc.
Then tick the box to reverse sort the Master Location List. You can see
immediately who lived at that exact address.
N.B. You can use up to 9 fields. not limited to the conventional 4.

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy 8 - date change after latest update

2017-09-28 Thread Mary Young
Personally I've never used Est, I prefer Abt. But whatever we use, it
shouldn't be changed to Cir without our knowledge. Recently some of my
dates (but not all) are being changed to Cir. And someone told me, it must
be because I originally used it. If so, it must be 15 years and several
programs ago! I have spent hours trying to fathom it out, to no avail. So
my Reports are now sloppily scattered with Abt and Cir, leaving the reader
wondering what's the difference.

[LegacyUG] Legacy 8 Final Build

2017-07-29 Thread Mary Young
Having updated Legacy 8 with the June 8 2017 "final build", I was
surprised, on opening Legacy today, to see a notification "An UPDATE for
Legacy is available. Build Date: Jun 13, 2017". [capitals are mine]
When I click on "See What's New" there's no list of amendments and
corrections to Legacy 8.

The Page is headed Legacy 8.0 Revision History, Current Version i 9.0.0.189
Build Date of: 13 June 2017.
8 June 2017 - Version 8.0.0.603 - Build . THE END. Final Build of Legacy
8.0.

Now I'm totally confused. Was there a later, final final version of Legacy
8, issued 13 June. Or Is 9.0.0.189 actually Legacy 9. Is this an UPDATE
to version 8. Or an UPGRADE to Version 9?. And if I click on the Install
button for June 13, 2017, would I be installing Version 9? Which I don't
want to do.

Re: [LegacyUG] Printed Reports sometimes substitute "Cir" for "Abt" in date fields

2017-06-13 Thread Mary Young
Thanks, but I had looked at 5.7 Prefixes (gbl) but don't believe i explains
this.
One of the options in 5.7 is Typed: Circa, Cir, C.Displayed: Abt.
But I *never* type "Cir". I type "Abt", the screen displays "Abt". Then
the printed report has "Cir" (but only for some individuals, not all).
Still puzzled!

[LegacyUG] Printed Reports sometimes substitute "Cir" for "Abt" in date fields

I'm using Legacy 8, final update.
When creating Individual Charts, my input of "Abt" is being changed on the
printed Reports to "Cir" (which I never use).
I have printouts from last October which show the same behaviour, for the
same people.
I've been through Options>Customise but found nothing relevant.

And pretty much all mailing lists in general. The kicker is -- most of the

[LegacyUG] Creating Web Pages

2016-12-05 Thread Mary Young
How do I change the destination before generating one of my Legacy web
sites? Currently they are set to a practice site at
C:/users/documents/legacy family tree/web/my legacy website.

I haven't updated this particular site for a long time, but my recollection
is that I could change the destination ... rather than generating the files
and then copying to the appropriate folder on my hard drive.

(Apologies for the forward slashes, but I don't have a backslash on this
keyboard.)

[LegacyUG] Missing Media File

2016-12-05 Thread Mary Young
When I back up my media files, I get a "missing file" message. I know this
file no longer exists! It was a .doc containing a funeral oration, which I
decided to incorporate into a Source, and then deleted the document.

The Help File says

*Testing the Locations*

If you would like to test all the picture links within your family file,
click the *Test All Media Folders* button. Legacy tests to see if each
media file exists. If a file cannot be found within the current list of
folders, *you are given the opportunity to find it yourself or to delete
the reference*.

All I get is "View File? 1 media files is missing would you like to view
the Missing Media List in your text editor?"
Whether I answer Yes or No, there's no opportunity to delete the reference.

Thanks

Crystal,

With any automatic mapping, you have to check the location. You can shift

I check all mapping and mark the verified column in the Master Location

I'm just amazed at how often the Bing map in Legacy is right for little
Australian towns/localities.

Tools are an aid, not perfect. Google maps aren't perfect either. Neither
Google nor Bing will find historical place names. Other research again is
needed.

Perhaps I'm older than most of the complainers.

I have an issue with the maps. It shows some of my family, like my dad for
example living in places I know he never lived. In one particular instance
I thought maybe I put a census source in for my dad that actually was a
source for a different Ed Emory. But I checked and I had the correct
Franklin County, Pa.

Confusing for me. A committed Google lover.

Ah, another ā€˜use Google maps, not Bing mapsā€™ discussion. The last time I
noted such a discussion was just over three years ago by a large part of
the group that was supposed to be beta testing FTM 2014. I stayed out of
that dispute (the group never received a response from the development
staff), yet do have a couple of questions I will throw out for a little
thought during this discussion.

I worked in the development end of the software industry for nearly 30
years between retiring from the military and retiring the second time. So,
I tend to look at the various genealogy software available from year to
year, even having corresponded or spoken directly to some of the developers
through the decades. In all that time I do not remember any genealogy
software using Google maps over Bing maps since map graphics became an
integrated part of the software.

Why do software developers use Bing and not Google map integration? Is
Google map integration available for in consumer, ā€˜off-the-shelfā€™ software
products? What are the cost differences between using Google Vs. Bing for
development tools and for licensing costs (probably per number of released
copies, by volume level)?

Since no genealogy software seems to use an integration with Google maps,
there must be a reason.

Denise

If you pin the location on Google Earth, the pin shows the coordinates as

I've been requesting a switch to Google Maps, or at least user choice, for

Re: [LegacyUG] Trying to update Spouses

2016-07-23 Thread Mary Young
I would be interested to know why you'd want to do this. A woman's maiden
name IS her name. Husbands can come and go but she is still her own person.
How can you trace her ancestry except by her family name?

[LegacyUG] Relationship Calculator - strange result

2016-06-03 Thread Mary Young
I ran the Relationship Calculator for myself and a 3rd cousin. With myself
on the left, the Report shows our Common Ancestors (2nd-gr-grandparents)
and Relationship: 3rd cousin.
However, when I Swap Left and Right (i.e. with myself on the right) there
is a second line, with Common Ancestors "Not Related", and Relationship:
"Not Related".
How can Third Cousins also be "Not Related"?

Re: [LegacyUG] Creating a web site

2016-06-02 Thread Mary Young
Gary
Why should you 'get in trouble' for posting you query, it's very relevant.
I would advise playing around with creating a Legacy website. If you like
the results, then look for a hosting site. Maybe your ISP provides space as
part of your package. There are also free sites available, or you can pay a
monthly fee.
If the Legacy style doesn't appeal, then your data can be exported to
gedcom and "translated" into one of the on-line programs, e.g. TNG which
has been mentioned.
Personally, I let Legacy create my online family trees, they are integrated
into my website cmy.org.uk (links on the right). I can't advise on
commercial hosts, being fortunate to use a relative's surplus space.
Whatever you do, enjoy the process!
Mary Young
Can you post your findings to the group? I'm interested in this as well.

I had a site on Freepages, which is a part of RootsWeb/Ancestry.com. But I
took my pages down because their Acceptable Use Policy indirectly states
that a just person's name (no DOB, no Place of Birth) is considered private
information and can not be posted for living persons.

It's fine for a free site and there are plenty of genealogy pages there.

Why do you say "it is good computing to move your personal data off the C:\

Re: [LegacyUG] Customize wording?

2015-08-22 Thread Mary Young
Yes, and a person can have many relationships and no children.
When I originally questioned the use of "Never married and had no children"
I was told that, in this context, a marriage was any relationship which
resulted in children.
They (I forget who on Legacy staff) could not see or would not admit this
makes a nonsense of "This couple never married" where clearly there is a
relationship without a formal marriage.

Years ago, some users (myself included) "complained" about "Never Married
and Had No Children". because (a) interpretation of "married" varies
between users, and (b) these two statements can conflict, and should be in
two separate fields.
But alas no-one took notice of *those* complaints!!
I agree with Pam - Legacy have changed the meaning of this long-established
field, without any user consultation, and without any option to use the
previous wording.Only making a bad situation worse.

[LegacyUG] Source Clipboard - Prompt for Detail

2015-06-13 Thread Mary Young
Recently, whenever I click the "-" to add a Basic Source, the Detail Box
pops up.
But my Customise 7.4 Source Clipboard - Prompt For Detail (ff) is ticked
"Default to OFF".
This started a week or two ago ... may with the last update but one.
I don't need this pop-up for Detail, so it's very distracting. Is there
another Option somewere to change this behaviour?

Re: [LegacyUG] Location of Timeline files

Hi Brian
You say:
>Go to the Chronology Report, ... is this the one from
>the chronology tab or a Chronology page in a Family Group or
> Individual report.
I'm using the Chronology Tab.

>When you get the error click OK or whatever button is there to
>dismiss that screen.
Yes, click OK to dismiss that screen. The chronology then loads as expected
without timelines.

>Use Select timelines to select the Scotland Census timeline from the
>Legacy 8 timelines folders.
I can't find an option for "Select Timelines".
In View>Timelines>English I have ticked "Scotland - Census".
But still getting the error message re timeline file not found at
C:\Legacy\TimeLines\English\Scotland - Census.txt
>When you view timelines the ones you see are from your
>My Documents\Legacy Family Tree\_AppData\Timeslines\ folders.
>There is no "setting" you can change to look in other folders.

BUT according to the error message, Legacy 8 is looking for the files in
 *C:\Legacy\TimeLines\English\Scotland - Census.txt.*
(where my Timeline files resided in Legacy 7.5).
This is why I asked how to change path for the Timeline files.

Perplexed!

[LegacyUG] Location of Timeline files

2015-05-03 Thread Mary Young
Where can I set location for the Timeline files?
View>Timelines gives me a list of the Timeline files.
But the Chronology Report is looking for my old 7.5 folder (which no longer
exists).

"The timeline file you are trying to open

C:\Legacy\TimeLines\English\Scotland - Census.text cannot be found."

Legacy 8 Help says:

Note: The timeline files are located in

[My Documents]\Legacy Family Tree\_AppData\Timeslines\[Language]. [My
Documents] is the path to the My Documents folder on your computer and
[Language] is the timeline language you have selected.

They seem to be also in
Computer>Windows (C:)>Program Files (x86)>Legac8>AppData>Timelines>English.

I've scanned Customise options but can't find how to re-set the Timeline
files location.

Thanks,

Hi Brian
Thanks for the explanation. But I am still confused. You said "There has
been no new update to Legacy since my email of 2 Apr".
But my "About Legacy" says Build Date 26 Feb 2015; *Last Update 13 Apr
2015* 16:22.
So do you mean, the fix will be in the Next Build rather than Next Update?
Sorry if I appeared brusque, I am not impatient about this, to me, very
minor thing.
Full of admiration for all the work being done on Legacy 8.

There was a problem recently with exporting a Focus Group to gedcom (some
of the individuals were missing from the gedcom). I'm not aware this has
been fixed.
An alternative method, is to Tag everyon in the Focus Group, then export
the Tagged people to gedcom. Sorry I'm not at my main computer, so can't
access Legacy for details. Hopefully someone else can enlarge on this.

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy Website

2015-02-03 Thread Mary Young
Hi Barton
Thanks for your kind words about my site.
Re your question (NB there are no dumb questions!)
Each Family Tree created by Legacy (Legacy dubs "Web Pages") can be
uploaded as a stand-alone website, and some people do that - no coding
needed.
However, my personal website at http://cmy.iay.org.uk/, created and
maintained by MS FrontPage 2002, incorporates two Family Trees. When I
create a set of Legacy Web Pages, I save it into a folder on my computer,
where the rest of my site is stored. Creating a link from the Home Page to
the Legacy Pages is easy and only required the first time. After that, the
Legacy pages can be updated and republished anytime with no effort at all.
It's nice to learn some coding, but you can do without it.

Hi Rachel
I changed from Brother's Keeper many years ago! I've a family tree created
by Legacy at http://cmy.iay.org.uk/ped-lewis/default.htm
You may notice that Dennis shows Sources in a separate Bibliography with
hyperlinks, while I prefer footnotes on the Individual pages.
BTW I couldn't see your current website, It's blank apart from the header.

What a weird bug! Is there no way to Deselect the lines on the
Individual Report? I'd prefer to lose them on that Report also.

Re: [LegacyUG] Can someone please tell me how to include all spouses when creating a gedcom

2015-01-18 Thread Mary Young
Dear Brian
Thanks for the help on exporting My Focus Group to gedcom. It is not
focused on a single Ancestor and all descendants, it's a complicated group
with multiple heads. Maybe I misunderstood - but it seemed pointless to
return to the Focus Group window and "Remove Descendants". This seemed
much simpler
(1) Create the Search List for Everyone in the Focus Group (1019
individuals)
(2) Clear all Tag 3 (or whichever)
(3) Export All Tag 3 to a New Legacy File.
(4) Export the New Legacy File to gedcom (either include all Private and
Invisible People, or remember the final number will be reduced.
(5) To test, import the new gedcom into Legacy. Hurrah, I still have my
1019 individuals. As far as I can see, no-one is missing or disconnected.
In contrast, a direct File>Export to Gedcom of my Focus Group yields only
742 individuals, a loss of 25% This is a massive loss, I hope Export to
Gedcom is high on the Priority Fix List!

Thanks for all the help with creating a sorted list of relatives.
The Relationship Report is useful, but produced 9 pages of unsorted relatives!
So as Sherry advised, (use the Detailed Search tab for Individual >
Relationship > Related. Then in the Search List, click on Print,
include the fields you want
to have in the report, including Relationship and create the report in CSV. ).
The resulting CSV was imported to a new Google Sheets Spreadsheet, and
sorted on the Relationship Column - magic!! :-)

Re: [LegacyUG] Bing Maps and Event Addresses

I think it's a losing battle with Bing Maps!
Many times, I've been forced to use Google Earth to find a street
address (usually in Scotland) - put the lat+Long into Legacy - then
find the street is correctly named in Bing Maps.
Many Scottish rural llocations, named in Google Earth, are absent from
Bing maps. Sometimes I wonder if Bing (i.e. Microsoft) have
concentrated on USA?

[LegacyUG] Creating List of a Person's Relatives

2015-01-15 Thread Mary Young
After Setting Relationships for a starting person, is there an easy
way to get a list of their relatives? I can see them in the
Relationships column of the Index View, but the Grid cannot be sorted
on that column. Can Legacy create a clickable search list, or at least
a print to PDF of all relatives' names and RINs? If not, perhaps
someone can suggest a way to export the information and create such a
list. I would be grateful for any help.

Robert has given you good advice about finding the "good" version of your
file.
Please be reassured about images of certificates. they were never part of
your Legacy database and are still on your computer somewhere.
In any event, if you downloaded them from the scotlandspeople site, they
are yours once paid for, so you can download them again at no cost.

Re: [LegacyUG] Can someone please tell me how to include all spouses when creating a gedcom

2014-12-30 Thread Mary Young
Not realising there was a problem with exporting a Focus Group via
gedcom, I created one recently. It seemed OK because (unlike Pat and
Brian's experience) most of the Spouses are there. Looking again, the
gaps seem to be mainly (though not always) with multiple marriages,
e.g. my brothers and I have been transferred, but our mother (a 2nd
wife) has not.My great-aunt-by-marriage was married 3 times, all
husbands appear. Great-aunt's mother married twice - all her children
appear OK, but both husbands are missing.
A generation further back, a man who married 3 times - all his
children appear, but none of his wives; and "spouse" icon shows 2, I
assume because the third wife was childless.
In short, I can't make sense of what is happening.
The bottom line - I desperately need to send my updated file to a
cousin with Family Tree Maker - what can I do? Is there another
avenue?

Re: [LegacyUG] Question About Web Presence

2014-10-23 Thread Mary Young
There's a separate Yahoo Group devoted to using Legacy Family Tree to
create websites. https://uk.groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/WUL/info
The Group page has links to members' sites (though I notice some links no
longer work).
My own site is totally under my control at www.cmy.org.uk.
Personally I am old-fashioned and prefer to have software on my computer,
rather than dependent on the internet!
